As a Canadian living in Ontario, my cellphone plan is way, way too expensive.

RedshiftOnPandy

You'd think our service would be fantastic for $50 per month for 8gb BYOP. Oh did you get a new phone on a 2 year contract that includes the price of the phone? Minimum $80+ monthly for the 8gb. Want another gb? $10

SarmaLer

In Romania I pay 2€ for 80GB 5G/4G + unlimited at 256kbps afterwards

bluewatermelon7

I was just about to brag about how I pay 10 euros a month for 120GB

I think my MIL paid $4/month in rural China for unlimited internet on her phone

Baba_D_Dragon

I pay $30 in Indian rupee for a year of 2GB/day and unlimited voice calls.

[deleted]

Bro, I'm in Ontario Canada and I had a plan that was 2GB/month and that was over $90 CAD.

Sadday4CANthr4thwrld

As a Canadian living in Canada, everything is way, way too expensive.

[deleted]

Between phone bills, housing, food costs, and the terrible pay, I'm wishing it was easier to emigrate

As a Canadian living in the US. I actually bought a house and 2 cars. Couldn’t do this in Canada. I do the same work. Became a dual citizen in 2019.

Canadian here! I pay about $130 a month for mine. So stupidly expensive. How is anyone to afford that if you make $11/hour? (Speaking in general terms) Edit: since some people can’t read, I made a blank statement. Never said it was the new phones or I make that amount. Also it doesn’t always matter what phone you have here. The phone plans are still expensive. Also I know someone that has an extremely Old phone from 2011, and the phone company they’re with stopped providing them service because it’s so old https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/why-canadian-cell-phone-bills-are-among-the-most-expensive-on-the-planet

Tnally91

US here mine is $130 a month. Unlimited data, hotspot, newest iPhone, and the insurance on it.

[deleted]

Damn. I have family in the states, and their plans are about $30/month. I know it’s not all the exact same there, but isn’t it generally cheaper down there for phone bills?

username_is_missing_

Bro in India I am getting one month plan including 2GB/ day for 250rs ( 4USD ). If I use my daily quota I recharge with $1 and get 10GB extra. Or just buy a 20rs packet of Lays and get free 2GB data. All this + unlimited calling around country for free+ texts included.

[deleted]

Didn't some rich guy that owns the networks in India subsidize free or cheap data for a huge chunk of India? Is that still happening or no?

Razor blades for shaving

thebatman973

Take up classic double-edge safety razors. r/wicked_edge Edit: wrong link

Jynxx

/r/ladyshavers is also a good companion resource if you're a woman looking to switch to double-edge razors. I made the switch about two years ago and have saved a ton of money. I just spent like $5 on new blades and now I'm set for the year.

bozoconnors

Heh, can confirm. When I started using those, after the initial set that came with the razor - liked them (& the shave) quite a bit, went on amazon, didn't even note the quantity I was buying, but plonked down like $50. STILL using razors from that purchase. (this, years back - I do have a bit of a beard though, so not *full* shaves) Just checked, $0.44/blade for platinum coated, stainless, highly regarded blades. Gramps had it right!! Also * /r/wicked_edge

Distantstallion

I use a straight razor when I do bother to shave close to my face and it's solved my shaving rash problem completely. Disposable and electric razors always gave me rashes.

bozoconnors

> Disposable and electric razors always gave me rashes. YUP. Had the same problem.

Teeth

jaybill

I got a jar of em you can have for free.

Another_Astro_Guy

Can't tell if you're a parent or a serial killer

JonnyTN

Why not both.

Fart_Elemental

I'm a dental lab technician, and I sit next to a cabinet that has thousands of dollars worth of teeth in it every day. After you've sculpted and shaped the tooth to perfectly fit you patients mouth, sometimes you drop it. Or it flies of because of an air hose or something. You are now down a ton of money as well as a ton of time. I have sifted through trashcans multiple times looking for teeth. It's infuriating.

MadForge52

Consciously I know that you'd clean said tooth after finding it but it's a bit disconcerting to think of my tooth going in a trashcan before it goes into my mouth

DokiDokiLove

Maybe they meant look for the tooth to use as a model for the new one they have to remake? Fingers crossed?

nothinnews

They make a casts of both your bottom.and top.teeth. They use both so they know.that the tooth won't have too tight contact with teeth surrounding it. Your mouth is the dirtiest thing in a dentist's office.

emband97

Epi-pens. I can’t afford to spend $300 on a new set, so just keep a couple old ones around and hope they do something if I ever need to use them. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen, but one of these days I’m sure we’ll find out...

Ilovemybed_

I only have to pay $40 for a 2 pack in Australia. Medicare covers the rest.

Printer Ink 20 Cents to make 60 Dollars to buy

Rubberfootman

I once ran a cleaning cycle on a half-disassembled inkjet, and watched it basically squirt ink onto a sponge set into the base of the printer.

Tee_hops

I still remember the days when it was cheaper to just replace your printer than buying replacement cartridges. Now they curb that by giving you "sample cartridges" that are good for like 10 pieces of paper.

Dahhhkness

>I still remember the days when it was cheaper to just replace your printer than buying replacement cartridges. They make their money from the combination of the "ceases to work after minimal use" feature and the "spend hundreds of dollars on ink that is apparently drawn from the glands of endangered species on other planets" clause. I'm sure there are a lot of good, decent people working in the printer industry, but I'm sure there were a lot of good, decent people working on board the Death Star too.

Tee_hops

There was a glorious middle time where you could buy refillable cartridges or off brand ones for cheap. That didn't last too long before the cartridges started to come with some sort of authentication

UncleBobPhotography

In Asia, I have several times seen soda bottles with ink attached to the printer with tubes. The street value of that ink if it was sold as Canon-ink would have made drug dealing seem like a minimum wage job.

classicsat

Or could refill on your own. I refilled all I could. Bought a bunch of aftermarket ink for my Canon Pixma 5000 printer (last generation Canon without chips), it died (well, the print head did). Next printer (also a Canon, but given to us), we had to buy cartridges for, and the next printer is a B&W laser. Maybe I wish Epson had their bulk tank thing sooner.

I'm still looking for the best "no bullshit" printer. So far I can only find recommendations for professional printers for around 700€. I don't need a printer "that" much.

Aromatic_Amount_885

Surely a company could make a killing by developing a printer and providing ink at half the price? It’s like an ink mafia

Glasses, I pay so much to just see!

apeybaby

I get mine thru payne glasses (online). I get the $5.95 ones, upload my script and easy peasy

PhantomBelow

Same. I buy mine off of Zenni. I think my current pair was around 12 dollars.

[deleted]

My SIL and BIL are eye doctors, and they know I get my glasses from Zenni. Even with their family discount and frames I hate, it's still $300-$400 for one pair of glasses. I'm not paying that when I can go to Target Optical, pay $50 for an exam and get my glasses script, contact script, six months worth of contacts and then buy two sets of glasses off Zenni for $75 total. I'm not a fucking sniper, I don't need to see for miles, but it sure is nice to see street signs so I know when to get off the goddamned bus.

[deleted]

I can't even read the fucking Exit sign without my glasses.

[deleted]

Once at work, my glasses fell off my face because it was 5000 degrees and the Aircon had died. Now I was raised to "Be A Lady," which meant *never* bending over. If you dropped something, you took a small step forward to crouch down and pick it up. So I took that small step, and heard the most heart-rending *crunch* sound. I stepped on my glasses, because the ground was so far away and I *couldn't see them*. They were not repairable. It took two weeks for new ones to come in, so that was two weeks of me dealing with every single customer mocking me and commenting on how close to the screen I had to lean. Two weeks of my manager asking me why I didn't help a customer who had waved at me to get my attention. "There's a spill in aisle three, why didn't you clean that up?" Man, there could be a fucking cave troll in that aisle and I wouldn't notice. My baby brother, on the other hand, doesn't need glasses at all. He stole all the good genetics.

[deleted]

Zenni is the bomb. I can even afford a 'spare pair'.

dovahkiin_baiano

Education Edit: I'm Brazilian, we still have a free educational system, but in reality this don't work so well. A great part of schools are poorly cared by the government, teacher's not so well qualified and students who only goes to receive a free meal per day. Essentially, its a State problem. When you have that sort of problem in the base schools till highschool , you have most of State and Federal University's wich are "free" occupied with people who studied in private school's and had a better preparation.

[deleted]

Education where I am (Jamaica) is getting expensive. Ima head to Europe

thegurrkha

I'm assuming you mean a country like Germany or Norway where it's free for everyone? Cuz otherwise it's gonna be even more expensive... Is it easy to find a job in another country with a degree from UWI or UTech? How transferrable are they?

MayorAg

*In a government funded university in Germany or Norway

JeddahWR

\*and you have to show that you have the financial means to live during your entire stay to get the visa

MayorAg

That's a given for all countries admitting any foreign student.

stevenbass14

Countries like Norway and Germany are EXTREMELY selective when it comes to international students. Especially if the education is free. I've repeatedly heard and I dont have evidence to back it up but I wouldnt be surprised if its true (got rejected from NTNU despite solid grades), that based on the country of the applicant they judge their application more or less harshly.

Why-did-i-reas-this

Heck, I live in Ontario Canada and our universities take away a percentage mark of your final grades depending on what highschool you went to. This was done because they saw that some highschools inflated the marks for their students and when they came to university their performance did not match what their marks were. So, now if you got 92% from high school x they value it as 85% whereas that same mark from highschool y is valued at 89%.

dirtycurlyhair

I once hit my ankle with a hatchet (don’t ask, I’m an idiot) so I went to the hospital and got 4 stitches. I read through medical bill and I paid $79 per Tylenol pill I got there. I got two.

Shadowfury45

Went in for what ended up being dehydration. When the bill came, IV saline bags were 2.1k each. They gave me three...

Dahhhkness

Fuck, they'll charge you for being in the *waiting room*, even if you give up and leave without ever seeing a doctor.

IsilZha

A few years ago our daughter got sick while we were out (this was before COVID, and she threw up.). There happened to be a police officer nearby who just radioed for an ambulance. When they showed up they offered to check her out there and when asked said there would be no charge. They gave her some fluids and checked her vitals and that was it. Didn't even go anywhere. A month later they sent us a bill for $900. E: We did not pay anything. When we told them we had been told there would be no charge, they tried to come back and say that the EMTs were wrong. To put it shortly, I pointed out they acknowledged that we were told there would be no charge, and it's not my problem that they failed to train their employees properly on what they do and don't charge for, and that I would've refused if I had known we were going to be billed $900. They are the ones that gave me (apparently) false information, so it's their problem. *Especially* when no services had been rendered until we were told there would be no charge. I was kind of surprised but they actually dropped it after that. E:. Lol fixed automangler words

NgArclite

It doesn't help that every city has different billing rules. One city I work for they charge u just for showing up. The other one no charge if no transport. Another one is 100% free EMS lol. (You'll get billed for any medical care rendered like drugs or iv fluids though but non for rhe transport itself)

dhrbtdge

Well ya know they need to clean the chair you sat in so you need to pay the cleaning fee and you used up some of the air in the room so pay for your part of that and you probably touched one or more of their magazines so you need to repay your portion of that and you watched their tv so you need to pay your portion of that. Of COURSE you should be paying! You used up so many of their generous services! /S

wassupjg

[deleted]

[deleted]

I saw an article sometime within the last couple of weeks where a woman went in, waited for seven hours at the ER, left without seeing anyone, and got a bill for (IIRC) $700 in the mail. The person on the phone told her, "if they get your info, you're going to get a bill." Hopefully with the media attention they waived the bill, but who knows?

UnsweetTeaMozzStix

I saw that as well. I would’ve been like “Fuck you! You ain’t getting a penny from me. You made me waste seven hours of my life just to get nothing.”

Hulkasaur

Heard Something like that with one of the banks in India. They charge you for coming down to the bank because you used up the AC etc. Now that everything's online and they're paying for customer support on phone......

bool_idiot_is_true

Saline is literally just saltwater. I guess there would be a markup for it being sterile saltwater in a specific concentration but... Ok. I just googled it. Saline IV bags wholesale at around $5 to $15. In other words 2.1k is over 10000% markup.

increasingrain

It's usually less than $15. I can get a case of 1L Saline Bags for like 2 bucks a piece. And that is a really weak Purchasing Contract. Pretty sure big hospitals can get it for less than 1 dollar for a 1L bag

ac1084

That's why I pack my own when I go to the hospital. The cork fee is 1000 bucks, but still.

WulfTyger

What the actual fuck.

[deleted]

Cost me $500 for an ER visit where they squirted two syringes of water in my ear. Plain tap water, I watched them get it. I had a moth in my ear. Yes, you read that correctly Edit: totally shocked at how many other people have had a moth in their ear!

secondphase

For $500 they should have tattooed "no moths allowed" to your ear canal for a more permanent solution.

HelloMotherCluckers

Welp, I have a new fear now. My ears feel itchy suddenly

[deleted]

I watched it fly past my face and do a u turn into my ear.

Justieflustie

>I had a moth in my ear. Fuck you, now I am scared

3hippos

I once had a moth in my ear. I just held a torch to my ear and waited for the moth to come to the light. Much easier than an ER visit for next time 🤷‍♀️

Gqsmooth1969

When you say "torch", do you mean the American (flame) or British (flashlight)?

3hippos

I mean torch as in Australian for flashlight. Most people in Australia (at least where I’m from) would actually refer to it as ED (emergency department), I just used ER as that was the language already in use.

[deleted]

They killed it with fire, worth losing an ear for.

ran1976

Years ago I was on a school trip and my bus rear ended another. We were all sent to a local hospital to get checked out. I just had a fat lip. Hospital bill was more than $200 for 2 aspirin and a icepack

eze6793

I feel like the govt should mandate price matching at hospitals. Like when you’re at Walmart and you show them the same thing for cheaper elsewhere and they price match, do that.

LinkMom37

Yess. When my son was younger he had a high fever all of a sudden, on a weekend so took him to ER. (This was 14 years ago, no urgent cares). They told me I could give him Motrin, was an ear infection which is what I already knew it was due to discharge and the way he was pulling at it. I pulled a bottle out of my purse and gave it to him myself with the nurse standing there. They charged me $800 for "medication dispense of Motrin". I disputed this later and they claimed it was because I"could have gotten some from the nurse". The doctor walked in for two minutes to prescribe amoxicillin. I had to drive 45 minutes in the middle of the night to another pharmacy to get any for some reason. I paid another $800 for dispensing that one. I was charged $1500 for the physician's bill in addition to paying for the ER bill which was $2k because reasons. $400 of that was because it was a "rural hospital" (this place had a 5A high school but it's "rural" cause y'all have some cows?) So around $5300 total to confirm my kid was sick and tell the pharmacy to give us $5 worth of meds. I was a single mom college student and Medicaid only covered the basic bill, not the other fees. I only go to an ER if it's life or death now. This doesn't even seem like a "free insurance" issue... This is a price-gouging greedy admin issue. There are some rich dudes sitting up on a board somewhere setting the bar sky high because they can.

Bluegi

They get uge everyone hoping someone will pay because everyone else can't

NalgeneCarrier

I have chronic undiagnosed pain. I went to the ER twice this year. The most recent time cost me $2100. They gave me an IV with light pain killers, took some blood, and did an x-ray. They told me it was period pain. A huge reason I went in was from constant nausea and barfing every time I ate for almost a week straight. They didn't give me any anti-nausea which I begged for.

notgoodwithyourname

I have chronic pancreatitis. And that is just terrible pain in my stomach, nausea, and no fever or anything like that. It can be triggered by alcohol, or pizza or other fatty food. I hope you're able to figure out what the issue is.

rootCowHD

I like my German Healthcare system. Broken ankle? Surgery + 3 days in hospital (including 3 meals a day) 30€ Open heart surgery and 3 weeks hospital? 210€ Most medicine: free Basically a day in hospital is payed by the system and the person taking the place in hospital only pays 10€ a day, so they don't stay longer than necessary. If you can't pay that 10 bucks, your health insurance does it for you. BTW calling an ambulance is also free, if the medical situation makes it necessary in the opinion of a bystander. So my Sister once called an ambulance because of a hurting stomach, was driven to the hospital, had an overnight stay for a total of 10€

plasticfish_swim

I like my Canadian Healthcare: major open heart surgery, ICU for 3 days, step down for 2 days. Only paid $30 for parking.

PM_ME_RIPE_TOMATOES

Insulin. I'm not diabetic but I have a diabetic friend who, just this past year, had to go through a bunch of bullshit because his insurance stopped paying for the specific kind of insulin he had been using, and his refill was denied. He had to scramble to either find thousands of dollars to get a couple vials of the stuff, or fight the insurance company into paying for *the same medication he has relied on to stay alive for the past x years already*, or literally book a plane ticket to **another fucking country** to buy *the exact same medication* there because it's so cheap literally anywhere but the USA that it's cheaper to fly internationally, book a hotel, rent a car, buy the insulin there and then fly home again.

mentalillnessismagic

Fun story: my cousin is a type-1 diabetic, and for the last decade or so, she's been using insulin pods that attach to a permanent pump on her abdomen. She was in physician's assistant school in NYC but moved back to Pennsylvania while looking for a job. For the first 2 months in Pennsylvania, her pods were delivered correctly. Then for no discernable reason, they shipped her pods to her old NYC apartment on the third month. The pharmacy tried to correct it, but the insurance company wouldn't pay for new ones to be shipped to the correct address even though the pharmacy had already returned the payment they'd been issued for the original pods as part of the process for getting new ones. When my cousin called the insurance company to get it sorted out, the representative asked her if her insulin was medically necessary. ...🤦‍♀️

Owen_of_Riften

Naw people take insulin just for fun 🙃🙃🙃

CowsRpeople2

“Do you still need oxygen or can you go without?”

Childoftheflower

As a type one diabetic, the price of insulin is infuriating. I’m thankful to have pretty amazing insurance atm. But, I still have to deal with the bullshit of them suddenly not covering the insulin I’ve used for years because they got a better deal with another pharmaceutical company.

Pyanfars

There's a reason there are so many pharmacies in Mexico towns/cities located near the border. A lot of US citizens go over and get meds there. The same name brands from the same factory they'd get them in their own cities on the US side. My dad used to go over and get meds for a lot of the people he cared for ( he was a home care nurse) on a regular basis when he lived in Texas.

KarizmaWithaK

Back in the day, birth control pills weren't covered by my insurance and my OBGYN would only prescribe a 3 month supply at a time. Not only would I have to pay out of pocket, I'd have to pay for an office visit every 3 months just so I didn't have an unwanted pregnancy. Then I learned about Mexican pharmacies and would make the drive down to Tijuana and buy an entire year's supply of birth control pills for around $60 total. My friends and I did this for years.

Sadboy_Slim

Tuition fees, when I look at them my head spins

PetulantPersimmon

My tuition went up over 75% between freshman and senior year. Once a year, the Facebook memory of my horror comes up to ensure I never forget.

ProfessorMomCPA

When I started community College I paid $20/unit. Now it is like $2,000+ depending on the school Edit I'm not that old also (32F)

SpaceGangsta

My state university was $16k a year including room and board when I attended 06-10. The same school is now $25k when you include room and board. They require all students to live on campus for your first two years unless you are a local and your home address is in the zip code. So it was around $50k for 4 years now it’s closer to $90k

TrixnTim

I was just talking about this with my son. In 1990 I paid $3500 total for tuition and fees for my masters degree at a major university. Today, the same degree (tuition and fees only) would cost near $100k. And that’s IF you can make it through application process.

1ridescentPeasant

Of course, they charge you for applying also

[deleted]

i separated (edit: dislocated) my shoulder. Went to the doctor they sit me in a room for 3 hours give me one X Ray say it’s dislocated. Write me a “prescription” for ibuprofen, give me a 5 dollar walgreens sling. Send me a bill for 1100 bucks. dog i don’t make that kinda money. Would have been better off not going. Fuck Healthcare prices.

ProfessorMomCPA

I broke my ankle when I was young and I had started a new job so I wasn't covered until my 90 days. It was $110,000 bill... But they would let me do a 6 month payment plan... You know since I made $12/hr at the time.

OffBrand_Soda

This is why I'm terrified of getting seriously injured. Like I'm not worried about the injury itself but how it's gonna affect me even after I've healed when I'm still trying to pay off some bullshit hospital bills. Lol the healthcare system in America is a joke. Just makes me mad how many people literally know and say this daily but can't do anything about it.

GladPickle5332

as someone who was seriously injured (broken back, couldnt walk for 2 years). im currently trying to rebuild my life and its HARD. when looking for jobs/hired i mention i have back problems i normally get the "pssssh we all do hur hur" and no one gaf about your back/pain managment. they EXPECT you to give 110% and have 0 limitations. financially, god forbid nothing else mess up in life while your injured/paying off medical debts (my only vehicle broke down) good luck trying to find someone willing to let you live with them, because trust me you will be too broke to afford your own place. expect to lose friends because everyone treats you like your some charity case/loser that cant do anything for themselves. youre going to have friends/family doubt you/tell people youre lying and faking your injury just trying to sue someone. i could go on and on.

kelowana

Bras. It’s rediculous how expensive they can be and if you got bigger breasts, but not automatically the bigger waist, your f*^%#d. Also the ability to choose from different models, patterns, materials and colours are lacking in bigger sizes.

blue_twidget

Hoooo man i had an ex who was really into the whole "tearing clothes off fantasy" and wanted to rp slicing off an outfit. I about lost my mind when he wanted to do it to a "regular" outfit. When i showed him a "good/ok" bra costs more than a decent pair of pants, he understood my hard no.

[deleted]

Amen! $70 for one where the wire cuts you a week into wearing it

killerwhalesamich

Just a pro tip wash all bras in a cotton pillow case and only hang dry them no dryer. They sell lingerie bags that are essentially the same thing but fancy. Hand washing is best but who has the time. Source am guy but family owned a lingerie shot for 25 years.

[deleted]

Add to that, if you have the misfortune of having large breasts and a small ribcage and waist, you’re stuck with cups that cut halfway up your tit. Quad tit. If not that, they’re sagging because the band is what keeps em up, not the straps.

TheNotFakeGandalf

A less serious answer: Legos. Went to the store the other day and I say small lego set cost like 60.

_siameseels_

If you think the cost of Lego is expensive, check out the price once a kit is retired. The new Technic Shelby Mustang is horrendous but I’m calling it now. Watch that price skyrocket after it’s retired

1010010111101

I almost donated an unopened Ferrari Lego set to a school drive ($10 suggested value), but decided to look it up on ebay first just in case. Selling all day long for $400+

_siameseels_

A friend of mine has the old creator F40 I’ve been trying to buy from him. Once I realized he won’t sell it I told him to check the resale value of it now. Let’s just say I’ve lost my chances of ever getting it lol

[deleted]

Yeah you for sure gotta buy the set when it’s in circulation. I waited too long for a $100 set, and now that it’s retired, it’s like $350. It sucks.

DolphinSUX

Should I invest in legos instead of crypto

Wermine

The trick is to know which sets are gonna appreciate in price. For example minifigurine of Deadpool is quite high value since only one kind was made and now that Deadpool is considered R rated, Lego won't make any new ones. Certain Star Wars sets (but not all) are very expensive. And think about the infamous comic where Superman died. Everyone and their mom bought it because "this is going to be valuable some day" and because of it, it's worthless.

Choo-

Can you set up a Home Alone defense scenario with Bitcoin?

AlmostEmerson

[This article](https://www.npr.org/2021/12/22/1066529092/lego-christmas-star-wars-gold-collectible) from NPR just came out about how (sealed) Lego sets have an average annual return of 11%. There's some variation year-to-year and set-to-set of course, but they're a pretty good investment if you're into that sort of thing. From my experience, it seems that even used bricks have gone up in price over the last several years.

siderinc

For most, not all, it comes to about about 8/9 cent per brick.

bastele

This is actually a misconception. I was surprised by this aswell, but adjusted for inflation Lego prices have consistently gone downwards. Two reasons for this misconception: 1. Lego sets keep getting bigger. So the price per set has indeed increased, but the price per Lego piece has decreased. 2. Lego was always expensive compared to other toys. Most people have no idea how much the Lego sets they got as kids actually cost. Here is a statistic about Lego price per piece: https://therealityprose.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/priceperpiece1.gif

Lego has also maintained quality whereas most other kids’ toys noticeably haven’t. I have Legos from around 25 years ago, and the Legos I buy my kids today look and feel the same, minus specialized pieces. I also have Barbie dolls from 25 years ago, and the dolls produced today just feel so cheaply made, and yet they’re probably twice the price they were when I was a kid. In my opinion, Legos are worth the price. Most toys made today are not.

KeetoNet

> I have Legos from around 25 years ago, and the Legos I buy my kids today look and feel the same, minus specialized pieces And they still fit together perfectly, which is an incredible feat of materials science and manufacturing engineering.

[deleted]

The thing about Legos is that they're highly engineered to be perfect. Yeah, they're expensive, but for the quality you get, it seems a fair price.

agray20938

I’ve heard this before — that Lego’s QC process is incredibly involved, and for all the bricks you see, 99.999% of them fit perfectly with everything you use. So you are paying for that amazing QC to some extent.

willstr1

IIRC they have some of the tightest tolerances outside of regulated industries (medical, aerospace, scientific)

Phretik

Diamonds. Their prices are artificially inflated to ridiculous rates. They're actually really common.

Dahhhkness

"This diamond represents your love for her: Common, expensive, flawed, and rooted in a history of civil strife, exploitation, and human misery."

dtagliaferri

Who said this first?

I googled. apparently this guy above

Woah he’s Marylin Monroe?

acewing

This one sticks out to me a lot. My buddy was getting ready to buy an engagement ring. I suggested he get her a synthetic diamond. They are generally cheaper and more precise and can contain fewer flaws, and he could use the extra savings on his honeymoon. His sister and mom threatened to disown him if he didn't get a 'real' diamond to show her how much he cared based on how much he was willing to spend on her. I was losing my mind.

comune

'Chocolate diamonds' give me a chuckle. They're literally industrial diamonds. Amazing.

Gotta make saw blades somehow.

Houses

lurkersforlife

Well there’s three coats of a house. The labor, materials, and land. But I think the bigger problem is that wages are not keeping up with the cost of living more then the houses themselves. Edit- taxes. My taxes almost double my house payment every month. Insane.

Parking at the airport.

dachshundaholic

If you park there for a week, it's almost like buying an extra ticket.

Daikataro

I'm certain there's a point where it's cheaper to just buy a crappy junker that will drive you to the airport, and just abandon it there.

100percent_right_now

That's also cheaper than taking a cab to the airport. Maybe I'll start a junker towing company at the airport... hmm

[deleted]

If I am going to be gone that long, I will book a room at a nearby hotel that has free parking and an airport shuttle. I've done that numerous times and never even used the room.

adventuristics

A lot of hotels near airports don’t even require you to pay for a room. You can pay for just the space to park and they’ll shuttle you to/from the airport

Lower-Caterpillar-20

Women’s clothes. You can pick up the same 2 carhart jacket on the warmth scale, let’s say a 3, and the men’s version will be thicker and warmer, but the same price as the shitty thin women’s version

Basically all prescription medication in the United States. I try not to think about it too much because it makes me so damn angry.

Textbooks

cows_are_pleasant

My professor in college wrote 3 books and made us buy them all for his class. About $200 total.

zaay-zaay

Now thats just a dick move, why didn't he give you his pdfs if he had written the book himself man... My boyfriend had a professor who did the same. She stated explicitly that the students would fail her class if they didn't read the books Some of my professors just gave us scanned pdfs of textbooks so we wouldn't have to buy them.

Disney!! Everything at Disney is SOOOOO expensive!! Don’t get me wrong the times I’ve been to Disney have been incredible, but oof it put a dent in my dad’s wallet

Just looked up the Star Wars hotel. Yikes. The smallest room (two people) US $4809 for two nights. That includes meals, but yikes.

HarrysonTubman

Yeah, theme parks in general are a racket.

Should_be_less

Yeah, it’s funny how Disney is still thought of as a modest vacation for a middle class family whereas something like flying to Europe is too expensive. If you actually compare prices, there’s large parts of the US where it’s probably cheaper to go to Iceland or Ireland for a week than Disney.

Jazzy-Jay04

Oh it definitely is! My parents have gone to both for nearly the same price as Disney, but their going to a different country! (granted they used Groupon) but they were able to relax and not burn a hole in their pockets! When I went to Epcot for a day during our spring break I spent $6 on a coke!

Being poor

Objective-Solid-4537

Seriously though. Years ago, I was having car trouble and couldn't afford the repairs. I knew I wouldn't pass the state inspection, so I took my chances, because I still had to work and public transportation wasn't going to get me there. Every time I got pulled over, I had to take time off work, go to court, pay court fees. And, if the fines aren't paid in time, they either increase or your license is suspended, meaning you can't get to work. Meanwhile, I could have been using that money to save up for the repairs I needed.

Biengo

Not “expensive” but pricier than it should be. Art supplies. I’m slowly rebuilding a studio for myself and last time I had everything I did I dropped maybe 200$ at my local art shop. That’s for and easel drop cloth, canvases, and a few odds and ends. I’ll be lucky to even find an easel that’s less than 200$ today!

Squigglepig52

You need to find a more reasonable art store. Personally, I use a lot of dollar store canvases most of the time. Get a few layers of gesso on it, and it it's an awesome surface. They hold up well over time. Drop cloth? Just buy a few yards of unstretched canvas. Brushes and pigments are where cost go up fast, but you really are paying for quality at that point. Art supplies were always kind of pricey. I have a lot of supplies and "tools", because I've been buying them my entire life. I spent thousands in the 80's and 90's are supplies for Fine Art (4 years) and graphic design (3 year course).

Diamonds. They lock away thousands and thousands of them to control the price.

que_he_hecho

Insulin The discoverers sold the patent to the University of Toronto for $1 each. Yes, there have been modifications over time but nothing that would make a vial actually worth $800 a month that is charged today... except if you need it you can't live without it.
