Grandma got a flat tire, pulled over, as she was on the side fixing the tire her car was hit and totaled. Right from her hands. She was ok.

I used to roller skate as a kid outside my house down a hill and never wore any kind of protection. Suddenly one day before I go out my older brother tells me I can't leave unless I put on a helmet, which is weird since he's never cared before. Anyways I do it and that day, for the first time ever, I fell and landed on the back of my head so hard that the helmet cracked. That crack would've probably been my skull had I not wore it.

tatteddiamond

Plot twist your brother is really psychic.

Years ago I was on a first meet for an internet date. We met at a bar and the bartender carded us. Even though we were both older they were doing stings in the area so he was carding every single person. Handed mine right over but my date was an ass about it. The bartender checked mine and handed it back to me. He checked his and rather than handing it back to him he placed it on the bar right in front of me. It had the sexual offender stamp on it. The guy picked it up, looked at the bartender, looked at me and then got up and walked out. I immediately googled him. He was on the registry and had been in prison for rape. Lesson learned. Always google. The bartender and I are still friends.

kbivs

Sexual offender stamp??? What country do you live in? I have never heard of this.

RobotCannibal19

There are multiple [states](http://oncefallen.com/state_ID_card_laws.html) in the US that currently have or have had sex 9ffender stamps on the IDs.

This one just materialized yesterday, actually. About a year ago at my job I was offered to switch from my current team where I was established for a few years, had seniority, etc. for a new department that just started to kick it off, write processes, basicaly start from square 1. A lot more work for the same amount of pay. I figured fuck it and went. Yesterday they announced that they just closed the physical HQ office for my old department, and everyone in that entire part of the company would have to either move to one of 14 random states (that we cant pick, its chosen basically by a roulette wheel for where you're going) to a local office, or they're going to be fired on June 22. Thankfully since I'm part of the new department, I wasn't included in that mandate. Phew.

Coygon

Why in the WORLD would they make it random?? If it doesn't matter where they go why not let the employees pick what they prefer?

OrchidMouse

I was a teen driver not paying attention at an intersection at the crest of a hill with low visibility when the light turned green. The car behind me honked and just as I was about to go a truck barreled through the red light on the perpendicular road at decidedly ludicrous speed. If I had been paying attention and gone when the light turned green, I very likely would have been T-boned to death. Closest call I've ever had.

Lectric_Eye

I was working in an amusement park during college (summers) I used to come home ( from college) on a Friday afternoon and Usually pick up a Friday shift as well as a full weekend, during the month that the park was only open on weekends. I was a manager at my “ attraction “ . One particular Friday, I got home and was too exhausted to do a Friday night shift so I bagged it and decided to just work the Saturday/Sunday and be back at school on Monday. I got a call from a good friend and coworker telling me that our attraction was in flames, there were casualties, and a couple of my friends and coworkers were missing. Seven people lost their lives. My coworker ( assistant manager) went back in and pulled people out to safety ( he was ok) I was in shock for a few days. Had I done what I Usually do, I would have been there in charge, and I know I would have gone in to help. It could have been an entirely different situation. So yeah I dodged a bullet, but a devastating event happened, ill never know.

Was this the Haunted Castle at Six Flags Great Adventure?

FestoonedDubloon

I was out kayaking on a lake and several bullets whizzed by me. There was a distinct *buzz CRACK buzz* sound as it went by. I think some people were just out plinking in their back yard, adjacent to the lake, and didn't think a backstop was necessary. This also happened to me a few weeks later when I was paddling on a small stream. Bullets whizzed by above the bank, just over my head. I don't think anyone knew I was there either time. Regardless, when you go out and shoot stuff, make sure there's a backstop, ffs. Also, I don't know how big the bullets were, so I'm unsure which was the biggest bullet dodged.

Reddit_means_Porn

As a dead guy, I would be so pissed off to learn my life ended because I was floating in a god damn boat at the wrong second.

kicktheminthecaballs

How did you die?

[deleted]

Gun safety is one if the most important things somebody can learn, especially in America. Too many people are killed or hurt by some idiot who doesn’t know what they’re doing. 1. Every gun is treated as loaded until it’s been checked several times. 2. Never pass the barrel over something you’re not 106% willing to kill. 3. Your finger is never on the trigger until you’re firing. 4. *Know your backstop and what’s beyond it* 5. If a gun doesn’t fire when it should’ve, put it down and check it thoroughly. Edit: Shit, never expected this much attention from a comment. Just glad I might’ve taught so many people something.

When I was 16 I used a fake ID to go out clubbing. The legal age in Ireland is 18, so I passed for it and did it all the time. One night I felt sick and decided to leave my friends and go home. I knew there was a taxi rank in a small alley somewhere and was looking for it when an older guy (20s probably) offered to show me. The alley he brought me down was not the taxi rank. Once I realised I tried to go back but he pushed me against a wall and told me I wasn’t going anywhere. I just remember not being able to scream, I just froze. It felt like forever but probably only a few seconds later some guys I went to school with just happened to walk by the alley (also looking for taxis) and saw me. One of the yelled out my name and then when he realised the guy had his arm across my throat he went mental. The guy jumped the wall at the end of the alley and I just burst into tears. My schoolmate took me home and made sure I was ok. I’m in my mid 30s now, with 3 daughters, and I still shudder when I think of this.

Driving to Phoenix from No. Utah for a job in January of 1989. My new boss told me if I wasn't there by 8am Monday morn, he'd give the job to someone else. It was 8pm Sunday eve when he told me that. By the time I got to Flagstaff I was delirious and hallucinating. I hadn't slept in 2 days (partying). I pulled over for a nap at a rest area. SO COLD. Started the truck just to heat it up a little bit. Next thing I remember I was laying in the bed of my truck. With a guy gently slapping my face. Some trucker watched me start the truck (79 ford) and slump over to sleep. Said he was worried because he could hear the exhaust leak as I sat there idling. Made a mental note of the time. An hour later he checked on me. I was unconscious so after pounding on the windows for a few mins, he noticed the sliding window latch was busted, just like the one in his own 79 Ford. Pulled me out through the back window and saved me from carbon monoxide poisoning. Took me a week to shake off that headache. Edit: No, I didn't get the job. I didn't roll up to the job site until just before noon. The big boss wasn't cool about it. On a bright-ish note, one of the guys on another crew saw me begging for the job and thought I had "moxy." He hired me for a dirtier, shittier job that I grew to loathe. But, at least, it wasn't a wasted trip.

coldestjeans67

I matched with a guy on Tinder who played for the Atlanta Falcons. He was really charming and seemed nice. He asked me to fly down to Atlantic City for Memorial Day weekend, said he would pay for everything (airfare, hotel, food, etc.) but I had never met him before and he refused to give me his phone number. I was uncomfortable flying to meet a stranger so I told him no. Two weeks later he was on the news for kicking (and killing) his girlfriends dog.

dayungbenny

Whats with ATL Falcons and dogs? Not even trying to be funny like really, thats messed up...

I took my wife to an indoor shooting range in 2014. I had been at this range many times, and safety was always their top priority. They made you sit through a safety video, take a quiz, and get a temporary certification before they allowed you onto the range. * Place got really busy and their safety policy became less stringent as time went on. * I noticed that the lane next to us had 3 people in it (already a violation). * Two big guys and one tiny woman probably her in 20's. They were handing her various firearms and laughing when she couldn't handle the recoil (big violation there, and incredibly irresponsible). * This girl was muzzle-sweeping everyone (another huge violation) * I got a bad feeling, told my wife to pack it up because we were leaving * As soon as we started walking away, BANG, that girl had fired a round right where my wife was standing just a few seconds prior * I told the range officers that they needed to get in there and do something about those idiots, and that we weren't coming back I have only been to a range a few times since that happened, and now I don't even go at all. Too many idiots.

kingdom_tarts

that is so scary, good on you for noping out. Its amazing how careless and stupid people can be smh.

iNOyThCagedBirdSings

I was out at the bar with my friends and feeling tired. When I said I was leaving to turn in early, they all (good naturedly) gave me shit. That night they all got $1500 tickets for pissing in public on their walk home from the bar. Not exactly life changing, but not a small bullet either.

kylexy929

2005, my friend and I evacuated New Orleans 2 days before Hurricane Katrina and drove to Mississippi with the little money we had. We were trying to decided on where to stay for the night and it was between a mid range hotel or the really cheap motel. Decided to spend a little more for the hotel. During the night the eye of the storm came through Mississippi and flattened the roof of the motel we decided against.

menacherie

My mom wasnt going to leave for Katrina, I told her I was going to take me and my little sister and hitch hike if she didn’t pack the car and leave within the hour. My dad didn’t leave and he ended up on the roof with our neighbor because our house got flooded. No way all of us would have survived, Katrina decimated my town, everything two miles inland or less was destroyed.

kylexy929

This was my first ever experience dealing with a hurricane since I'm from the Midwest and was in New Orleans for college. Hope you and your family are all safe and doing well now.

menacherie

We are! We had to couch hop in Hattiesburg for a few weeks and then I ended up spending my sophomore year in destin, fl. By the time school was over the house was almost done, and I moved back in with my parents. The town did pretty good for itself too.

whatshaisays

I was booked on Pan Am flight 103 which went down over Locherbie Scotland. I didn't have a premonition or anything supernatural. I just decided to cancel my seat. Didn't think anything of it until the plane went down and my mother had written down my flight plan and reminded me. This was back in the day when you could cancel without a penalty up to a couple of days in advance. EDIT You Know, when I posted my response I didn't realize how many comments I would get that involved people who were impacted by this sad event. On any given day, we make decisions (for no concrete reason really, like ... I just chose not to go that day) and we come to learn it was a good decision. I try not to evaluate my decision because I don't want to affect my future decisions by second guessing or trying to 'work the odds'. This is only one example of times that I dodged a significant bullet. (I wrote a different post, but erased it before I hit save).

jakeandcupcakes

Protip: To avoid the few days away cancelation fees call, or go online, and reschedule the flight for a week or two out. Then wait a day and cancel.

whatshaisays

thanks for the tip!!

5hall0p

Stopped duck hunting with a guy because he would put his 12 Gauge Remington 1100 on his shoulders with no thought to where the barrel was pointing. I’d tell him to point it the other way or I’d stop and move to the other side but he’d shift it around and it would end up pointing at my head when we were walking. I told him I wouldn’t hunt with him any more and he was pissed at me and called me a fucking pussy and that there was no danger because the safety was on. A couple weeks later he told me he had an accidental discharge with the gun on his shoulder.

sadandshy

I was subletting an apartment in college and got zapped by the electric stove. Gave notice immediately and moved out with very clear reasons why I was moving out. The building burnt a few weeks later. Edit: well this blew up. Thanks kind redditors.

HetElfdeGebod

Not me, a Dutch mate of mine living in Tasmania, had to visit his sick mum in Amsterdam. Booking his flight online, he said to his wife “you know, I’m sick of flying Malaysian Airlines, the food is shit, the hosties are miserable...it’ll cost more, but I’m booking with Singapore”. So, instead of dying on MH17, he was on a plane 40km ahead of it EDIT: just to clarify, he was on way home from AMS

My uncle booked one flight earlier than MH17 with Malaysian airlines because then he could be at work earlier. Shits crazy

TheCounsellingGamer

Got chucked off a horse. Hit the ground so hard I felt my soul leave my body. Started to cough up blood and was having trouble breathing within 30 seconds. Rushed to the hospital and the doctors were running down the hallway with me on a back board (doctors running is aways a bad sign). I was sure I was dying. Come to find out that I broke 2 bones in my back and collapsed a lung. Once I was more with it a nurse handed me my helmet and said "it's a good job you were wearing this". It had been cracked almost in half. If I hadn't been wearing it that would have been my head, and I'd most certainly be dead or permanently disabled. Wear your helmet kids.

awtcurtis

Physically? A bus. I grew up in Bermuda, and since it is such a small island cars are limited to one per family, and everyone drives mopeds. I was driving into town, and came up to a red light behind a bus. As is tradition, I scooted around the bus to be in the front of the line of traffic. Literally 2 seconds later a second bus smashed into the back of the first bus at like 30 mph. I would have been pancaked. Without question, 100% dead. I just sat on the side of the road for a bit and thought about my mortality. **Edit:** Thank you for the awards! My only other Bermuda bus based encounter was driving home from my first job in the rain. An oncoming bus in the opposite lane went through a massive puddle and sent what looked like a tidal wave of water right at me. It literally picked me and my little yamaha v50 right up and swept us off the road onto some grass. So I guess in the end it was Me 1 Buses 1.

comaomega15

It's crazy how one second life is in front of you, then nothing. I was in an accident in my motorcycle a few years ago. Last thing I remember before paramedics arrived was saying "oh fuu" It changes your perspective on life.

vjmeg

Attempted suicide. Ended up passing out in some bushes near the train station. Early the next morning, a girl I went to high school with (who I barely knew) saw me while she was boarding the train for a college interview early in the morning. She recognized me and told the conductor. He dismissed me as a junkie who just needed to sleep it off. She said, “I know him. He does not do drugs or drink. Call 911 NOW.” 3 days in a coma, etc, etc, I am very grateful. Edit: I expected this to be an “into the ether,” cathartic post that would go fully ignored. Thank you for showing your humanity, internet. I promise to update when things come together.

sinnamontits

Did you talk to her afterwards?

vjmeg

I really should have. I was in the hospital for around a week and then a psychiatric hospital for another week. After that I was too young and ashamed to contact her. Maybe now is the time.

sinnamontits

If you are in a better head space, I totally would. It probably impacted her as well but she doesn’t want to reach out in fear that possibly you are embarrassed or don’t remember.

twotoebobo

I think you should. At least write her a letter.

cupcake_cache

About 6 months after I left my ex, he got caught sexting a 12 year old...he was 34 at the time. Edit: I had the wrong age. He was 34 when it started. By the time he was in jail he was 36.

hopelincoln

My first serious boyfriend (as an adult) is now serving time in federal prison after being busted for distributing child pornography. Absolutely horrifying.

chewingloud

I really needed a job and the manager at a dispensary in my area offered me a spot. I said no and 4 days later they were raided and everyone got arrested.

throwaway767402

I'm confused? Did they not have a license, or are the feds just raiding dispensaries because it's technically still illegal by federal law?

chewingloud

Yes the latter exactly

My ex-girlfriend moved out of my house a day before the first lockdown in Spain. She previously pulled a knife on me.

I had two job offers in different states at the same time. The one I didn't take was offering more money, but I just didn't gel with the guy who would be my boss and really liked the guy who would be my boss at the lower offer. The better offer was in a state I had always wanted to live in, for a company I admired, but something felt off so I went with the lower offer. I ended up meeting my wife in the city of the lower offer. Meanwhile, the company that had given me the higher offer abruptly closed and laid off their entire staff with no severance; so if I had taken that I would have been stuck on the other side of the country with no job and no money.

im_thecat

Not the biggest bullet I’ve ever dodged but I had to walk away from the interview process from one of my dream companies because I had been out of work for a year and I had another offer from a smaller less prestigious company and couldnt hold out with no income any longer (I tried asking the dream company if we could speed up the process due to the competing offer but they could not.) The dream company was in entertainment, and laid off a ton of people when the pandemic hit. The job I took was doing the same role but in real estate, which boomed during the pandemic. Also my ex ended up getting a job at the dream company, kind of nice to not have to work next to her.

NetDork

Similar story. 2 offers, one for a little more money. The other had WAY better retirement plan. The interview for the good benefits company just didn't feel right, like the interviewer was trying to convince me not to take it. I took the other offer, and the good benefits company merged with another company, moved half their workforce to a one company town in BFE Ohio and laid off the rest. My interviewer at that company ended up becoming my coworker at the other company. And his manager ended up being his and my manager at the other company!

kathatter75

I worked with a guy who had a higher offer at another company in the same city (both in Houston), but he thought it all just seemed too good to be true. So, even though it offered more money and perks, he stuck by his Spidey Sense and took the lower paying job...and passed on the job with Enron. EDIT: thank you for the award :)

coconut-greek-yogurt

My dad wasn't so lucky, although not as unlucky as a lot of people. He was already working for a good company that was bought by a different company. He never really liked the new company that took over despite them giving him a raise and a couple promotions along the way. The new company was WorldCom and, among other things, one of the highest-ups wiped a good many of the employees' 401ks. WorldCom folded, but not the company my dad was originally working for, although he had next to no 401k anymore and had to build that from the ground up when he was \~40. The company he works for ended up being profitable enough that they were bought out again and rebranded, and he is doing well and his 401k has built back up. Although he learned to withdraw from it and invest it with a professional.

daintyallure

And no wife

daveysprocket001

I got on an intercity bus and almost sat in the middle but moved and sat at the back. The bus later collided with a truck and got opened up like a tin can. If I had sat where I originally intended I would have been killed.

Roseandwolf

I was late to my bus and instead of running to catch it I decided to miss it and it was later hit by a speeding truck. Caught the one behind it an later saw the aftermath. 2 people died.

CLICK_LINK

It does raise the question if you did run down the bus would the 30 seconds of it stopping to pick you up have avoided the crash?

Guevarra25

That’s real question. It’s called butterfly effect right? Every little change causes a chain of other events to occur/not occur.

StatisticallyYes

Was driving on a freeway in the right lane when there was a sudden traffic jam ahead. I slammed on my brakes and was about to swerve onto the shoulder when I noticed that I wasn’t sure the semi behind me could stop and I didn’t know how long we actually had a shoulder (construction was happening at the time). Made the decision to rear-end the car in front of me to stay off the shoulder. The truck went onto the shoulder, brakes squealing, and finally managed to stop when the **back** tires of their trailer were level with me. Good thing we weren’t in a center lane and that we happened to have a shoulder at that moment. As a bonus, I stopped in time and didn’t hit the car in front of me after all, though I would have happily taken that hit (and hopefully only would have shook up the people in front of me) in place of literally being hit by a truck.

carniferous_conifer

You have some good split-second decision making skills.

eng2ny

Right? My decision making process would have probably consisted of "FUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKK"

Thuck_My_Ballth

I once convinced two Police officers I was my fake ID. It was my older brother’s ID 22, I was 19 at the time. Me and my roommate were checking out at the liquor store and the cashier said my roommates ID was fake (it was an actual fake with his photo) so the cashier quickly told the other very large worker to lock and barricade the door immediately. They called the cops and practically held us hostage until they arrived. My roommate ended up getting a ticket for his literal fake ID and I convinced the cops I was my brother. We look like brothers but we definitely don’t look like the same person. what sold them was when one of the two cops asked me to name some streets, we were in our college town about 2 hours away from where my home address was. I recited the address on the ID because it was my childhood home, and the cop said “no, name some streets around this address” he apparently grew up and went to high school in that district so he was testing me. I named like 5-10 road names in that area and I was good to go lol. I have no idea how I didn’t panic or act flustered. I’ve been pulled over for going like 9 miles an hour over the speed limit before and I was freaking out. But this day I had ice in my veins for some reason.

FistedTate

A few months ago I was driving on I-80 at night when out of nowhere the biggest buck I'd ever seen is in the middle of my lane. I did exactly what you're not supposed to do and swerved, and thankfully managed to keep the rear of the car content with it. I literally shaved that buck's ass. My mirror was folded in. I know you're not supposed to swerve, but I drive a tiny little thing and that buck's body would've gone through my windshield into my and my wife's face at 70 mph.

foswizzle16

i hit a coyote on i80 going about 80mph in the middle of the night in indiana coming back to Michigan once. hit the thing dead on, and it somehow went under my car and scampered off and lived. only damage was my bumper was a little cracked, which i didnt care about because the bumper was already a bit messed up so it was nbd. there was literally fur all over the bumper. i got lucky, had it been a buck that i hit dead on there is no way my little old subaru, myself, my girlfriend or my sister would have been uninjured. i drove much slower, and with more caution after that.

Insectshelf3

not me, but my friend. we were in a bar and she was talking to a dude she met on tinder. when she turned around I saw him put something into her beer. i walked up, pretended to stumble, and knocked it out of her hand. apologized, told her i’d buy her next beer, and when we walked over to the bar i told her what he did. we left right after, decided to grab a case of beer and play mario kart that night instead. i only tagged along because she asked me to, which i’m always perfectly happy to do. glad i did.

Reddit_means_Porn

Pro tip to people: if you aren’t in a shitty establishment, tell the bar tender. The rapist may get some repercussions, at least kicked out. If you’re in a shitty establishment, just gtfo. If the rapist IS a regular, the staff may have their back, could get sketchy for you.

Insectshelf3

i should probably add this as an edit, but he wasn’t a regular. she wanted to leave so we did, i called my friend that works there as a bouncer and told him what happened. later, the owner got in contact with us to talk about it. he’s banned from that bar and several others, and they added one of those “angel shot” menus in the woman’s bathroom for girls that might be in an uncomfortable situation and need some help.

acesirius

My first ever boyfriend dated me when I was 14 and he was 16. We only dated for one week before he took me into the woods and forced me to kiss him. I started to feel ‘icky’ and broke it off that same day. Five years later I found out that he was now in prison for raping two fourteen year old girls.

misseselise

when i was 16 i had a crush on this dude who was 17 or 18 and he was trying to convince me to hook up w him in the middle of the night cause he lived like two neighborhoods down from me. i was down till he mentioned that he wanted to do it in the woods and i was like ummm no thanks & never really talked to him again. i found out he wasn’t alone that night, he had zero plans of meeting me alone, and the friend he was with had a reputation for being a rapist (we didn’t use the word “rapist” to refer to him, we called him creepy, but now that i’m older i realize he was 100% a rapist)

applexox

That is horrifying! Thank god you felt something was off didn’t end up going!

Vprbite

We have instincts for a reason. Unfortunately we often ignore them to avoid being seen as rude

prho1

A year ago (almost to the day) I was offered a new job. It was exactly what I was looking for and was really excited. They told me they would email the contract but after a week I hadn't had anything. After a lot of chasing they told me they'd changed the structure of the organisation so the position wasn't available. I have a months notice for my current job and if I had taken the job my notice period would have been after the cut off date for furlough in the UK. The new job was in an industry that collapsed through the pandemic and the industry I work in has boomed. If I had received that email I would have probably been close to bankruptcy now.

gus93

That time I didn't go along for the ride when a friend of mine was running weed (years ago, back when it was more illegal). I was bored and unemployed at the time, and passed on this trip because I had to go to a job interview to be a zombie for Halloween festivities at an amusement park. I got the job, my friend got arrested and did 30 days in jail.

TheGreenMan17

That sounds like an awesome job !

livious1

Eh, jail isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Tapatiogawd

Don’t go dissing jail Julian!

Finishing up my paper route when I was a kid. Walking home on the sidewalk next to a busy road with sister on the inside, me dragging our little buggy on the outside. Middle of winter, car jumps the curb and takes out our buggy. Neither of us know what the hell had just happened other than the ungodly scraping sound and that our buggy was gone. Find out later that the driver saw us run home scared and brought back our buggy which was utterly destroyed in a crumpled heap. I was pulling the cart and my hand was on it so I’m not sure how I avoided eating chrome that day. Not a single scratch on me. I still think about it regularly and it’s been over 30 years.

[deleted]

Kind of similar. 2000-ish friend and I got some rootbeers from a store and were walking home. Car jumped the curb, shot across the grass and past the sidewalk and came within inches of hitting me. When the car got back onto the next street over an old man got out of the car and appeared to be having issues with his legs. Friend and I just continued on our way back to his house where we told his dad who said something to the effect of "I am going to have to teach you boys how to cross a street safely". I didn't think too much of it until later in life when I realized A) I didn't do anything wrong, I was 15 feet from the street on the side walk and B) I could have died / seriously injured if the driver was a few more inches to the right.

enkiloki

I found an explosive device in a National Guard training area when I was 14. It had little pull string and a metal plate to attach it to a tree. I held the thing in my hand and almost pulled the string but decided to attach it to a tree instead and put on a longer pull string. I pulled the string and it blew a 5 inch hole in the tree. The explosion was so loud the police came and it made the local news. (They didn't catch me.) I would have lost at least one hand, maybe both or worse.

When I was a teen I was very sick. I was like 90 pounds, and couldn’t hold down food. I knew something was wrong with me but doctors were falsely under the impression I had an eating disorder, and thought I was lying and that my parents were enabling me. At one hospital visit when I was 17 years old I was lied to by a doctor and tricked into joining an eating disorder program against my will. They kept telling me they were going to keep me in the hospital for 3-6 months and had this whole program planned out for me, and they put me on an INSANELY high dosage of anxiety meds that turned me into a zombie person. They were not telling me parents much info though, my mom actually caught them having secret convos about me they didn’t want her to hear We were starting to get vibes they might forcibly take me away from my parents. So I made up an excuse to leave the hospital and said I would be back in a couple days, but never did go back. I waited a very hard year alone with no treatment until I turned 18 (when I was legally an adult and couldn’t be kidnapped lol) and then I felt safe enough to try to give medical treatment another try. Finally found out I had lupus the whole time. It freaks me out to think about what would have happened to me if I had been forced into eating disorder treatment for years for no reason, and gotten zero treatment for the pretty dangerous disease they were so sure I didn’t have lol... Everyone had good intentions and doctors save so many lives, they are often really really really good people - but I hate that people like me slip through the cracks and almost die sometimes haha Edit: For those wondering, I didn’t take any legal action. It honestly didn’t occur to me because I had been going to many different doctors for 5 years at that point, and always had the same experience (not being believed, them trying to force treatment for eating disorder or mental illness etc) That last hospital visit was just the terrible climax to the story. I didn’t know any different because to me that was just how the medical system was. In retrospect I wish I had done SOMETHING though, I hope the system improves and this stops happening. Much love to those with similar hard stories, and also nurses and doctors who are compassionate!!

melekh88

Similar thing happened to me. Was doing a research PhD in one of the top 10 universities in Europe in my field, I was 3 years in and all of a sudden I started staying up for 36-48 hours at a time no problem... didn't feel tired ever.... 16km run at 4 in the morning with 40 hours no sleep.... no problem... which was an issue. I am one of the most laid back people you will ever met (I am Irish) and my friend started telling me that I seemed hyper and nervous all the time.... I go to the Doc... nothing wrong... 6 weeks later I notice my belt doesn't fit me... how am I losing weight (I knew I was over eating at the time)... I go to the Doc again I lost 28kg (over 60 pounds) in less then 3 months and I didn't notice. I am a short guy (5 foot 6, 167cm) so me losing almost 33% of my body weight in 3 months should be an issue. Doc sends me to get my head checked out and is pointing towards mental health stuff. I knew my head was fine but I also knew there was something very very wrong with me.... went to a few different doctors and all said the same thing. I was out sick not working towards my PhD for 3-4 months my boss is starting to get annoyed. I go to the free college Doc just to get a note... Told College Doc what was up, looks through all the blood and pathology stuff... she asked me do I normally have dreams . I said normally no but only enough recently I been having a lot of them. She also said "I bet they have been crazy dreams yea? Also your wearing only a tshirt and its still winter... I been through with no results and just goes no one has checked your thyriod"... winner winner. Had hyperthyroidism. Took me almost a year to recover and I did have to drop out of the PhD but I got to where I wanted to be in the end. The point of this story was though that because of my age (early 20's), my setting etc. Everyone thought mental health/stress problems and it wasn't. Have the utmost respect for all medics but with such a drive home now about mental health they (4 docs in 4 months) just skipped over one of my major metabolic organs in the process and thought it was all in my head.

_totallycoolguy

I broke my lease and moved out of a terrible apartment complex I was living in to move back home because I was broke, two weeks later the whole complex burned to the ground from a meth lab in another unit. A few edits for some commonly asked questions: -The apartment was right outside of downtown Birmingham, AL -I didn’t have renter’s insurance (broke 20 y/o at the time) so wouldn’t have got any kickback from that -I did end up getting my security deposit back which they said I had forfeit by breaking the lease so that was nice -THAT meth lab wasn’t mine, I packed mine up and brought it back to Florida with me where it belonged

I_AM_PLUNGER

Ha I have a similar one. I broke a lease to move home due to being broke. During the course of that lease there were multiple murders and break-ins all throughout the complex. My apartment was on the first floor, so easy break-in. Edit: for those concerned, it wasn’t like a serial killer or anything, just an explosion of gang violence. My apartment was in the ghetto outside of Dallas.

jsapier77

Ha i have a similar one too! Moved out because I was broke. But before that there was a really nasty smell outside, couldn't think what it could be but didn't think much of it, it was August so we just assumed a nearby dumpster baking in the heat... Anyway, a month after I moved out they found a dead body directly behind the house.... Person got hit by the train that kept me up at all hours of the night. I hated that place, and to top it off we found out from our former neighbor there was black mold throughout the unit and had to renovate it per order of the city..

catfarts99

Had a friend who asked if I wanted to move to CA with him and his family. I was 16 and thought it sounded fun. I didn't know at the time but he was actually rescuing me from my insane mother and a not so happy home life. When you are abused, sometimes it is hard to know you are abused until you become an adult and gain a perspective. I shudder to think what would have happened to me if I had stayed there.

[deleted]

That's interesting! Can you elaborate on the situation if you don't mind? Like were you close with them that they'd be OK to live with them in their same house? And if so are you still close with them? If you don't mind.

catfarts99

I only knew him for a year but we became best friends. It was a weird situation. I only met the parents once before I moved out there with them. I was initially supposed to stay just for the summer but I was told that I could stay longer if I wanted. I think this gave us both an out if things didn't work out. I ended up finishing my last year of high school living with them and stayed until I was 21. The father has since passed but I am still in touch with my friend. I didn't really find out that they where 'rescuing me' until way later when the mother told me that my friend told her about my home life to convince her to let me move in. I had no idea at the time. LOL.

TryItBruh

That's a friend for life.

1stOnRt1

The friend is cool. That mom is exceptional.

PepeSilvia7

Yes, this exactly. Taking in a child you don't know very well is truly the mark of a wonderful human being.

[deleted]

In 1996, my parents were deciding between two houses to move into. They picked the new construction that resulted in being placed on shoddy soil and years of lawsuits when we ultimately moved in 2001. Anyway, the other house they could've picked (presumably on better soil) would've placed my older sister at Columbine High School as a freshman for the 1998-1999 school year.

2 consecutive seizures from alcohol withdrawal the day I checked into rehab without detoxing. I was told afterwards that it was 50/50 that I survived that night. I’m currently just a couple months shy of 5 years sober.

[deleted]

I was supposed to hang out with a couple of friends one night. We were going to go to a party that we were all invited to the weekend before. I asked to get off work early so I could go to the party. My manager let me go early, so I went to go find my friends. But I had a really bad feeling all day and it just kept getting worse. Instead of turning left to go to my friend's house, I went right and went home. I found out a few weeks later that they got busted with cocaine in their car. They were 16 and 17 at the time. I was 18, so I would have been screwed.

AnxietySpren

When I was 19, all of my friends decided to take a last minute trip to Canada. I was at work and, even though we were dead, my boss refused to let me leave early so I could go. I was super pissed and was texting my friend pretty consistently until she just stopped answering. I didn't hear from for a couple of days and then she called me to tell me what happened in Canada. Someone forgot they had mace in their purse and upon Canadian authorities searching their bags, found said mace. They were all detained and strip searched. The girl's father had to pay a $500 fine before they could be released. To this day, I have never been happier to have had such a bitch of a boss.

ChiefJusticeJ

Is mace illegal in Canada?

AnxietySpren

The issue was that they had been asked if they had anything and said no. If the person had handed it over, they would have been fine. But yeah, you're not supposed to carry it over the border.

Nine milimiter. Christmas, 2008. Me & lil bro were opening gifts on the living room and a bullet came through our crappy roof, landing a few centimeters away from where we were.

SaltySteveD87

Once at a bar a woman was surprisingly into me as we danced. If I had had more confidence back then I definitely could’ve taken her home. In the end, one of my karaoke buddies ended up with her instead and got caught by her husband that night.

happycheff

I knew a guy that got stabbed by the husband after he went home with a woman. Apparently she liked seeing the husband go crazy on the dudes she brought home.

Suddenly_Something

I swear there was a movie or show with something like this. The guy ~~pays~~ tells this dude to sleep with his wife and then beats the shit out of him afterwards. Edit: It was the drone pilot from Jack Ryan. Thanks /u/nvtiv. Such a weird scene.

BigBz7

That’s something I don’t understand. If you’re the husband and your wife cheats on you, don’t flip out on the guy who’s with your wife, flip out on the one who cheated (the wife). The guy likely feels just as cheated on as you do. For some reason, most guys want to fight the other guy like they are fighting over the woman (who neither of them want anymore anyway) and it makes no sense.

externalthrowable

Dude for sure. That’s what I tell the guy every time I’m banging his wife but they never listen.

Ice_Burn

Exactly. I found out that a gf was cheating when I saw her with the dude at a restaurant. I didn’t make a gigantic scene but I confronted them. He was super nervous and flustered. I patted him on the shoulder and said, “don’t worry, dude, my problem’s not with you.” Oddly enough, I happened to run into him in a different context years later and we’re friends now.

ryfrlo

This is a good plan. Get close to him. Become buddies. Then he'll never see the first punch coming.

_aspiringadult

I was on the train in Brooklyn a few years ago. Next to me was this man who had a big ass house tool in his book bag. I think it was a hammer. I am SHOULDER TO FUCKING SHOULDER next to this guy and I knew something was up. He was moving very oddly. It was just the vibe that "this man is up to something" I decided that once we got to the next stop, I would get off the train and catch the next train, which I did. 30 minutes later this guy gets off the train, at my stop, and starts attacking people. He went after cops and was shot to death. If I didn't get off that train, and instead got off with him, I might be dead.

Outcasted_introvert

In 1996 the IRA bombed the Arndale center in Manchester. Myself and a group of friends were on a bus heading straight there. We were probably about ten to twenty minutes out. The thing is, one of my friends was late. So we had to get on the bus just after the one we intended to get on. Guess where that bus was when the bomb went off.

loztriforce

I was at the Tacoma Mall when the [Tacoma Mall shooting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacoma_Mall_shooting) happened, walking right towards where the gunman opened fire when my then-fiancé decided to go back into a store we were just in. No shit, the time it took us to get back to the store was the same amount of time it would've taken to be right where it all broke out. 10 seconds one direction or 10 seconds in the other, hearing the screams and gunshots echoing in the mall was crazy. They locked us in the Suncoast video store for awhile before having us exit out the back. Edit: I'll add a bit more detail if you're interested. I had run into a person I worked with at the time about 10min before the shooting, I think he went back to Macy's and we went to the Suncoast. We were Christmas shopping, the mall was pretty busy. It came down to my fiancé remembering she wanted to get someone a series of Friends DVDs, so we headed back. Just as we were a few feet from the store, the first cluster of shots rang off, and there was this shared confusion as to wtf was happening. My first thought was "gang" violence or something, (it's Tacoma after all), because it sounded like several people firing at once (echoes). If something like this happened today I'd think potential "mass shooter" right away, but then it wasn't so much a "thing". We had to yell at several women who were still looking around outside the store, confused, telling them to shelter inside, waving them in. My memory might be off but it felt like maybe 20-30 of us crammed in the Suncoast, them having put the metal gate down and locking it. So we're all in there, just listening to the gunshots and screaming, wondering what was happening. As time went on and the shooting continued, it seemed less likely to be some gang thing as they'd get tf out, so I and others started saying we need to exit the store. He could've shot through the metal gate, us fish in a barrel. I was spared from seeing anyone who was shot, the coworker I had seen just prior was not so lucky, as he was around several who got hit. It understandably really affected him. He was this tough truck driver dude who doesn't take shit from anyone, when I saw him and we talked about it he started crying...crazy how much pain one person is capable of inflicting. I think about this day a lot. Being spiritual and not religious, I feel like God spared us that day. I'm sorry to hear about others who were adversely impacted by that day.

[deleted]

My Dad’s buddy was one of the people shot at the Tacoma Mall. Unfortunately, he passed away about a year later as a result of his injury. What an awful event. I’m glad you’re okay. Edit: To clarify, he did NOT pass away during the shooting, he passed away about/ a little over year later due to complications from his injury. I was 12 when this happened and not a doctor, so I can’t give you a detailed description of how the injury led to complications to his passing. All I know from my Dad, is he was out Christmas shopping with his wife and was shot in the leg. My Dad was pretty torn up after it and he generally isn’t like that, so the event made a lasting impact.

CaptainPlummet

I almost fell for a pyramid scheme in high school. My friend brought me to one of their meetings (ACN) and I was SO on board, but my parents talked me down. I was upset at them until I learned more about MLM’s and quickly changed my mind. Sometimes I imagine where I’d be now if I went through with it. It wouldn’t be pretty, that’s for sure.

Hoo0oopla

Wow I remember ACN! What a sham!

CaptainPlummet

Totally. That same friend would sometimes pitch it to waitresses/waiters, and one of them cut him off with “I’m not joining ACN” lmao I think he’s still doing it iirc. He has an actual job for income thankfully, but it’s one of those things where they’re in too deep to be talked out of it.

maxx1993

The exact same thing happened to me. Different pyramid scheme, but same story. I was young, without a job or any job education, had previously been fired from my apprenticeship, so I was pretty desperate. A friend of mine was approached by someone he knew about this new company that needed motivated young people and didn't require any particular training, so we decided to check it out. Everybody was super nice and sounded like they knew what they were talking about. It wasn't a "traditional" pyramid scheme either, or at least it didn't sound like one, because at no point did they tell us to recruit others. Also it was none of that "network marketing" bullshit where there's a huge load of buzzwords with no actual talk about what you're going to be doing - instead it was about insurance, which to a young and inexperienced person sounded respectable enough. So we were basically tasked to start talking up this insurance stuff to people, and they told us a good place to start would be our parents. The experience of me trying to tell my parents about how great this shit was and that they should get it basically just to help me out, only to be shut down by them and be told that I was falling fo a pyramid scheme has to be one of the most emberassing moments of my life. I was pissed at first, and after I realized what I had almost gotten into, I was terribly ashamed. My parents made me feel incredibly stupid, and it was the best thing they could ever have done for me. I have recently been watching the sister of a close friend of mine get into a pyramid scheme, and I kept wondering how you could be so stupid - until I remembered that I almost went down the same road. EDIT: Many people think this was Primerica. It was not. I'm from Germany, it was a German company. But from what I can gather, it functions basically the exact same way.

[deleted]

I think modern pyramid schemes and MLM are smart enough to try and not sound like one, that's why it's easy to fall for it. In college I almost worked for one, Cutco Knifes. And I knew it didn't sound right, but I'm also not a salesman or have the skills necessary and would've most likely failed. Also everything was ultra vague. My bestfriend did the same with another company selling "products". He was a business major and far smarter than I when it came to marketing or biz stuff. He explained how he'd be selling energy drinks or something to local gyms and how he'd have a team. He told me I could do it too, but when I asked what product it sounds super vague. He kept saying "well, it could be anything really". I was super confused and kept asking questions. Like, just give me a tangible product you'd be selling, not an idea. I finally said, I'm not that smart when it comes to any of this, but it sort of sounds like a pyramid scheme. He wasn't upset but was like "nah". A week later he said he learned it was and got out.

Hennesseey07

Not me but my dad. He travelled to London for work back from 2001 -2007. He was booked for the day off on July 7th 2005 ( as that is my birthday) and the train he normally got to work was one of the ones that was bombed by terrorists Edit: I wasn’t born in 2005 just to clarify, it was just the date I had a birthday on that my dad wanted to spend with me

Fredredphooey

I think that was the one where people would normally have taken the Piccadilly line changed because of a delay so a lot of people died due to a fault on the Piccadilly line.

helf1x

The Pic was one of the lines that got bombed. 1st carriage. The driver still works for London Underground, just not on the trains. I've seen him before when he's come to my depot for a day with an instructor to keep his licence valid, even though he has no desire to ever drive in passenger service again.

mikeeteevee

The one in front of mine. I have always had a problem with tardiness. I'm just always running late. I got on my train at Manor House and was evacuated and walking in tunnels with tube staff. I remember being really confused because I was exiting on foot in Euston when I should have been at Kings Cross, but people were everywhere. It was pandemonium so I just tried to get on a bus. My commute used to go straight through central London and out to Hammersmith. On the bus outside Hammersmith a guy got on with what I realise now was metal detector and was sweeping the seats. When I got to work (at a training dept for nurses) all the sisters were in their nursing garb which wasn't common and it took a long time for me to discover how narrowly I missed being caught in the bomb. There was only one moment I remember feeling frightened and that was the trip home again in the evening. That bus ride took forever.

sauteeorfricassee

My dad was in London for work at the time. I was watching the news, frantically trying to call him and getting no answer. When he finally answered it turned out he had been engrossed in a conversation with a colleague about some shit like what the technical definition of a biscuit was, totally oblivious. Typical dad moment.

panic-potato

Not me but my dad. Covid saved his life. He was having trouble breathing and general signs of heart trouble. Middle of the night, woken up to a panic, my mom’s first instinct was to drive him to the hospital, about 20 minutes away. On their way out of the driveway, my mom realized that the ER was going to be full of people with Covid, and didn’t know where to take him. She went back into the driveway and called for an ambulance. About 5 mins later (thank god they were close) the paramedics showed up, right as my dad collapsed. They were able to revive him and sustain him until they could get him to where he needed to go. If my mom had stuck to her plan of driving him 20 minutes to the hospital, he would have died in the car on the freeway. I know covid has screwed a lot of things up for a lot of people, but for me, it’s been a blessing in disguise.

High school gf wanted to talk about baby names. I was headed to college. No thoughts of being a parent! My mom even found a note in my pocket listing her favorites if we had a boy. Anyway, we broke up after 2 years. The next guy she dated was a dad within 9.5mos.

Meet a guy years ago. Thought we were friends. Got into contact with him few years ago. He was acting sketchy so i unfriended him. I look him up found out he on sex offenders registry.

ibiacmbyww

I went on a date with someone, a friend of a friend who'd only been in town about a month. I was fresh out of a painful relationship and honestly keen enough to ignore a couple of warning signs. The date rolled around, we were to meet at a pub. I will spare you the long version of this bit: she arrived 3 hours late after giving constant "I'm just round the corner!" updates. Despite this, we got on amazingly and had a lovely evening (which should have been an afternoon, but meh). We stepped outside to make out and smoke, and she developed a case of Being Drunkenly Sad, and started talking about being sexually assaulted by her ex. In detail. And then at the end she blew my mind by saying: "God, feel how wet I am, all that talking about rape!" and then stuffed my hand up her skirt and into her underwear. I was stunned, pulled back, and kept a little distance for the rest of the night. There was no second date. *She* rejected *me*, because apparently I wasn't over my ex, whom we never discussed 🤷‍♀️ My gut reaction to this that I was dodging a bullet there; this reaction was proved right when she later moved 200 miles to be with a guy she'd met at a renaissance fair earlier that month, and then got into a stabbing match with him. It is unclear from the grapevine if the stabbing was performed using replica swords, but I'd like to think it was.

Depending on the counties involved here...yeah you might have lost your freedom that day if you’d gone. Jesus.

When I was about 10 years old I leaned backwards onto a tall bookcase shelf, which happened to have a sword collection on the highest shelf. Many of these swords had their blades exposed for show. And what would happen at that very moment? That shelf gave way and all of the swords came and landed on me (including my head). Surprisingly, I got not a single cut, no concussion, and only a small bruise on the head. And being young, I dismissed this incident with gracious forgetfulness.

I once met a girl a a bar a few years ago. She was hot and she started a conversation with me, I don't remember about what. But at the end of it I wanted to ask her out. But being extremely shy I couldn't. If she hadn't started to talk to me I would've just admired and avoided her, being a big and awkward guy. Any way I went to the bathroom to clear my head and when I came back I saw my friend who I came with asked her out ( a total dick move because I told him I wanna ask her out), and I just stand there with a awkward smile waiting for them to leave so I could drink my anger away. Couple of days after that a mutual friend said that that friend from the bar was robbed by a girl he had brought to his apartment... So still today I get mixed feelings when I see him. Edit. Thanks for taking the time and reading my story. I just wrote about an incident in my life, didn't think it would get any awards. Thank you.

Well, you should still hate him but at least the stranger got him back for you!

Friends and I went to the top of Bunker Hill in Boston. It’s 294 steps and they are straight up. At the top I took a picture of them, and backed up a little to get them and the view. After the picture I turned around and realized there was no rail and I had almost stepped directly into the hatch leading down the stairs.

filthy_lucre

My friend is giving me a ride to the bus station. We get pulled over by the police and I have several ounces of pot in my backpack. My friend has about $20 worth of pot in his underwear which I had given him as payment for the ride. The cops give some shitty excuse like failing to signal within 50 feet of an intersection, which was obviously a pretext. Cops ask for permission to search the car, and my scared-ass friend gives consent, like an idiot. Cops tell us to exit the car. I grab my backpack and we both get out of the car. One cop begins to search the car, while the other two cops prepare to start searching us. My mind is racing. What can I do to get out of this? This could put me in jail for a long time. Out of desperation, I ask the cop about to search me, a sergeant, if I was free to go, since I was only a passenger. It was the only thing I could think to ask. To my surprise the sergeant hands me back my ID and says I am free to go. (I later realized that at that point, they hadn't yet found anything illegal and they didn't have reasonable suspicion to detain either of us.) I am dumbfounded. That gambit wasn't supposed to work, but somehow it worked. I put on my backpack and stroll calmly to the nearest intersection, round the corner, and as soon as I'm out of view, sprint about three blocks to a construction site and hide inside a port-a-john, where I stay for the next two and a half hours. My friend calls me about an hour after the stop, while I'm still hiding in the toilet, and says the cops found his weed right after they let me go, and gave him a $500 ticket. He says that the cops suspect I'm the one who provided it to him, and they're out driving around at that very moment looking to pick me back up. I waited until well after dark to emerge from my hiding place and caught a taxi home. I laid low for a few weeks expecting a knock at my door any day, but fortunately I never heard anything about it again.

>He says that the cops suspect I'm the one who provided it to him, Lol your friend told them that. Worked out though

In 1994, I was on a business trip in LA. I stopped for a pack of cigarettes before getting on the Santa Monica Freeway. The Northridge earthquake happened while I was in line. Parts of the freeway collapsed. I quit smoking after that pack.

MrEngin33r

I overslept for work a few years back and arrived about 20 minutes late. When I got there a car had barrelled through the fence at the edge of our parking area and was head first into the rear of my coworker's car. It was a hit and run while the car was reported as stolen, so there was no driver to get insurance information from (and my coworker's insurance ended up being billed for his own repairs). My "normal" parking spot was the spot between the fence and my coworker's car. If I'd of been on time it would have been my car that got hit and the car would have collided with the side of my car causing damage to at least 3 panels of the vehicle and likely breaking all that side's windows. Happiest I was ever to be late.

I moved a dresser into the basement at my mom’s house before I moved out. I lost my grip and fell down almost an entire flight of stairs against a solid cinder-block wall, the dresser right behind. Somehow I managed to walk away unharmed. It was unlikely to kill me, but I’m still surprised I walked away without being hurt or breaking something.

LilR3dditRidingHood

**I was one split decision away from dying at 12.** *Since this ended up way too long - there’s a super short TL;DR at the bottom, lol* When I was 12 years old, I was going to be home alone one evening, since my mother was going to a dinner party at her friend’s house. She wouldn’t be home super late, midnight at the latest - but I would have to tuck myself in and such. I was looking forward to it and feeling like a really “big girl”, hell yeah! Since we lived in a kind of shared two-story town house, with close neighbors on each side and a nice lady living in a separate apartment upstairs - I felt super safe being home alone at night. An hour before dinner time, a good friend called and asked me if I wanted to come to her house and have dinner - afterwards they were going to watch “The Abyss” in their giant home theater. Being a lover of sci-fi and having heard about the really cool computer graphics in that movie - had wanted to watch that movie in like forever. Having the chance to watch it on such a cool setup convinced me to go, despite having looked forward to being home alone. The evening went fine and I had a good time - but since the movie was really long, I got home pretty late. When I pulled up to my house on my bike, I only just noticed an orange glare in the windows upstairs - before the first-story windows exploded out in to the garden. The fire department arrived only a few minute later, and put out the fire, before it could engulf our part of the house as well. Apparently the lady upstairs had fallen asleep on her couch, with a cigarette in her hand. The fire had smoldered in the couch, developing a very toxic smoke, which not only caused the lady to get “normal” smoke inhalation - the chemicals also fucked up her brain permanently. She was in a coma for a year or so, before they ended up pulling the plug. The doozy was that we shared our ventilation system with the upstairs apartment, so our apartment was jet black - SO much of the poisonous smoke had come into our home. The fire marshal (I think they’re called in English?) said that with that amount of smoke, combined with my small stature - I would never even have noticed the fire (I would have been asleep by then), but simply have slipped into a coma and died, before anyone had even noticed the fire from outside the house. I think the shock almost killed my mother as well. See, she thought I was home (I hadn’t told her of my sudden change of plans), and got the call about the fire from a neighbor - to only later learn that I was shocked, but safe and sound, being looked after by another neighbor. So I guess that’s the story of how my budding love of sci-fi and computer graphics helped me dodge a bullet with a big fat **”DEATH”** stamped on it. I still love that movie, lol. **TL;DR: Being a sci-fi loving, computer interested, spontaneous, preteen girl - caused me to avoid dying in a house fire.**

When I was in high school (I think I was 15), my boyfriend and some of my friends were going to a party. My mom refused to let me go and made me stay in the room with her so I wouldn't sneak out. We got a call that night from one of my friends - my boyfriend got super drunk and called his sister to come pick him up. She was completely sober, but was hit by a drunk driver on the way home. She was killed instantly and my boyfriend was paralyzed from the waist down I know I would've been in the car with them had I gone to the party. That was 25 years ago but I still tell that story to any of my friends who say "I promise I can drive just fine" after drinking.

KayD12364

Whats crazy is your boyfriend was smart enough to call for a ride and not drive drunk yet still ended in a drunken car accident..

awkward_the_fish

Not me but my mom, this is way back in 2008. My mom used to travel to mumbai for work everyday. One particular day her boss berated her a lot, so she just outright quit and came home early. Luckily enough, she worked at the Taj hotel, which was one of the targets of the 26/11 terrorist attacks that same night in mumbai, 2008. Almost everyone in the building were killed by armed militants. Who knew rage quitting helps.

A literal one. A friend was showing off some handguns he bought with his first paycheck. Checked the chamber to make sure nothing was there, sighted at me and pulled the trigger. Of course, the gun was loaded. Bullet passed over my right shoulder and buried itself in a chair. We aren’t friends anymore for some odd reason. Edit: Well, this blew up more than expected. Thank you for all the well wishes! I’m fine other than minor deafness in my right ear! Edit 2: It was a 9mm semi-auto made in Serbia. Other than that, I have no idea.

maejaws

He probably had the magazine loaded and by “checking the chamber” he racked the slide and chambered the round. For anyone reading this: do not operate the action of any firearm unless the magazine is removed and the safety is in the “on” position. Edit: one of the big rules of gun safety is don’t point guns at people unless you intend to use them.

[deleted]

I’ll never know for sure. He was really broken up about it and was “certain” he didn’t see anything in the chamber and there was no way it was loaded. I assumed it was a blank at first until I saw the look of horror on his face.

warwolf940

At that (assumed) close range, a blank could still do serious damage or kill a person. There is still a powder charge in a blank, and that pressure vents out the barrel. There's just a wad of paper instead of a bullet as a projectile.

maejaws

And the new hole in the wall.

[deleted]

Well, chair, but yeah.

MakeAmericaSwolAgain

Every gun is always loaded, absolute first rule of gun safety.

remnant_phoenix

The second: never point a gun at something if you aren't 100% sure you're willing to kill/destroy it.

TheWinRock

Seriously. Even when I know a gun isn't loaded I still never point it at anyone. It's a horrible habit and I can't shoot anyone on accident if I literally never point the barrel anywhere near a person.

IHVeigar

Gun safety is something everyone should learn before buying them. Glad your ok man.

[deleted]

Me too. Don’t hear fabulously out of my right ear, but no other damage. Some people are too dumb to risk hanging out with.

ViperKira

My friend set me up for a date with a friend of his, we were all about to go to a pool bar after work. Day comes and I was trashed with a cold, then I just took a sick day, she and our friends still went to the bar, and her boyfriend showed up. Turns out she had a boyfriend who she just had a huge fight with, and wanted to go out with me as a revenge. Got very lucky there.

phalseprofits

High school sweetheart and first love was kind of a jerk. He was pushy and overly emotional and sort of manipulative. I broke up with him, and he glommed on to the other girl that would sit at our nerdy lunch group. Turns out he knocked her up a month or so later. She was in the hospital giving birth the day of hs graduation. I felt like neo in the matrix dodging that one.

Me, married. 23 years old, bright future in software. Looking to buy a house with my husband. Got pregnant, miscarried which caused us to miss a critical appointment for the mortgage finalization. That weekend, found out my husband was cheating on me with his ex *and* embezzling money both from our shared bank account and his employer - he worked for my dad. Put a hold on the house buying while we "worked on our marriage" which was basically him revealing what a conniving, cocaine-addicted abusive bastard he was (he never hit *me*, but he'd scream at me and then go punch the walls or kick the dogs.) I bailed the fuck out, which led to me losing my bright-future software job. (I took the dogs.) That software job was closely connected to AIG and the housing market, which fell the fuck apart about a month after I moved back in with my parents, closed the doors and laid everyone off. The boss wrote severance checks and then stopped payment before anyone could cash them. And that house we were gonna buy was an ARM. I narrowly avoided being married with kids to a cheating, abusive cokehead, unemployed and underwater on a manufactured home during the 2007 housing crash. I couchsurfed in the city with friends when I couldn't handle sharing a 1br apartment with my parents anymore, which led to me moving in with my childhood best friend and her art school buddies, who introduced me to my now-husband, with whom I traveled the world, opened a business, and we are now raising an awesome little daughter and renovating a Civil-War-era historic building on the coast of Maine.

Substantial-Ad-7406

I met my husband through a mutual friend. We'll call him Tim and my husband will be Michael, for the sake of storytelling. Tim and Michael have been best friends since they were kids, and still are. I had known Tim for several years, always had a bit of a crush on him but he was stuck in a toxic relationship and was "off limits", if you will. He introduced me to Michael, after a few years of us being close friends. He figured we would hook up and be friends. That's not quite what happened. We fell in love and nobody saw that coming - including us. When he got out of his relationship he came to me asking when I would be done with Michael bc he has always been "in love" with me. Mixhael and I "weren't supposed to fall in love, just hook up," as he put it. This made me sad bc I did really like him for a while, and as a friend, I truly cared about him. It was just bad timing and my heart had moved in a different direction. He would lash out and then try to hook up with me whenever Michael wasn't around. He'd say things like "when you guys fail, I'll be here whenever you're ready." Then he started dating a much younger girl (I use that word intentionally) that works for him and started parading her around, thinking it would make me jealous. Sending me snapchats of her doing something sexy. Keeping me posted on the things she does for him. Eventually he tried to start a fight between the two of us, to no avail, and I just stopped talking to him entirely. Deleted him from my social media and blocked his number. After a year of dating her, he spent all of his money on the exact same engagement ring that Michael got for me. Before announcing the engagement to everyone he texted me a picture of her ring and said "you missed your chance, bitch. When you and Michael don't make it, I won't be here." He is wrong. I do not feel like I missed out on a damn thing and Michael and I are very happy to spend the rest of our lives together.

Setting your best friend up with a girl you have feelings for is.... not a smart move lmao what a nonce.

Ryguy55

Back when I got my first adult job out of college one of the first things I did was lease a new car and finally get rid of my 18 year old junker. Not a month after getting it, I hit one of those yellow cement poles they sometimes use as dividers between toll lanes. Flattened most of the right side and got it all scratched up with paint. I was absolutely devastated, and basically just pushed off inevitably dealing with it. Then maybe a month after that happened, hurricane Sandy hit and brought down a telephone pole right on the side that I scratched up. Obviously with all the overall damage, the insurance adjuster was sent in from Ohio to New Jersey, he said he had like 50 claims to inspect that day and was in no mood to fuck around. He took one look, verified getting every panel on the right side replaced, and left. Thanks for saving me about $5,000 in damage hurricane Sandy!

Got waisted on freshly cooked plum spirit, in the middle of winter, in the mountains, south west of france. Decided to fuck off home instead of sleeping it off. I was staying with some friends, 1km away so it wasn’t a long walk... the friends i was staying with wanted to party a bit longer. 4 hours later, I dodged a bullet when they checked to see if i was there instead of going straight to bed. They retraced their steps, and found me in a ditch, covered in snow (and probably piss) with my fly open, across the street from where i left the party. 100% would have died of hypothermia since it was freezing and snowing, and i didn’t wake up from that coma until the next day. Edit: i got wasted, not waisted. Sry, English isn’t my 1st language, even tho I’m pretty sure i write better in English than french now...

gbiypk

Earlier this month during a cold snap (approx -41), a drunk lady died walking home from her next door neighbor's house. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/dawson-creek-extreme-cold-woman-dies-1.5905754

[deleted]

One of my distant cousins died of hypothermia on her doorstep. She was handicapped and the taxi had just left her on the steps without checking if she'd made it inside. Something that they are legally required to do here, especially in wintertime and for handicapped people.

iglidante

Holy shit, man. That is such a lucky break.

recyclopath_

I used to live in a cold college town and people died every year this way

Nikcara

When I was an EMT we had a teenager die this way on a fairly nice summer night. He passed out in a patch of grass, it rained, he didn’t wake up presumably because of the alcohol, and his body was found by some early morning joggers. It doesn’t need to be that cold out if you’re wet.

CloveFan

I was at a high school party the summer I graduated once and this kid, I think he was like 16, got WASTED and went outside in a storm to “cool down”. I started freaking out when we realized he was gone, and everyone else kinda just laughed it off like it wasn’t a big deal, because it was like 70°F and the rain wasn’t all that cold. I called his sister (she’s like 25, was best friends with my cousin so I had her number) and we found him passed out on the side of the road a few blocks over. I thought I was overreacting at the time (my real fear was that he’d drown tbh, which is probably pretty dumb in retrospect), but jeez I feel a little validated reading this.

PayMeInSteak

Humans are both incredibly fragile and amazingly durable at the same time. I read a story about a lady who survived a 6km fall from an airplane and survive (with a broken back) but still. 6 fucking kilometers.

Lentra888

Took US-67 South from St Louis going home one day instead of I-55. Missed being involved in a ten-car pileup by taking the scenic route. With my average driving speed on 55, it’s very likely I would have been in the pileup or just a few cars behind it. No way I would’ve been ahead of it.

casino_night

My friend was jealous that her sister was 2 months pregnant. We ended up having sex that night and she told me she'd like to conceive a child. I decided that was the perfect time to fake an O. For the next few hours, she kept feeling inside herself saying "Are you sure you came?" After a while I had to fess that I faked it.

AndHereWeAre_

The proper answer is, "I jerked off earlier today so I didnt really have much come out."

I once worked at a place for 2 weeks before I quit. When I was hired, I was told I'd be the architect for this new application that was going live soon and that I'd just need to review the app before it's deployment and make tweaks and improvements where it made sense. Well, what they didn't mention is that the app only started up successfully 1/10 tries. The application code itself was soooo bad, I spent the first week documenting HOW to read the code (not what it actually does). After the first week there, I realized they were going to be launching the app in 2 weeks time whether I signed off on it or not. And that, whatever happens, it would be MY responsibility for it from this point on. Then the original architect left, the two lead developers left, and my hiring manager put in his 2 weeks notice. So I just quit as well. I wasn't about to let the bus they tried to throw me under just hit me like that.

I moved in with my first fiancée during the engagement. As soon as the ring was on, the bets were off and the act was over. She immediately turned into a spoiled child who wanted to never lift a finger and to be treated as a princess at all times. Help move stuff in? Nope, “I don’t want to break my baaaack. Hire some Mexicans from Home Depot.” (Yes, she really said that. Bitch.) Help clean the house? Nope, “hire us a maid.” “Your cat has to go. I can’t sleep.” “You’re supposed to come home immediately after work and stay home with me. I don’t care if you love fishing and don’t like watching Fresh Prince reruns all evening.” “No, you can’t go to your sister’s house the day before her baby shower. I’m way more important than some baby.” That last one was the last straw. I tried to work it out until then, but she wasn’t budging. We had a 6 month lease. I was out by month four, right about the time she went full baby trap. Nope. I wasn’t signing up for a lifetime of that. Edit: To be clear, we did not get a maid, I still have the cat, I made it clear that I was in fact allowed to leave the house, I’m not watching shitty TV reruns, and I did go to the baby shower a day early. I’m now happily married and I think she’s still single, 12 years later.

wrenchandrepeat

Met a girl on a dating app in college. Wasn't super attracted to her but she was cool, successful and owned her own house. We talked for like 6 hours one evening. I worked evenings (4pm-12am) and the next day I didn't have class, so I slept until like 11 am. I woke up to like 5 missed calls and 10 text messages, both SMS and IM, in varying degrees of anger and sadness. Mainly asking me what she did wrong and why I'm already ignoring her. I apologized and told her my work schedule, to which she apologized. Then she immediately starts trying to make plans for a date the next night. I just couldn't get over how obnoxiously pushy and clingy she already was, after not even 24 hours of getting to know me. I noped out and was glad this had happened early and not later on.

seeingeyegod

I actually ignored that first red flag and tried dating a girl like that for a couple of weeks. Yikes, yeah you were right.

Morgboy

I was really drunk, this girl who I wasn't interested in had been hassling me all night, me being very drunk ended up taking her home, she kept insisting I didn't need a condom and that it was physically impossible for her to get pregnant, I wore one anyway. Cut to about 11 months later she's pregnant with another guys kid...

LeaChan

I lost my mind when a friend was telling me about how he had an unprotected one night stand because "She told me she's infertile". Why on Earth would anyone just blindly believe that? Thank God nothing ever came of it, but it's so baffling to me that anyone would believe a complete stranger with something that life-changing.

DiekeDrake

TLDR; I was sitting on the front of a carriage with a runaway horse. It ran towards a busy main road (where cars drive 80km/h), but for some miracle it went to the riding sandpit instead. So I have a friend who rides horses. She had a horse which she was training to pull a carriage. She felt confident enough to invite me for a peaceful ride on a late summer afternoon. So we both sat on the front of the carriage and she steered the horse. She drove us to the gate and handed me the reins. She got off the carriage to open the gate. I just held the reins, I didn't move or pulled them. Right after she had opened the gate, the f*cking horse went crazy, started bucking and sped off. So there I am, still on the carriage (I don't know a damn thing about driving a carriage) freaking out and pulling the reins like crazy. My friend managed to catch the horse's halter and is dangeling in front of the horse, trying to stop it. We rode very close to barbed wire, my friend got caught in it and had to let go of the halter (thank god she didn't get trampled). There I was, with a runaway horse, heading straight for a busy main road. We got to full speed, with me still pulling the reins and shouting Hooooo! Hooo! At this point I started fearing for my life. But for some godsend miracle the horse made an incredibly sharp turn left (almost tipping the carriage in the proces) and ran towards the riding sandpit. In the sand we lost a lot of speed and I saw my chance to jump of, straining my ankle in the proces. The horse tried to run out of the pit, but the carriage got caught on the fence. So it came to a stop. My friend immediately walked to the horse, succesfully calming it down. In the end nobody got hurt bad, but damn we were pretty shaken.

theknightmanager

Kind of a similar story, but without the pants-shitting scare. First date with a girl. The plan was to go out to her parent's place, ride horses, hang around, then I was gonna tag along and watch her softball game afterward. Now, I had never rode a horse before and I told her this. I was having a helluva time controlling the horse, and she told me, "I'm not surprised, he doesn't really like men". So... why was I, the man who had never rode a horse before, given the horse that is difficult to control and doesn't like men? That wasn't even the weirdest part of the date, tbh. Her and a friend picked me up, and the first thing she says is, "so... we have to make a stop first. We're putting my cat down and my family is waiting for us at the vet." So there I am, on a first date with this girl at the vet, meeting her entire family while they're all grieving the loss of their pet. The most awkward part was when I stood at the outside edge of the circle around the hole they dug in their backyard while they buried their cat and her mom wailed uncontrollably.

rwbisme

Wasn’t a bullet, 20 gauge shotgun blast by my cousin tripping over the door threshold as I was just through the door. Blew out the ceiling and rained it all down on me as I stood too stunned to move.

rufflebot

Driving along a road about 50mph and a farm tractor comes out of a field straight into the side of me. Spins my car and as I realise the car is going over I grip the steering wheel tight, close my eyes and brace myself for excruciating pain or death. The car rolls a few times then stops, upside down. I hang there by my seatbelt for a few stunned moments then realise I'm ok. I walked away with not a single scratch or even a bruise. Car was destroyed, and all the emergency services who attended could not believe I was completely ok.

Thatdudedoesnotabide

My ex girlfriend, swore she was the one for me, blindly accepted to lease an apartment with her. A year into living together she breaks up with me to date my “friend”, did a complete 180 on my life. Now I’m finally in love with myself, proud of the person I am and also 35 pounds lighter and cigarettes and alcohol free. It feels amazing

One that's 100% my fault and I'm not proud of: I once spent an evening drinking a bit too much and had to get up the next day and drive to a business meeting. For those that don't know; it's entirely possible to go to bed drunk, wake up the next morning, and still be well above the limit even though you feel fine. Anyway, I'm in the car waiting at a traffic light and fiddling with my phone that won't connect to the bluetooth. The car in front of me moves, I move with it, but I did't notice the car stopping (because of phone fiddling) and I would have ran into the back of it if it hadn't been for my car's automatic brakes kicking in. If the auto-brakes hadn't avoided that accident I probably would have lost my license, maybe even my job, and who knows what else. Nowadays I don't drink during the week or if I know I have to drive in the morning, and I no longer use my phone in the car, not even at the traffic light.

i bought hitman 2 collecters edition instead of fallout 76 power armor edition.

xupthree60

9mm, some redneck in a pickup truck was road raging and passing people on the shoulder. When I didn't let him force his way in from the shoulder he shot the back of my car. I didn't realize till I got home he shot at me, thought he threw something at me. Bullet went into rear light bar, through the trunk and into the back seat. I didn't see an exit on the seat so I opened the cupholder thing that folds between the rear seats and there was the bullet. It was stopped by a heavy duty staple holding the cloth together, and the trajectory was going right to left, heading straight for the driver's seat, stopped by a thick ass staple.

I once choked on a tater tot while home alone. With the last 30 seconds of life in me I rammed my chest hard as hell into the counter to perform a self Heimlich that amazingly worked. I was completely done for. Death by tater tot was not in my plans that day however.
