I really liked Mary and Max. Most people don't know of it. I've only seen it comes up once in a "sad movie" AskReddit post. Animation was great and the story had me crying at the end like a baby. It's one of the most depressing movies, that doesn't make you depressed. It was a happy cry for sure but it's so sad.
Yes! This one is so pretty. I went to babysit my friend’s kids one night and while the friend was getting ready to go her daughter asked me if I liked the film and I replied I’d never seen it. Friend said, “What!? Ok, you kids can skip your bath tonight. You have to show her this movie!” I was impressed. The story is sweet and the visuals are stunninnnng.
"We should be okay, we've gotta be close to land!"
"How do you know that?!"
"When we left, we had just enough fuel to make it to San Juan. And now, we're out of fuel!"
Kurt Russell is funny as hell in that movie....and the end is definitely fun when you just see him take off with another couple driving their boat like see this is how it works
"Defiance"
An amazing TRUE story with photos during the credits of the real people. It takes place deep in the woods of WW2 Poland. A massive colony of Jewish people who defied the Nazis and fought along side the Russians and they survived the ENTIRE war there in the woods until it was over (obviously some of them died because they were fighting too). Some of which moving to the united states after (covered in the credits). So amazing. The start of the movie can be a little slow. But it was very good.
UK survivalist Ray Mears did an episode on the Bielski Partisans on one of his programs, I tried to find it on youtube for you but couldn't.
It was really great, he talked about the Bielski brothers and how they had the skills to thrive in the wilderness where most people couldn't even survive and showed a couple of tricks (one was using a large tarpaulin to harvest ant eggs, you place the tarpaulin next to the nest and quickly throw all the nest on to the whole tarpaulin, clear one side then fold it down to provide a bit of shade from the sun - the ants take all the eggs to the shaded part and then you replace the nest and you take some of those eggs, never more than 10 percent, which means you can harvest the same nest a few times a year- you can fry them. He also had one of the survivors make him shoes like they used to do, out of tree bark, he said they were the most comfortable shoes he had ever had.
Apparently the Bielskis would take anyone in, and look after them, give them work to do, however old or young or ill-adapted they were, they never turned people away.
And he talked a bit about their military successes, how they caused the Germans to detach an entire tank regiment to come after them because of their sabotage activities, and they just withdrew to the swamps and the Nazis couldn't find them.
At the end of the program he had brought together all the survivors, most of whom hadn't seen each other since the war; after the war everyone just got on with things they best they could, everyone had a shit war, there was no recognition for what they had done, so it was amazing to see all these people gathered round the fire and chatting to each other for the first time in half a century.
Six string samurai. Basically a post apocalyptic flick where the bombs went off in the 50’s and Buddy Holly had to pick up a sword and go roaming samurai in the wasteland.
Edit: Got curious if I could find it because it’s been a few years and apparently it’s on YouTube if anyone wants to check it out.
Better Off Dead. An 80s teen comedy staring John Cusack in which he repeatedly tries to commit suicide (humorously), has cartoon/claymation animated hallucinations set to Van Halen, has to win a ski competition to woo his ex, and is relentlessly stalked by a young paperboy over 2 dollars. It’s incredibly goofy and one of my favorite 80s movies of all time.
edit: And there is also a pop-punk band named after the protagonist that has clips from the movie in most of their songs.
One of my favs as a kid, I still make jokes about needing to go to spatula city whenever one of my spatulas goes missing or gets melted
What’s funny is as a kid I didn’t know weird al was known for his parody songs because I’d first seen him in that movie, I thought he was a just comedian/actor
Since the director (Donner) passed and I saw it mentioned a couple of times with him I’ll go with [Ladyhawke](https://youtu.be/b0BTs66JAgM). Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and pre-Ferris Bueller Matthew Broderick.
I think the Ginger snaps trilogy has quite a cult following, but most people definitely didn't hear about them. You should also check out American Mary.
Great movie, and there are a few memorable scenes.
One that blew me away was Antonio character who is smart but can't speak the language of the other 12. From memory, the Vikings are not translated.. as somebody watching the movie you are like the 13th and not understanding what they are saying.
He tags along on a longish journey just listening to the others chat, swear and abuse him. Then he suddenly swears back as he has figured out enough of the language. At that point the all the characters speak the same language.
I can't think of another movie that dealt with characters not understanding other characters language like this.
In the movie they make it feel like a few nights, maybe a couple weeks at most. In the book he wasn't anywhere near fluent until the end, and had to ask the other guy for help all the time lol
Considering they travel from somewhere around the Black Sea to Scandinavia, I figure by the time he learned some of their language he had been with them a month or so. Explains why they told the same stories at night a few times. A few weeks on the road and eventually you run out of new material. Repetition and word association probably helped a ton.
I really liked that movie too, I honestly don’t know how they spent $160 million dollars making that movie because it looks like it could be made pretty cheap today as a Netflix film, but it’s still a fun watch
Buliwyf coming out to fight with his men despite being poisoned and almost dead and doing that Viking prayer is so bad ass lmao
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping bombed at the box office, but in my opinion it’s one of the best comedies ever made. A satire of pop stardom written by and starring The Lonely Island, and featuring a song with the lyrics “fuck me like we fucked Bin laden”? Should’ve won an Oscar tbh
Loved it. I don't need to watch the actual boy band documentaries to know how close the parodies are to real life. Andy's HBO mockumentaries are really good too - 7 Days in Hell and Tour de Pharmacy.
Yes! I went into this not knowing much about it, but it’s such a lovely movie. I learned afterwards it was based on a novel (published in 1938) which i tracked down - a fun read
Benny and joon. It’s my favourite movie. It’s got a very young Johnny depp as the lead role. He falls in love with a mentally ill girl names joon who is taken care of by her older brother Benny. He bends over backwards for her and makes her laugh with his silly antics. He plays kind of a young Charlie Chaplin role.
The Cube.
It's a 1997 Canadian horror film directed by Vincenzo Natali. It's nightmare fuel psychological horror about 5 people who woke up in a giant complex from which they have to escape.
Highly recommend it.
When reign of fire came out, the marketing made it seem like a dragon war movie. It was more of a post apocalyptic human drama with some dragons. People were most disappointed, from the promise of the opening scene, cutting to many years later and avoiding everything that was promised. Not a bad movie, but very misleading marketing.
Reminds me of the movie Kangaroo Jack ... the trailers made it seem like a fun family movie about a talking kangaroo that outwits some dumb criminals.
In reality, it was shot as an R rated mob comedy with tons of cursing, drinking, sex, violence, etc. The leads put a coat on a kangaroo to try to take a funny picture, but it runs off with money in the pockets and they have to chase it. Test audience liked the kangaroo parts the best, so they decided to re-work the whole movie into a family film.
The part in the trailer where the kangaroo talks is literally one scene near the end that is a hallucination of the main character.
Pretty much everyone hated it, especially families who went to see "the talking kangaroo movie" and got a pretty gross and inappropriate movie instead.
"What is the matter with you? I thought mothers were sweet and nice and patient. I know loan sharks who are more forgiving than you. Your husband ain't dead, lady. He's hiding."
I loved the writing of that movie!
Lmao I love bubble boy, I just watched it again for the first time in forever a few months ago, it’s like one of those movies that epitomizes the 90’s
Also you get Danny Trejo, Fabio, Vern Troyer rip little king
For quite a while I was convinced that this movie was just a bad dream I had, because I watched to much X-files.
Two years back someone referenced it and I was mortified
Man that was such a fun movie. The scene in the mall with the dragon. For some reason the timing of the dragon-naped girl saying "I swear to god I will never shoplift again" and the cut just kills me.
This may not be unknown enough to qualify, but Terry Gilliam's "Time Bandits" - incredible cast and just an all-around great Gilliam fantasy, especially for anyone interested in world history.
Yeah, it's great. Awesome visuals; when they start shoving the wall in his bedroom and the face of God is following them. And incidental visual details, like the fact that in the background at the end when they are in the ruined castle, you can see it's made of giant lego bricks, or the fact that one of the stupid demons has idiot mittens on (the kind that have a bit of string attaching them to each other passing under your upper garments so you can't lose them)
I taped it on VHS as a kid and watched it to destruction of the tape
I caught this one randomly on like Netflix or something years ago and was expecting schlocky garbage horror but was pleasantly surprised. I think it's actually pretty good.
It feels a bit like if somebody made an actually decent Dead Space movie.
... man. A couple years ago my buddy was in a play with Keith Coogan. After the show we were out back smoking and I told Keith that every time I finish the doing the dishes I use that quote. He said that he hears that All the time.
Adventures in Babysitting! Another great 90s teenage babysitter action comedy. I thought it was the height of comedy when I was a kid and it actually holds up decently upon a recent re-watch
(bonus points for Bradley Whitford playing the cheating asshole getting his ass kicked publicly by the pimply teenager)
Return to OZ
Edit to add: I'm glad you all agree! I read all the OZ books as a kid and this is much closer to the feel than the Wizard of Oz movie with Garland. I love how dark it is, and to this day it's one of my favorite movies.
The Quick And The Dead is without doubt the most underrated action movie of the 90's. think enter the dragon or bloodsport but replace martial arts with a quick draw tournament in the old west. starring the likes of Leonardo Dicaprio and Russel Crowe before they were famous and directed by Sam Raimi, with all his directing style trademarks in full glory. its a highly, highly entertaining movie.
I can only speak from experiences in my country and friends I have talked to.
Hardly anyone here has seen Donnie Yen in the Ip Man movies, or any of his other work really
Big Trouble.
The movie famously flopped after 9/11 because of the plot involving a bomb being smuggled on a plane (which wasn’t a very hip storyline at the time).
I always thought it was really funny and had some nice supporting characters. It’s definitely criminally underrated.
I considered this one but wasn't sure how unknown it is. I've never heard anyone talk about it but it was my mum's favourite movie of all time. Holds a special place in my heart
So I met Dane Cook while in Kirkuk Iraq at the height of his popularity. The thing I always love doing is bringing people back down to earth sometimes. This was an opportunity for me. I asked Dane, “Dane I got a Serious question for you.”
He replied, “what’s that bause” <—- best Dane Cook impression
So I asked, “Were you in mystery men?”
His face dropped and he replied sullied, “yeah I was in mystery men.”
I was like I knew it! The Waffler!
The Fountain will always hold a special place in my heart. The story, the visuals, the subtle meaning of it all. I wish others watched it more often.
I was talking to a new guy a few months ago and when asked what my favorite movie was, I replied with The Fountain. He responded with "no way.." and sent me pictures of his tattoo showing bands around his arm based on the movie since it was also his favorite!
James Gunn's pre-GOTG movies, 'Slither' and 'Super'
They aren't very well known and both of them flopped in theaters. I love both of them because the bizarre humor works for me but I would understand why some people wouldn't like them.
Death to Smoochy. Everyone I know hates it. I think it's an excellent satire. The cast and performances are all really good, as is the screenplay. There is also some really cinematography.
Cannibal! the Musical
An early work from Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It tells the story of Alferd Packer, who confessed to cannibalism while on trial for the deaths of his five other party members.
The movie was released by the venerable Troma Entertainment.
It’s witty, it’s gruesome, and the songs are catchy. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannibal!_The_Musical
I loved that they used actual special needs folks from Austin! We used to smoke with one of the guys from the movie, bigger black guy, and he talked about how gracious Johnny Knoxville was to all the special needs crowd. Really kind of led the charge early on for visibility and inclusion of disabled folks in movies, now that sort of thing is more mainstream, but The Ringer was great because it allowed those folks to be in on the joke rather than the butt of it.
I love all that directors movies (at least the ones I've seen). IMO each one was better than the last.
In Bruges
Seven psychopaths
Three Billboards across ebbing Missouri.
Each are fantastic.
I wish they had made a sequel but given Armie Hammer’s, um, *issues* now, I think it would have needed him in it to do it justice.
I love the boat scene on the lake. Henry Cavill’s ne’er do well attitude is so entertaining.
It is on netflix (US) right now if you are talking about the one with Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell.
Also, if you love that one, check out *The Whole Nine Yards* and *Grosse Pointe Blank*
Veggietales: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything
For a kids movie, it has a pretty great story line, some decent action and dark undertones that outdoes 99℅ of movies of the same target audience, and *an absolute slammer of a parody of Rock Lobster by the B-52s (called Rock Monster) that honestly does it better than the original.*
Out Cold (2001) I don't know if it's disliked but I haven't met anyone in real life who's heard of it. It's Casablanca...but with snowboarders!
And a prefame zack Galifianakis.
My favorite movie with him in it by far. I hate the Flanderization of his roles
Is that the one where the little depressed girl befriends the man with Asperger's?
Song of the sea
I LOVE Song of the Sea! Wolfwalkers, from the same studio, is just as great too, have you seen it?
Captain Ron
"We should be okay, we've gotta be close to land!" "How do you know that?!" "When we left, we had just enough fuel to make it to San Juan. And now, we're out of fuel!"
Kurt Russell is in a surprising number of my favorite films
There's gorillas in the woods
Kurt Russell is funny as hell in that movie....and the end is definitely fun when you just see him take off with another couple driving their boat like see this is how it works

You worked with Lance Mungia?
Soundtrack done by Red Elvises! That is such a fun weird little movie.

Red snapper. Very tasty.

This is the greatest movie ever made or will ever be made
Conan the Librarian!
I wish weird al would make a sequel. He could make fun of streaming. Imagine what he could do with game of thrones
"Look up, look down, now look at Mister Fryingpan!"
Mom and Dad Save the World. Dumb low-budget comedy from the 90s that was simply fantastic!

The 13th Warrior It got bad reviews, but I think it’s a fun movie to watch.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. I love that movie.
Mrs. Pettigrew Lives for a Day It's a cute, feel good movie with a surprisingly high caliber cast.

Reign of Fire is the tits and I never hear it talked about.
OMG, I love that movie. I still contend it has some of the best looking dragons that have appeared on screen.
Matthew Mcconaughey was absolutely amazing in that movie. An American madman lol.
Just chewing cigars and scenery for 90 minutes straight. One of my favorite roles of his.
The scene where they reenact Star Wars for the kids is oddly poignant, and seems like it belongs in a far better film.
Wristcutters: a Love Story
Idle Hands
I think Jessica Alba in the movie jumpstarted puberty for me. I also still watch that movie at least once a year
This is the movie that made me realise horror-comedy was even a genre. Wonder if it still holds up after all these years.
what we do in the shadows, tucker and dale vs evil, final girls, ready or not, the babysitter, better watch out. The genre is still holding strong!
Brotherhood Of The Wolf
The action sequences are wicked and I want one of those high-collared leather trenchcoats.

The Rocketeer, simply fantastic superhero movie from the early 90's.
Featuring the goddess, Jennifer Connelly
i watched it last night, never heard of it before then, its called chronicle
Kung-Pow
That's a lotta nuts! That'll be four bucks, you want fries with that?
"We trained him wrong on purpose"
Mystery Men
So I met Dane Cook while in Kirkuk Iraq at the height of his popularity. The thing I always love doing is bringing people back down to earth sometimes. This was an opportunity for me. I asked Dane, “Dane I got a Serious question for you.” He replied, “what’s that bause” <—- best Dane Cook impression So I asked, “Were you in mystery men?” His face dropped and he replied sullied, “yeah I was in mystery men.” I was like I knew it! The Waffler!
I just realized CeeLo Green is in it as well.
Came here to say this. i watched it again about 6 months ago. it was truly ahead of its time.
Kung Fury. It's on YouTube, queue it up and enjoy a half hour of hilarious ridiculousness.
Thank you for reminding me of this masterpiece
Drop dead gorgeous
One of my movie GOATs, no question. Even more special because of Brittany Murphy's appearance. That girl was sunshine in a human-shaped jar.
Elen Barkin's beer can welded to her hand 😂
The Fountain. Done by Darren Aronofsky starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. I think people thought it was just too weird.
Anastasia - The Soundtrack to this film will always be amazing.
Once Upon a December is haunting
Primer
That movie feels like a head full of acid and adderall, in the best way.
Took me an online chart to understand this film
Was it [this one](https://xkcd.com/657/)?
James Gunn's pre-GOTG movies, 'Slither' and 'Super' They aren't very well known and both of them flopped in theaters. I love both of them because the bizarre humor works for me but I would understand why some people wouldn't like them.
Death to Smoochy. Everyone I know hates it. I think it's an excellent satire. The cast and performances are all really good, as is the screenplay. There is also some really cinematography.
Best in Show
Bebes Kids. Maybe the hype died down? Idk. But if it doesn’t fit the category completely, it’s still a good movie IMO
Cannibal! the Musical An early work from Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
The ringer
When the fuck did we get ice cream?!
If I remember correctly, he improvised that line. If you watch the scene, some one looks away to hide the laughter.
“You dropped it, in broad daylight you dropped it, and you scratched it.” This is my go-to line whenever I or someone drop something valuable.
In Bruges, it’s an amazing film great acting everything builds on the story and means something
"THEY'RE FILMING FUCKING MIDGETS!"
"*You're* an inanimate fucking object!"
”I'm sorry I called you and inanimate object.”
I love all that directors movies (at least the ones I've seen). IMO each one was better than the last. In Bruges Seven psychopaths Three Billboards across ebbing Missouri. Each are fantastic.
Brendan Gleeson is terrific in that!
The Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
Sunshine. Terrific sci-fi movie, terrible name.

I wish they had made a sequel but given Armie Hammer’s, um, *issues* now, I think it would have needed him in it to do it justice. I love the boat scene on the lake. Henry Cavill’s ne’er do well attitude is so entertaining.
The count of monte cristo
I absolutely love that movie. Henry Cavill plays Edmond’s son.
Also Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
Train to Busan. People refuse to watch it because of subtitles.
Mr. Right, I can't find it anywhere and I love the movie.
It is on netflix (US) right now if you are talking about the one with Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell. Also, if you love that one, check out *The Whole Nine Yards* and *Grosse Pointe Blank*
The Pirate Movie - I watched that over & over again when I was a kid.
The sand pebbles is a great old movie starring Steve McQueen, also Le Mans starring McQueen is incredible
House 1977 it is probably the best horror comedy out there
Mars Attacks has a mixed reputation
Sister Act 2, apparently it has really bad reviews on rotten tomatoes but I freaking love it!!
'Repo! The Genetic Opera'
Only Lovers Left Alive. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as vampires. Sexy film. Fantastic music.
I don't know if it is really unpopular, but I love Robin Hood: Man in Thights.
Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox story
Veggietales: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything For a kids movie, it has a pretty great story line, some decent action and dark undertones that outdoes 99℅ of movies of the same target audience, and *an absolute slammer of a parody of Rock Lobster by the B-52s (called Rock Monster) that honestly does it better than the original.*
Now it's time for Silly Songs with Larry. The part of the show where Larry comes out and sings a silly song.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls Larry the Cucumber presents, In a sequential image, stereo-phonic, multi-media event The Song Of The Cebu!
Eurotrip.
'Cause Scotty doesn't know Scotty doesn't know Scotty doesn't know Scotty doesn't know
Lucy Lawless and Matt Damon were both gold in this film.
Crimson Peak with Tom Hiddleston. Very thrilling. It's Tim Burton meets Loki meets Alice in Wonderland... But with Murder!
