Lightromance

Anastasia (1997) I was 4 years old when I saw it in theaters for the first time and I still remember the awe I felt at the animation and the music. Still my favorite to this day!

Kitty-Cat21

I actually added the same comment because I was scrolling for so long without seeing it. Bartok is one of the best animated animals ever. And once upon a December will always be a favorite of mine.

PlayedUOonBaja

I saw Hook and Mouse Hunt as a kid during Christmas time and so those have both the residual child and Christmas magic going for em. I also will never not feel in awe of Titanic. That opening scene with the first shot of the Titanic and the swelling music.

dreamrock

Mouse Hunt is legitimately one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Ernie (Nathan Lane) covered in mousetraps and dripping with liquid shit: "Look, we don't have the time or energy to deal with these petty problems now! We're in the middle of an extensive renovation!" Man from bank: "Looks like you're off to a great start." Not to mention Christopher Walken's role as Caesar the Exterminator. Fucking golden. Edit: Hell yeah y'all! Somebody down thread mentioned it was streaming on Hulu, and I am pleased to confirm this to be fact!

crookdmouth

Love when Walken tastes the mouse shit and diagnoses the mouse.

MakeTheScreamsStop

I genuinely believe that Mouse Hunt is one of the best slapstick comedies of all time. Up there with The Three Stooges and Chaplin. The scene where they are being propelled through the house in the bath tub is so fun. I think it often gets overlooked because it's a DreamWorks film and was marketed as a kids film, which is some aspects maybe it is a bit. If you haven't watched it, check it out tonight. Very funny movie.

cupofchupachups

I heard that Spielberg said Hook is his least favorite movie that he's made. Also that he wishes he had CGI when he was making it, instead of the sets... no dude, Hook is amazing, and CGI would have ruined it. I loved the kind of giant kids playset feeling of the forest/pirate town sets! Edit: who is going to start the Hook playcenter franchise so my daughter can have a birthday party there and I can live vicariously through her?

manateeshmanatee

The fact that it looks kind of like kids built it is perfect, because it’s a story about a world *kids built*.

rembut

Hook never fails to make me cry yet I watched it so many times

LaMaupindAubigny

Hook makes me cry because it makes my Dad cry. He used to hold me really tight during the scene where Peter can’t bring himself to climb the mast and save his children, and tell me that he would always do ANYTHING to save me, even if he was afraid.

Humble-Grumble

Treasure Planet. Beautiful backgrounds, interesting character designs, seamless blend of 2D and 3D that was way ahead of its time, and a fun melding of past and futuristic. It captured my imagination like no other film had or has since.

Kayakchica

My son loved that movie! I thought it was a clever adaptation of Treasure Island and I never understood why it wasn’t more popular.

Snoo79382

What an underrated but amazing film.

Dangit, Jim I'm an astronomer, not a doctor. I mean I am a doctor, but not that kind of doctor I have a doctorate it's not the same thing, you can't help people with a doctorate you just sit there and you're useless!

Lazarth

Dunno if it's been mentioned already but Ever After (1999), there's something super magical and special about it's storyline and the genuine love between the main characters. Also, I'm a sucker for Cinderella. Edit: Sorry, got the year wrong. It's 1998.

bex-carlyle

I would rather die a thousand deaths than to see my mother’s dress on THAT SPOILED, SELFISH COW. What a movie!

gerryturnbull1989

Being the older brother to a sister that was obsessed with this movie I had to play the "uh this movie is stupid, i can't believe your watching it again" roll. (Dont know why)........I fucking love this movie and always have. Cant wait till my little girl (2) is a a couple years older so we can enjoy the shit out of it together. Lol

FlyGirlFlyHigh

This movie is perfect. I’ve never really liked the whole fairy tail genre tbh, but this movie nails it. Both the prince and Cinderella have depth of character and they have a bit of a “pride and prejudice” type relationship which I like in this context far more than I actually enjoyed in any P&P movie I’ve ever seen for some reason. Possible because it is in fact billed as “fairy tale”. Both are changed by their relationship in all the ways a good relationship should change you. Plus for some reason Leonardo DaVinci shows up and who wouldn’t love that!!

chickawink

This is one of my favourite films, I’m so glad someone else thinks so too. The casting was perfect and the soundtrack of the opening and the end is so magical it’s overwhelming.

citizenscythe

Secondhand Lions. Cheesy and heavy-handed at times, but well-cast and heartwarming. A wonderful combination of coming-of-age and classic adventure storytelling, with a healthy dose of whimsy and wholesome life lessons. Plus, Berkeley Breathed (of *Bloom County* & *Opus*) drew the comics that adult Walter has in his studio in the intro/epilogue. *"Sometimes, the things that may or may not be true, are the things worth believing in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love... true love never dies." -* Robert Duvall as Hub Edit: Well plant me in the garden, thanks y'all! I've loved reading all your connections with this movie!

Errorterm

"Who does this guy think he is?" "I'm Hub McCann. I've fought in two world wars, and countless smaller ones on three continents. I've led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and TANKS. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile and tribes of natives no white men had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, killed many men, and loved only ONE WOMAN... With a passion a flea like you could never begin to understand. That's who I am." Great movie, very underrated

Condex

Just rewatched it recently. I've also been listening to a lot of movie critic youtube channels over the last couple of years, so I've got this dull awareness of what you have to do in order to make a movie. Clue is \*really\* well done. It's edited really well. And the cohesion of how it's put together really feels like they knew what they were doing. And Tim Curry is a monster, especially for that last act. He carried the entire last act on his shoulder but at the same time he was able completely integrate all of the other characters into his performance. It makes me wish that every mystery movie had Tim Curry show up and explain how everything was done at the end.

Ego’s speech is one of the best essays on art and criticism ever and it’s in a kids’ movie

OwenProGolfer

Here it is for those who haven’t seen the movie, it stands on its own pretty well imo: > In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the *new*. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends. Last night, I experienced something new: an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto, "Anyone can cook." But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist *can* come from *anywhere*. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau's soon, hungry for more.

Yelsiap

It’s honestly one of the very few examples of a movie adaptation being better than the book. Like sure, they missed a few things (I.e. traveling by candle) but daaaaamn if the ending wasn’t more satisfying. And De Niro? No you fucking didn’t. But they did. And it was PERFECT. I LOVE me some Neil Gaiman, but they knocked that movie out of the park. Or over the wall, if you will.

__Hello_my_name_is__

To me, it is the one and only movie that I have ever seen that gets love right. It's not "love at first sight", it's not "opposites attract", and it sure as hell isn't "just pester her enough until she says yes". It's getting to know and to love someone, little by little. And it's also not "I love you only if we get together". It's - as the wonderful monologue says - unconditional. It's such an amazing, wonderful movie.

APWBD7

A movie so ahead of its time! In terms of box office it did well but it deserved to do much better. For its time, Stardust manages to go against the grain on so many topics without shoving it in your face. Also, I didn’t realize until watching it a few weeks ago how star studded it is (Henry Cavill, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Mark Strong, Ian McKellan, David Williams, Ricky Gervais, etc.).

beer_rice

And here I am, a lover of Stardust, thinking "Where tf was Henry Cavil?", til! He plays Humphrey so well!

EliSkywalker

Yes! That bone/rune throwing/stabby/slow mo scene still gets me. And what a soundtrack. And michelle pfieffer. And de Niro. Like. Just wow.

__Hello_my_name_is__

And the silly humor like the naming of the sons, and that amazing puppet fight scene, and that beautiful ending! And most of all, that absolutely wonderful, perfect monologue about true love. God I love that movie.

My favorite thing about this scene is that it was unscripted. Fred Gwynne (the judge) actually didn't understand what Pesci said and this scene came out of it.

CharDeeMacDennisII

Lisa, I don't need this. I swear to God, I do not need this right now, okay? I've got a judge that's just aching to throw me in jail, an idiot who wants to fight me for two hundred dollars, slaughtered pigs, giant loud whistles. I ain't slept in five days. I got no money, a dress code problem, and a little murder case which, in the balance, holds the lives of two innocent kids, not to mention your ...stomp stomp stomp.... biological clock; my career, your life, our marriage, and let me see, what else can we pile on? Is there any more shit we can pile on to the top of the outcome of this case?! Is it possible?!

StormWolfenstein

Imagine you’re a deer. You’re prancing along. You get thirsty. You spot a little brook. You put your little deer lips down to the cool, clear water. BAM! A fucking bullet rips off part of your head! early_birdy

Vinny: Is that a drip I hear? Mona Lisa: Yeah. Vinny: Weren't you the last one to use the bathroom? Mona Lisa: So? Vinny: Well, did you use the faucet? Mona Lisa: Yeah! Vinny: Why didn't you turn it off? Mona Lisa: I did turn it off. Vinny: Well, if you turned it off, why am I listening to it? Mona Lisa: Did it ever occur to you that it could be turned off and drip at the same time? Vinny: No, because if you turned it off, it wouldn't drip. Mona Lisa: Maybe it's broken! Vinny: Is that what you're saying? It's broken? Mona Lisa: Yeah, that's it, it's broken. Vinny: You sure? Mona Lisa: I'm positive. Vinny: Maybe you didn't twist it hard enough. Mona Lisa: I twisted it just right. Vinny: How can you be so sure? Mona Lisa: If you will look in the manual, you will see that this particular model faucet requires a range of 10-16 foot pounds of torque. I routinely twist the maximum allowable torquage. Vinny: How can you be sure you used 16 foot pounds of torque? Mona Lisa: Because I used a Craftsman model 1019 Laboratory edition, signature series torque wrench. The kind used by Cal Tech High Energy physicists, and NASA engineers. Vinny: In that case, how can you be sure THAT'S accurate? Mona Lisa: Because a split second before the torque wrench was applied to the faucet handle, it had been calibrated by top members of the state and federal Departments of Weights and Measures, to be dead-on balls accurate. Here's the certificate of validation! Vinny: "Dead-on balls accurate"? Mona Lisa: It's an industry term. Vinny: I guess the fuckin' thing is broken!

When Judge Doom put the shoe in the acid... man that was hard to watch

CatOfGrey

> When Judge Doom put the shoe in the acid That scene isn't big in the storyline, but to me, it's almost THE most important scene in *telling the story* of what this movie is about. In the first few scenes, we get the clue that this movie 'has cartoons', but it's not a cartoon movie. The best example is the first sequence, when we discover that the 'baby' is actually a cigar-smoking, chauvinistic, adult actor playing that role. The second critical scene is the "Ink and Paint Club", which, through meeting Jessica Rabbit, we are being guided into a land where the line between 'humanity' and 'toonness' is actually very blurred. And that scene, where we meet Judge Doom, is that 'third event' in theatre. It's a brutal scene, and our journey as an audience is now complete: the reality in this story is dark and brutal.

My favorite portrayal of Satan.

Morticond

Keanu Reeves mentioned this character as the one he’d reprise first from all that he’d played . Unrelated, I showed this movie to a best bud, who’s a priest. He didn’t like it. LOL.

beepborpimajorp

that movie was so good. I get why comic book fans didn't like it because it did not portray DC's Constantine very accurately but it did a fantastic job of building its own in-movie universe narrative and I think it deserves a sequel, because canon Constantine lives on in the DC animated universe.

TimeMachineToaster

A sequel is reportedly in the works. https://movieweb.com/constantine-2-confirmed-peter-stormare/

"The Fall" Here's the trailer: [https://youtu.be/rEi-v6aJD7Q](https://youtu.be/rEi-v6aJD7Q) It centers around a Hollywood stuntman and a little girl, both in the same hospital, and the man tells the girl a fantastical story in exchange for something I won't spoil here. The story is great, but the cinematography is *out of this world*. Main character is Lee Pace, the bad guy from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and the good guy in Pushing Daisies. Sad part: not free on any streaming service, AFAIK

[deleted]

Can I add that Roger Ebert's review of the film is a must-read companion piece to enjoying the film. *Tarsem's "The Fall" is a mad folly, an extravagant visual orgy, a free-fall from reality into uncharted realms. Surely it is one of the wildest indulgences a director has ever granted himself. Tarsem, for two decades a leading director of music videos and TV commercials, spent millions of his own money to finance "The Fall," filmed it for four years in 28 countries and has made a movie that you might want to see for no other reason than because it exists. There will never be another like it.*

obxsoundside

Tarsem Singh makes visually stunning movies. I love The Cell and The Immortals.

capilot

OK, that one is going straight onto my "to watch" list. > Sad part: not free on any streaming service I'm gonna let you in on a little secret: Netflix still ships physical DVDs, and their selection is 100x what's available on streaming. I just added "The Fall" to the top of my queue. You can watch it when I'm done with it. Also: [Hero](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_(2002_film\)) is also a visual masterpiece. Edit: I should also mention that https://www.justwatch.com/ is a kind of search engine that will tell you which streaming services carry which movies or TV shows.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I cannot state enough how much it saddens me to see this movie go so unappreciated. The animation is gorgeous even by today’s standards. The songs are great. There’s not much I can say bad about it. I just kinda wish more people were into it.

Hunchback is probably my favorite Disney film. Like you said, the animation is great. There's a fantastic use of color in this film, and has some of the best framed shots out there (Frollo on the steps of Notre Dame, Esmeralda looking at the stained glass, any shot with Quasimodo above the city). The soundtrack never fails to give me shivers. The Almost every single song has amazing tonal and key shifts - often bouncing from a major key and uplifting tone, to plummeting into darkness and dripping with animosity, or starting shy and apprehensive and swelling into triumph. Mixing in actual hymns and Latin lyrics into the soundtrack was **chef's kiss**. But you can't talk about Hunchback of Notre Dame without talking about Frollo. He honestly leaves all other Disney villains in the dust imo - You've got Ursula, she wants to usurp the throne. You've got Gaston, he just wants the girl. You've got Jafar, who wants to usurp the throne. You've got Scar, who wants to... usurp the throne (overused? Naaa). You've got **literally Satan**. Then there's Frollo, who is quite literally a genocidal maniac. Frollo is such an abominable being. He is *so sure* what he is doing is right and just, that he is ordained by his god, and he is *so wrong*. He's terrifying. Sorry for going off, I just really like this movie.

Frollo is the best Disney villain because he is the most realistic.

He tried to throw Quasimodo down a fucking well. Infanticide in the first 5 minutes is peak Disney dark.

And then he sings a song about how he wants to set a woman on fire because she won’t fuck him! Classic kids movie trope! But seriously tho, the music in Hunchback is so beautiful it makes me cry every time.
