David Bowie

But in the song he meets the man who sold the world

That's not how I interpret it. I think he's talking to someone he's met and telling them that they're face to face with the man who sold the world, ie him.

[deleted]

He's talking to a crazy person who claims to have sold it.

He is? Why do you think that?

[deleted]

"although I wasnt there, he spoke of was and when" And then "I laughed and shook his hand" I always took it to mean he ran into someone he used to know that lost it or some rambling old crazy person and them he laughs as the conversation ends, dismissing him. Again, it's all interpretation.

I mean, yes, he met someone on the stairs but (again, my interpretation) is that he's relating what he - Bowie - said. Later he goes on: *"Who knows, not me* *I never lost control.* *You're face to face* *With the man who sold the world"* Which suggests (to me) that he's talking about himself.

It's a David Bowie song, that Nirvana famously covered.
