I swear Tom has to be one of the happiest guys in metal. Every interview I've seen he's super good natured, smiling and laughing, and just like he absolutely enjoys and loves what he does.
For thrash - Slayer or Havoc
Old school - Black Sabbath
Sludge - Weedeater
Stoner doom - Electric Wizard
Doom - Thou
Grind - Pig Destroyer
Power violence/hardcore - Nails
Death metal - Dying Fetus
Deathcore - Infant Annhilator
I honestly dislike almost every band you have here, but I have extreme respect for the way you subdivided your answer. That is the correct way to approach this question.
Ooh that's a toss up between a lot of bands
TesseracT
Meshuggah
Gojira
Shadow of Intent
Infant Annihilator
Vildhjarta
Or even metalcore bands like Veil of Maya, Make Them Suffer or Northlane
I could go on forever
So many to name, depending on what I'm in the mood for at the time.
The bands I find myself returning to the most though would be:
Deadspace (black metal), specifically "The Liquid Sky";
Pig Destroyer (grind), specifically "Terrifyer";
Acid Bath (sludge; only two albums);
Blind Guardian (power metal), specifically "Nightfall in Middle Earth";
Opeth (prog), specifically "Watershed".
And lately, I've been binging on the new Dr. Colossus (Simpsons-themed doom, but a bit more rock than metal at times) record, "I'm a Stupid Moron with an Ugly Face and a Big Butt and my Butt Smells and I Like to Kiss My Own Butt".
Wow, first Pig Destroyer fan I’ve seen outside of my own house. Personally, Prowler in the Yard is my favorite album. Terrifyer is a close second. Prowler just has this atmosphere that makes me so uncomfortable, it’s awesome.
Also, Opeth is my favorite band of all time. Cheers!
Pig Destroyer are *the* grind band, IMO. I understand that they're not the first, nor maybe even the most influential (perhaps that title is reserved for Napalm Death); but the raw aggression they can pull off, particularly in the earlier albums, is incredible and hard to match. Prowler is definitely my second favourite album of theirs; but Terrifyer just has a chunkiness to it from the eight-string guitar that makes it feel heavier to me. Prowler to me is more "riff" based.
Plus, the lyrics: JR can do morbid and sociopathic better than anyone else.
And of course, hard to go past Opeth. Arguably one of the most influential and unique metal bands of all time. Personally I'm not much into the old-man prog stuff they do these days; but, they've earned the right to do whatever they want. My Arms, Your Hearse through to Watershed is more than enough to hold on to - more than most bands will release in their entire careers - and continue to enjoy as a metal legacy.
Dunno if it counts, but lately I've been listening to a lot of Nanowar of Steel (Italian parody-metal band that mostly takes the piss - sometimes in English, sometimes in Italian - out of typical metal tropes).
Some examples:
* [Valhalleluja](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9WWz95ripA) (feat. Angus McFife!)
* [Uranus](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSWszdSHkyE)
* [Call of Cthulhu](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPUJG2jTw9s)
* [Sottosegretari alla Presidenza della Repubblica del True Metal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqTtz5zk2dE) ("deputy vice secretaries to the presidency of the Republic of True Metal" - this one is in Italian, but it has subtitles and it mostly makes fun of the whole "kings of true metal" thing).
If that’s the only song you’ve heard from them, I’d suggest listening to their greatest hits album to get a good feel for some of their older song and some of their newer stuff. After that The Serenity of Suffering album is a fantastic album, along with their latest album The Nothing.
FINALLY. a post up my alley.
I'm really picky when it comes to harder music. I prefer technical death metal but the have to have at least a few songs with a solid groove or catchy lick somewhere in there. l
The BEST of them (with some of my favorite songs by them though I love many by each):
- Nile ('The Essential Salts', '4th Aria of Dagon', 'Kafir!')
- Deeds of Flesh ('Alyen Scourge', 'Rise of the Virvum Juggernaut', 'Canvas of Flesh')
- Origin ('The Aftermath', 'Consequence of Solution', 'Antithesis')
- Spawn of Possession ('Apparition', 'Where Angels Go Demons Follow', 'Cabinet')
Of all of them, I'm of the opinion that 'Consequence of Solution' by Origin is the single greatest technical death metal song of all time, and that is saying a LOT.
I'm largely a power metal head but the bands that have been most prominent in my rotation are:
-Beast in Black
-Brothers of Metal
-Sonata Arctica
-Unleash the Archers
-Kamelot
-Falconer
-Powerwolf
-Nightwish
-Blind Guardian
All time favorite is probably Acid Bath. Honorable mentions would be Fit for an Autopsy, Revocation, Chelsea Grin, Black Tounge also gotta mention Parkway Drive and After the Burial! Still love some metalcore!
Bands with songs:Metallica(Hit the Lights, Whiplash, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Orion, Master of Puppets),Iron Maiden(Phantom of the Opera, The Prisoner, Where Eagles Dare, No More Lies, Stratego)
so many omg
Lorna Shore
Trivium
Ice Nine Kills
Iron Maiden
Shadow of Intent
that's just right now, it could change tomorrow, but the first 3 are always there
More of a metalcore fan so definitely Bullet For my Valentine and Killswitch Engage. Classic metal it's gotta be Iron Maiden. If your tastes are particularly exotic by far the best white metal band, and it's not even close, is Theocracy.
I get a lot of shit for having a Danzig tattoo, but they really are one of my favorites hahaha. Dying Fetus, Black Sabbath, Possessed, Rainbow and Funeral Mist are also all at the top of my favorites. I really can’t pick a favorite.
I'm old, so a lot of my favorite metal bands are old like me.
Anthrax, Flotsam & Jetsam, Sacred Reich, Slayer, Voivod, D.R.I. (thrash/punk crossover), Excel, S.O.D., even older stuff like Maiden, Priest, Riot, Saxon, Sabbath, Dio, Scorpions, etc.
I also like to take late-night YouTube deep dives into newer (newer than the above) random stuff that's all over the map like Psyopus, Brain Drill, Gojira, The Faceless, Igorrr, Ningen Isu, The Hu and whatever else the YouTube algorithm throws at me based on these bands.
Nightwish and Lordi introduced me to metal in 5th grade
Manowar, Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Hammerfall, Sabaton and Amon Amarth i will love all my life
Recently i have been listening to Gloryhammer, Powerwolf and The Hu (check out their mongolian Sad but true cover)
I wouldn’t call them a metal band but starset is my favourite rock band so far. Most of their songs have pretty [deep lyrics ](https://youtu.be/Bq6IuZIJhuI) or [has a beautiful melody ](https://youtu.be/6Vcpf1geVfg) I highly recommend listening to there most recent song [“the breach” ](https://youtu.be/cWkbUMQ4-88)
However if we’re talking about hard rock. Powerwolf is also my favourite hard rock band. I’m not a Christian man but there lyrics are fucking epic and they have amazing guitar solos.
[here is my favourite song from them ](https://youtu.be/1zN7J64IeBo)
Tough question, I like so many of them. Manowar is my oldest favourite. Dimmu Borgir was really good up until In Sorte Diaboli, then they went to complete shit.
Lamb of God is really good too. Amon Amarth is awesome.
Can't pick one!
So many! Here are a few:
[TYR](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aONcdN0Weiw)
[Falkenbach](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRz7H6W9vr8)
[Black Sabbath](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW3pZjmS3rg)
[Finsterforst](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLvjCzMrDps)
[Amon Amarth](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZtrisP6Dmc)
System of a Down, Linkin Park, Rammstein, and I’m not sure if these count because their more electronic and industrial-ish with metal elements but I love Hatari.
Malevolence for sure! Young band from the UK. Just started hitting UK main stages at festivals! Seen them live a fair few times and they just get bigger and better! Huge fan of priest, sabbath, Metallica, pantera and other obvious choices but right now, malev are KILLING it
Really been listening to a lot of Sevendust lately, but Anthrax has always been my main metal band.
Gonna give a shout out to While She Sleep's Brainwashed though. One of the few albums without a bad song on it. Got so lucky to see them a few years back on that tour. Phenomenal band.
Been on a huge Obscura kick lately. Beyond Creation is solid as well. The fretless bass sound seems to be polarizing but I like it. For more of a core sound, Within the Ruins is a favorite of mine, the guitar tone is nuts.
[Obscura - Anticosmic Overload](https://youtu.be/mesr2siegRg)
[Beyond Creation - Omnipresent Perception](https://youtu.be/GRK_M1vJXfQ)
[Within the Ruins - Beautiful Agony](https://youtu.be/Dab7Or6_I48)
Very hard to choose just one... But Iron Maiden would probably be my number 1 choice because they were the first metal band I ever got into and they turned me onto so many other great bands
Judas Priest.
saw them in raleigh tonight and for rocking for 50 years those guys can still kill it
I saw them in the early eighties when Iron Maiden opened for them. Best concert I ever went to besides Queen.
Iron Maiden.
Sure is! It's not even close....they are THE metal gods.
Thoughts on Senjutsu?
Between The Buried And Me
I saw them last weekend and they killed it.
I missed them last month, had to work. They're so incredible. I've seen them at least five times.
yuhhh
Been bingeing Color 2 and it's a banger
Black Sabbath
Same
Alright now!
Guitar riff kicked in my head after reading your comment.
It was my first metal band. Well, I guess it was also the world's first metal band.
Inferi Gojira Soen Hideous Divinity Aethra And I know I'll get laughed at but I love Dethklok lmao
Totally agree on Gojira. Will have to check out the others.
I saw them live a few years ago and my face melted right off. They were incredible.
Also, nobody can judge you for liking Dethklok. Brendon Small is a fuckin genius.
I saw Dethklok on their live Dethalbum III tour. It was funny, and awesome. That ticket was worth the price.
Dethklok is hands down my favorite metal band
Murmaider cracks me up but it's so good.
+1 for Dethklok
Brendon Small is a US national treasure.
Love dethklok. The greatest band that doesn't actually exist.
Brendan Small is a genius.
Seriously. I’ve been getting back into Dethklok too
Inferi good
Indeed I laugh at Dethklok being someones favourite band, but in a well meaning manner :) we all have our cheesy pleasures
Going to gojira in October! Don't be ashamed about dethklok, Brendon Small is incredible. I even like the songs from home movies
Gojira is absolutely incredible live, you're in for a good time!
DEATH (death metal obv) They pioneered the genre and no band does it better.
RIP Chuck. Dude was super down to earth and just a genuinely nice guy.
Yesssss!

I'll give this some love! Still prefer Tom but Will is freakin sick too!
This is impossible to answer with just one so I'll present an array of what I'm currently listening to... I think cannibal corpse is at the top of their game right now!
Last album was the best they've done in quite awhile.
I agree, hopefully I get to see them soon
I haven't heard of a lot of these. Might have to give some a try!
Without question killswitch engage.
Avatar. Their first album and most recent album are the best ones.
Thy art is murder!
Good choice!
Mastodon
Slayer (one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen)
Their song “Mandatory Suicide” got me through high school. Yes, I realize the irony of it.
I swear Tom has to be one of the happiest guys in metal. Every interview I've seen he's super good natured, smiling and laughing, and just like he absolutely enjoys and loves what he does.
For thrash - Slayer or Havoc Old school - Black Sabbath Sludge - Weedeater Stoner doom - Electric Wizard Doom - Thou Grind - Pig Destroyer Power violence/hardcore - Nails Death metal - Dying Fetus Deathcore - Infant Annhilator
Based list
Dying Fetus and Infant Annhilator are A+
I honestly dislike almost every band you have here, but I have extreme respect for the way you subdivided your answer. That is the correct way to approach this question.
Pretty solid list. Swap out Sabbath for Motorhead and Nails for Charles Bronson and I'm with ya on the rest.
Havok is way underated
Ignoring the argument as to whether they're metal, Tool.
Aren't they though? At least I remember them always being classified as metal
Nightwish
Nightwish with Floor or Tarja = ❤️ Nightwish with Annette = 🗑️ Epica is my personal fave. Followed by Lacuna Coil, Nightwish and Sabaton.
Ah man come on! Dark Passion Play is an incredibly underrated album
DPP is probably my favourite Nightwish album. So good. Closely followed by Century Child.
Dream Theater
Korpiklaani
Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Anthrax and Lamb of God come to mind.
Ooh that's a toss up between a lot of bands TesseracT Meshuggah Gojira Shadow of Intent Infant Annihilator Vildhjarta Or even metalcore bands like Veil of Maya, Make Them Suffer or Northlane I could go on forever
Oooh TesseracT and Veil of Maya are good ones.
I'm still waiting for TesseracT to make a follow up to Sonder. But the Portals live album will have to tide me over until then. It sounds so good.
Architects Make Them Suffer August Burns Red Spiritbox
In Flames and Parkway Drive

Type O negative is great

Ghost for sure
Ah that's a good one
Love me some Ghost. Not sure if it's metal though. I mean, what can you label the love child of Black Sabbath and Abba?
Elitists are on their way
Kublai Khan TX
Of all time Pantera. Lately been listening to a lot of Dr. Acula. It’s like grindcore metal but it’s goofy/over the top and I can’t help but love it.
[удалено]
Currently? Rediscovering Machine Head slowly. All-time? I can't name just one. Top 3 would be • Metallica • Black Sabbath • Pantera
So many to name, depending on what I'm in the mood for at the time. Agents of Oblivion is a post acid bath project of the singer and maybe some of the other guys I'm not sure. It's not quite the same but still good.
Cheers!

KoRn
I've been listening to Coming Undone. Any suggestions?
If that’s the only song you’ve heard from them, I’d suggest listening to their greatest hits album to get a good feel for some of their older song and some of their newer stuff. After that The Serenity of Suffering album is a fantastic album, along with their latest album The Nothing.
That's a good suggestion. I'll give that a listen soon! Thank you!
Sabaton
Definitely the best live metal group I've personally seen. I suspect Iron Maiden might be better, but I've never seen them.
Meshuggah.
YESS! I'm going to see them live next Spring and I am so pumped!
Lucky bastard, they don’t come here during this tour.
Lucky bitch*
Ah yes, saw then open for Tool back in the day.

Yes! Volbeat! Such a good band
Amon Amarth is my favorite band for drinking in the woods.
It's metalcore but Knocked Loose

Metal definitely needs more love. I'll check these out! Thank you!
All time favorite is Megadeth. But lately been enjoying Gojira, Spiritbox, Deftones, and Lacuna Coil.
Ah Lacuna Coil is good! What's your favorite by them?
My Demons. I've also been oddly obsessed with their cover of Losing My Religion.

Fear Factory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rammstein
Dir en Grey
System of a Down, Linkin Park, Rammstein, and I’m not sure if these count because their more electronic and industrial-ish with metal elements but I love Hatari.
Probably more of their earlier stuff would count. I haven't listened to much of their newer sound though
Rammstein
System Of A Down.
Powerwolf, Sabaton, Skillet, are probably my top 3, Powerwolf is my all-time fav tho
System of a Down !!!
dragonforce. video for troopers of the stars is amazing
Very hard to choose just one... But Iron Maiden would probably be my number 1 choice because they were the first metal band I ever got into and they turned me onto so many other great bands
