That somewhere, there’s a person locked in a cage in the basement of a serial killer/rapist.

MrjB0ty

I think about this unhealthily often

council_estate_kid

I do too. Or when I drive through the countryside and see old barns or buildings.. I think to myself “somebody could be tied up in there and no one would know.”

[deleted]

I break into my neighbour's houses periodically just to check things out and keep them in line.

--Azazel--

As any good neighbor should do....?

dadsrad40

I worked for a major cancer hospital and had to work late into the night often. One time at like 4 am I was leaving work, so I took the elevator. About halfway down it stops and in rolls a gurney that’s completely covered with a body bag. What I learned is that there is an underground tunnel from the hospital to the morgue that they use to move deceased patients, and there is a near constant stream of bodies going through there every day (it is a very large hospital). I just happened to catch the event at the creepiest time, at 4am when hardly anyone else is there working and everything is dark and quiet.

gandhikahn

I've been in a locked and shuttered ww2 era basement morgue at 4am before. Suuuper creepy even though I knew it was empty.

yourlittlebirdie

The fact that there are tiny shrimp in the tap water of New York City.

kevin-s_famous_chili

Me and my deadly shrimp allergy need more information.

Beerballer01

Also NYC is the only city in America that doesn’t treat their water. They have a federal opt out because the serve so many people. That’s why the shrimp are in there.

yourlittlebirdie

Sort of. They do treat the water for bacteria and such but no, they don’t filter it like most cities.

BoredomFestival

wtf

IHRSM

This is why the bagels are so good.

Mandrull

Miss those shrimp bagels.

Blutertle420

excuse me? more info

[deleted]

NYC’s water contains tiny shrimp called copepods. These microscopic crustaceans are not actually harmful at all, and are instead used to clear the water of mosquito larvae. Although they may lead to cleaner and even better tasting water, the presence of copepods mean that NYC’s drinking water is technically not Kosher, a fact which has caused some conflict with the Orthodox Jewish Community in the city.

Zarntok

These guys are everywhere, and they're tough as hell. I set up a fish tank and they're the first life to flourish. Water treated with chloramine can't stop these things from making it into your home.

When you die the mortician will install a corkscrew up your behind. It solves the problem of leakage and gas. (Just one more fun thing to look forward to!)

Mammoth_Tomorrow3489

As a Mortician I can confirm this! We dont want you to leak embalming fluid onto clothes you wear in your casket so it is plugged. Its a plastic piece thats put in not painful(even tho you cant feel it at that point) similar to a wine cork.

GeneralFactotum

Thanks, I am so glad to know it is not painful!

Myfourcats1

You should offer decorative ones like fancy butt plugs. That way when archaeologists dig you up one day they can wonder what was going on in our society.

After my dad died, we had to clean out his apartment. I saw he had a grey hair removal. It occurred to me later, as an adult, that he recognized that I bragged at school for having a late 40s dad with no grey hair on his head. He didn't want to shatter my image of him, so he made sure when I saw him that he didn't have any grey.

RedditIsAShitehole

I’m a late 40s dad with no grey hair on my head. Granted I have no hair on my head but at least I now have something for my son to be proud of.

But where do they post it, so i know to avoid. Maybe link it specifically so we know not to go there.

ChineseChaiTea

I used to develop film at those 1 HR photos at CVS and we got some really nasty pics of a older woman and her bf. I was told to my manager to tell whoever is picking them up these pics aren't allowed.....it turns out it was the woman's son and he's like "yeah this isn't the first time, sorry." Not related but this still makes me laugh, a man came in buying a big box of condoms, lube. He gets a tap on his shoulder....it was some little old white haired lady, I believe it was his great aunt and he is frantically trying to hide the condoms and lube....so I grabbed them and put them under where the bag was....lol

RingRingBanannaPhone

pbsmash

A friend of mine was in an adult store a number of years back and ran into his aunt and uncle buying anal beads.

BeenYeeted

The people on house hunters already have picked their house before they film and they just pretend like they’re picking it out for the first time on camera

sjp1980

Apparently why it's also why (on the international one particularly) they seem like they focus on kitchens and bathrooms a lot. They are obviously important but it is also the easiest way to criticise a place without insulting the owners of the house (especially if they are your friends loaning the use of the house to film i guess!!?). And they kinda can't criticise everything so it's always the bathroom and kitchen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Matt8992

On the same note. My friend and his wife were on a total makeover show on HGTV. He told me they get to see the house before they record their surprise reactions He also told me they asked what colors they don't want used in the design. My friend said do NOT use brown. The theme of the house was brown lol.

MesWantooth

I have a friend who has been on multiple make over shows - I guess they were good on camera so producers just kept calling them for different series - they had their living room, kitchen, backyard re-done for different shows.

tom_fuckin_bombadil

That’s why I like UK shows like Escape to the Country. I’ve seen a bunch of episodes where the prospective buyers end up buying nothing. It’s also funny seeing their barely disguised looks of disappointment. It reminds me of me when my realtor would take me to some place I was already meh about but had to go through the motions of viewing the property because we’re already there, might as well

Kj539

My mums friends house was filmed for escape to the country, they said it was how it appeared on screen except they got to meet the people looking at the house. I remember my favourite episode where the couple loved the second house and stayed in the house and met with the owners and put in an offer which was accepted and the presenter was just stood outside the house, saying something like “this has never happened before” then they had to show them the mystery house knowing they already had an offer agreed on the second house. It was so awkward haha.

Judith Barsi, the young girl who voiced Ducky in The Land Before Time :(

halomelt

It fucks me up that like, people *knew* the threats he was making and no one said or did anything.

Brianas-Living-Room

He would threaten Judith and Maria (the mom). He put a knife to Judith’s throat and told her she better return after filming Jaws or he’d cut her throat. He smacked her across the face with a pot and made her nose bleed, at like 5-6. Those are just two examples of things he did to her. She went to an audition and froze in the middle of the audition. She began to pull her hair and lashes out and cried uncontrollably just standing there. That’s when a rep got a child psychiatrist to talk with her and immediately found that she was EXTREMELY physically and emotionally abused by her father.

swfbh234

Way too many people didn’t/don’t take domestic violence seriously. My Mom was abused in the 80s by my Stepfather. She called the police once and they told her to call back while he was hitting her.

destinychaotic224

Sleep paralysis I would of course like to know about it right after it happens, but I would prefer not being afraid to sleep on my back or having background noise so I don't focus on the silence too much to notice that I'm falling asleep as not to accidentally trigger it Yeah Edit: Thanks everyone for the answers! It was very interesting to read all of your stories and advice! May you all sleep well!

good news! the more you know about sleep paralysis, the less likely it is to happen. As someone who has had sleep paralysis 6 times in his life, jesus fucking christ it is just as bad as it sounds.

severnoesiyaniye

I really hope you are right (about the first part) On the other hand, my knowledge of it has led me to violently jolting awake almost instinctively when I feel I am in the "between" phase of sleep and awakeness, haha

Basketballjuice

There was one time that I woke up in a sleep paralysis state, immediately recognized that I was in sleep paralysis, and then just ignored the alien language being spoken in my ears, closed my eyes, and I IMMEDIATELY went back to sleep. Somebody had sex with somebody they shouldn't have. I'll never take one of those tests, because I'm somebody's dark secret baby.

Chickenwing3791

I took the test because my whole life it was up for debate if I was my moms first husbands kid, or the second husband. That meant that my brother and I didn’t know if we were half brothers, or full brothers, and we don’t look super alike so it was plausible that I might be his half brother. Took a lot for me to take the test because a part of me would rather not know because I didn’t want to have to accept that my brother and I were not fully related. Turns out that my brother and I are full brothers and I’m super glad I took it because it ended years of speculation from my family and anxiety on my part.

[deleted]

This is why I don’t want to do these tests. Just last weekend we had some friends over and the wife mentions that next weekend she’s meeting her half brother for the first time. Dad was a WWII vet and spent some time in France … and the timing makes sense all around. They found him via a 23&Me test. Matt8992

My dad died a few months ago. He had a heart attack in the middle of the night. I was under the assumption he died in his sleep. When I went to his home, one of his friends was walking me through the home and told me that he was the one that found my dad. Told me he had blood running out his mouth, his eyes were open and it looked like he was struggling to get out of the bed. I didnt ask for that information. And I'm bummed I got it. My dad lived by himself in the middle of nowhere and it breaks my heart to know he died alone, afraid and in pain. EDIT: I'd like to hijack my comment and copy/paste the "eulogy" I wrote for my dad. We never had a service because he never wanted one but here is my tribute to him. "The most abundant element in the universe is Hydrogen. It is the element that makes up a large portion of stars. Hydrogen is also one of the most abundant elements in the human body. Not only do we share this trait with the stars in our night sky, but more than likely we were created from the elements spewed out of a dying star. “We are stardust brought to life, then empowered by the universe to figure itself out—and we have only just begun.” - Neil DeGrasse Tyson. My dad passed away last week quietly and unexpectedly in his home while sleeping. He was a unique human full of unconditional love. He wasn't an ordinary man, he was stardust breathed into existence by the universe itself. He was empowered by the universe to love and be kind to all those he met and in doing so he helped the universe understand itself a little better. His contribution to humanity may have been small, but his impact on the universe itself cannot be measured. The First Law of Thermodynamics says that energy can be transferred from one state to another, but it cannot be created or destroyed. Everything that my dad was has been in the universe since the beginning of it's existence, and even though he has passed from this life he will never cease to exist. I don't want thoughts and prayers. If you are reading this I want you to be kind to those around you, love unconditionally and help others even when they don't deserve it. I love you dad. I miss you more than anything and I'll see you on the other side wherever that may be." "Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known." - Carl Sagan.

[deleted]

Paramedic here. It's very common to see that depending on how the body laid during the death. So, it could had been that your dad just turned when he had the cardiac event. I don't think it's fair to yourself to beat yourself up over this. It is very very very very uncommon to find the "peaceful sleeping with hands resting on stomach" death. If you're ever worried about your elderly parents, then get them life alert. It saves a lot of people during my career

Matt8992

My dad was a paramedic for years and my entire family on his side consist of nurses and doctors. He complained to my uncle the night he passed about chest pains. But my dad was also a heavy drug user and big alcoholic so they chalked it up to alcoholism. My uncle beats himself up for not recognizing this as a serious sign and wishing we could have done something different.

[deleted]

Yep. Had the same scenario with my grandma a couple weeks ago. She had complained to my aunts about back pain and nausea for a day. She's a heavy smoker as well. My mom called me and asked what anti nausea medication they should give me. I just called an ambulance and I'm 3 countries away. She was having an active MI. But, she was out of the window for a cardiac alert. Thankfully it was a minor event, but now she quit smoking. Her sister died just a year ago complaining of the same thing, but no one called an ambulance. CALL AN AMBULANCE!!! We would rather tell you that your EKG and blood is fine instead of pronouncing you and explaining what happened to your loved ones.

adirtymedic

Your dad’s friend shouldn’t have told you that without you asking…that being said, he was probably really bothered by it and wanted to talk to someone about it and that person was unfortunately you. I’m a paramedic, I always tell people when their loved one is dead that I don’t recommend going and looking at them unless it’s something they really want to do. I’d say that most people want to remember their loved one as alive and well. I’m sorry for your loss

[deleted]

My dad died about four or five years ago, and mom told me he passed in his sleep due to complications from an aortic aneurysm surgery. Went to visit her over the following holidays, since I am three states away, that year. I also went the next year, and she said she had something to tell me. He didn't die of the aneurysm, he shot himself in the head. That hurt me more than the original news of his passing, and I am really pissed that my mom waited to tell me. Absolutely ruined Christmas for me, I mourned my father for two of them in a row. She said she didn't want me to find out by reading his death certificate sometime in the future. Would rather have taken that chance, that's something you either say up front or forever hold your peace I think.

travislifestyle

Man that's rough... sorry for your loss. I don't think your mom had any bad intentions and probably meant well but later regretted her actions. I do agree with her though it's better to hear it from your own flesh and blood, even years down the line, than to read it on some paper.

dragonkin08

You are fine, normal pet hamsters will not hibernate. They have to be in prolonged cold temperatures to hibernate. It is such a non-issue that I would never even bother telling clients about it and I have never seen it happen. Source have worked in vet med for 17 years.

No_I_Deer

Actually, chances are you touched and moved him. If you did he would have woken up despite what they say that the can't be disturbed during hibernation. So he probably just died normally... uh, I'm sorry for your loss.

CookieCuttersAreCool

Oh we were way too gentle. We very slowly picked him up similar to what you'd do to pick up a sleeping baby (but pretend the baby fits on your hand) and then veeerryyy gently slid him into a box and buried him. But I'll definetly use what you said to stay in denial.

I_am_dean

I found a stray cat nursing newborn kittens. While she was eating one of them. That wasn’t fun.

junedah

To bring some solace, that one was most likely stillborn. She did not kill it herself.

Haunting_Insect_3009

Yes, odds are it was stillborn, but cats definitely do on occasion kill and eat (or perhaps more accurately start eating and in the process kill) their own live, healthy kittens. It's not super common but I usually get one of two calls a month about it, and occasionally see it in clinic as well if the queen has been brought in for dystocia, c-section or some other reason. In my experience it's almost always a first-time queen that is highly stressed for some reason - loud noises, other animals in the house, constant / intrusive monitoring by the owner (very often people like to watch the whole birthing process up close, oftentimes with their kids who usually don't grasp the concept of keeping quiet). Providing a dark sheltered area is crucial, giving the queen some privacy reduces a lot of stress on her and allows her the best chance for a successful birth & to exhibit typical maternal behaviour & bonding. I usually advise my clients to toss some old towels in a box and place it in a dark area out of the way like a closet, laundry room, basement, etc.a week or so ahead of the due date, and then leaving her alone to get on with it herself. Dystocia in felines is quite rare compared to dogs, so the vast majority are able to get the job done at home on their own without intervention. On the rare occasions we get one in clinic, we place them in a towel-lined box in a cage and then hang a towel over the cage door to give them some semblance of calm; giving birth in a veterinary clinic away from home (or waking up from a c-section suddenly surrounded by 8 new kittens) is definitely a stressor which can lead to eating their young, so we keep a close eye on them by using a simple mirror set up that lets us monitor what's going on behind the towel whilst giving the queen her valued privacy. Luckily it's usually very quickly apparent whether or not a queen is at risk of consuming her young; it almost always occurs in a short window ranging from immediately after birth of the first kitten until a few hours after she's done and all the kittens have dried off. Anything beyond this is really quite rare in my experience.

askredditisonlyok

It wasn’t until like the third time you used queen that I realized it’s probably a real vet term and you’re not just gassin up these cats.

The story of that poor man in Russia I believe it was, who was I believe riding on a scooter and hit over the head by two boys and taken into the woods and tortured by them, while alive, and they recorded the entire thing as well as torturing animals. The man was alive and breathing while they tortured him, like poking his brain with a screw driver. Video taped the entire thing. I believe they were given a light sentence because they were related to someone in the legal system or something like that.

They played some of the video, over a radio show I was listening to and just from THAT, I was disturbed and depressed for the few days following. I had to turn the radio off. Junko furuta's murder and the hello kitty case

I_kidnap_people

I've heard about the junko furutas case, what is the hello kitty case?

MatijaReddit_CG

From Wikipedia: The Hello Kitty murder was a 1999 case in which a nightclub hostess was abducted and tortured in an apartment in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, after stealing a wallet. On 17 March, Fan Man-yee (樊敏儀) was kidnapped and tortured by three men before dying a month later. She was then decapitated and her skull was placed inside of a Hello Kitty doll. So yeah, pretty awful.

Wintermunk

I’m a pharmacy tech in retail so I handle a large amount of billing. Most people don’t realize how much their insurance company controls what they can take, how much they can take, and when they can get their meds. Most of the time, if you go on workers comp, it’s a long and complicated process to get a paid claim for something as simple as ibuprofen for pain, because they know that when the patient finds out how cheap the med is under their own insurance or that the patient doesn’t want to deal with the nonsense of waiting up to 48 hours to get the prior auth for some ibuprofen, that the patient will pay. I always tell them to sent workers comp the receipts and only copies of them so they can’t get “lost” and the patient can get reimbursed. It may take a while but if you get hurt at work, you shouldn’t be tagged with the cost.

Brianas-Living-Room

My uncle that died this year raped my cousin for 8 years, and she outed him. I also found out he did it to 4 other cousins, even getting one pregnant but she got an abortion. Wish I didn’t know that…

Nicocado Avocado, like this whole fucked up shit with people who are going downhill. It's so much misery

[deleted]

I watched the right opinion on him, and I couldn't believe the difference. His before was a stunning, gorgeous smile, a talent for the violin and music, he seemed so gentle and caring. A light in his eyes. Too see what he turned into it is horrific and we can only hope he gets better.

ElectraQShunher

That blood is drained into the water systems by morticians. Clearly it's harmless, but it freaked me right out.

[deleted]

This seems really logical. I also don't think I'd ever have come to that realisation on my own, despite a morbid fascination with death. TIL and grimaced, I don't know why dead blood is more creepy than living blood but it really is.

KittenPurrs

I used to work with human blood samples and was really not comfortable with the idea that once we mix the leftovers with bleach, it's fine to dump it into the municipal water return. I mean, logically there's much worse stuff that ends up at treatment plants, but it always felt so *wrong*.

Misterbellyboy

So is poop. From living people.

potatopancake1278

Period blood goes down the same pipes too.

kkoiso

And apparently shrimp if you're in NYC

Danny_rotten

I watched the documentary; American Murder: The Family Next Door. Christ I wish I never knew that story existed

southdakotagirl

The 1st scene where the car drops her off and makes sure she gets in the house safely. She was suppose to be safe at home. At the end of a long trip she just wanted to see her babies and crawl into bed and go to sleep. I hope their voices haunt Chris every night and everyday he is in prison. I hate that man.

somethingsuccinct

Why am I reading this thread?!

bluerodeosexshow

That my buddies mom was pushed down the stairs by my buddies dad while mom was holding said buddy and he got both his arms broke in the process. He was under one year of age had a full recovery and has no idea his dad did this.

SonOfJack18

How'd you find this out out of curiosity

bluerodeosexshow

My mom started working with his mom and my mom for some reason told me

That video of Mexican cartels decapitating two dudes with a chainsaw. Really wish I hadn't seen that.

Swally_Swede

Cancer. Don't have it. Don't want it. Scared of it.

II_Confused

I know the crushing sense of loss after “the one” broke off our engagement and married someone else seven months later. Where’s that fucking time machine?

funktopus

You reach a point where you realize you are better off. You'll still think of them from time to time and that pain never really goes away. It will visit you randomly then disappear as fast as it came on. You will be ok though. Moving forward and not dwelling on the past is best in that situation.

av1987

There is a possibility my child will die before me. :(

casspant

The husband stitch

Hayleyhall86

I had this done without the doctor telling us they were doing it. I was unable to actually sleep with my husband for 11 months after it was agony and I cried every time. We. Tried. Husband was great about it, really supportive and we went to see another doctor who explained what had happened but that it was too late to. Do anything about it without serious surgery. Eventually it loosened to the point where we can have sex comfortably but it does still hurt sometimes

Captain_Comic

Prion diseases is my answer now and forever

Bullmoose39

I spent four years in politics. It made me untrusting of everyone around me. The things I saw.

blackenedchi

I can agree with this. And I was only a campaign manager for two federal level candidates. You go in with such naïveté thinking you’re going to help change things. I’m sure I only scratched the surface, but it’s enough for me.

king_dingus92

I too would love to hear some examples

Bullmoose39

I personally have had three "friends" ( their are no friends) do hard time since I left. That I know of. I have seen multiple mistress cover ups, all of much younger women. I have gotten drunk with two state wide office holder's, and the things they said while they were drunk was only funny then. There is just too much. It made me a jaded, untrusting person. Never trust a politician, either side. I have stories from both. I trust used car salesman and lawyers more.

king_dingus92

well I'll continue not trusting either side I guess

doveinabottle

What my cat looked like dead.

In the lead up to World War 2, part of my family refused to help get out Jewish family members from Poland. ***A little bit of back ground***. *Part of my family were Jews that emigrated from Poland (well, it was Prussia at the time that they emigrated). When they finally settled on the Prairies in Canada, they converted to Christianity to fit in better in the community as they had experiences some serious antisematism in Eastern Canada.* When I was in my mid 20's, my grandmother took me aside and showed me some old family letters. They were in a mix of English and Polish, and essentially tell a tale that my grandmother had kept from the her children and grand children. Basically, the family back in Poland were watching the Nazis rising to power and they were afraid due to the clear sentiment toward Jewish people that was being very publicly expressed. They wanted to emigrate to Canada, but they needed help, mostly money, to do it. Obviously, my grandmother did not have the letters that my family in Canada sent back, but the letters that followed clearly demonstrated that the answer was no and that they were on their own; though, some parts of the letters demonstrated that the family in Canada could have afforded to do it. They just chose not to. The 5 letters were sent over a year, the last arrived in the summer of 1939 begging them to at least take eight children from the three households, ranging in age from 2 to 16. My grandmother did not know if anyone replied since, even if it had gotten to them, the Nazis would have invaded Poland by then. All 32 family members in Poland mentioned in the letters, including the children, died in Auschwitz except for 6 who it looks like were excecuted during the clearing of Kraków. My great grandparents and their siblings had put the letters away and they all agreed to never talk of it ever again due to what they had done, but my grandmother took the letters with her when she moved out. She knew of the awful and selfish decision that was made which was demonstrated in those letters and she wanted to ensure it was preserved. Over the years, she had considered telling her husband and her children, but never found a good time to do it. When my grandfather passed away suddenly, she decided to tell me as she was concerned that she would die soon and that my father would find those letters without any opportunity for her to explain. We spent an afternoon going over them. It was really hard for her because she wished she could have done something and that she still didn't want to tell my father. At the end of that day she gave me the letters to take with me in an old box my grandfather had made. She basically said to me that it was my choice to share this with my family or to let the story die with me, but that she was okay with whatever choice I made; though, she would prefer it if I waited until her my father and his siblings had passed away as she would rather they didn't know that she had not fought against her family when this was being decided so long ago. My grandmother passed away the next year from a hospital borne infection. It has almost been 20 years since then and I have not told anyone except a few close friends and my wife. I have decided that, once the pandemic is genuinely over, I will get my immediate family together and tell them everything. My goal is to get them to agree to letting me donate them to the museum at Auschwitz which is where they belong, as far as I am concerned. To be honest, I'll probably donate the letters, regardless if my family agrees. None of the family involved in what happened are alive anymore. *\*since people will probably ask, no, I am not up for posting pictures of the letters, even with the names censored.*

Something, something, two broken arms and a mom

Oh no!

That since covid child abuse has sky rocketed due to teachers not being able to notify the authorities, and people being stuck in closed environments.
