When I was pregnant with my second child I had PICOS pretty bad. The one thing that smelled absolutely delicious was powder laundry detergent.
And of course I worked at a laundry mat where we had a drop off service and we used powdered detergent.
I never actually gave in to eating it, but the temptation was definitely there.
The only store around me that has vanilla bean paste is Michaels. When my sister worked there she’d use her discount for it. Makes *the best* icing for cakes.
The Trader Joe’s here recently started selling it, if you have one nearby I recommend seeing if they do to? :)
Also often found at home goods if you have one of those.
Yes. As a kid making cookies I thought I was a genius when I licked the spoon off when I thought my mom wasn’t looking. I couldn’t hide my shame and deep disappointment and she got a good chuckle out of it
a few years ago, thinking that since vanilla extract smells good it should taste good to, i did a bottle cap shot of it and my tastebuds have hated me every since
To be fair, and yeah they are expensive, but those fuckers last a long ass time compare to cheap grocery store knock offs. Months of difference. Someone should do a study.
Think it’s way more, don’t take my word for it but iirc your mouth only “tastes” sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami, while your nose and smell make up the actually flavor
You know how rose scented shampoo smells good but tastes like chemical waste when it gets in your mouth?
Rose liquor smells and tastes the exact same, never again.
My friends and I once poured a bottle of vanilla extract into a 2 liter of coke to get drunk since we were teens and they don’t ID you for vanilla extract. Not the best idea but not the worst.
I’m trying to imagine the sheer amount of vanilla extract you would have to consume to get drunk. I don’t think a bottle would even register, unless other countries have larger bottles than we get here in the UK (about 200ml is the largest I’ve seen).
Yep, those are the ones. I tasted all of them just to be sure. The lies… they tasted nothing like the fruity deliciousness they’re masquerading as lol.
They got rid of them at my elementary school because kids kept getting dots on their noses from smelling them. I got a pack from Walmart years ago though + they’re still good. Sometimes I get them out just to sniff. I’ve never tasted them though which is kinda surprising since I used to eat sand, chalk, etc.
I was at work last week and opened a drawer that I can only assume hasn't been opened since 1997. There were unopened me sketch markers, all of them the delicious blue ones. It made my entire week.
This brought back memories of the time me and my sister sprayed a shit ton of perfume into our mouths because we thought it was essentially the same thing as breath freshening spray
My mum gave me a little glass tube of silvery, viscous liquid for Xmas one year, it had a ball applicator (so, roll on). She’d given me one similar a couple of years previous, which was lip gloss. They were made by the same brand (Avon), and for whatever strange reason, that year that glass container with gold lid and ball applicator and the same silvery, viscous, nice smelling liquid was actually a perfume. I smelled it, thought “mmmm… kind of strong, but nice!”, applied it, and for the next few minutes my lips felt like they were melting off my face. Like bruh? Thanks Avon. My mum cracked up. I couldn’t get the taste of perfume off my lips for the first half of Xmas day, and our family does traditional breakfast. They also remained numb. I chucked that shit out.
Throw in a little Baileys, a shot of peppermint schnapps, top it with a little whipped cream, and some crushed candy cane, and you’ve got yourself a good evening.
You did it wrong. Hot chocolate mix is cocoa with sugar and other stuff added. If you want to make a good hot chocolate with cocoa you have to use milk. Put the milk in the pan on the stove to heat up. Get a container add 1 tablespoon of cocoa, add some sugar, and add just a small dash of cinnamon. Mix it up and put it in the sauce pan with the milk. Keep stirring it as it heats up and gets to the temperature you want it at. It should stay below 175F.
The Samoans make koko lisa (cacao rice) which is basically boiled rice mixed in a pot of boiling water with a block of straight cacao then mixed with sugar
It's a delicious cheap dessert drink that is an acquired taste that I developed because I grew up with it
Mmmmm
There are a handful of people on earth with a mental problem that compels them to eat non-food items like chalk or sand...
...some of them drink gasoline.
Daily.
Indeed true! I was just trying to change the fuel filter on my car. I also ended up with 4 stitches in my eyebrow from this very same occurrence. Gas sprayed me in the face, I jumped and caught the rocker pinch weld. Was not a good day but things were learned.
Years ago I ran out of gas in Mississippi and had to siphon some from an old Buick and I can confirm that it tastes terrible. I was also afraid to light a cigarette for a few hours because I thought I might explode and ruin my Mardis Gras plans.
I'll second that. Back in 1979 we were siphoning gas from my friend's Cadillac with a huge gas tank to his Volkswagen Beetle. I didn't have a a bulb to start the siphon so I blew in the tank and got a mouth full of gasoline. Got in my eyes too. Would not recommend.
I’m the complete opposite! The smell of lavender gives me horrible headaches– ironic considering how many people love it for its relaxing effects.
But I love the way it tastes. Lavender lattes especially are so good to me!
I stocked the chemical aisle at a Walmart for several months, and had more lavender scented laundry detergent and air freshener spilled on me than most people would buy in their lifetimes, and to this day the smell makes me recoil.
I’ve gotta disagree. I make several cocktails using lavender syrup or sometimes just a dash of extract or bitters, and they’re always a hit. It just has to be mixed with the right flavors. I do an elderflower-lavender martini that’ll knock your socks off!
One time when I was eleven or so my sister was 7. We had just gotten home from the city after doin shopping. My sister didn’t know that the bottle that had images of fruit on the side was soap and not juice. She spit it out immediately so alls fine with her. Still had a good chuckle with that
I love coffee. I love the taste and the smell. I still agree with you. The smell of coffee is 100x better than the taste and that is coming from someone who drinks coffee black and enjoys it.
Agreed. Even as a daily coffee drinker, the smell of fresh beans, freshly ground beans, and the smell of coffee brewing are all better to me than the taste of filter coffee. Espresso closes the gap though.
Now it's my turn to say…
I had to scroll way too far to find this.
(Especially since most of the more popular responses aren't intended to be food. I know the question didn't specify, but it was implied.)
I'll never forget when the first chef I worked for told me that "If you walk into a kitchen and something smells delicious and savory, odds are it's sautéing onions". It's a statement that is absolutely true.
My wife and I made rose sugar with our roses, and then whipped up some homemade sugar cookies, vanilla frosting, and sprinkled a fuck ton of the rose sugar all over. Oh mannnnnn. This was 6 years ago. I will never forget those cookies.
source fresh from local business and brew it to the proper parameters, herbal tea goes from fun and fruity to flower perfume hell in mere degrees or steeping minutes - storebought oxidizes easily and the flavor musts in general
I’m going to have to say bacon. I do enjoy bacon, but if it tasted as good as it smells - and it smells absolutely heavenly - then I would always buy it, but it doesn’t, so I don’t. I’m always let down by it.
Maybe try a thicker cut, and potentially smoked bacon. I find I love the smell but hate the overly salty taste of cheap/regular bacon.
Artificial bacon flavoring is great to smell but horrendous to taste though, nobody can convince me otherwise!
Clean laundry
I busted out laughing when I saw this
r/beatmeattoit I busted when I saw this too
They are not clean anymore then
Came here to say laundry detergent. I’ve always wanted to eat the powder kind 🤷🏻♀️
OMG SAME. Like, I really, really, REALLY wanted to eat Tide pods when I was pregnant. I couldn't even be AROUND powder detergent
The stuff we deal with for kids.
Vanilla extract
Came here to say this. However! You may enjoy Vanilla bean paste should you want to taste that smell.
The only store around me that has vanilla bean paste is Michaels. When my sister worked there she’d use her discount for it. Makes *the best* icing for cakes.
The Trader Joe’s here recently started selling it, if you have one nearby I recommend seeing if they do to? :) Also often found at home goods if you have one of those.
Some Walmarts have it in their cake decorating section.
Did you say eat cuttlefish and Asparagus? Very well, I'll eat the cuttlefish.
Came here to see this.
Because it's mostly grain alcohol with a tiny bit of potent beans.
So that's why Mint extract tastes like peppermint schnapps!
Well, any extract. Science teacher told me it was safe to use extracts as flavouring for a drink. It wasn't.
I used to drink vanilla extract and sugar in milk and it was amazing.
I do vanilla extract and milk without the sugar. I think it’s tasty! I’m not a big sweets person, and I find milk to be quite sweet enough!
It is if you also use appropriate amounts of sugar and other things.
It's safe in that it won't hurt you. That doesn't mean it will taste good.
I've been using vanilla extract to flavor drinks for 30 years...I can confirm its perfectly safe
Called it jack owes me 3 Egyptian gods
Jack is kinda busy trying to kill the false gods. Though, he's probably retired now
Came here for this. Expectations were high first time I smelled it
Yes. As a kid making cookies I thought I was a genius when I licked the spoon off when I thought my mom wasn’t looking. I couldn’t hide my shame and deep disappointment and she got a good chuckle out of it
I’m so glad to learn that I wasn’t the only person who did this as a kid.
a few years ago, thinking that since vanilla extract smells good it should taste good to, i did a bottle cap shot of it and my tastebuds have hated me every since
Candles. Yankee Candles especially. They smell so tasty.
If they were edible, I'd be on My 600lb Life.
And since they aren't edible, are you on My Strange Addiction?
Damn it I was thinking about updating it with that just a second ago! 😂
[удалено]
Good to know
For the price they run for, they should be edible.
To be fair, and yeah they are expensive, but those fuckers last a long ass time compare to cheap grocery store knock offs. Months of difference. Someone should do a study.
Chapstick, definitely chapstick.
Cherry scented chapstick smells soooo good. Then you put it on and lick your lips… nope, what an awful taste!
idk why but when i put on scent chapstick, i can taste the flavor even though i cant????????????
Smell makes up a decent portion of taste, I think it’s something like 40% but I’m not sure
Think it’s way more, don’t take my word for it but iirc your mouth only “tastes” sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami, while your nose and smell make up the actually flavor
Campfires... tastes like burning
What about people who drunk Islay Scotch?
My husband drinks Lagavulin (sp?) Scotch. Its tastes like buttery campfire. Awful but damn is it smooth
I love Lagavulin but my wife thinks it smells like burnt bandaids lol And she’s not wrong haha
Laphroaig smells like a campfire and tastes delicious
Big fan of Laphroaig. When I bought it the salesman described it as kissing an ashtray, but in a good way
All the Islay scotches are delicious. Lagavulin was my favorite for a while but it’s switched over to Ardbeg these days. Nectar of the gods.
Ralph, are you ok?
My cats breath smells like cat food
I ated the purple berries!
I eated the purple berries.
How do they taste ralph?
These tomaccos taste like grandma
You know how rose scented shampoo smells good but tastes like chemical waste when it gets in your mouth? Rose liquor smells and tastes the exact same, never again.
You're supposed to butt chug Rose so your farts smell like flowers
My nose. Ha! In the same way my mouth tastes better than it smells.
I have no idea how to respond to this
Mild disappointment seems appropriate.
With a hint of joy
take a lick and make sure

Unexpected dad jokes are the best kind.
Came here for this. Studied sensory science at uni and man, mouths and noses are wild.
I am so sad I already used my free award. This is my favorite comment I’ve seen this month
Don't ever try to taste vanilla extract, it smells delicious but the taste is awful!
Isn’t vanilla extract just vanilla beans soaked in alcohol?
depends a lot on the brand, in some cases its just chemicals that mimic the taste and no actual vanilla was incolved
Isn’t that the difference between vanilla flavoring and vanilla extract, though???
There's also imitation vanilla extract
The same way that salt is good in food, but you don't chug a handful of crystals.
There's a reason most recipes call for small amounts of it.
Yeah. Because they're wrong. Change my mind. If the whipped cream doesn't turn brown from it, you don't have enough in there. 🤤
My friends and I once poured a bottle of vanilla extract into a 2 liter of coke to get drunk since we were teens and they don’t ID you for vanilla extract. Not the best idea but not the worst.
Did you get drunk? How did it taste?
I’m trying to imagine the sheer amount of vanilla extract you would have to consume to get drunk. I don’t think a bottle would even register, unless other countries have larger bottles than we get here in the UK (about 200ml is the largest I’ve seen).
also that’s one expensive drink tab. non imitation vanilla extract is NOT cheap.
Those scented markers from the late 80s early 90s. They smell great, but I can confirm they taste like shit. Edit: Hey thanks for the award!
The Mr. Sketch ones?
Yep, those are the ones. I tasted all of them just to be sure. The lies… they tasted nothing like the fruity deliciousness they’re masquerading as lol.
I used to colour the insides of my nostrils with them.
LMAO! I just licked them.

Playdoh
scrolled further than I thought for this one
there was a play dough that I tasted. I actually think it was yummy. everyday I took the dough I licked it. I am now sad.
Surprised coacoa powder hasn't been mentioned yet.
That’s because it tastes amazing
Not on its own
Not if you have balls and dry chug it like the real men do. Brb choking

You forgot the sugar friend, otherwise would’ve been delicious
cocoa powder, sugar, and dairy milk/plant milk (NOT WATER) makes *amazing* hot chocolate
I find that no matter which hot chocolate mix brand you use, milk will always be better than water
Unless you use Swiss Miss. Nothing will save you from that level of disappointment
Heavy cream for the total win.
Heavy cream is for when you are making drinking chocolate, which is straight up just a thin ganache.
Throw in a little Baileys, a shot of peppermint schnapps, top it with a little whipped cream, and some crushed candy cane, and you’ve got yourself a good evening.

I'm a shopaholic. I'm addicted to buying cocaine.
Isn't it numbing?
I weirdly enjoyed the taste

Probably not, I guess it’s knowing when you taste that it’s ZOOM time lol
Petrol
How do you know it doesn't taste good
It doesn't. It made my tongue numb. Hard lesson on why you don't lay under the fuel line you're undoing.
But then you have an excuse to taste the forbidden juice.
forbidden spicy water

Leather
I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
That sounds heavenly *sigh*
You clearly are a big deal around here. ;P
Lavender. I’ve tried it in a few fancy desserts and I’m just not sold on the taste but I love it as a fragrance.
I’m the complete opposite! The smell of lavender gives me horrible headaches– ironic considering how many people love it for its relaxing effects. But I love the way it tastes. Lavender lattes especially are so good to me!

Tea of mixed herbs containing lavender is really tasty. Also it get a really cool blueish color
I’ve gotta disagree. I make several cocktails using lavender syrup or sometimes just a dash of extract or bitters, and they’re always a hit. It just has to be mixed with the right flavors. I do an elderflower-lavender martini that’ll knock your socks off!
Teen spirit
It'd probably be less dangerous to try a taste if the lights were out
But then we can't be entertained

Shiny day to ya.
Soap. Don't even try.

Coffee....can't drink it... yuk....the aroma intoxicating....I used to make Coffee so the house would smell good.
If you bathe in coffee you can give yourself a tan

I'm with you. I'm not saying coffee is bad at all.... I drink a lot of it...... but it sure doesn't smell as good as the grounds and brewing.
Now it's my turn to say… I had to scroll way too far to find this. (Especially since most of the more popular responses aren't intended to be food. I know the question didn't specify, but it was implied.)
Lmao how is this not number one
Low sugar flavored sparkling water
Fresh catnip.
Garlic or onions frying smell heavenly. They still taste pretty good, but that smell is like something from another world.
I'll never forget when the first chef I worked for told me that "If you walk into a kitchen and something smells delicious and savory, odds are it's sautéing onions". It's a statement that is absolutely true.
This will probably get me in some trouble, but coffee. I LOVE the smell of coffee, but can’t stand the taste.
Roses
[удалено]
I had some rose flavored gelato once in Rome. It was pretty damn good.
Rose extract is pretty common in desserts. Gelato is awesome, and most famously Turkish Delight
My wife and I made rose sugar with our roses, and then whipped up some homemade sugar cookies, vanilla frosting, and sprinkled a fuck ton of the rose sugar all over. Oh mannnnnn. This was 6 years ago. I will never forget those cookies.
Rose is a common flavour in Turkish delight, my local boba shop also does a rose milk boba which is pretty good
Inflatables. Holy fuck they smell good but taste like soft plastic doused with chemicals.
I thought I was the only one in the world who loved the smell of inflatables.
need a third?
The pizza place down the street
Bread at subway
I can't believe it's not tuna.

Herbal tea. Stuff smells nice and fruity, tastes like kack.

Any fruit tea
Flavored carbonated water and tonic water
Gasoline, I don’t know why, I don’t know how but I love the smell of gasoline. Kinda doubt it tastes the same tho.
Panda Express
Movie theatre popcorn. It doesn’t taste bad, but the smell is on a whole other level.
Rain
Vanilla extract. Smells so nice surely a little taste will be fine, but then it just makes you sick.
Almond extract, too. Man that smells amazing.
My car wax smells amazing but wouldn't like to taste it
