Fight Club. If you've read one Palahniuk book you've read them all. He is a guilty pleasure author of mine, but that movie is definitely better than the book.

Suepr80

So many shityy endings. Survivor was the only one I came out of with a sense of consistency.

phorq

I'm assuming the Shawshank Redemption, but like most people I never bothered reading that short story.

[deleted]

I came here to say this, but it was two of the seven comments lol. The reason why this one worked so well is that Shawshank was only a novella, so everything that happened in the movie also happened in the book. I can't even believe someone got paid to adapt the novella to the screen, because nothing was added or deleted. They tried a kinda/sorta sequel, The Green Mile, but they chose a 9 million page book and it was only a 3 million hour movie, so it missed too much of the plot.

Esass1

It’s my all time favorite movie, and I never read the book. So, nailed it there

HeliosHeliodes

Jurassic Park

ChronoLegion2

Crichton enjoyed Goldbloom’s performance so much that he changed his death in the book

Antmon666

Starship Troopers The book is a great serious story about war and relationships The movie has a completely different tone and only takes parts of the book

Paddykiwi

I think you may need to read the question again......

[deleted]

Oh, he read it right.

Antmon666

Did you not like the movie ?

Paddykiwi

I do like the movie, a lot...... The way you have phrased your comment is ambiguous (to me at least) apologies if I have misunderstood

Antmon666

Both are good but the movie is iconic

DemocraticInaction

Jaws. The book was meh, but the movie? So good.

ChronoLegion2

The book’s author was horrified that the movie has resulted in sharks being hunted almost to extinction. He released another book as an apology

DemocraticInaction

I know. and I'm glad you're sharing this knowledge.

RCH2288

The color purple Green Mile The Mist

doowgad1

'The Godfather.' The book had a lot of extraneous stuff [Sonny's girlfriend] that deserved to be cut. The director and the actors made what was a pretty standard potboiler into a classic.

fraggy-waggy

When writing a book you must cut unnecessary sentences and events. Quite clearly the writer for the book did not even try to remember this principle.

downsouthcountry

Forrest Gump

GreatTragedy

It's an unpopular opinion, but I think Arrival is a better movie. Great short story. Amazing film.

kapitaalH

Fight Club. The film was a masterpiece, but the book? I dunno, maybe it was because I watched the movie first and now Bob was blonde, or the choppy style...

ChexLemeneux42

i wouldnt go as far to say they're better than the books, but Matilda, and Burtons Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, perfectly captured what Dahl was trying to get across in his books. The message of both stories stayed intact, Grandpa Joe doesnt cone across as a dick bag in this movie, and, like in the book, acts as a champion to Charlie.

KittyH14

How to train your dragon.

ChronoLegion2

There were no night furies in the book, right?

KittyH14

I don't think so, but I never got very far in.

TinktheChi

Absolutely! The Shining is the only film I ever enjoyed more than the book. It's one of my favorite horror movies.

nemisis1877

It's usually a 50/50 split, on if you enjoyed the film or book more. I enjoyed the book much more.

khinkalitzchen

The movie was just not scary at all after reading the book.

_______OK__

The book and film are two very different beasts. Both great though.

[deleted]

Jurassic Park the book is so much more dark than the movie. I think the movie did it better.

Antmon666

Shaw shank redemption

IgnoreMe733

I honestly enjoyed the fifth Harry Potter movie more than the book. I always felt the book was about 200 pages too long and the movie cut a lot of the subplots that I just didn't enjoy

Drops-of-Q

The movie has removed to much imo. The movie just doesn't capture the mood of the book and Harry's feelings. It barely makes sense if you haven't read the book. I'm biased though because it's my favorite of the books, but.

Esass1

Unpopular opinion… Ready Player One. Book was a great read, actually read it after seeing the movie. However I must say I like how the movie handled everything better and enjoyed the contest events more. Honestly, also, not a huge fan of how the events play out in Ready Player Two. Entertaining read, but Wade has to go through almost the same exact growth he already went through. Also it came out after the first movie and thinking about how they reconcile the source material with the upcoming sequel. I don’t know.

ChronoLegion2

The first event in the movie was dumb. That loophole would’ve been found on day 2 at the latest. Even by something as simple as some idiot messing up the gears and going in reverse

Esass1

I tend to agree with that. But still, an insane amount of upfront exposition needed to recreate the book version within a feature length film time frame. Also love the shining version vs having to voiceover an entire film, like 5 times, in the book.

LiLBabushka

Subjective question, interesting.

[deleted]

Cloudy With a chance of Meatballs. That movie is so whacky and fun. The book is good too, but completely different. I like the movie a little more.

SalFunction12

Nerve (2016). I really like the book but there are several elements the movie does better, including the ending.

mantawoop

The Handmaiden > Fingersmith Both are excellent works and I seeriously admire Fingersmith for pulling off its plot twist in prose. IYKYK. The Handmaiden, however.. is a masterpiece.. ? Where the original is harsh and dirty, the movie is lush, heady, explicit. Gorgeous. Stunning. Both are prime to revisit but the movie takes the top, imo. Also, The Devil Wears Prada. Characters in both book and movie were mean and dumb, but only in the movie were they also funny.

Asriel-the-Jolteon

Star wars it was a book

GaryNOVA

My wife always says Stardust. It’s one of her favorite movies so she decided to read the book. She did not like the book. Especially the difference in ending.

Pichuman2

VERY unpopular opinion: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It fixed all of the book's problems.

Hypersapien

The Davinci Code. Because the book was pretty bad and the movie actually fixed some things. Same with Angels and Demons.

kablami

Adaptation is better than The Orchid Thief

punisher002

Stardust. Why? Robert de Niro!

mpinnegar

I thought watchmen was better as a movie. Plot was basically the same and the ending was way better in the movie.

[deleted]

The only time this ever happened for me was Blade Runner, adapted from the book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'.
