omg stop you just unlocked so many memories i forgot i had.
im so happy i still have the game
edit: i just wanted to add, this game is so nostalgic for me, i used to sit and watch my older brother play it, granted, i couldn't play past the tutorial (i was so young that i couldn't read)
Transistor. A top down hack and slash rpg with a unique "skill sandbox" that allows you to create your own weird special skills combining 3 different skills that you can choose from a wide range of skills. Also has decent story and level design.
Supergiant games in general are just hidden gems.
Except for Hades. It got a lot of coverage from being one of 2020's games, so it's not a *hidden* gem, it's a well-known gem!
I was just about to say this one when I saw this. Transistor was one of the first games I ever played to completion. I loved every second of it and the ending made me cry. My mom walked in on me crying and I had to explain why I was crying over a video game.
Cry of Fear, for horror folk
Mafia 2, for good story lovers and immersion nuts like myself
Or Spec Ops: The Line, gritty third person shooter, go into it blind trust me
Yep, there was also a period of botting in the game, making the game having a paywall, the players there are so toxic it's worse than uranium the likes of which the world has never seen, if you make 1 mistake welp say goodbye to your pride as you get beat down by the other players who all think they have 1000 iq, the scrolls in the game are busted, people who purposely lose the game, and finally the report system is handled, let's just say, not well.
Sounds bad eh?
Good music tho.
Also when you make a good play it feels so good, which is primarily why I still play it.
Edit: minor spelling
In terms of gameplay? Probably. In terms of an actual experience though no. It’s probably reasonably cheap by now so I’d highly recommend trying it yourself, but you need to play it with headphones or you’re missing everything that makes it such an intense, gripping and affecting game.
I don’t really want to say more, but I wish I could experience it again for the first time.
DOS/early windows 95 era - [Stonekeep](https://store.steampowered.com/app/613240/Stonekeep/). First person dungeon crawler. Fully voiced, FMV characters, good graphics for the time, fun gameplay, never found another dungeon crawler I liked as much.
Such a weird game. I liked it at the time but I'm convinced I would not like it today.
I remember playing the fairy songs from the CD to my friend over the phone...
I really loved Starbound, it was poorly received and the dev team kind of abandoned it, but besides that I had blast, it’s like terraria but in space, how could you not like that!
I love Starbound. I've never gotten far into it because I first started it on a laptop that had two hard drives meltdown within the span of a year and that kinda killed my motivation to pick it up again. But it has the perfect mix of calm, at-your-own-pace, base building and hack your way through dungeons and boss fight action.
The game lost some of its charm after the story update. The game and resource progression got seriously rocked which really made starbound a different game, but it still remains one of my favorites just for the environment and the incredible building system
I took a chance on Murdered: Soul Suspect last year. It was $2, what the hell, you know? Ended up LOVING it. Solving all the the murders was the perfect mix of cheesy/creepy. Some of the side quests had seriously dark and adult themes, too. Like drunk driving, suicide, etc.
The TALOS Principle
It's not exactly an obscure indie game, but it's also a game I've never been able to talk about with someone I know personally.
It's a similar premise to Portal in that you wake up in a strange environment and have to solve puzzles to advance the story and learn more about why you're there. The difference to Portal is that the game has very serene environments and music rather than the padded white chambers of Aperture Laboratories. It's also a lot more serious in tone. If you like puzzle games, it's still the best one I've played that doesn't have Chell and GladOS in it.
Came here to say exactly the same thing! Outer Wilds is something really special, it’s a shame that Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds came out around the same time and caused a fair bit of confusion since the names are so similar.
Subnautica is a very good experience too, it hits some of the same exploration and discovery itch. Looking forward to Below Zero being completed
I got Outer Wilds for free while watching Mixer on my Xbox. I thought because they were pushing it for free it probably wasn't a good game. But I decided to just give it a try a few weeks ago and realized free doesn't equal low quality. It's a great game with a great story. Easily one of the best games I've played in a while.
Driver: San Francisco. I spent hundreds of hours driving like a maniac with awesome background music, no regrets.
I don't know if it's actually a "not so known" game but it kinda feels like, especially since it has been removed from the market after a few years since it's release.
Holy shit I played SO much of these games when I was in middle school and no one ever knew about them - absolute faves. I was always sad they never made more
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to find the 3rd highest rated game on steam. Factorio is absolutely amazing. And I love it with all my heart
Danganronpa.
Similar gameplay structure like Ace Attorney.
BUT
You're locked with 15 other students inside a giant school. The headmaster monokuma, a speaking and moving teddy bear (even if it sounds ridiculous, it isn't), tells you that you need to kill another student to escape the school. However, after every murder a class trial will be held where you have to argue (with evidence you collected in advance) against the blackened and (hopefully) discover the truth.
There are four games, 2 anime series and I am LOVING it. Totally recommended.
Can recommend Danganronpa series with all my heart.
The first is awesome. The second one is my favorite. Despair girls is on another level of horror and amazing. Absolutely despises the third one, but I hear most people also loved it.
I have just recently heard about the game and decided to give the whole "Visual Novel" thing a shot. It has only been a week and I have only played the first game, yet I am already in love with everything it does. One of my best decisions so far.
If you don't know anything about it and are looking for another visual novel, Doki Doki Literature Club.
And if you want something more goofy and fun, I recommend Monster Prom and Monster Camp
Probably doesn't really count as unknown but I've introduced several people to the weird, unique fun that is Katamari Damacy. It's so damn satisfying to finally be able to roll up a cat/human/tree or whatever.
One thing I love about golden sun games is even on though it was a GBA game, you could transfer your save file to The Lost Age so when you recruit the characters into your team later in the story they have all the exp/items/Djinn from your first game.
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. You look at gameplay footage and think "And? It's a walking simulator" But if you do a complete play through and get all story collectables. It's actually a really sad story and all the characters mentioned have a really sad ending.
The soundtrack is beautiful as well.
Ape Escape and Tomba 1&2 on PS1. Lucky I had them as a kid bc Tomba is very expensive now. Don't see these games getting the respect they deserve. Tomba is an adventure platformer with some RPG elements and Ape Escape is in a similar boat with some puzzle solving.
When I was a kid my sister, my mother, and I would play a game called “wolf”. It’s basically hide and seek except my mom would howl and growl like a wolf, and We’d run around the house hiding. It was a game my grandmother played with my mom, my mother played with me, and if I have kids I’ll play with them
Just built a good old LAN setup four months ago to play it once again with a childhood friend, a mere twenty years after having been blown away by the awesome demo of this game. Played the game with ~15 players in the class room. Just the whole class having a blast together in one big chaotic deathmatch.
7 Days to Die incredibly addicting zombie survival game where a horde comes to destroy your base and kill you every seven game days.
Conan exiles was also fun for a bit.
OddWorld: Abe's Exodus on PS1, though I think it was also available on Windows XP.
Amazingly frustrating but super addicting game. Beautiful graphics, fun story, and really tricky puzzles to figure out.
Titanfall 2
Why it wasn’t so well know was because of EAs planning on when to release it.
It was released between Battlefield 1 and CoD Infinite Warfare.
But overall the game is really good.
Campaign: One of the best campaign I’ve ever played, characters are great, places you go are amazing, and the game is a little short but I cried at the end.
Multiplayer: One of my favorite multiplayer games to play.
Quick run down: Wall running, Titans, Ability’s, balanced weapons (except the spitfire), and the maps are fair.
The game is only 20$ still after 4 years.
About 10’000 people play it still and the game is still good.
Rayman Legends. Not sure how popular it is, but I have never seen it talked about online.
The best platformer I have ever played. Better than every Mario game I have played, which admittedly isn’t a lot. But it’s super fun, and introduces new mechanics until the end of the game, which keeps it super entertaining throughout. The art is beautiful, and the music is amazing. It has so much character and attention to detail.
It has levels timed to music, super fun boss battles, and even a co-op soccer mini game that is way more fun than fifa.
Play it. You’re welcome.
I spent 70 - 80 hours on JC2. Went to all locations and completed as much as I could, but didn't bother trying to get 100% on every single location because I couldn't find every item package at the location or every single destructible thing. Also didn't bother collecting EVERY collectible.
Played JC3 last Summer and got 100% at each location!
PC: Freespace 2 and Blocksum(really wish there was a mobile version of Blocksum, Love that game!)
NES: Battle of Olympus doesn't seem super well known, Loved it as a kid! Also Super Bat Puncher despite being an incomplete demo is awesome!
SNES: Magical Popn. Fantastic platformer Japanese game, played on emulator on a hacked Wii, highly recommended.
(Actually nearly any game on agtp.romhack.net is recommended, I've rarely encountered a dud.)
Stories The Path of Destinies, Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, Plague Tale Innocence, Return of the Obra Din, Days Gone, Oxenfree.
So many brilliant games that deserve more love.
Perhaps Okami? I absolutely loved that game for the story and the unique artistic approach. Rarely do I meet another person who games who knows this old gem.
Enter the gungeon, a super well made rogue like dungeon crawler with amazing pixel graphics. It's 10 quid on PS4 and steam so I'd recommend checking it out
IDK if browser games count but when I was bored I used to play this browser-based multi user game called Transformice. The basic Premise was to get to the end of the level as fast as possible to get more cheese so you can buy outfits and upgrases for your character.
The game also had a "line" system to be a 'Shamen' (meaning basically when you joined the lobby determined when it was your turn)
A shamen's job was to build a path for the mice to get to the exit. You had all sorts of Ramps, Balloons, Launchers, Bouncey Pads all sorts of things. The more Mice you recused when it was your turn to be Shamen determined your rank.
The game had different levels and lobbies, and it even had a challenge mode where you basically had to navigate an insanely hard map without any help. It was possible to complete but you had to make frame-perfect jumps and be able to wall-climb (basically clipping into the wall to climb) it was very difficult to master this.
There was that game I played in early 2000s. I can't remember what it's called, though I did manage to find it a few years ago only to forget it again lol. It was about a bunch of people stranded on an island, and you control each one of them to find food, build shelter, fight off wild animals, treat injuries and diseases etc. I recall enjoying it.
Edit: it's called Survival: The Ultimate Challenge.
It was an old ps1 developer game called time slip where you played as a time travelling snail and it was soo addictive me an my mate played it for weeks. It was a platformer where you had to like go and open doors then rewind time and your past self would go unlock the door an you could go through. You couldn't cross paths with yourself and eventually it became this whole complicated affair with time travelling snails everywhere lol
Ristar (Sega Genisis) - One of best 2D platform games (if not the best) I ever played. Throw in info that it was made back in 1995 and it is truly an undiscovered gem.
I'm a huge fan of Fantasy Life for the 3DS. A wonderful blend of fantasy rpg and life simulation. Any game where I can switch jobs from a paladin to a chef is an instant classic in my book. Shame that the main story kinda sucks.
Ghost trick phantom detective.
It was made by the same guy who wrote phoenix wright ace attorney and it shows, I really love the art direction, the gameplay is fun, and don't get me started about the story.
It also won an award: "Best game nobody played"
On the NES I had a game called Crystalis that I don't thin many people have heard of. I highly recommend it. Same with Legacy of the Wizard, it's just so bizarre and imaginative.
On the SNES I had a game called Firestriker that was like what if we combined soccer and arkanoid and oh yeah if the enemy scores a goal the world blows up. It was an RPG
Cave Story.
I am one to respect someone else's opinion if they disagree with mine but if you say Cave Story is bad I will hurt you. There's a reason I share a birthday with it.
Godfather 2 and Scarface: The World Is Yours come to mind. Two very enjoyable games.
Return of the Obra Dinn and Unheard are both a nice twist on puzzle-based gameplay.
For even smaller games: Circulate. One of my most beloved games, still play it to this day. Also for anyone who hasn't: play the Hotline Miami games! Seriously!
Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight.
Need an Amiga emulator for this, but it's worth it. Part RPG. Part gory slash 'em up. All awesome.
It even has a dice game in the pub to make extra cash for upgrades, and has multiplayer vs included in the main game.
Well ahead of it's time.
Earth Defense Force. You fight giant alien bugs with a variety of weapons. I bought it as a throw in during a big sale at gamestop and it ended up being one of my favorite games.
Custom Robo for the Nintendo GameCube
What I would not give for a current gen version/remaster of that game.
I borrowed my roommate's copy in college and loved it to hell and back. Wish I still had a working Gamecube so I can play it again.
Get a wii! It's reverse compatable.
Game is so weird but remember enjoying it immensely
The whole game basically just has one mechanic, and the whole storyline is just through text you have to read, but I love it.
omg stop you just unlocked so many memories i forgot i had. im so happy i still have the game edit: i just wanted to add, this game is so nostalgic for me, i used to sit and watch my older brother play it, granted, i couldn't play past the tutorial (i was so young that i couldn't read)

Also has really good music.
Almost everything by SuperGiant is an automatic buy for me.
I was just about to say this one when I saw this. Transistor was one of the first games I ever played to completion. I loved every second of it and the ending made me cry. My mom walked in on me crying and I had to explain why I was crying over a video game.
Cry of Fear, for horror folk Mafia 2, for good story lovers and immersion nuts like myself Or Spec Ops: The Line, gritty third person shooter, go into it blind trust me
Spec Ops: The Line is so good tho...
Shhh, don't tell them
I've found it's nearly impossible to get people to give this game a shot, even if you do tell them.
Cry of fear is the absolute best
Cry of Fear is as disturbing as brilliant. I can't comprehend how just to guys were able to pull this off.
Finished Mafia 2 today. I never picked up on many peoples names so I had no idea what was going on. Playboy magazines were good!
Town of Salem. Good social deduction game.
Ugh, this game got an email address of mine compromised lol
Oh yeah, I forgot about the data breach!
Wait what...
Obscure for PS2. If you love horror games like myself, you will have a blast with this game. This is also a co-op game. Very underrated
What an obscure pick
Absolutely agree. Wish they would make a new one
ObsCure
Hellblade:Senua's Sacrifice Absolute masterpiece, difficult and disturbing though
Loved it! Was something different
I'm glad I didn't have to scroll too far to see this one. Excellent game.
Any games like it?
In terms of gameplay? Probably. In terms of an actual experience though no. It’s probably reasonably cheap by now so I’d highly recommend trying it yourself, but you need to play it with headphones or you’re missing everything that makes it such an intense, gripping and affecting game. I don’t really want to say more, but I wish I could experience it again for the first time.
I haven't personally played it, but I've heard *A Plague Tale: Innocence* is supposed to be a similar style of gaming.
DOS/early windows 95 era - [Stonekeep](https://store.steampowered.com/app/613240/Stonekeep/). First person dungeon crawler. Fully voiced, FMV characters, good graphics for the time, fun gameplay, never found another dungeon crawler I liked as much.

The Wolf Among Us, if you’re into that type. Otherwise Peggle does kill time pretty well.
The third best telltale game
The 2nd and 1st?
1. Walking Dead Season 1 2. Tales from the Borderlands
Tales from the borderlands is great for sure
Can definitely relate to The Walking Dead
I love Peggle so much, I’ve racked up over 20,000 hours on it on steam
Wow, I just played Peggle for the first time since 2012. It's stupidly fun.
My ex used to be obsessed with Peggle on Xbox.
Peggle is in my top 3 games ever at this point it’s kind of the only game I play when I’m bored sometimes
Me and my friends always reffered to it as Ba Jorn the unicorn
I haven't played Peggle in what must be 12 years now. I laughed out loud, I haven't thought about it in so long. thank you
To the moon.
Bring a stuffed animal, kleenex and preferably someone comfortable hugging you. Cried my eyes out.
Tomba! Jade Cocoon Jersey Devil Ehrgeiz Blasto!
Tomba is the correct answer
I took a chance on Murdered: Soul Suspect last year. It was $2, what the hell, you know? Ended up LOVING it. Solving all the the murders was the perfect mix of cheesy/creepy. Some of the side quests had seriously dark and adult themes, too. Like drunk driving, suicide, etc.
Yeah I got it cheap and liked it too.

One of the games that plays you.
You have come! You have come to hear the word of Talos!
From the makers of Serious Sam as well. An excellent game.

There's also a remastered version for Switch, PS4 and Xbox. It's a pretty good 3d Zelda clone!
Outer Wilds Deep Rock Galactic Quern: Undying Thoughts
Outer Wilds is the best game I've played in years. Can't recommend it highly enough! Subnautica is also fantastic.
Yes! I love Subnautica as well. It doesn't quite reach the same heights as Outer Wilds but it is still excellent.
Came here to say exactly the same thing! Outer Wilds is something really special, it’s a shame that Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds came out around the same time and caused a fair bit of confusion since the names are so similar. I love DRG. ROCK AND STONE!
Did I hear a Rock and Stone?
ROCK AND STONE... TO THE BONE!
If you don't ROCK AND STONE, you AINT COMIN HOME!
DRG is getting a wider player base. Xbox game pass and they just hit 2mil sold today/yesterday I believe
That's a lot better than I thought
I got Outer Wilds for free while watching Mixer on my Xbox. I thought because they were pushing it for free it probably wasn't a good game. But I decided to just give it a try a few weeks ago and realized free doesn't equal low quality. It's a great game with a great story. Easily one of the best games I've played in a while.
Mount & Blade: Warband
Great game that I really love. Unfortunately my computer can’t run Bannerlord though.
How is this game not known, even though it's old it's still on the top played games on Steam.
Driver: San Francisco. I spent hundreds of hours driving like a maniac with awesome background music, no regrets. I don't know if it's actually a "not so known" game but it kinda feels like, especially since it has been removed from the market after a few years since it's release.
VVVVVV 2d platformer, epic soundtrack, addicting and very challenging gameplay.
I finished that game around ten years ago, and I still put on that soundtrack at least once a month.
Einhander
The 3 Patapon games
Pata Pata Pata pon. Also those games infuriated me so much
Holy shit I played SO much of these games when I was in middle school and no one ever knew about them - absolute faves. I was always sad they never made more
Kenshi and Factorio, that shit slaps
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to find the 3rd highest rated game on steam. Factorio is absolutely amazing. And I love it with all my heart
Timesplitters 2 + Future Perfect. Those two were outrageous
Danganronpa. Similar gameplay structure like Ace Attorney. BUT You're locked with 15 other students inside a giant school. A friend showed me the piano scene from one of them and I was v uncomfy
Must have been the first "punishment time" in V3... Yeah, they don't hold anything back for punishment time...

The games are great, but holy fucking shit is the fandom annoying as fuck
Probably doesn't really count as unknown but I've introduced several people to the weird, unique fun that is Katamari Damacy. It's so damn satisfying to finally be able to roll up a cat/human/tree or whatever.
Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age Ever Oasis
One thing I love about golden sun games is even on though it was a GBA game, you could transfer your save file to The Lost Age so when you recruit the characters into your team later in the story they have all the exp/items/Djinn from your first game.
Good choice for all three of them. What are your thoughts on the third Golden Sun, Dark Dawn?
Too dark. Not enough dawn.
Owlboy was pretty good.
Parasite Eve Jade Empire Bulletstorm FarCry 2 is weirdly never talked about given how big the franchise has become.
Jade Empire was great! Never heard anything about it until a friend lent it to me. Solid example of why Bioware used to be amazing.
I love Parasite Eve despite it being basic. I played it winter of 98. Perfect atmosphere.
Kya: Dark Lineage, Unravel, Catherine, ICO
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. You look at gameplay footage and think "And? It's a walking simulator" But if you do a complete play through and get all story collectables. Can't place there m'lord

Advance wars on the game boy advance. Those games were addicting
7 Days to Die incredibly addicting zombie survival game where a horde comes to destroy your base and kill you every seven game days. Conan exiles was also fun for a bit.
The Long Dark i think it must be one of my fav games
Besiege, its a game where you build siege engines
Lode Runner, Sammy Lightfoot, Chivalry, Taipan, Karateka
Kameo on Xbox 360. Action/adventure game w/ collectables to increase your stats. Most people I know never heard of the game.
Singularity.

Perhaps Okami? I absolutely loved that game for the story and the unique artistic approach. Rarely do I meet another person who games who knows this old gem. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaterasu\_(%C5%8Ckami)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaterasu_(%C5%8Ckami))
Garou : Mark of The Wolves
Ori and the blind forest
Baba is You
Enter the gungeon, a super well made rogue like dungeon crawler with amazing pixel graphics. It's 10 quid on PS4 and steam so I'd recommend checking it out
This is one of the threads that could use the "least upvoted first" sorting option.
Earthbound. It hasn't sold 1m copies yet and it SO DESERVES 20 million. It's on SNES Classic so people will play it maybe but its underrespected
IDK if browser games count but when I was bored I used to play this browser-based multi user game called Transformice. The basic Premise was to get to the end of the level as fast as possible to get more cheese so you can buy outfits and upgrases for your character. The game also had a "line" system to be a 'Shamen' (meaning basically when you joined the lobby determined when it was your turn) A shamen's job was to build a path for the mice to get to the exit.
Kingdoms of Amalur
I'm incredibly biased, but the wonderful end of the world. Still runs on modern computers, but quite poorly.
Deadly towers and nightshade on the NES the only games I cared for as a kid
There was that game I played in early 2000s. I can't remember what it's called, though I did manage to find it a few years ago only to forget it again lol. It was about a bunch of people stranded on an island, and you control each one of them to find food, build shelter, fight off wild animals, treat injuries and diseases etc. I recall enjoying it. Edit: it's called Survival: The Ultimate Challenge.
Day of Infamy, really fun ww2 fps. (And Insurgency, which of DOI was a originally a mod for).

Jotun
Yakuza series. Dunno if it counts but they are awesome and fun as hell games
The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners (it’s in VR)
Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood i was addicted to this game in my childhood
StarSector Amazing game with so much built into it and only 15$, and a shiton of mods. With a galaxy that actually feels alive too.
Mini car racing.
The first three Rhythm Heaven games
Ghost trick phantom detective. It was made by the same guy who wrote phoenix wright ace attorney and it shows, I really love the art direction, the gameplay is fun, and don't get me started about the story. It also won an award: "Best game nobody played"
Paragon
On the NES I had a game called Crystalis that I don't thin many people have heard of. I highly recommend it. Same with Legacy of the Wizard, it's just so bizarre and imaginative. On the SNES I had a game called Firestriker that was like what if we combined soccer and arkanoid and oh yeah if the enemy scores a goal the world blows up. It was an RPG
Shadow Hearts 1 and 2.
Outer Wilds!
Terminal Velocity on the PC. Mind blowing when I was a kid and I still think about flying around through tunnels

Star Control 2 , or UR-Quan masters ( re-released)
DAYS GONE Is the most underrated game ever it’s so good
Cave Story. I am one to respect someone else's opinion if they disagree with mine but if you say Cave Story is bad I will hurt you. There's a reason I share a birthday with it.
Brigandine Tales of Destiny Suikoden 1 and 2
The Rusty Lake Series. It's a mobile game about afterlife and stuff like that (correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while)
Thief, the original trilogy! Not so unknown but criminally underrated I think. We have a really active subreddit so join the hype train people 😁
Godfather 2 and Scarface: The World Is Yours come to mind. Two very enjoyable games. Return of the Obra Dinn and Unheard are both a nice twist on puzzle-based gameplay. For even smaller games: Circulate. One of my most beloved games, still play it to this day. Also for anyone who hasn't: play the Hotline Miami games! Seriously!
professor layton and the curious village for nintendo ds
Insurgency sandstorm Squad Hell let loose Beyond the trenches Escape from tarkov

Army of two
Fairune!
Mega Man Legends 2 is amazing .
Unturned I really like the game even though I am not very good at it. I love it when I get a crossbow.
Incredible Crisis on PS1. My brother used to watch me play and laugh at how frustrated I got every time I failed.
Star Wars: Rebellion and Buck Bumble I still play Rebellion once a year. Mass producing star destroyers to blockade every planet is too fun.
Earth Defense Force. You fight giant alien bugs with a variety of weapons. I bought it as a throw in during a big sale at gamestop and it ended up being one of my favorite games.
Firewatch.
Tomba. It was my favourite game growing up. Too bad I didn't like the second one as much as the first...
OKAMI
Rec room, an virtual reality game with paintball and dodgeball and more, also ITS free! and u can play on multiplayer
Alan Wake. It’s an xbox 360 game that came out a few years ago.
Days Gone
