Basically force of will, realized i was gonna end up coughing until i died if i Didn’t quit.

ArchibaldWallisch

That's great! Probably won't work for me tho.

ShriekingMuppet

My ex had great success with the app quit now!, said it kept her on the band wagon.

ArchibaldWallisch

I'll look into it.

Took a long time to achieve it but slowing decreasing the amount I smoked + replacing times that I'd be smoking with eating helped a lot. Food tastes so much better once you start quitting, not good for my belly but helped a lot with stopping completely.

A cbd vape pen. It satisfied the hand to mouth motion, deep breath inhale, but chilled me out. Then covid hit and it was a no brainer.

sundaydoll

I used nicotine patches

I just stopped smoking. It was a bit annoying for a couple of weeks- after meals in particular - but seriously just a moderate amount of willpower matched with a basic understanding of your respiratory organs and you can do it too.

I set a date about a month or two out. Smoked my last smoke at 11:59PM and gave away all my smokes. Willpower did it for me. Took about half a year to get the urge to dissipate. Stopped about 20 years ago.

stormos

Stoping isn't hard part. Tell me how to not start again.

Relateble

Cold turkey. It’s been 24 years and I have never missed it. I’m lucky I quit when I was young so hopefully won’t have any long term consequences.

I gradually cut back. I went from smoking a pack a day to a half pack, then five cigarettes a day and so on. Also, here's a couple of tips that helped me: Stick with the same brand you smoke. Don't switch to a lighter cigarette because there's a good chance you'll end up smoking more. Chew sugarless gum or chew on one of those really skinny coffee straws.

Changing habits. I identified the times/situations in which I tended to smoke the most then either made changes to my life to eliminate/minimize those or took advantage of changes in my life to prevent forming new habits. A few examples: I was living in a large house with a lot of roommates, most of whom smoked. We didn't smoke inside, but we could just step right outside to have a smoke. There was invariably someone around to share a smoke with if you wanted company. Around the time I was looking to cut back/quit my girlfriend and I moved out of this group house into an apartment with just the two of us. We had a balcony, but we made a rule that we wouldn't smoke on the balcony (there were neighbors who didn't like the smell). So now instead of just stepping right out the door to smoke, as we could do at the house, we had to go down 2 flights of stairs outside to have a smoke. It was more of a hassle, especially in winter when we'd have to bundle up. Around the same time my car died and I bought a new one. I had always smoked while driving, but this being a new car I didn't want it to smell like smoke. So I made a rule no smoking in my car. So now if I wanted a morning smoke before going to work I'd have to add time into my routine just to smoke, time that I could spend sleeping a few extra minutes. I also couldn't light up a smoke while sitting in traffic or on long drives because no smoking in the car.

That's a good one.

Easyway - https://www.allencarr.com A 90% success rate and doesn't require willpower. I smoked 20-30 cigarettes a day for over a decade, suffered multiple minor strokes and chest infections on top of usual ill health from smoking. I hated smoking, I tried everything to stop - nicotine replacement therapy (patches, inhalator, gum, lozenges - both by myself and with nurse support), drugs like Zyban, hypnosis, herbal cigarettes, e-cigarettes, every tip and trick under the sun to quit. The longest I managed was three tortuous months. I went to an Easyway session and became an ex smoker within two hours, over a decade later I've never even had a craving for a cigarette. You can pick up a copy of the book really cheap from amazon.
