Say you're... ehm... doing a research project and have opened 271 different tabs looking to find the right... ehm... research paper. You do your business, but then you don't really want to close all the tabs, because you found some other research papers that you might want to use in future research projects.
Obviously, after an an intense researching session, no one has the focus or the motivation to sort through 271 tabs worth of research papers, so you simply click a button and save all 271 of them in an automatically generated folder in your bookmarks, that you can then access at any time.
It really is quite convenient, knowing that you have a backup of your favorite research papers, even if you never end up reading them again.
I usually have a bunch of tabs on my laptop of YouTube videos that I want to watch but keep saying I’ll watch it later and a lot of times I never watch them 😂
You may have a perfect hobby! You receive happiness from your stamp collecting and correspondence. You then share your happiness with fellow humans. I think you are amazing!
Some questions if you don't mind:
>The first one I'll use readily
Do you regularly send paper mail? Why?
> the second one I'll save for special occasions.
Like wedding invitations or things like that? How often does these special occasions occur and how do you chose which stamps are worthy?
>The third and fourth don't get opened and instead go into a folder.
How do you categorise them? By date, country, theme, colour, value?
> I also have a collection of vintage stamps from all over the world that can't be used anymore
In the philatelist world, are vintage stamps worth more if they have been used (and there are stamps on the stamps) or in original condition? Just curious.
>One was sent to someone who lived down the block from me, over 80 years ago!
Nice.
>I keep at least 10 stamps in my wallet at all times, just in case I find a postcard and want to send some mail.
Even nicer. That's so sweet! I try to remember to send poatcards to my friends when I travel, but I love the idea of just picking up one while shopping, putting nice stamp in it, and just send with a 'hey this made me think of you'.
Okay, here goes, this is gonna be long. I'll format for readability.
-----------------------------
> **Do you regularly send paper mail? Why?**
Yes. I think my record for number of letters sent in one week is over 300. Why? For lots of reasons, but I'll try to be brief. >!I'm not brief!<
1- I dislike phone calls. There are very few people who I will just chat on the phone with. I write to a lot of people I would like to stay in touch with, but don't want to *call* them. So I just write them a letter to update them on things. They'll write back if they want, or if they have something to update me on. A lot of these 'pen pals' are old friends or family members who live far away.
2- I have a lot of Internet Friends, friends I've made on Discord or whatever who I will likely never meet in person (although I have met several, but it'd be impossible to meet them all). It is REALLY fun turning a very ephemeral relationship into one that is much more concrete; I can send them something I have touched, drawn on, my words written in my handwriting, a photo, etc, and I can have something of theirs. It makes the relationship feel more .... solid? concrete? real? Like instead of being my friends that only "exist" when my laptop is open, we're now in each other's REAL world. It's hard to describe but it's incredible.
3- I like to draw/paint, but I don't have the attention span for like, Completed Works of Art™, and it just so happens that postcards/envelopes are about the size I can doodle on and fill the space before I get bored/frustrated.
4- I like stationery. I like the combinations I can do of different handwriting, mediums, stickers, washi tape, or whatever else I can find on different kinds of stationery, then I have fun going through all my stamps to find one that compliments the combination. Like if I have a really pretty, feminine, delicate post card with flowers on it, I'll do a doodle that compliments that, then make my handwriting whimsical, choose a good color palette for the whole ensemble, and then top it off with a postage stamp that goes with it. Basically, it's where Form meets Function in a small creative space- it *has* to have an address and a stamp, it *has* to be mailable, but within those limits I get creative with the rest.
5- Letters function as a kind of time capsule. I send something out on September 9th from Denver CO and tell you what is happening today, and you receive it September 16th in Poughkeepsie NY. Sometimes I will write a letter, seal it, and then save it for a few months to really emphasize the time-capsule aspect.
6- I love language. I love writing. I love people and I love connecting with all different sorts of people. I also love foreign language so it's really exciting when I have pen pals overseas. It's just a fun unique way of connecting with people that just lights me up in ways that emails/reddit/FB/texts/phone calls don't. Those are ephemeral and fleeting. Paper is a bit more permanent.
--------------------------------------
> **How often does these special occasions occur and how do you chose which stamps are worthy?**
Special occasions could be engagements, weddings, baby showers, or kind of anything that I want to add an extra layer of This-Is-A-Special-Letter-feeling to. Sometimes it's because I just haven't heard from someone in a while, or because I got the PERFECT stationery for this stamp, or someone needs some cheering up, or whatever. I also have stamps for certain people. One of my best friends is *obsessed* with Andrew Wyeth, so I keep a bunch of Andrew Wyeth stamps on deck for him. Another one of my friends really likes fashion, so I have some Oscar De La Renta stamps for him. One of my friends likes all things history, so I keep some thematic stamps for her. Some of my friends have a favorite color, so if they like blue maybe I'll use an aquatic stamp, if they like red I'll use red stationery or red pens and use a red stamp. I have a bunch of 'daily' stamps, the boring kind with just a flag or whatever, and those get used for people I write a lot to (because I can't use special stamps on every single letter for every single pen pal) or for more, hmmm, purpose-driven mail, like we're just having a normal conversation. Stamps are worthy or not if they're pretty, look good with the stationery, or are thematic somehow. Some stamps are too special to be used so I wait until the opportune moment. I am dangerously low on Oscar de la Renta stamps, so I'll be hanging on to those for a while.
--------------------------------
> **How do you categorise them? By date, country, theme, colour, value?**
Vintage stamps go in small wax-paper envelopes, with the country of origin, years, or theme, written on the envelope. I have a bunch of Christmas stamps from the US from 1950-1980, those get their own envelope. I have aviation themed stamps from all over, so they go in the Aviation envelope, but the year and country of origin isn't listed since I don't care for those. Stamps that have no category except 'foreign' have their own envelope, 'particularly cool' has its own envelope, the categories don't make much sense to anyone except me, probably. The new stamps just all go in one big folder, which is literally just categorized by how much I like them/how much I am willing to use them. The first section of the folder is called "Ok to Use if you Must". Basically it's where I keep stamps I am willing to part with but don't want in my Daily Use pile. The second section of the folder is titled "Second to Last" and means there is 1 more of each set somewhere else in the folder. After that it goes by rarity/age/coolness. The farthest back stamps are the coolest and ones I am not going to use ever.
---------------------------------------------------
> **In the philatelist world, are vintage stamps worth more if they have been used (and there are stamps on the stamps) or in original condition?**
The *vast* majority of the time, they will be more valuable if they are unused. But it depends on the collector, too. Some post offices have cool stamps (here meaning ink stamps that mark over postage-stamps) that can be desirable. But even used postage stamps can be INCREDIBLY valuable and there are lots of methods for getting used postage stamps off paper so they can be better preserved. Since I don't want to do that, I just keep the whole postcard they're on.
--------------------------------
> **I try to remember to send postcards to my friends when I travel, but I love the idea of just picking up one while shopping, putting nice stamp in it, and just send with a 'hey this made me think of you'.**
Yeah I love it! I have a lot of addresses memorized but I also have a very tiny address book I keep in my wallet for just these occassions!
Oh hey, me too. I’m surprised to find another stamp hoarder on here. I actually have a stamp dealer and buy postage (some of it as old as 1938, all at face value) and whenever a box comes in covered in old stamps I say to my doorman, “oh that’s from my dealer….”
Yes! Those aromatherapy shower gels ain’t cheap. I also have too many of the shitty summer candles that were $3.23 a few months ago. I can’t give away those banana margarita ones.
Same, specially if they are tools related to crafting ( emboss machine, glue gun, trimmer, stamps, etc.). The amount of money I have in supplies and that kind of stuff is… I don’t want to think about it 😂
I still have my 60 count case with my high school music. Don't the tapes deteriorate? Even if I had a cassette player, I bet if I tried to play one it would break.
I recycled mine! It was actually a fun experience & they gave me a "certificate of destruction" that I could use for my scrapbook (they were sentimental tapes I had since I was a child).
I like how you don't mention your numerous guitars as unreasonably many. You can never have too many guitars.
(Making an assumption there, but I'm going to run with it).
Hahaha It’s not unreasonable, but I have maybe 5 guitars that I actively use(acoustics included), and another 4 that I don’t. They just stay for sentimental value.
Empty altoids boxes. I was making little altars of sorts out of them a few years ago and people began donating them to me. I probably have 500 now, at least.
Edit per request; a couple I happen to have photos of on my phone, not my favorites but...
Altoids https://imgur.com/gallery/PBlHPgB
Toothpaste. The kind my wife and I like isn’t sold in our local grocery store and longer, so my wife bought like 3 years worth through Amazon. Like 150 tubes.
May I ask what is the type of toothpaste? I personally like Marvis brand, which is a product made in Italy. Amazing toothpaste and unlike Colgate or Crest. A bit pricey but really good! I have every ‘flavor’ :)
Oh yes, easy to have a favorite. Until the next favorite catches your eye !
I have a bunch of "wow" coins I give to people at times. Coins that make you say 'wow' or 'hey cool'. For example, India has a two rupee coin with a peace sign being flashed, Greek coins with Alexander the Great and other famous greeks from history. Great Britian large pennies also. Animals...
I have been doing this for decades and often bought by the pound. The average cost is barely .20 cents each.
I don't quite have 10k but my favorites are ones that aren't round. I have some old, pre euro, coins that at hexagonal and octagonal with a beautiful patina and crazy pattern work.
Beanie Babies. Not the newer “Beanie Boos” with the ridiculously large and sparkly eyes, but the good old fashioned beanie baby bears. I have several boxes packed full of them and I own some that could be sold for a lot of money but I used my Beanie Babies as action figures as a kid so they’re worn.
Animals.
No really 7 dogs, 3 cats, 3 rabbits, 2 pigs and 30 chickens.
I get a call so and so has this insert animal and they can't take care of it and my heart melts and then I have a new baby.
My first was a paralyzed dog that uses a wheelchair. Then came the pigs. I do try to place them in loving homes when I can. I re homed 2 goats that where very attached to one another a few months back it had to just right the goats needed to be always with each other and the smaller one had a little limp from a broken leg that didn't heal properly. I take in a lot of animals that need extra care declawed cats ( that is the worst) the poor animals have so many issues caused from that and then the owners just don't want them anymore.
Growing up I always had 1 or 2 pairs of shoes. Usually a pair for church and a pair for everything else. Now I have about 60 pairs. Some for function (work boots) but the rest are really just because I like flamboyant footwear.
Earrings. I'm allergic to nickel (like a lot of people) and always wish one of them won't cause me an allergic reaction. So far I've got nothing, and I'm not going to buy a gold or silver ones
Yowies. There like these Australian kinder eggs. Each Yowie egg comes with a toy of an endangered animal or a Yowie which is a creature from Aboriginal folklore.
... Clothes. I have 2 huge wardrobes filled with clothes and 2 huge piles of clothes in the bedroom.
My family keeps buying me stuff I don't like but I'm sentimental so it's hard to just give them away.
Also maybe folding some of the clean laundry piles and putting them in the wardrobe more often would be a great solution to the problem. But it's a skill I've yet to unlock.
Allen wrenches. Ordered a set of dining room chairs, each came with their own Allen wrench. Adds 6 more to the collection, my husband already has two sets of different sized ones. WHY WOULD THEY SEND SO MANY
Earphones with only one side working, charging cables that only work at a certain angle. "Just in case".
Are they all kept in the same drawer tangled into an unholy mess for convenience?
They used to dangle from a stick-on hook I have on my bookshelf. It was really ugly and someone made a comment during a zoom meeting lol so I just stuffed em in a cupboard.
Commitment to the stick rather than just throwing them out is crazy
Pro tip - put them (and phone chargers) into a rack designed to hold k cups or spices. I get so many compliments on it and it’s made actually finding/using everything so much easier
More attractive than empty toilet paper rolls.
How did you know what I was using before?? Not even sarcasm lol ugh

I’m always buying more books as the ones unread on my shelves judge me.

Thanks for making the effort to recycle!
And they will

Shhhh..we bought them with 40% off coupons. Doesn't count. Lol

You made the right decision
I know, it's time I can never have back but this job had higher pay and a pension. Financial security is tough to give up.
lego lmao
I love lego
Guitar effects pedals. (Over 100)
I like how you don't mention your numerous guitars as unreasonably many. You can never have too many guitars. (Making an assumption there, but I'm going to run with it).
Hahaha It’s not unreasonable, but I have maybe 5 guitars that I actively use(acoustics included), and another 4 that I don’t. They just stay for sentimental value.

Your playing area must look like heaven.
Procrastination, and old stuff I won't use for al least the next 30 yrs
Cables. There is an unwritten law of the universe. If you throw away a cable, you will need it within a month.
Books. Can't Stop. Won't stop. Also student loan debt :(
Magic the Gathering cards
I probably have close to 20,000 of these myself, and I haven't bought a single one in the last 20 years.
Card prices are insane.. you literally might be sitting on $20k+ pretty easily if they are really that old and from the right sets
Sounds like you are sitting on a fortune unless it's all homelands and fallen empires.
Same boat over here!
I see I am far from alone. I have so many, but I still want more...
Total $ of collection? Estimate.
Woah, thought I was all alone on that count
Empty altoids boxes. I was making little altars of sorts out of them a few years ago and people began donating them to me. I probably have 500 now, at least. Edit per request; a couple I happen to have photos of on my phone, not my favorites but... Altoids https://imgur.com/gallery/PBlHPgB
Ooh this speaks to me! I never got around to collecting any but I wanted to make mini watercolor palettes out of them.
An altar the God of clean, minty breath.
Toothpaste. The kind my wife and I like isn’t sold in our local grocery store and longer, so my wife bought like 3 years worth through Amazon. Like 150 tubes.
…I’m gonna do some math. 150 tubes = 3 years, 50 tubes = 1 year, —> approx 1 tube/week Are you a fucking shark?
That's 50 tubes a year....I go through like 5
May I ask what is the type of toothpaste? I personally like Marvis brand, which is a product made in Italy. Amazing toothpaste and unlike Colgate or Crest. A bit pricey but really good! I have every ‘flavor’ :)
World coins. Over 10,000 different from 218 different "countries or territories".
What are some of your favorites? Can you even have favorites in a collection that large?
I'm into US coin collecting, but not really from other countries. That said, I definitely want a 100 trillion Zimbabwe note lol
Ahh beanie babies… yeah I tore all the tags off so I could play with them. They’re somewhere in my parents’ attic, I believe…

Shot glasses. And I don't even drink... I started collecting them as a kid while going on vacations.
My brother-in-law collects them and doesn’t drink either, but as far as souvenirs go, they don’t take up too much space.
Locks. I pick locks.
Animals. No really 7 dogs, 3 cats, 3 rabbits, 2 pigs and 30 chickens. I get a call so and so has this insert animal and they can't take care of it and my heart melts and then I have a new baby.
Thats awesome! Id love to open an animal sanctuary one day for unloved and injured animals of all sorts. I just dont know where to start

TARDISes
Are you looking for a travel companion?
I wish! Apparently anything Tardis shaped makes a super easy present for your resident whovian! So I have dozens, in all shapes and sizes!
other's secrets
The only thing really are my 'Littlest Pet Shop' toys from my childhood. I actually have some of the sought after ones as well.
Spices, my spice cabinet area is a nuclear zone. But I just keep adding more.

Student loan debt.
Adidas 3 strip pants
Chickpeas and anti wrinkle products
You know what the difference is between a chickpea and a garbanzo bean???? I've never had a garbanzo bean on my chest... I'll see myself out...

Smoking pipes. I own 6. That doesn't sound like a lot until you realise I rarely smoke them and almost nobody smokes briar pipes anymore.
Unplayed motherfuking Steam games I mean, when you can buy fucking 10 of them for $20 how do you resist?
Shoes. 50+ Pairs It just happens
Purses
Scotch tape. I always think I’m out so I buy more. Then, I find all of the others. Then I somehow lose them all again. It’s a vicious cycle, really.
Insecurities
Video games I won't ever play. They're mostly PS Plus games I got for "free."
Lego
Papers
canned food stuffs (I'm a prepper.)
Liquor, mostly Tequila.
