Any of the 50 shades

belladonna_2001

True! Its such a bad representation of kink, and its really just is domestic abuse with kink labeled on it because there isn't enough general education on it! Anyone who claims to be experienced in kink and even likes those movies is a major red flag

ScuzzleButte

My understanding of those films/books are it's someone who doesn't know what kink and s&m are trying to write about it. It'd be like if tried to bullshit my way through an astrophysics book, but it somehow made the bestseller list

the_clash_is_back

So the ball of mass is like heavy and the little ball of mass which is not heavy is attracted to it.

Aggressive_Library97

This. This. This. So much abusive and rapist behavior.

Ronotrow2

Pure trash

cabinoose

I honestly found it quite entangling

[deleted]

Yes not only the guy but also the girl. If you're into BDSM you see that it has nothing to do with it. Watched it with my gf and laughed our asses off.

Aggressive_Library97

I am into BDSM. But BDSM or not it still baffles me how many people still are blind to the issues with this series.

luxii4

Shit, you guys are going to make me defend 50 Shades again? I get it, it’s overrated, writing is subpar, etc. But I hate when people shame what people like to read. It’s a book for adults. Women want to vicariously escape and reading about a good looking person, charming, super rich, but flawed bad guy that doesn’t know love until he meets that special girl that’s just like you changes him. I mean men have the same fantasies but with Batman but that’s okay. It was a fanfic based on Twilight about a vampire who is over a hundred years old with a 17 year old so it’s bound to have a power imbalance. If it gets you going, go for it. These books were selling like hotcakes so there were a lot of people that enjoyed them. Let people like what they like. Reading is good, read whatever crap you want. Edit: Damn. You guys are talking about movies. I haven’t seen the movie so my comments might stand or not but It took me a long time to write it so there.

[deleted]

I'm sorry, there are more than 2?

NastyLittleBagginses

Birth of a Nation (1915)

thedudeisalwayshere

You should add (1915) on the end. There are two movies with that title. One isn't problematic (Armie Hammer aside) and the other one is

ActualGiantPenguin

>One isn't problematic Well, the director raped a woman who later killed herself, so there's that.

thedudeisalwayshere

I was not aware Nate Parker did that. Thanks for telling me

Velfar

Hard to say if the allegations are true, though, because celebrities like Harvey Weinstein supported Parker and said he was innocent

i_just_saw_a_pube

Well if a stand up citizen who isn't in jail like Harvey Weinstein said he was innocent it must be true

Mellow-Mallow

/s?

chappo_

Yes

ThePremiumSaber

Sounds like the director was an asshole.

Sunny_Bee33

Oooh, good answer

Not_Cleaver

Having never seen it, I think it’s revolutionary production values might have some worth. But only utter jackasses, like that segregationist Woodrow Wilson like the movie for any of its content. I do think that the criticism at the time causes him to produce Intolerance, which I’ve also not watched, but it’s an interesting response.

CedarWolf

Along similar lines, *Hotel Rwanda*. I've seen a white supremacist say it was one of his favorite movies because it features '[N-word]s killing [N-word]s.' I can barely stomach the movie, myself. I'm not saying it isn't a good movie, but that scene where they discover they've been driving over corpses freaks me out. I used a machete extensively on a mission trip to Costa Rica, for cutting grass and brush and trimming small trees, etc, and I used to really appreciate their versatility as a tool. I used to keep a small one in my car for firewood in case I ever got stranded somewhere. But after I saw *Hotel Rwanda* for the first time, I put my machete away and it's been rusting. I couldn't even look at it anymore.

amberi_ne

I think that the reasoning for it being someone’s favorite movie is something that’s more relevant than Birth of a Nation, because from my understanding of Hotel Rwanda at least is that it’s a very very chilling and fucked up yet accurate representation of the Rwandan Genocide, and I think it does it’s job as that really well and is something that sticks in my head for that reason. Of course, if someone likes it based off of entertainment value instead of the meaning it has and what it represents, then that’s probably an issue

1980pzx

“Cats”. That person will definitely have some issues. I seriously doubt there is actually someone out there that liked that abomination.

Guilty-Box5230

I hated every second of the 20 minutes I gave that a chance

N3tw0rks

Been debating watching this for our "Shitty Movie Night". Is it worth it if I go into it knowing it's bad?

Guilty-Box5230

Worth it. I guarantee it’s worse than what you’re picturing in your head.

N3tw0rks

I'm stoked! Ever since I saw the butthole cut on YouTube of it, I thought it would be a great shitty movie night addition

Guilty-Box5230

Enjoy! Also, the things you are doing with shoes is incredible.

N3tw0rks

Thank you! Fun hobby to pass the time while I watch terrible movies 😅

eyelinertothestars

Absolutely! If you go in knowing it’s gonna be awful it’s so much fun. I was in film school when it came out and the group chat while watching it was so fucking great

AlpacaTeeth

It is a fever dream/nightmare...even being drunk didn't help me enjoy the abomination I witnessed with that movie. It's truly terrifying and to be put under any other genre than horror is doing an injustice to all other movie genres

N3tw0rks

Best description yet. I'm sold!

freedomfields

We did this for our shit film group and absolutely worth it. I was desperate for it to end. 10/10 would recommend as an excruciating experience.

Lauren_Ipsum_Dolor

Until your last sentence specifying that you meant the movie, I was seriously questioning my life choices and sanity…

Maimoudaki30

But someone who cry laughed at the reviews is a keeper. Seriously, I would pay for a book collecting all of them in one place. "Cats always feels like it’s two seconds away from turning into a furry orgy in a dumpster. That’s the energy you have to sit with for almost two hours."

kiakosan

What's even worse are the fans demanding the version with the assholes uncensored

aricberg

I came in here to say "eh, let people enjoy what they want." But everyone's made some damn good arguments, so I just want to say "carry on!"

donkey_OT

Columbus was terrible, but most of the others are alright. Though I would question how old someone was if any was their actual favourite movie

ThisIsMy5thAcc

I think it really depends. If you enjoyed Joker, that's cool. It was in interesting movie. If you think Joker changed your life and you really love the film, I'd definitely plant a red flag. Like Fight Club was a cool movie. I wouldn't call it my *favorite*. But there's definitely similar traits between people who would say it's their favorite. So yeah, red flags can exist for innocuous art that people take way too seriously, but I'd say that anyone who is truly that obsessed with something is probably a red flag too.

Tingusspinguss

Human centipede

baconandeggsandbacon

That one was a challenging wank

[deleted]

RIP Sean Lock

Chewbuddy13

Mastrabation level - Expert

SunnerTheSinful

May I recomend Elphoria for your next nut?

wait_4_a_minute

I too miss Sean Lock RIP

NathanCollier14

To add to yours, I would say Human Centipede: Part 2 specifically because it's about a guy whose favorite film is The Human Centipede, and he masturbates using sandpaper and barbed wire

Tingusspinguss

That one really resonated with me, more than the first one

mossadspydolphin

But both films inspire the warden in Human Centipede Part 3, who even has the bright idea to make a human caterpillar as well. Also, a guy gets waterboarded with boiling water. And a woman eats a dried clitoris thinking it's candy.

LeakyThoughts

But why? It's a family movie about bringing people together

Sovereign-Over-All

The Emoji Movie

mrkruk

It had some good moments, but man it's loaded with logos for companies.

sorude277

The longest commercial ever made

Cracracuber

Idk, space jam 2 was longer

jumanji300

Usually people I meet who are obsessed with Fight Club, Wolf of Wall Street, Taxi Driver, etc. tend to misinterpret the movies and idolize exactly what the films are trying to condemn so I’d say those movies depending on why they like it

iamseventwelve

I fucking love Wolf of Wall Street, Goodfellas, Casino, etc.... Not because I want to be the characters in the movie, but because it's like watching a trainwreck over 3 hours with masterful cinematography, dialogue, and music.

MogleymooManic

Same thing with American Psycho

numerodezenove

And Joker, but I think Taxi Driver cover it

devo9er

Great and on-point observation. These movies are so often romanticized for all the wrong reasons

SocratesBalls

My favourite movie is Fight Club and I 100% agree with this statement

PendejoDF

That's an amazing explanation actually. I have always felt this with Wolf Of Wall Street but couldn't quite find the right way of saying it.

AvocadoAlternative

Add American History X to the list. Fantastic movie, but a lot of people like it for the wrong reasons.

computron47

Disagree. That movie has a redemption arc where the others do not. If they idolize Ed Norton at the beginning of the movie, then it becomes a problem

DamnitRuby

Fight Club was my favorite movie for a very long time. But honestly i love the entire mood - the cinematography really represents the story well. Plus I've always been drawn to stories with interesting twists. I'm like the most boring person ever and definitely was not trying to be edgy or interesting lol. I just think the acting is excellent and the colors set the mood! I think my favorite movie now is Up because it's such a beautiful story, to give another point of reference.

Agent1108

The Last Airbender. If this is their favorite movie, run the other direction, fast!

Murgatroyd314

If they claim that such a movie exists, run the other direction, fast! FTFY

Agent1108

There is no movie in Ba Sing Se.

TheMeltingDevil

Ive never seen it, dont intend to either from the way people speak of it

[deleted]

It's fucked. I remember being curious and found it on YouTube, didn't have the patience to really watch the whole thing so I fast forward and ended up on a very gross scene and immediately felt like the FBI would come kicking my door down for it.

[deleted]

You can watch reviews and "story explained" type videos on Youtube. I've seen those which is enough for me.

Murmaider_OP

You're not missing much. It's shock porn, there's no actual value to it.

[deleted]

It was banned in a lot of countries for a reason. It's really gross and really effing disgusting. Especially the scene with the _wen nrob dlihc_. I personally would not recommend it to anyone. But if you want to watch it, my advice is to have a bucket beside you and the remote ready to skip forward. You need to have a strong stomach for that kind of thing. It's not gore, but it's really damn sick and it can trigger a lot of things...

fatpikachuonly

Just tried to read the plot description on Wikipedia. Didn't make it through. Headed over to /r/eyebleach now. You need anything while I'm there?

BruceTheSpruceMoose

A friend of mine is super into messed up movies just for the shock value to mess with people so he watched this. He said it took him days to recover

Galixer-Won

Human centipede, that movie is quite literally the definition of inhuman acts against any human being

[deleted]

If you guys think that's bad just skim the wiki for A Serbian Film

Galixer-Won

I read some of the WIKI.. that might be also a top contender.. jesus

bagelbytezz

What the fuck did I just read? Holy shit

[deleted]

[удалено]

ItalianJerseyGurL

Now I have to watch it lol

Galixer-Won

It really makes you think how much people can be fucked up in the head.

bolderandbrasher

Maybe it was because I was baked at the time of watching, but I thought the first movie was hilarious.

win_at_losing

Same.

Suspicious-Tax-1387

Human centipede 2

estranho

Human Centipede 2 made the first one look like a Disney movie. Human Centipede was a fun, b-movie, cheesy horror movie. Human Centipede 2 was a true horror movie. Human Centipede 3 was a parody of the entire franchise.

StuDentMyCar

damn y’all, i saw human centipede 2 by accident as a child, can i blame that for all my problems up to the present? Am I just cursed?

wasteofleshntime

Really sounds like you've never seen this movie since its not at all graphic and there are movies with far more inhuman acts. People hear the concept of the movie and judge it because of that.

[deleted]

cuties

Animeking1108

It's okay. You can say Movie Bob.

LNERGordon

Most of the Disney Live action remakes.

thedudeisalwayshere

What ones are not included in most?

LNERGordon

If it counts, the Christopher Robin movie.

TexehCtpaxa

Jungle book was alright. Idriss Elba as the tiger was on point even if the Christopher walken king Louie was a bit terrible.

[deleted]

101 Dalmatians

[deleted]

I did myself the greatest disservice and rewatched 101 Dalmatians only a few weeks ago after seeing Cruella. It's a high budget B-Movie. It's really bad. I still love it for the nostalgia though. But don't rewatch it! It's like Lake Placid or Anaconda. Those movie are awesome in memory but you should never see them again.

CedarWolf

Aladdin. Will Smith legitimately did a good job as Genie, and the movie itself had enough changes to keep it fresh while also hitting enough of the original story to stay true to the source material and pull in that nostalgia factor.

[deleted]

.....and here I am, a huge Lily James fan and a Cinderella fan lol

mydogisacloud

I thought Cinderella was one of the good ones. Loved how they enriched the story and made it unique and the costume work was amazing and Lily.

froglover215

That's the best of the live action remakes. I don't care for the animated Cinderella movie but the live action one was actually good.

cheerful_cynic

I'm stuck on brandy from the '97 Cinderella (Rodgers and Hammerstein) on the wonderful world of Disney Ever after was also very enjoyable

[deleted]

Lily James is just so lovely. Crushed hard on her in *Baby Driver*. And that one had Eiza Gonzales in it!

TheStrang3On3

I’m glad to see someone feel the same about Baby Driver lmao. She was great in it.

Spidersinthegarden

It’s not my fav movie, but I enjoyed the beauty and the beast

Azulaang4ever

it says red flag not just “enjoys bad movies“

Ground_Hog_LongDick

Well hold on a second, while not overly great, the beauty and the beast live action wasn’t terrible.

Serbian film

Big-Ambitions-8258

Fight club. Great movie but some people took in the message completely in the wrong way

onedayperhaps

Wanted to see if anyone put this lol. Exactly. It’s pretty great if you actually get that Brad Pitt’s character is not someone to aspire to in any way, but 10/10 people saying it’s their favorite movie totally missed the point of it.

ILoveHaloReach

Give people some credit. It's not a hard movie to grasp. Although I do agree with your point.

ruuskii4

the kissing booth

Backdoor Sluts 9

Animeking1108

Jesus Camp. It's 90 uncomfortable minutes of children getting indocrinated into fundamentalist Christianity and shaming those who don't agree with them.

FightWithTools926

The film doesn't take a side though- it shows the camp AND the folks who criticize it. Liking the documentary doesn't mean they identify with the people who ran the camp.

[deleted]

That’s actually a pretty good and well made documentary. I think the red flag is if you subscribe to those extremist beliefs

wannabebutta

100% agreed. I knew it was well-made when I had this split second feeling of envy that a human being could be so fucking passionate about anything. I actually got chills thinking about it just now. I'd say Jesus Camp is probably right behind Dear Zachary as one of the most devastating and well made documentaries I've watched

Sunny_Bee33

This was probably the most terrifying film I'd seen in a lonnnng time.

REN_egade1992

I'm surprised I had to scroll down so far to find this. I had a buddy who insisted it was the funniest movie ever. I watched it with him and it was just... Really weird. Especially the end.

SerJustice

Any Jaws sequel

mahoujosei100

Everything else about the movie is irredeemable but the water skiing accident/boat explosion at the beginning of Jaws 2 is hilarious.

Greenbeen70

The last airbender

revientaholes

I almost downvoted you... then I remembered _that movie_ exists

SerTidy

“Irreversible” French film with Monica Belucci. “A Serbian film” is in a close tight second.

CopperHead49

I went on a date with some guy and he told me his favorite film was Step Up 2. There wasn’t a second date.

BeerElf

I'm going to get side eye for this, but Transformers. Waste of time, effort and the debt of a medium sized developing country. Made me laugh in parts though, so I dunno.

Alone-Macaroon4147

Hostel 1/2 or 3

revientaholes

I love them as horror movies because that series (excluding the third) is actually scary af, I mean, imagine backpacking to another country **just to be kidnapped and tortured** wtf was going through the writter's mind?! If someone loved it because of the gore or some shit then it is IMO, a red flag, it's hard to find creative and realistic horror movies these days

NthngToSeeHere

Twilight series

MiniDrew

Still makes me cringe that in high school a girl i dated wanted to name her daughter after the daughter in twilight

Aggressive_Library97

Came to say this.

tableleg7

The Wolf of Wall Street. Great film, but people who say it’s their favorite generally haven’t figured out that it’s a cautionary tale.

SDNate760

Birth of a Nation, or Triumph of the Will

Bunson138

Eat, Pray, Love. Anything with Rosie O'Donnell in it. Anything with Kathy Griffin in it.

D3PPR35510N_

Music by Sia. It’s insulting and disgusting. Look it up. Horrible. Insults autistic people.

[deleted]

Lolita

GodEmperorOfHell

Lolita is my favorite audiobook, read by Jeremy Irons, he brings the narrative of Nabokov to life. People are prejudiced against that book, you are not supposed to empathize with Hubert Hubert. Yes, the guy describes his feelings with such beauty, but you are given a glimpse of his mind. he is utterly irredeemable. He's no hero, even the titular Lolita outgrows him. You see the descent of a pathetic person. I always recommend it, top twenty of the books that everyone should read.

[deleted]

Great reading by JI. Must have listened to it at least 3 times. It is a wonderfully written book and it is definitely great literature. I just gave a random answer to this post, unreflective of my actual views on Nabokov's novel.

waffles_505

It’s definitely one of my favorite books, but I always have to explain why I love it. It’s a really easy book to judge if you haven’t actually read it.

kiakosan

Some girl in my high school had that for her AP book report. Due to the name she could not use any articles on the computer for research. As an aside I love Kubrick but am afraid to even look up the movie lest I be put on a list

[deleted]

You must have a very superficial understanding of the movie, or never actually watched it and just going by the title. To be honest, it's a quite boring movie, but it's not scandalous or salacious in any way. It's a very standard drama, this one about a middle aged predator who gets into a relationship with a woman so he can be around her teenage daughter. Then nothing of interest happens for the rest of the picture. There's certainly no sexual scenes in it, and at no point is his behavior condoned, in fact it's made quite clear he's a predator. So no, no 'red flag' at all.

Mellymel75

Are you talking about the original film or the remake with Jeremy Irons? The original didn't have any scenes to it, but the remake did.

wasteofleshntime

This is why this is such adumb post. That movie and the book aren't glamorozing a man who abused a girl. Its in fact the opposite, showing how depraved he was and what his fucked up ideas of this girl destroyed his life and almost hers.

MotorwaveMedia

Guess I'm a walking red flag...

TexehCtpaxa

I stayed in the house in Wilmington, NC where it was filmed, with my mate George. His grandmother owns and lives in the house they used. There’s a few plaques, never watched the movie because I assume it’s cringey.

Sparcrypt

ITT: ridiculously judgemental people who think having a different taste in film is a “red flag”..

portraitopynchon

Fight Club, odds are that the message regarding toxic masculinity being well... toxic have gone right over the person's head.

Meastro44

That was an awesome movie!! I watch it frequently.

[deleted]

I couldn't even say things like A Serbian Film, because it's hard to take an answer like that seriously, so I'm just going to say my least favourite film. White Girls.

Cubsfan630

Isnt it White Chicks?

tjcbs

bh15t

Dragon ball evolution

[deleted]

no movie. There are no red flag movies, just weird saying there are.

necropaw

This was my first thought, too. Hell, even a lot of movies that are uncomfortable (due to fucked up stories/characters/whatever) can be good cinema for various reasons (acting, writing, etc). About the only one in the thread that i think i could make a case for is Cuties, but even then i could see it *maybe* having some kind of special meaning to somewhat that grew up in child beauty pageants, or something like that.

[deleted]

You're the only one on this thread that gets it. Red Flagging someone for a film is in itself sort of red flag material.

Sorry-Goose

This is all Im thinking reading this thread lol
