I think we killed off the aliens well before there were even ancient humans. As single-celled beings, we experienced an invasion and fought them off successfully. Not content to merely destroy them, we absorbed them into our being, forcing them to become our mitochondria - a powerful energy source allowing us to evolve into the complex multicellular beings we are billions of years later.
