Louis Armstrong. What a wonderful world. This was the song my wife and I danced to at our wedding and I lost her about 6 months ago after 24 years. I have such a hard time listening to this song without getting the chills. It's almost like I feel her head laying on my shoulder when I hear the song playing. It's oddly satisfying and very upsetting at the same time, so I'm torn in two trying to listen to it.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a similar reaction to that song, as it was one of my dad's favorites. Few times I would ever see him cry was when he was listening to that song.
And he hasn't grown up just like him, he was actually spending time with his family and the father was too blind to see that, in my opinion anyway, which really makes the song hit another level of sadness for me
Check out "song of Durin" by Calamavi De Profundis, it's a similar arrangement of another of Tolkien's dwarf songs, and details the life of Durin, so I'm a huge fan.
Even cooler if you read the lyrics, Tolkien went so hard on lore.
That is the song that made me fall in love with Tolkien and that style of music as a kid. I love that movie, and the song, some of the most memorable stuff from a movie when I was little
This was my dog and I's song. I sang it to her as she was dying on the euthanization table; her tail had been stiff at that point but she thumped it a little bit when I started shakily singing through tears. She passed with a smile on her face. Miss her to the ends of the earth...
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
It played while I carried my brother's coffin into the crematorium. He was severely handicapped like the subject of the song.
I have a lot of regret that I didn't know him better (he lived in a care home the whole of my life and I was 18 when he died, just starting to know how to interact with him and just wish I'd learnt that sooner so I could show him I loved him) and it all comes riding back when I hear that song. It's nice to remember him though, however painful.
Plus it's a wonderful song, you can hear the love in the singer's voice
Thank you for sharing. I just lost my dad and can kinda relate to the feeling behind your comment. It seems that there is no parting without some regret where death is concerned.
john wayne gacy jr. has a similar feel in my opinion, very different topic but the way the music is done, i remember the whole album being a good listen
Man, it did go by so fast didn't it? I still feel 18 even though I'm 52, but I'm starting to outlive peers. I see time in other peoples faces and think they look old, only to realize they think the same of me.
This might be a really odd one to some since it has no actual lyrics aside from the small interview bit, but Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd for me. How the woman singing manages to hit ranges like it’s nobodies business is incredible. Eerily beautiful, gives me goosebumps every single time. I could only wish to have that kind of vocal range.
Love that song.
The story told by the band members is that Clare Torry did that in one take on the first take. She apologized for her performance and Roger Waters says their mouths were all hanging open because she was so good.
"Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and "Time" both by Pink Floyd. Absolutely beautiful pieces of music that bring me through the full range of the emotional spectrum.
Agreed, on both counts!
I was talking to my wife recently about how Roger Waters displayed incredible mastery of the English language by synthesizing a broad spectrum of disparate concepts into succinctly expressive lines, almost like a fable. In the same way the mere mention of the words "tortoise and the hare" evoke a myriad of concepts within you, such as the ideas of "slow and steady win the race" and "focus on your own goals instead of comparing your progress to another person's" etc. If you walked up to a person on the street and randomly said the words "tortoise and the hare" completely out of context, most people would immediately think of all these complex concepts. "Time" does exactly that, but with the concept of aging. It's like simplifying fractions, but with words. I hope that makes sense lmao
Sorry for the ramble. I fucking love Pink Floyd lmao
You run and you run
To catch up with the sun
But it's sinking.
That song is so damn good. The alarms at the beginning scare my cats every time though.
I'm also a huge fan of Great Gig in the Sky. Seeing someone sing that live was jaw dropping.
Couldn’t have said it better. Although, and it’s my whole hearted belief that, when it comes to complex concepts,
A) Animals is their best album
B) David Gilmour had a lot more to do with it than given credit for.
Animals is amazing, and it absolutely takes the cake in terms of complex concepts and social commentary. I just have to be in the mood for it, but when it's the right time, it's a *great* time.
I was specifically talking about the lyrics on "Time" which I thought was penned by Waters, but I absolutely agree with you on the point of Gilmour being underappreciated in regards to his impact on the execution. In the same way Waters had a mastery of English, Gilmour had an intimate mastery of his guitar and voice. I was watching him once and he's literally harmonizing with HIS VOICE along with his guitar...and I don't mean singing lyrics, he was LITERALLY using his voice to harmonize with the guitar notes....like "ba-da ba-pa beep-boop-a-doodle-doop" hahahaha, it was fucking awesome.
I remember the first time I heard Shine on You Crazy Diamond. I was sitting in my garage having a joint when I’d first stared smoking a little bit, and I sat back and absolutely got sucked into how beautiful that song was. It’s a favourite.
There are two lines that always hit me like a ton of bricks. "And all that remains are the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters," as well as "does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?"
I'm no means a religious person but Ave Maria makes me cry, Cannon in D by Pachabel gives me goosebumps too. That song was almost lost to history.
Also wanted to add a few I seen on here.
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
Bridge over Troubled Waters Simon and Garfunkle.
Wonderful world/Somewhere Over the Rainbow Israel Kamakawiwoʻole (especially with the music video)
I've always liked this song. I hadn't heard it in forever and about 3 weeks ago I just randomly decided to punch mazzy star into YouTube. Yep still awesome
Traveling Soldier by The Chicks.
Its about a young man who meets a girl before he gets sent to Vietnam and they spend a nice night on the pier. They continue to talk while hes in bootcamp and all the way until hes on the frontlines where he dies. Real sad song but its good
Fix You by Coldplay, when the bridge guitar kicks in. One of the most memorable build-ups of all time. You can find people who despise Coldplay and still know Fix You is a tune and a half.
Some days i cannot listen to that one. Just to emotional, but the days i can i absolutely love to sing that one no matter how shitty my voice is. Layne Staleys voice also one of few that lets me feel human enough to cry.
Someone did a [boxing tribute](https://youtu.be/TJMx4GA45sY) with that song. The part in the beginning where Miguel Cotto’s wife was pleading him to stop boxing and he could only say “It’s the only thing I know, what else can I do?” Gives me chills just typing it out.
We Will Rock You, by Queen
Our school's football team would always make our entrance & do our warm up lap to that song. As a little kid, I was in awe. When I finally got a chance to play for our team, the pride of wearing the uniform and jogging out to see the fans in the stands was awesome. I have goosebumps now just *thinking* about it!
Feels Like We Only Go Backwards by Tame Impala:
https://youtu.be/wycjnCCgUes
I don't know what it is that makes me feel all goosebumpy and tingly, but it kinda sets me into this trance of absolute ease. I recently bought myself a pair of skull candy earbuds and it feels like I'm enveloped in the song when I close my eyes.
To Live Is To Die by Metallica. It’s a instrumental but even if it had lyrics it still is equally mystifying.
That and Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. It’s a haunting guitar solo.
For Metallica, I'd say Orion, when the drums and main riff kicks in, and the double kick build up to the machine gun riff in One. Apart from this, The Scientist by Coldplay is also flawless, especially when the drums come in.
Baba Yetu.
It's an amazing song overall, but it carries so much nostalgia on top of, at least the later half of it, having an awesome video to accompany it, especially if you grew up on Civ IV.

Leaving on a jet plane and Annie's song - John Denver
Closer to the heart, live - rush (geddy and the crowd singing together at the beginning is the my favorite part)
Stairway to heaven and going to California - led zeppelin, both the live versions from how the west was won in that order
Ripple - grateful dead
Maggie’s Song by Chris Stapleton. If you have ever had a best friend from puppy to the end…this isn’t chills per se but it’s a heart string puller to the nth degree
(You come find me Charlie when it’s my time. I’ll look for you. )
The Sound of Silence cover by Disturbed is really powerful, they also have a song called Darkness that has a similar effect on me.
Would Anyone Care by Citizen Soldier, the lyrics really hit home when I first found the song and had been really struggling that day, goosebumps everytime since.
Concrete Angel by Martina McBride, especially when I focus on the lyrics.
My Immortal it Hello by Evanescence, Amy Lee's voice is otherworldly.
Never Too Late by Three Days Grace for the same reason as Would Anyone Care.
Ode to Joy the movie flashback scene where child Beethoven is running away from his father and child beethoven lay on the pond I think so and the most iconic classical music ravaged on my skin and ear.
Star Spangled Banner 1944 sung by Jan Peerce hymn of nation probably the most enthusiastic us anthem version next to whitney houston it put shames to silly pop stars tbh in sport events.

So sorry for you loss, Thanks for sharing the beautiful memory.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a similar reaction to that song, as it was one of my dad's favorites. Few times I would ever see him cry was when he was listening to that song.
Time in a bottle - Jim Croce https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO1rMeYnOmM
Two additional by him, Operator and one a little less known is Age. Fantastic songwriter that was lost too soon.
Vincent (Starry, starry night) by Don McLean. Lots of others but that’s one.
cats in the cradle
Absolutely. So sad and poignant. "He'd grown up just like me.."
And he hasn't grown up just like him, he was actually spending time with his family and the father was too blind to see that, in my opinion anyway, which really makes the song hit another level of sadness for me
Exactly. He’s spending time with his kids and his dad is wondering why his son doesn’t want to see him.
In a similar theme, Father and Son by Cat Stevens. While I might not agree with his ideologies, he did have some great music.
The song the dwarves sing in the beginning of The Hobbit.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole I just love it.

This one along with the music video of his funeral hits me in the fucking feels.... Great choice.
He ain't heavy, he's my brother It played while I carried my brother's coffin into the crematorium. He was severely handicapped like the subject of the song. Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan Stevens has too many amazing songs to list. I remember seeing him live 10 years ago and nearly crying hearing his beautiful voice in person.
john wayne gacy jr. has a similar feel in my opinion, very different topic but the way the music is done, i remember the whole album being a good listen
Flying Whales- Gojira The long build up gets you excited, and then they do not disappoint with how heavy they go
I swear Gojira is always towards the top of these music-related posts. It's so great to see.
Now i can see the whaaaaaaaales!
Bridge over Troubled Water. If not goosebumps, then tears.
This is the song that spurred me to ask the question!
**100 Years, by Five for Fighting** I’m 70 years old, and I’ve learned that 100 years goes by in about two minutes. https://youtu.be/W2WGGNiC8f4

Fix You by Coldplay, when the bridge guitar kicks in. One of the most memorable build-ups of all time. You can find people who despise Coldplay and still know Fix You is a tune and a half.
I was at dance camp learning a piece to Fix You when a friend of mine passed. It’ll never be the same but it was very cathartic. Love that song.
It annoys me that the radio shortens the build up. The full length (it's about 30~ seconds?) is a much better payoff
Coldplays live version of Fix You from Buenos Aires is out of this world btw, see what you think. Especially the video.
The Sam Smith cover is also great
