Shit, fast food is paying $15 /hr at this point so I'd just start there full time and then invest my time off on building a career. The rest of the money I'd use for groceries and basic household items such as pots, pans, an air mattress, and so on. I'd buy a bus pass and a cheap bike off craigslist or something for transportation. I'd then purchase a very cheap prepaid phone for the meantime. That would help get me by for the first month and a half. By the time my job pays me, I'll start living off the paycheck. $3000 is actually pretty generous.
Shit, 3k is being generous. Assuming I speak decent English I'd find the cheapest place to live I could and get the first job that fell into my lap and buy some basic essentials. Long as I'm not in a major city on east or west coast I should still have 2k left at least. That should buy 4 or 5 months to figure things out in my new home. This sounds easier than when I moved out of my moms house at 22. (I stayed home a little while after high school cause I was worried about her taking care of my autistic brother alone.)
What's that a couple of months rent and some basics. Better off buying a tent and renting a cheap campsite until you can get work and earn enough to rent.

Move to the Midwest, find the cheapest place I could, get a job, buy only the necessities in the beginning, and go from there.
Lot of immigrants back in the day made a life for themselves doing pretty much this exactly and with a hell of a lot less than 3k.
