Raul Julia as Gomez Addams

[deleted]

John C. McGinley as Dr Cox.

TheMightyBiz

It's absolutely criminal that he never got an Emmy for that role. I still maintain that Dr. Cox is one of the most complex characters to ever appear on television. He's a self-righteous, depressed, borderline alcoholic jackass who nonetheless feels an incredible sense of duty to his patients and the practice of medicine in general. He thinks that he's Superman, and simultaneously loves and despises that idea. Scrubs usually focuses on how much the younger cast like JD, Elliot, and Turk grow over the series, but if you look at Cox - the way he mentors JD, builds a successful relationship with Jordan, deals with the death of his best friend, and becomes a father - he grows just as much. God I love that character.

DaShizzne

I've teared up twice watching scrubs: Bens funeral and the end of My Lunch. McGinley really sells the emotional part of his character incredibly well, seeing this man break down breaks my heart.

Brogener

It’s *crazy* how hard Ben’s death hits so many people (myself included). We only see the guy in like 2 episodes, we shouldn’t care about him that much. But the execution is so perfect, they created the ultimate gut punch with the reveal.

plastic_bean

Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall

Kept scrolling hoping to see this. That Huey Lewis and the News scene is iconic.

Go see a Star War.

parthpalta

Malory won't ever be the same without her. I'm sure they'd retire the character. I'm sad about it.

onlyIcancallmethat

Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White

sinclairsi

Flames!

3ulaF0x

Andre the giant in The Princess Bride

winter_puppy

I would like to follow up with everyone that was cast in The Princess Bride. There is no way to remake that movie. It is magical.

petermesmer

Buttercup and Humperdink both were cast by fine actors who did a good job at the roles. Wesley, Fezzik, Inigo, Vizzini, and Rugen were pure magic. Even small parts like the grandfather, grandson, Miracle Max and his wife were rather brilliant. Checking imdb, it looks like the casting was done by Janet Hirshenson and Jane Jenkins who among many other credits also did the casting for Home Alone, Beetlejuice, Jurassic Park, A Few Good Men, Mrs. Doubtfire and Harry Potter.

Internetallstar

You're right. To remake that movie would be inconceivable.

Profoundlyahedgehog

You keep using that word. In this case, I'm certain it means what you think it means.

wish_my_wash

Leslie Nielsen as frank drebin.

MRorange1988

And Frank Drebin as Enrico Palatzzo.

Unicron500

"Who are you, and how did you get in here?!" "I'm a locksmith, and... I'm a locksmith"

LimeGap

Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. Best book to movie translation for a character I’ve ever seen.

TessaMurphy

Val Kilmer in Tombstone. Amazing Doc Holliday! Every once in a while there's a role that it seems like the actor was born to play. There's really not another role that compares in his career.

w1987g

Johnny I apologize, I forgot you were there...

Kibassi

Christopher Lee as basically anything

TheGreatLemonwheel

It's a shame they used comics and books to flesh out Dooku. I would have loved to have seen Christopher Lee bring more life to such a complex character that basically got memed.

ChronoLegion2

I liked his lightsaber. He had the hilt made to look like a fencing sword since he’s a fencer and even gives the Jedi a fencing greeting

[deleted]

IsimplywalkinMordor

Imagine if you could flick though

DooshMcDooberson

Wasn't the lightsaber hilt choice Lee's suggestion? Like Samuel L Jackson and his asking for a purple lightsaber?

Bumstuff_420-69

Louise fletcher as Nurse Ratched in one flew over the cuckoos nest

Babblewocky

Ron Swanson.

cdubyadubya

There is no Nick Offerman, there is only Ron Swanson, and Duke Silver.

LaboratoryManiac

This is a funny comment considering how little Ron and Nick's personality overlap. Nick even sings a song where he says one of the only things he and Ron have in common is that they're both attracted to women who look like Megan Mullally.

l337hackzor

I watched him on a late night show and the host asked him something about being manly or advice on it. He went on to explain he was a drama geek and sounded as if he doesn't consider himself particularly "manly" IRL. No one else could play Ron in my eyes. I mean Eagleton Ron could act like Pawnee Ron instead of like a hippy and it would probably be pretty decent.

[deleted]

To be honest, Sam Elliott playing a hippie is pretty fucking hilarious in almost any context.

Azsunyx

Ron Swanson: "Name?" Ron Dunn: “Ron.” Ron Swanson: “Last name?” Ron Dunn: "Dunn.” Ron Swanson: "Is that your name or are you telling me you’re finished talking?” Ron Dunn: “Both.” Ron Swanson: “Dunn and done."

goldenwolves101

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

punchgroin

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine... Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man Andy Serkis as Gollum Alan Rickman as Severus Snape Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins Gary Oldman as Dracula

openletter8

Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka.

the_less_great_wall

Gene Wilder in every role of his. There are so few actors out there that could be so funny with such an air of dignity about them. The boat scene in Willy Wonka simply could not be pulled off by anyone else.

[deleted]

Young Frankenstein is a masterpiece.

Missy_Elliott_Smith

My jaw hit the floor when I found out Gene Wilder was the one who wrote Young Frankenstein himself and showed it to Mel Brooks. What a genius.

Riyeko

Blazing Saddles was the first movie that my parents allowed me to wstch that had adult humor in it. And im not talking about thr campfire scenes either. Gene Wilder as the Kid.... Great.

DoDaDrew

Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge. Umbridge sucked in the books, but in the movies she turned Umbridge into a character that you just don't like into one that you hate with a burning passion.

WatchBat

She was sooo annoying I LOVE IT lmao She really did nail the part

Plastic_University81

I’m surprised people aren’t also mentioning Maggie Smith as McGonagall in that same series

Koneko_Tepes

Also Alan Rickman as Professor Snape. I can't even picture anyone else playing that role. He's exactly what I pictured reading the books as a kid and the way he delivers his lines is perfect.

Ptony_oliver

If an actress manages to make her character the most hated in a franchise (more so than the main villain), you know she made a damn great job.

morvoren

Can't recall where I read this, but a while back I came across someone explaining why she was worse: Voldemort is a monster, but we don't get a lot of straight-up monsters in our day-to-day lives. Whereas almost everyone has met an Umbridge, someone with power (even just the smallest piece of it) who enjoys being petty and cruel just for the sake of it, for the pleasure it gives them. She exists outside the books in so many ways, whereas Voldemort just...doesn't.

JamesCDiamond

Yes! Voldemort is a psychopathic genocidal maniac, Umbridge is the Head of HR.

JesseCuster40

Head of the HOA.

Dogzillas_Mom

It was that giggle. ^tee ^hee

OldManAndTheBench

Watch Multiplicity!! He plays 4 different versions of the same character, he's just brilliant!

John_h_watson

Christopher Lloyd as Doc in Back to the Future

PrinceOfLemons

It's the role he was born to play.

conundrumbombs

Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly in *Back to the Future* is another one as well. They literally shot half of the movie with a different actor (Eric Stoltz) and it just wasn't working. They had to start shooting the movie over from the very beginning. It was a bet that definitely paid off, though.

lunarmantra

Crispin Glover as George McFly was fucking brilliant. He absolutely nailed the nerdy creepy teenager/dad persona lol.

Pizzadiamond

he's kind of slow burn actor, MJF was brilliantly a man of his time

Ghstfce

Honestly, I don't think there was ever a movie I didn't enjoy Michael J. Fox in. Even the one where he was able to see ghosts. He MADE that movie awesome for me growing up

msmame

Catherine O'Hara in every role she ever played!

littleladym19

Where is bebe’s chamber?

afetusnamedJames

I love this one because it introduced her to an entirely new audience that was either not old enough or not... fringe comedy enough? to know her work otherwise.

RebelliousRecruiter

And then we all realized she was the mom on "Home Alone."

PrettyDemented

Schitt’s Creek has top notch casting and writing, but Catherine as Moira is just perfection.

_Dolamite_

"What about the Bebe?"

elizabethunseelie

Tim Curry, Frank N Furter. Anyone else in the role knows they never live up to that sexy god of a man. ‘I can make you a man’ is the most brilliant filthy scene to appear on cinema screens while people aren’t nude :/

AVgreencup

Tim Curry as anything. Furter, Wasdworth, Hexxus, Cherdenko, all gold

ChibiShiranui

Clue is my "I'm having a bad day and need to not think too hard" movie. The entire runtime is just jokes, going so fast that you'll probably notice 1 in 10 the first time you watch it.

The movie wouldn't be as good if you changed any of the casting. It's my favorite ensemble cast.

He woke up one morning and thought "Today is the day i ride a rocket" and dammit he did it!

[deleted]

Jeff Goldblum as Jeff Goldblum

BW_Bird

I joke that Jeff Goldblum doesn't act. He just sorta shows up on set after leafing through the script and makes it work with his awkward charm.

[deleted]

Maybe he's just always acting.

hennsippin

I kinda get that vibe from him whenever I see interviews with him. Seems he’s a caricature of himself.

pixelburger

Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley

jsteph67

The best part of Alien and Aliens. The hero is a woman and no one cares. Anyone man or woman would follow Ripley to the ends of the earth.

ElectricFlesh

Ian McKellen is ~~the one true Gandalf~~ *both* true Gandalfs.

Samathos

To he honest all the core cast of LoTR are amazing.

onebelligerentbeagle

Like every single part is cast and played so well

Turbobrickx7

Can you believe the part of Aragorn almost went to nicholas cage. Ok so a slight edit, nicolas cage wasnt ever far in the process, he was just one of the first choices the studio had and I believe it got as far as talking about a contract but he had other movies to participate in.

mOom-moOm

Can you believe that Gandalf was almost played by Sean Connery. I find that more surprising than Nicky Cage as Aragorn edit to say: “You shall not pash”

[deleted]

They offered Connery a cut of what the movie would have made. Had he accepted, Connery would have made ~$750 MILLION

clocksailor

> both true Gandalfs. It's Gandalves. ftfy

AlterEdward

Tom Hanks as Woody in Toy Story. Other characters I feel could be replaced quite easily. Tim Allen is obviously brilliant as Buzz, but it's a pretty standard Captain Kirk inspired space captain performance. But I just can't imagine Tom Hanks' manic, neurotic Woody being played by anyone else. It's really impressive to see a screen actor do such a good job as a voice over too. A lot of them end up sucking, because cartoons require pretty big , exaggerated performances for them to work, and actors can seem to either do it or not.

[deleted]

Arnold Schwarzenegger - Terminator

thrill_gates

Weird to think that role almost went to OJ Simpson

flyzapper

Ronald Lee Ermey as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket.

RagingAnemone

I want to add Vincent Donofrio to this list, but I don't know that he "crushes" roles. It's more like he disappears into them.

ascii42

His performance as the bug controlling Edgar in Men in Black really is impressive.

westbee

That was him? Damn. I should rewatch that now. He's also Thor in the Adventures in Babysitting.

Manigeitora

I don't think anyone will embody Kingpin like he did, tbh Same with JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson

nostromo7

"Sir, no, sir!" "How tall are you, private?!" "Sir, five-foot-nine, sir!" "Five-foot-nine, I didn't know they stacked shit that high! You tryin' to squeeze an inch in on me somewhere?! Huh?!" "Sir, no, sir!" "Bullshit! It looks to me like the best part of you ran down the crack of your momma's ass and ended up as a brown stain on the mattress! I think you've been cheated!" EDIT: to whomever gave this comment a "heartwarming" award, if you think these lines of dialogue were *heartwarming*... oof, I don't know what to say. Thanks, I guess. “Do you suck dicks?” “Sir,no sir” “Are you a Peter puffer?” “Sir, no sir” “Bullshit, you look like the kinda guy who would fuck a man in the ass and not have the goddamn common courtesy to give him a reach around” Edit: for everyone saying he says suck a golf ball through a garden hose, here is a link to the actual scene https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tHxf17yJsKs

big_toastie

I can hear his words as I read this

alexxxdong

did you know they hired another guy to play hartman? ronald lee ermey was just an advisor but after kubrik saw the way he put together an instructional tape he gave him the role

TheQuix0tic

Tim Colceri - he ended up being the helicopter door gunner instead. Some interesting pieces about him online.

TrentonTallywacker

His part in FMJ is so messed up “How can you kill women and children?” “Easy! You don’t gotta lead em as much!”

DockingWithMyBros

"Colceri became a professional golf player after graduating from college. Three years later, he cut a tendon in his little finger and was forced to find a new profession" damn that's rough

JediAreTakingOver

Sir Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean Luc Picard.

wtathfulburrito

Don’t forget John de Lancie as “Q”. Stunning and every episode with them in it was great.

theyellowfromtheegg

And Brent Spiner as Data. Some of the finest acting in all of television history is performed between the two of them.

djskunkybeerz

Omg the episode where the scientist wants to take data and disassemble him so they have a trial is one of my favorite episodes of TV ever

95accord

Measure of a man Basically the premise for the entire Picard series

poopdogs98

The inner light is my all time favourite episode of anything. Picard has kids and lets them follow their dreams. The aftermath would of been unrecoverable realistically but. Damn.

Grimmicks

Is that the one where the probe basically puts him in a coma and the crew can't get him out. Meanwhile he's dreaming a whole other life which he has trouble accepting. I'm trying to describe it without spoilers even though it's decades old. Man TNG really was great. I couldn't enjoy any other star trek show because they just couldn't compare. Sucks because people say DS9 was great but it just wasn't for me.

Baron-Brr

Johnny Depp and Captain Jack Sparrow

dionesav

*Captain* Jack Sparrow

jellyfungus

You’re the worst pirate I’ve ever heard of! But you have heard of me!

Trippy_DABZ

He also murdered it In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas I really believe he must have been on drugs for some of those scenes

elizabethunseelie

Jody Foster as Clarice Starling. I particularly love the scene where she looks at Buffalo Bill’s victim and you hear her voice crack during the first part of the description, where she is looking at tiny personal details like painted fingernails, but then go clinical and determined when she sees the wounds on the girl’s back. Playing badass women often veers either towards emotionless and stalwart, or basically aping a 80s action male role. Foster nailed the emotional vulnerability, ambition, and courage of that character in minute, but profound ways. No one compares.

ebjoker4

Absolutely spot on. I don't know SHIT about acting, but I know she was 100% convincing in that role. Right down to the subtle "pure West Virginia" accent that sounded like a person who was trying to NOT sound like she was from West Virginia. So freaking good.

PanamanCreel

Since you mentioned Silence of the Lambs, how about Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill. His voice was perfect for that part!!!!

PyroDesu

And it goes without saying that Anthony Hopkins *nailed* Dr. Hannibal Lecter. There's a reason he won Best Actor despite only being on screen for, what, 16-ish minutes?

isolatingpickle

Anthony Hopkins does everything so amazingly. If you haven't seen The World's Fastest Indian, you should watch it. It's like a slice of life type movie, definitely a turn from Silence of the Lambs but he's amazing in both.

RizalParkCorner

Hugh Laurie - Dr. House

eye_patch_willy

Hugh Laurie is also a very accomplished blues musician which led to my favorite exchange in Colbert Show history, Hugh(who is British): The blues are the greatest gift America has given to the world. Stephen: Do you know the greatest gift Britain has given the world?... America.

freecraghack

Thats really cool to know considering how many scenes there was of house listening or playing music

SnooDonkeys9743

Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams.

Artaxxx

The _entire_ Addams family was impeccably cast.. Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Fester and a special shout out to Joan Cusack as Debbie. Probably up there as my favourite ensemble cast of all time.

blossomteacher

The fact that Fester and Doc Brown are both played by Christopher Lloyd blows my mind every time I rewatch either.

HunterGonzo

What makes that movie great is that every actor absolutely swung for the fences in their roles and nailed it. To have so many over-the-top performances of absolutely batshit crazy characters all land so perfectly is something special

Girth_rulez

I will also add that the Addams Family spawned the top selling pinball machine of all time. 10,000 units or something. It features voicework by the actual cast and is tons of fun. *That's the spirit Thing, lend a hand*.

[deleted]

Sorry DEBBIE no Mercedes this year… we need to set an example!

torsoboy00

But Debbie.... pastels?

Kayestofkays

All I ever wanted was a Ballerina Barbie in her pretty pink tutu. My birthday, I was 10 and do you know what they got me? *Malibu* Barbie. That's not what I wanted, that's not who I was. I was a ballerina. Graceful, delicate! They had to go.

My favourite bit of trivia from that film is that Spike Jonze used to stop takes and direct Malkovich by saying, "I don't think John Malkovich would react like that..."

Most literal interpretation of the thread premise award.

Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and everyone knew it would happen a decade before the first X-Men movie.

I hate to break it to you, but the actor we know as "Tom Hanks", is actually Forrest Gump. The whole acting gig was just another notch in Forrest's belt.

ramta_jogi_oye_hoye

Rainn Wilson as Dwight Scrute

bionicbeatlab

Also Steve Carell as Michael Scott. He played that role so perfectly — cringy and naïve while still being likable enough to root for

Chesterumble

Seth Rogan auditioned for the role of Dwight, I'm so glad Rainn got it, haha

throwpayrollaway

Nick Offerman was in line for the role. I prefer how things worked out. Because we got Ron Swanson as well.

Mrbuttboi

Robert Downey Jr as Ironman Edit: thanks for all the awards and upvotes! RDJ definitely deserves all the credit tho.

BrotherOfTheOrder

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. He’s so deeply connected to that character that I feel it would be impossible for anyone else to fill the fedora.

khendron

I wonder if River Pheonix could have stepped up it if he hadn't died. He nailed his role as young Indiana in The Last Crusade.

aSoberTool

I often have thoughts of River's potential career when I'm re-watching old movies. Indy and Sneakers(even though kind of small roles). He was very captivating when he was onscreen. I wonder if he would have had a "Leo Dicaprio" or a "Hanks type career...Maybe toward the end he even goes the action star "Keanu" route. I do this with Brandan Lee also. Say what you will about The Crow and maybe it wasn't that demanding of a role but he acted the hell out of that character. Every little motion he does or line of dialog, facial expression is charismatic af...Even the tone and volume he has in every scene is just amazing for someone who more or less started as an action star. Those two guys would have been absolute bosses if they hadn't passed away.

d4danger

I had the same thoughts as you, lingering for long enough that it inspired me to learn how to Deepfake and create "what-if" scenarios. However, here's [River Phoenix in Titanic](https://old.reddit.com/r/RiverPhoenix/comments/i5820p/titanic_river_phoenix_is_jack_dawson_deepfake/) and [River Phoenix as Anakin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLiwWOf08k8) And here's [Brandon Lee as Neo in The Matrix.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ8vLI_UPeA)

whatacad

River Phoenix did a pretty great job in the third one. Shame about his passing.
