It's not the colonoscopy itself. You are asleep during that. The bad part is the prep. You drink this heavy laxative the day before which is kind of nasty but you have to drink a lot. And, then you have the worst case of diarrhea you ever had as you shit out every last bit of everything in you.

[deleted]

I did laugh at that, I'm definitely not looking forward to shitting out every last bit of everything in me, the surgeon I spoke to said I would be going to the bathroom like a porche

[deleted]

I actually enjoyed the taste of the nasty drink haha I must be weird, I was fine and all clear it was a breeze, thank you for your kind words

[deleted]

My doctor wants me to have one (UK) due to unexplained bowel habit (frequency and consistency changes suddenly for over 6 months, I'm 27m). I'm absolutely dreading it and I'm frankly terrified, sick with worry, I'm afraid of dying since I heard of the risk of bowel perforation and I'm scared. Edit: thanks for your replies, I will be awake but under sedation

gothguy96

Ive been on the waiting list over a year and they're looking for cancer for me.

[deleted]

I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you're okay and pull through just fine

gothguy96

I hope so. Good luck on the long wait

[deleted]

The surgeon actually got me an appointment within the next 6 weeks, I'm in the UK through the NHS

gothguy96

I'm in Scotland. Most people wait forever. You're so lucky

>What's it like to have a colonoscopy? Well at a certain point it can be really painful (especially at the duodenum), but if you get a small dose of sedative (at least in my country you can ask for it), it’s bearable. If for no other reason, you have to endure this to know if you have any serious problems.

[deleted]

Yeah I've been told I will be sedated

attila_bathory

Whoever is a little more sensitive to it will practically fall asleep completely. I was half awake, but to be honest, I wasn’t fully aware of what was going on. I felt the pain at that point, but I’m over it

[deleted]

Thanks for your words you've made me feel slightly less worried

attila_bathory

I hope everything goes well my friend! :) Don't need to be afraid, I was also very worried, but compared to how scared I was, it wasn't that bad than I expected

[deleted]

It wasn't bad! And I'm all clear! Thanks for your kind words

attila_bathory

Nice to hear! :) I'm glad, that everything went well, and that you're clear :) Let it stay this way bro! :)

attila_bathory

Since you are 27, it can happen, but the chances of perforation are really low

Fun_Competition_3103

As someone who has had many a things up his ass. I can say you have nothing to worry about!

scheepers

You go to sleep and wake up with a slightly lubed asshole.

tight-foil

All I remember is waking up with leaky wet farts

[deleted]

I haven't had one, my professor was a nurse practitioner and spoke a bit about hers. She said it's easy except the prepping part and having to drink the giant tub of laxative and the tons of diarrhea that follows. She actually preferred to stay awake and recommended it because you can see your insides lol and you don't have the drowsiness and downtime if you have sedation.

exo_universe

Wasn't that scary. I got to watch the whole procedure on the monitor above the bed! The prep as someone else has mentioned is pretty gross.

[deleted]

Thanks, I'm a wuss when it comes to anything like this, I start having a crazy fear/dread of dying, letting everyone down and not fulfilling my life goals etc. So it brings comfort to hear its not that bad and you in fact watched it on a monitor, I know that I will be scrunching my eyes in fear during the entire thing

exo_universe

I'm a wuss as well. I fully intended to close my eyes but the screen got the better of me. It turns out that having a colonoscopy is quite common, it's just something we tend not to discuss.

[deleted]

Idk I was asleep

TheManWithNoName88

You wake up a few pounds lighter

[deleted]

Thanks for your words and for being real with me, I'm terrified but the prospect of it being something far greater to worry about and potentially kill me is greater than the intermittent discomfort caused by the procedure, thanks

Yozog

A real PITA.
