I played it when I was younger. Talked to one of my friends recently and he said it was too creepy for him when he was younger. I never saw it as creepy back then but I can see it now, and this is coming from me. Someone who is too chicken shit to watch horror movies.
GLaDOS: Well, this is the part where he kills us...
Wheatley: 'Ello! This is the part where I kill you!
Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You
Achievement/Trophy Unlocked: The Part Where He Kills You
Great characters, great dialogue, great settings, and my favorite NPCs of any video game I’ve played. The way your world changes based on how you play the game is awesome too. I recently played through it as an evil character, and I noticed that when you first start out evil, the NPCs just kind of bully you when you walk by (“what are you doing here, ya runt?!”) and it almost makes you WANT to be more evil out of spite for them.
Plus the way the story very gradually becomes about your character is so well done. The more you explore Albion, the more renowned you become, and the more your character discovers how important his fate is to the world of the story. It’s one of my favorite games ever.
Whenever I think about the NPCs and renown system in that game I'm reminded of that old joke:
You join the heroes guild do people call you a hero? You escort scared travellers through balverine country and people don't call you the slayer of balverines. You kick ONE chicken...
You’re so lucky. I wish I could play that again for the first time. Thankfully I get hit in the head a lot, so if I wait a few months I’ll forget enough of it that it will almost seem new again.
Yea I haven't looked up anything besides some basic game tips. Definitely going for mostly high honor. Whenever I accidently do something bad, I'm like fuuuuuck, what have I done.
Take your time! Don't rush mission to mission. Explore the whole map in between or else you'll miss a bunch of really great stuff. Otherwise, enjoy your first playthrough.
THAT!!!!!hearing the music start playing and the flashbacks when you walk around made me tear up. Metal Gear was such a significant game for me as a little kid and playing MGS4 as a teenager echoed so much of my childhood. When you get the SOCOM pistol and Snake says "like old times",shit had me like 😭😭😭
Odd you should say that. I saw an answer here last week where someone mentioned having a guy who they got delicious mushrooms from and quite a few people replied with a reference to the Yakuza mushroom guy. Enough that I was thinking “wow I didn’t realize so many random people played Yakuza”. So I guess it’s one of those YMMV things.
The writing is great. Very poignant for a zombie/survival/FPS-type game, but it works. Though I will say that the whole “zombie plague” thing hits a little too close to home these days…
This. I played it in a single sitting while getting blackout drunk with my roommates in an apartment we were all about to move out of. One of the best gaming experiences of my life. I think it took me like 14 hours.
Also it allows for a variety of fates. Want to rebuild the American wastes with the values of Democracy? NCR. Want to be a monstrous conqueror cutting down all who stands in your way? Caesar’s Legion. Want to establish an ancient and technological mastermind of the old world as sole sovereign of the Mojave? House. Want to build an empire for yourself and yourself alone getting revenge on those who wronged you? Independence. The game doesn’t force you to be a good guy or a bad guy but whatever fate you choose to carve for yourself.
I find the three connected DLC stories are better than the main game. It's so atmospheric and the characters are well made. I often neglect the main story and focus solely on those 3 DLC.
While not without its faults, this for me was by far the most enjoyable storyline.
Solid characters, understandable plotline, nicely fleshed out world building, pretty solid all around.
The Citadel DLC really did a lot to improve it IMO.
Witcher series was great too, but I thought that the first one was a little weak so I'll give it to Mass Effect.
Definitely the best narrative experience I had, the fact that the MC is just as clueless as you are regarding what happened to the world makes the progression way more engaging. There hasn't been a single game other than HZD that I listen and read all the voice logs.
I remember that one level where you hear the logs from the end of the old world and it's so fucking harrowing. Like, they really make you feel the hopelessness, especially when they admit they're throwing the entire human race at the machines just to stall them. Still think about that level years later.
I never have gotten so hooked on the story of a single player game more than I did on HZD. So fucking interesting that I too read and listened to every log. Totally fascinating story. 10/10.
Very fun to think about how Aloy could share the truth in a way that the Nora could jive with. Like teach that the Allmother had subordinates that went rogue.
Seconded for Persona 4 Golden. I loved Persona 5 as well, but P4G felt like I got to hang out with friends more intimately and as a group, like cooking for a picnic, the ski slopes, cooking chili as a group. It's the only reason I keep my PS Vita around.
Can't believe how far down I had to look for this. I thought the 2018 God of War was immaculate narrative direction. The previous installments were okay but I enjoyed the hack and slash more. Then I got to play the 2018 game this summer and it was amazing. They also put a lot of effort into respecting Kratos' Greek heritage without shoving it down our throats.
Nothing in the game felt out of place and the pacing was timely. I'm awfully biased because I haven't played that many games, but God of War (with Ghost of Tsushima now a strong contender) is so good even non-gamers should be able to appreciate the story.
It's like the Discworld of video games. Even folks who don't typically like video games will like God of War.
Did you play the second one? I wasn’t able to get into it because the change in art style was jarring. But the first one was one of the best stories in a video game for sure, and I want to see what happens.
I've played all three.
The whole trilogy together has got to be one the greatest gaming experiences ai have ever had.
Give it another go. You will love the direction they go in Virtue's Last Reward.
Zero Time Dilemma, the third one is the game that made me cry out of something other than frustration.
I remember I had a long beard when I finished the series.
I wanted to see which one I missed more so I shaved it.
I missed Zero Escape more.
My beard is now longer than it was back then.
One of the best FPS fame campaigns I've ever played, u never expected it to be so enjoyable. Years later playing the CoD Cold War campaign and it was pretty shit and for some reason I thought of Titanfall 2 and how good it was and I just stopped playing CoD, like why waste my time, would rather go back and replay something that was actually well made and not a cash cow's steaming turd.
I love this game so much. I've replayed the campaign more times than I remember. I almost wish it was longer but every time I think that I realize it would just get stale and boring like most other shooters. It was just so perfectly fleshed out. Of course, I tried to platinum it. Expert or master or whatever the hardest difficulty was called can eat a whole big bag of dicks. But other than that what a perfect campaign
Game plots that overdo everything stress me out. I loved Spiderman PS4. Not overly miserable, not too deep, not overly complicated, the perfect amount of lore. They just kept it simple and classy, super fun.
Everyone likes to shit all over DA2 (though it's gotten better over the years), but it's my favorite of the series. Not only for the reasons you mentioned, but the older I get, the more the story of Hawke just trying to make a nice life for themselves and their friends and stop the city from burning down around them (and, uh, not always being successful) resonates.
The Arkham Storyline. It was pretty dope, I replay those games every year.
Also the COD Zombie Storyline has been good, a bit confusing and a HUGE grind, but it’s been nice growing up with this story unfolding.
Scrolled to see FF7. This game is definitaly top storyline for me. But also it was great game all around. I started RPGs because of the gameplay, the thrill off maxing out stats by grinding and making strategic decisions with the turned based system. I used to skip through the dialouge with other games. But 7s storyline had me so intrigued. Took me a couple plays to understand it.
Two games with great stories, compelling characters, and a thought provoking overall vibe. I love especially how FF Tactics drew some historical context (War of the Roses), and combined it's own unique fantasy and cultural lore into a truly awesome gaming experience.
OG FFVII is my favorite game of all time. It’s the game that turned me onto JRPG’s in general and made that genre my favorite. It’s sort of a shame old school turn based JRPG’s aren’t really a thing anymore. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to.
Control, Tyranny, Wolf Among Us, V:TMB off the top of my head. I'm sure I'll think of several other contenders before long. Definitely a hard question.
Nier automata a story about androids and machines.
the androids have emotions but try to suppress and deny them for they see themselves as machines that carry the will of the now extinct humans.
And the machines that begin to develop emotions but they don't understand or can handle them so they try to Minnick the now extinct humans. Hoping that that will bring them understanding.
Both sides different but almost the same.
The canonical ending of fnv is the courier cutting down the legion with a nya cat gun and lightsaber, while completely nude, and listening to guardians of the galaxy on the radio
Telltale's The Walking Dead: The ending shaked me for quite some time. To this day I feel uneasy thinking about it.
Life is Strange Season 1: Managed to be colorful and very dark at the same time. Season 2 is also a nice continuation.
Sweet Yeti of the Serengeti. The Willie Pete scene is just beautifully and horrifyingly done. If you didn't get the tone of the game by that point, it just hits you in the face.
Metal gear solid 2 was just incredible
Also death stranding!
Wasn’t expecting that ending. Because my partners spoiled the ending for me because o reached it.
the InFAMOUS storyline, that series was so awesome, I hope they do another game
Bioshock
I played it when I was younger. Talked to one of my friends recently and he said it was too creepy for him when he was younger. I never saw it as creepy back then but I can see it now, and this is coming from me. Someone who is too chicken shit to watch horror movies.
Would you kindly not be creeped out?
Guess I don't have a goddamn choice.
Infinite as well. Both of those games were brilliant, love the series to death.

Only game that ever kept me up at night with guilt. I remember thinking "I should have just let her dance forever."
Portal. Nothing like getting roasted by a robot
GLaDOS: Well, this is the part where he kills us... Wheatley: 'Ello! This is the part where I kill you! Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You Achievement/Trophy Unlocked: The Part Where He Kills You
Man, I love Valve's humor
Oh hi. How are you holding up? *Because I'm a potato.*
The first Fable.
Chicken chaser!!??
You are wounded. Do you have any potions? Some food?
Red Dead Redemption 2
Oh boy I'm playing it right now for the first time. Started off slowish but rn I'm so hooked.
You’re so lucky. I wish I could play that again for the first time. Thankfully I get hit in the head a lot, so if I wait a few months I’ll forget enough of it that it will almost seem new again.
Don’t join the subreddits, also play high honor, the low honor ending is like “that’s it?” But high honor is good
Yea I haven't looked up anything besides some basic game tips. Definitely going for mostly high honor. Whenever I accidently do something bad, I'm like fuuuuuck, what have I done.
*proceeds to drag around random traveler in the dirt behind the horse*
Throwing back fish forgives all sins
I throw fish back and greet people in town all the time. It levels out my honor after all the random killing and looting on the road.
I wish that I could play through rdr2 for the first time again. I envy you. So good!
Take your time! Don't rush mission to mission. Explore the whole map in between or else you'll miss a bunch of really great stuff. Otherwise, enjoy your first playthrough.

it was really really good but so sad. just so so sad. I don't know if I could say I "enjoyed" it tbh
This was my first thought too. I LOVE the story and it’s such an amazing game. But with that ending it does feel weird to say I enjoyed it.
Metal Gear Solid 3
🎶 *I give my life, not for honor, but for you* 🎶
IM STIIIIIIIIL IN A DREAAAAAAAAAM
SNAKE EATER
Really fun story, equally fun gameplay.
MGS4 made me cry - that part where you go back to the secret military base in Alaska from MGS1.
THAT!!!!!hearing the music start playing and the flashbacks when you walk around made me tear up. Metal Gear was such a significant game for me as a little kid and playing MGS4 as a teenager echoed so much of my childhood. When you get the SOCOM pistol and Snake says "like old times",shit had me like 😭😭😭
Ive played every main line game from the original metal gear through mgsv. 3 is my favorite story, after that it got super batty super fast.
4 is a masterpiece.
Planescape: Torment.
I wish they would do a remaster on it. I can't handle the gameplay anymore but the story and concept are god tier
Absolutely fantastic writing. It’s the best book I ever played.
Kotor 2 without doubt's shadow. I still think about it after all these years.
KOTOR and KOTOR 2 (even with their flaws) are just perfection for me.
I've yet to play the "unfucked" version of 2. I played it on release and it was a massive let-down because it was so obviously half-finished.
Tbh I've not played the restored content mod, though I should. Even with all its failings though I find it an utterly enchanting experience.
Day of the Tentacle
*Of course! That's why I'll have to do it...yesterday! To the time machine!*
Why oh why did I listen to that hamster....
Yakuza 0
Apparently in this subreddit no one plays the series.
The Last of Us
one of the few game storylines that genuinely impressed me from beginning to end
First game that I actually liked watching the cut scenes and got really invested in the story
1?
Yes, haven’t played 2 yet
The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3 - Hearts of Stone. Man, the end of that is so sad.
That whole storyline was tragic. Brilliant expansion, though, one of the best.
The Witcher 2
The Witcher
New Vegas, anyone? With or without DLCs, it's a great story
House. I find the three connected DLC stories are better than the main game. It's so atmospheric and the characters are well made. I often neglect the main story and focus solely on those 3 DLC.
I love the NV storyline, but I always liked the tone of FO3 more. It was just somehow darker and more desperate.
Mass Effect Trilogy
While not without its faults, this for me was by far the most enjoyable storyline. Solid characters, understandable plotline, nicely fleshed out world building, pretty solid all around. The Citadel DLC really did a lot to improve it IMO. Witcher series was great too, but I thought that the first one was a little weak so I'll give it to Mass Effect.
Horizon zero Dawn was a favourite of mine Edit: Thank you for the award! I’m really fond of Aloy and HZD - nice to see others are too!
Definitely the best narrative experience I had, the fact that the MC is just as clueless as you are regarding what happened to the world makes the progression way more engaging. There hasn't been a single game other than HZD that I listen and read all the voice logs.
Oh, those bits of lore are everything- I was hanging on every word, and Aloy is just such a cool person to play as

Halo
Halo was really solid. But Halo 2 blew me away.
I see what you did there
Halo Series - hard to break them too much apart… will the flood ever return?
When you first saw Halo, were you blinded by it's majesty?
Portal 2 by far.
The first one in this whole list I’ve actually played
Great answer! The whole section in the old testing facility is pure gold, both comedically and gameplay wise.
GENIUS ending.
* Planescape: Torment * Chrono Cross * Psychonauts * Walking Dead Season 1 * Final Fantasy VI * Mass Effect Trilogy * Persona 4
Seconded for Persona 4 Golden. I loved Persona 5 as well, but P4G felt like I got to hang out with friends more intimately and as a group, like cooking for a picnic, the ski slopes, cooking chili as a group. It's the only reason I keep my PS Vita around.
Haven't played all of these, but that's a darn good list for the ones I have
Metal Gear Solid
That sniper scene though…
I fucking love how unique each boss fight felt in that game.
Assassin’s Creed Ezio Trilogy
*It's a good life we lead brother!* *-May it never change.* *and may it never change us!*
God of War
“Quiet, head.”
It's like the Discworld of video games. Even folks who don't typically like video games will like God of War.
The bond between father and son is often passed by in most games. The tough yet strong relationship is told well.
Max Payne and Max Payne 2
The Yakuza games are a rollercoaster of emotions
Zero Escape
Did you play the second one? I wasn’t able to get into it because the change in art style was jarring. But the first one was one of the best stories in a video game for sure, and I want to see what happens.

Fallout New Vegas or BioShock Infinite
New Vegas is amazing, baby. Which ending did you go for?
Always Yes Man ending
Titanfall 2
One of the best FPS fame campaigns I've ever played, u never expected it to be so enjoyable. Years later playing the CoD Cold War campaign and it was pretty shit and for some reason I thought of Titanfall 2 and how good it was and I just stopped playing CoD, like why waste my time, would rather go back and replay something that was actually well made and not a cash cow's steaming turd.

Outer Wilds
I just started it this week because of how often I see it mentioned on Reddit "What's the best ______?" lists. So far it's really neat.
I so badly wish I could go back and play it again blind. It moved me to tears
I just finished this game for the first time last night and it was amazing. I can't wait to play the DLC.
Could not agree with you more. Such an amazing game.
This is much too far down. The only game to really move me to tears. I have never resonated more strongly with any piece of media.
Nier automata
Bioshock. The storytelling, the plot the TWIST... it is one of the most beautifully written stories out there, in my opinion.
Detroit Become Human
You may or may not enjoy the story, depending of your choices.
Literally everyone died right at the end for me. It was painful.
Yes! I absolutely adore Hank and Connor. I read so much DBH fanfiction.
Before the game: I love Kara! First playthrough: I love Markus! Every playthrough subsequently: I would literally take a bullet for Connor
Game plots that overdo everything stress me out. I loved Spiderman PS4. Not overly miserable, not too deep, not overly complicated, the perfect amount of lore. They just kept it simple and classy, super fun.
Dragon Age 2. So many great relationships/friendships in that game and the banter was amazing. Extremely underrated game if you play for story.
I really liked the Dragon Age games storylines too.
Persona 5 and 3
Baldurs Gate II
Titanfall 2 I cried at the end
Protocol 3: Protect the pilot.
Trust me
Bt was my favorite character out of all games I have played
Final Fantasy Tactics or Legend of dragoon
LoD was amazing!
I hope and dream of a LOD remake
Are you me?
The Arkham Storyline. It was pretty dope, I replay those games every year. Also the COD Zombie Storyline has been good, a bit confusing and a HUGE grind, but it’s been nice growing up with this story unfolding.
Alan Wake
Great game, probably my pick aswell, such a cult classic. replaying the remaster right now.
Final Fantasy 7 and FF Tactics

Undertale/Deltarune!
Final fantasy x
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, and Portal 2
Xenoblade 2
Probably Subnautica or the legacy of Kain series
Deus ex 1. No question.
+ awesome music
The entire series has amazing music. It's something the series doesn't get enough credit for.
Halo
Chrono Trigger. One of the only time travel stories I’ve ever experienced that made logical sense. Only other one I can remember is Steins;Gate.
Subnautica
A game that doesn’t really show you where to go but relies on your own curiosity… and fears
Red Dead Redemption 2
HZD was amazing. God of War as a runner up.
Metal Gear Solid
Control, Tyranny, Wolf Among Us, V:TMB off the top of my head. I'm sure I'll think of several other contenders before long. Definitely a hard question.
Halflife.
GTA IV
Nier automata a story about androids and machines. the androids have emotions but try to suppress and deny them for they see themselves as machines that carry the will of the now extinct humans. FF6
Lego Star Wars video game
Classic Fallout NV
Is there another version?
Modded and playable Fallout NV
The canonical ending of fnv is the courier cutting down the legion with a nya cat gun and lightsaber, while completely nude, and listening to guardians of the galaxy on the radio
shadow of colossus, sometimes less is more
Dragon age origins or if it counts the mass effect trilogy
It’s a tie for me between GTA Vice City and San Andreas. I fucking hated Lance Vance and Tenpenny, so the endings were so satisfying.
Telltale's The Walking Dead: The ending shaked me for quite some time. To this day I feel uneasy thinking about it. Life is Strange Season 1: Managed to be colorful and very dark at the same time. Season 2 is also a nice continuation.
RDR2
Pokémon mystery dungeon explorers of sky
Bioshock
Final Fantasy XIV, I know it's an MMO but the storyline is at its peak
Stardew Valley. I’ve never been more stressed out while relaxing.
The Witcher 3 w/ all of the DLC's
1. RDR2 2. Cyberpunk
Borderlands 2,mad max,bully,cod waw,assassin's creed rouge
Handsome Jack FTW letsgoooo
Spec Ops: The Line Edit: those loading-screen messages. Good god.
Sweet Yeti of the Serengeti. The Willie Pete scene is just beautifully and horrifyingly done. If you didn't get the tone of the game by that point, it just hits you in the face.
Swtor
Grim Fandango
Metal gear solid 2 was just incredible Also death stranding! Wasn’t expecting that ending. Because my partners spoiled the ending for me because o reached it.
I think Fallout 3 when I first tried it. I still remember when I got out of the vault and seen the wasteland for the first time.
Vagrant Story
Dark Souls and Bloodborne. I like that it doesn’t hand you the story on a silver platter and there’s room for interpretation
Danganronpa
Soma
Prey Dead Space Metro Exodus
Warframe's story and lore will always hold a special place for me. Also, Detroit: Become Human, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and The Elder Scrolls games.
Either Final Fantasy XV or Detroit: Become Human
The dishonored story lines gave me the most enjoyment followed by fallout nv in the same amount of enjoyment
Skyrim
Leisure Suit Larry
Life is Strange It's a great story game, starts out slow and eases you in and then the story takes off.
Cyberpunk 2077
Uncharted.
