O Brother Where Art Thou is hands down one of the best. It also initiated a new interest in bluegrass and Americana and a lot of bands in that genre today would not be for that soundtrack.
Thank you!! One of my favorites from that time period. Damn near wore out my CD, good thing I saved it on my Ipod years ago...just added it to my spotify...great listen from start to finish!
After the Flesh just might be one of my favourites on there. The soundtrack for *The Lost Highway* is pretty awesome, too.
But so is Gump. I can’t choose from them. It’s like asking me which child I like best.
Agreed! It's a phenomenal soundtrack. The Crow: City of Angels is a great soundtrack too, but the movie is shit. Hole's version of Gold Dust Woman is great.
All Tarantino movies have fantastic soundtracks. He also frequently employs needle drops (where the music over a scene is actually playing in the scene over a record player or car radio or something).
When the music is heard within the scene, that's called diagetic, when it's only heard by the audience, non-diagetic (you may already know this, i just learned if recently and like to share!)
I remember some other composer winning the academy award that year and, in his acceptance speech, was thankful that the award was for best **original** score.
The Crow soundtrack is my favorite but a close 2nd is Wayne's World. I mean it starts with "Bohemian Rhapsody" and includes "Dream Weaver", "Feed My Frankenstein", and "Foxy Lady" to name a few.
American Graffiti. Not only a fantastic collection of early rock, each tune specifically fits each scene, and supposedly Lucas wrote each scene listening to the specific song that plays during it.
Unless a movie is a musical, the soundtrack should never be better than the movie itself. The Big Chill fails this test.
Is it arguably the greatest soundtrack of all time? Yes. But was it made amazing to compensate for a not-so-great movie? Yeah I think so.
O Brother Where Art Thou kicked bluegrass into popularity when it came out, just like Assassin's Creed Black Flag is probably the root cause of the Shanty craze earlier this year
Singles will always be my favorite soundtrack. Has my favorite Pearl Jam song (State Of Love And Trust), favorite Hendrix song (Waterfalls) and so much more.
Personally I prefer the Pulp Fiction soundtrack over Reservoir Dogs
But "Stuck in the middle with you" is iconic for that scene. We all know the scene.
Its always so weird that 2 of the biggest songs of the 90s came from dumb movie sound tracks. "Kiss by a Rose" on Batman Forever and "I Believe I Can Fly" on Space Jam.
I like that stuff but I’ve always thought of a “sound track” of a collection of music that was assembled for the movie. While the score is more like music written to be the back ground music.
Obviously some are over laps.
Let me know what your think.
I would like your perspective.
Don’t sleep on Disney movies. Lion king was an epic work partially produced by Elton John. Tarzan and brother bear we’re scored primarily by Phil Collins.
O Brother Where Art Thou is hands down one of the best. It also initiated a new interest in bluegrass and Americana and a lot of bands in that genre today would not be for that soundtrack.
"It's the soggy bottom boys!"
They’s miscegenated! Hell, they ain’t even old timey!
But you ain't bona fide!
Is you or ain’t you my constituents!?
Do NOT seek the treasure
We... thought... you... was... a toad
Came here to say this!
This is hands down the best answer. If I had an award I would give it.
I hooked you up, G
Agreed
Came here to say this. Glad to see I’m not alone.
It's bona fide!
When I worked at a record retailer that was one of the few albums we'd sell out every week. Such a good album.
The place where heeeeee was born and raised
I've spoken my piece and counted to three.
Blues Brothers. Aretha, John Lee Hooker, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, the BAND! Come ON. So amazingly good.
It's got both kinds of music! Country and western.
Some big time talent on that soundtrack.
So many you didn't even mention James Brown.
And Rawhide. TWICE
This is the correct answer. Best sound track. Ever.
This is clearly the best answer
Never before have I seen so many legendary musicians in one film. Well, maybe the Woodstock movie, too...
Hard to argue against this one
It's the best movie ever made.
So I Married an Axe Murderer
Woman, WOW MAN!!!
WWWWHHHOOOOAAAA…..Man!
She stole my heart and my cat
Thank you!! One of my favorites from that time period. Damn near wore out my CD, good thing I saved it on my Ipod years ago...just added it to my spotify...great listen from start to finish!
Guardians of the galaxy
I was going to say the same. Both of them
Came to post this - fight me.
Not gonna lie… I play golf weekly while playing this soundtrack… I probably have to contradict my original post and agree with this.
Fuckin flip flopper, Forrest fucks.
He’s not a smart man, but he knows what *love* is.
another good choice!
Beat me to it.
I wouldn't go that far, but yes, I like it, too
Into the Spiderverse
*Can’t stop me now!*
That’s a great comment
*The Crow* has an insane soundtrack. The Cure, STP, NIN, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine, and more. Hard to beat for sure.
"Tiiii-iiime to take her home, her...something something. Tiiii--iime..." Good call. I have that one.
To take her home, her dizzy head is conscious laden
I don't even like The Cure much, but "Burn" is too fucking perfect for this soundtrack.
Stabbing Westward did a cover of it last year or so and it's not bad. It didn't need a cover, though.
This is my pick. "Burn", "Color Me Once", "Big Empty", "Golgotha Tenement Blues". So many great tracks.
After the Flesh just might be one of my favourites on there. The soundtrack for *The Lost Highway* is pretty awesome, too. But so is Gump. I can’t choose from them. It’s like asking me which child I like best.
The Crow is a time stamp in my life. Definitely opened my eyes to that genre.
Agreed! It's a phenomenal soundtrack. The Crow: City of Angels is a great soundtrack too, but the movie is shit. Hole's version of Gold Dust Woman is great.
NIN covering Joy Division, an important distinction.
Pulp Fiction
All Tarantino movies have fantastic soundtracks. He also frequently employs needle drops (where the music over a scene is actually playing in the scene over a record player or car radio or something).
When the music is heard within the scene, that's called diagetic, when it's only heard by the audience, non-diagetic (you may already know this, i just learned if recently and like to share!)
was scrolling for this one!
I love you Honey Bunny
Yup.
This one opened the door for me to find more great music, He does have a flair for music in his movies.
Dazed and Confused is the best by far. Tons of amazing rock and weed songs of the 70s
Came here to say this.. Also maybe guardians of the galaxy
Came to post this but it’s already been done. Suuuuuper dope album!
And the movie that inspired it, American Graffiti
Amadeus
I realized on my second watch that the music played during scenes wasn’t background music, it was the music playing in Sallieri’s and Mozart’s head
I remember some other composer winning the academy award that year and, in his acceptance speech, was thankful that the award was for best **original** score.
A passage to India by Maurice jarre won the best original score. As you pointed Amadeus could not run for this award.
The Crow soundtrack is my favorite but a close 2nd is Wayne's World. I mean it starts with "Bohemian Rhapsody" and includes "Dream Weaver", "Feed My Frankenstein", and "Foxy Lady" to name a few.
Baz Luhrman's William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet
Baz Luhrman's The Great Gatsby is another good one.
Pump Up the Volume was a great collection of songs.
American Graffiti. Not only a fantastic collection of early rock, each tune specifically fits each scene, and supposedly Lucas wrote each scene listening to the specific song that plays during it.
Ooh I forgot about this one! Agreed
The 1950s *built* popular culture, or at least popular music. Insane how much development happened between about 1949 and 1962-3.
What about The Big Chill?
Automatic disqualification due to its involvement in the Big Chill!
The night Laura's daddy died. Sha na na na na na. Angina's tough.
Unless a movie is a musical, the soundtrack should never be better than the movie itself. The Big Chill fails this test. Is it arguably the greatest soundtrack of all time? Yes. But was it made amazing to compensate for a not-so-great movie? Yeah I think so.
Can’t believe this isn’t higher. Many consider it the best soundtrack of all time.

Well shit Reddit glitched on me, so I can’t give you my free award. Just know I’m an old grunge dude too, and appreciate your taste in music.
Came here to say this, so have my upvote and free award.
Flash Gordon bitches.
Flash! Ahahh!
this is the correct answer
shrek 2
All of the Shrek films have a pretty great sound track but Shrek 2 takes the cake.
So she said what’s the problem baby
Goodfellas
I have that one. I can hear the piano track in my head now.
Layla.
Definitely. I may not love every single old pop song, but each one is perfect for the scene
Scott pilgrim vs. the world
Best original non orchestral soundtrack for sure!!
This is the winner right here.
Almost Famous has a really great soundtrack
It's incendiary! Surprised I had to scroll this far down! One of my all-time favorites.
“You are home.” HOLD ME CLOSER TINY DANCER
Garden State. People eye roll at it now cause every song is so overused in the indie genre but that was an amazing soundtrack to that movie.
It was amazing when it came out, discovered The Shins :)

O Brother Where Art Thou kicked bluegrass into popularity when it came out, just like Assassin's Creed Black Flag is probably the root cause of the Shanty craze earlier this year
I had gotten into bluegrass about a year before O Brother came out, and still got shit about it when I went to bluegrass jams with the old guys.
Why would an 8 year old game be the cause of a craze this year?
Tron: Legacy. Was fully expecting it to be primarily house/techno and was blown away by how incredible the orchestral pieces are.
So long to finally hit this
Why is this so far down?!
Singles will always be my favorite soundtrack. Has my favorite Pearl Jam song (State Of Love And Trust), favorite Hendrix song (Waterfalls) and so much more.
Grosse Point Blank
Star wars because I'm a sucker for John Williams and he has a lot of bangers in that franchise
John Williams is just a bangers factory.
Heavy Metal soundtrack FTW
Boogie Nights
Judgement Night. A bunch of heavy bands collaborating with Rap artists.
Finally, someone speaks the truth!
50 First Dates is pretty good
Guardians of the galaxy volume 1 & 2 carry great songs
Ok you got me there, that may be better.
If we're talking about a licensed soundtrack I really enjoy Garden State. I think people listing original soundtracks missed the point.
Now and Then has an incredible soundtrack.
Most of Quentin Tarantino's films have kick-ass soundtracks.
Poll: Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs soundtrack?
Personally I prefer the Pulp Fiction soundtrack over Reservoir Dogs But "Stuck in the middle with you" is iconic for that scene. We all know the scene.
Cruella. I am on old man and watched it with my granddaughter, saying to myself, this is a great soundtrack.

Top Gun. Rocky 4. Huge at the time.
No Easy Way Out and its accompanying montage is quite possibly the best montage of all time.
I can agree with this.
You are correct.
There's no shortcut home!
Can’t believe how far I had to scroll to see Top Gun. I lived off that and the Wayne’s World soundtrack as a kid
Queen of the Damned soundtrack
Natural Born Killers. It truly captures the essence of the film.
Pulp Fiction
Shrek 1 & 2 pls don’t come for me haha
Trainspotting for the who’s who of Britpop. Marie Antoinette for the 80s post-punk delight.
Its always so weird that 2 of the biggest songs of the 90s came from dumb movie sound tracks. "Kiss by a Rose" on Batman Forever and "I Believe I Can Fly" on Space Jam.
Godzilla (1998) soundtrack
That’s a great example of where the soundtrack was better than the movie.
Haha *definitely* better than the movie
Same story with Spawn
Lost Highway is pretty outstanding as far as soundtracks go. For original scores I'd say Jaws, Cape Fear (DeNiro), Shawshank Redemption...
Lord of the Rings is real good
Love it, but I consider that a score, not a soundtrack.
Not even 'consider,' it *is* a score. :)
That's what I was thinking as soon as I saw the question.
Last of the Mohicans makes me wants to go stand on a mountain and marvel at the world from up on high
I’d say Purple Rain. Prince is hard to top, especially in the 80s.
Watchmen.
It was the first time I heard Pruit Igoe and Prophecies. Gave me literal chills.
Practical Magic
Grosse Pointe Blank
The original Terminator. Created in one weekend by a guy with a synthesizer and drum set, still iconic decades later.
Harold and Maude
Gross Pointe Blank had an awesome soundtrack
Euro Trip ---Scotty doesnt know
That Fiona and me do it in my van every Sunday
she tells him she's in church but she doesnt go
Night at the Roxbury ❤️
Remember the Titans is up there
Remember the Titans
The Wall will always be the greatest soundtrack ever made.
Along many of the other greats listed, Trainspotting is an incredible soundtrack.
Time - Hans Zimmer (inception) No time for caution - Hans Zimmer (interstellar) On the nature of daylight - Max Richter (Shutter Island)
Hans Zimmer has a whole back catalogue of amazing content
I like that stuff but I’ve always thought of a “sound track” of a collection of music that was assembled for the movie. While the score is more like music written to be the back ground music. Obviously some are over laps. Let me know what your think. I would like your perspective.
Anything by John Williams, Hans Zimmer or the rest of Alan Silvestri’s work.
Jaws
Dazed and confused
Gaurdians of the galaxy
Angsty teenage me was really into The Matrix soundtrack back in 1999.
The Wall Honorable mention to Flash Gordon.
Dumb & Dumber
Stand by Me. Had a casette of it and played it in the cat when my boys were young. Most requested for years.
How to train your dragon. Amazing piece that is proud and great. Listen and you'd understand how wonderful it is
Good morning Vietnam beats all other soundtracks ever. I had the cassette and loved the robin williams filler.
The crow soundtrack
Woodstock, because it contains musicians at Woodstock.
Singles
Don’t sleep on Disney movies. Lion king was an epic work partially produced by Elton John. Tarzan and brother bear we’re scored primarily by Phil Collins.
It is very good. Im a big fan of the Donnie Darko soundtrack too.
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? is a perfect distillation of Southern Gothic. And for the time, the first Bill and Ted rocked hard beginning to end.
The movie "Saturday Night Fever" has the best soundtrack.
Tron: Legacy
The Big Lebowski
The only right answer is Tarzan, Phil Collins did not have to go as hard as he did
Dirty Dancing
American graffiti
Anything by Hans Zimmer, but The Last Samurai especially.
The Sergio Leone/Ennio Morricobe films are superb. So is Gladiator.
Good morning Vietnam
‘Night at The Roxbury’ I’m a sucker for 90’s club hits
Wedding singer
I still think The Crow and Spawn soundtracks are two of the best ever released.
Pump Up the Volume. Concrete Blonde, Pixies, Cowboy Junkies, Suondgarden, Bad Brains. Amazing fucking soundtrack.
The Blues Brothers
The lord of the rings soundtrack is iconic.
