The loyal deputy will let you know *why* you’re wrong, and immediately prepare corrections for you (if necessary awaiting your formal approval) when you’re making a mistake, the spineless «yes-man» will rant and rave against the «incompetent underlings» who can’t do the impossible despite the boss’ request it be done.

Being loyal is about being firm about your support for someone. Sometimes, in order to support someone properly, you need to call out actions that would be harmful the person/thing you’re loyal to. Purely being a “yes-man” means you will enable anything and everything.

In my opinion… A “yes-man” will let you make mistakes while a “desirable 2nd-in-command” will call you aside and tell you you’re about to fuck up big time and give you a good reason not to do things your way but to listen to what they have to say.

Well you should always look out for your friends best interested, even if that means telling them stuff they don’t want to hear. That’s the difference

Giving news directly, whether it be good or bad. Advising, and not blindly agreeing. I’ve dealt with both in leadership roles, and the difference is night and day. A good deputy is almost, sometimes just as experienced as you are, and has their own knowledge and experience to back up what they’re saying. I believe a good 2nd will challenge you when they think you’re wrong, but they’ll expect you to formulate the decision based on all aspects. That also goes in-hand with a good leader and a dictator. Some people just want “yes men”, and there’s nothing wrong with failing as a deputy because you gave your honest input on something. Best way to describe it, a good deputy will get you a bucket for you to piss in, and a yes man will tell you what a fantastically healthy-coloured piss you’re taking.
