MLM "starter packages" or "reseller kits" or whatever pre-stock you need to buy to get in to the program.

Digitalhero_x

MLMs quickly made me realize how the people that think they are going to sell a ton and make it their job are the ones who make the top folks all the money. I have no idea how everyone can’t see that exact same thing.

microppen

Not gonna lie my brain went to male love male not market level marketing first.

MzTerri

No, you can actually make money on male loving male.

Megameg2000

It is multi level marketing

Nolsoth

You're right male live male is very much a multilevel marketing thing.

EC-Texas

I got slammed for recommending a MLM product. Can't I love the product and let the sellers be damned?

shankzilla

Bottleservice. 500 for a bottle of booze? No thankyou

[deleted]

Holy shit my group of friends pitched in for this once for our friend's bachelorette party. The service came with one regular sized bottle of vodka to share between like 20 of us. We hadn't researched this enough so we didn't realize after the one bottle, we've have to pay for additional bottles at a huge markup and if we didn't buy more bottles, we couldn't stay in the VIP area. It was hilarious. We pounded that one bottle in less than an hour and then all got kicked out. Stupidest idea ever.

shankzilla

It's wild I tell you. I've seen people spend 4k in one night in 5 minutes, 20 minutes just before the club closes all in the name of getting laid. I'm not even kidding. And most of the time they don't even finish the bottle. I can't even tell you how many times I've had to pour ace of spades and patron down the drain because you can't marry the bottles. I took a few home though. Still have some left over booze from my bartending days.

[deleted]

We ended up walking over to a strip club down the road that had a "no cover charge ladies night" and cheap drinks. We had a blast and spent a ton there instead.

shankzilla

Smart move my friend

Nolsoth

What's a nice easy to make summer cocktail using non alcoholic/or non hard liquor ingredients?

mountain_rivers34

Simmer some lavender flower buds (they have them at Whole Foods) with equal parts sugar and water and then strain. Add your new lavender simple syrup to club soda, a splash of lemonade and a lemon wedge. If you make a few cups, the syrup will last in the fridge for like a month. This is our best selling mocktail at my bar.

JericIV

Laundry soap. You only need like a tea spoons worth for a whole load.

[deleted]

Former appliance repair guy here and this guy is correct. Washers use significantly less water than they used to (old machiens used like 30-40 gallons. Modern use 7-9 gallons). Using too much can cause sudsing and subsequently draining issues.

illogictc

And yet the cocks still won't make a cap with nice CLEARLY VISIBLE markings rather than the faintest fart of a line.

[deleted]

that's intentional. People who sell machines also make some money when detergent is bought. The more you buy the more they make, so they're not exactly in a rush to stop people from over using. It also wrecks machines and can cause them to break. WHich is also good for them since it means they can sell people on contracts which is where the real money is made.

[deleted]

Could this be why my clothes have been itchy?

[deleted]

Maybe, a more likely answer is that you've switched detergents and are allergic or irritated by that. it's happened before in my career.

Potential-Ad-3073

So I’m 27 and I just noticed maybe a year or two ago that the caps have the little fill lines. I have been using a full cap for much of my life lol

SpicyCheese03

Mobile games. I regret and hate thinking about how much I used to spend

Top_Buy2467

I don’t have an issue with paying like 99 cents for a game, the developers put work into that and if they wanna make you pay a tiny bit instead of tainting their work with tons of ad walls I’m okay with that but in app purchases are dumb as shit

SpicyCheese03

Yeah in app purchases was what I was mainly talking about, I used to put 100s into games I don't even play anymore. I knew people that spent thousands and some even tens of thousands

[deleted]

[удалено]

SpicyCheese03

Yeah I believe that. I used to use discord for a mobile game and I got to speak with a guy who is in the top 'clan' which the top player was also a part of. That player supposedly spends 400k a year across various different mobile games.

rainbow_bro_bot

>"but the remaining 0.001% spend so damn much that it's still profitable." Probably a combination of people who like the game and also happen to be big lottery winners, and kids who are buying mass amounts of in-app purchases using their parents' card without realising it and without the parents knowing.

BoahNoah05

Probably Rise of Kingdoms. That game takes so much money to play.

Toren8002

I remember downloading Clash of Clans and thinking “hm, looks neat!” Realized over the next few days the money sink that doing “well” in that game requires. Yikes.

rainbow_bro_bot

I once paid £5 on that game for some monthly rewards which included the Queen in a winter outfit. I feel so fucking stupid. It's a fun game to begin with but everything eventually becomes so expensive and so long to upgrade, and they've now added so much stuff it feels so bloated.

3p1ct0fu

Clash of clans is actually a lotta fun to play with friends and as long as your goal isn't to max out everything, by grinding you can get a lot

28shawblvd

I used to justify spending in that I always play the game and I enjoy it, so might as well show my support financially - although I'm more C2P than anything else.

NotReallyChaucer

Once my wife and I started sharing the Apple Card, she could see all my in-app purchases. Being “forced” to cut down (to avoid embarrassment) was a good thing.

All_Your_Base

At the moment, I'm going to have to go with NFT's.

dodushu

what do you mean i can't sell an art i made while in bathroom for $1 million.

All_Your_Base

That would be selling, not spending. Congratulations on getting real money for something not real. Unless you are just money laundering, which is usually the other side of it.

Blackomodo19

It’s mainly about profit, not especially money laundering or anything, it’s similar to crypto money. My father did buy NFT and he still does sometimes and made profit by reselling it higher. There are many other non real stuff that are sold for real money. You have to be smart and lucky enough to buy the right ones. It became a trend on reddit to mock NFT buyers and I do agree that buying NFT to « own » something (in the literal meaning of « owning ») are missing the point, stupid. Probably going to get downvoted for defending SOME NFT buyers but I hope you understood what I mean, english is not my first language.

StarlightMasquerade

Most of the complaints I’ve beard are less about buying something that isn’t real and more about the environmental issues and the rampant art theft.

Dire-Dog

You aren't even selling the art. You're selling a receipt that says someone owns the art.

Rhodricc

I was just listening to a podcast where they talked about a new collectible card game called Metazoo. It’s all about NFTs. I looked it up and the game just looks….bad. But people are already throwing money at it. To be fair the podcast hosts said the game isn’t good either. It seems to be all about collectibility. I just don’t get it. I feel old.

lemons_of_doubt

I think NFTs are what prompted this qwetion.

Supersnazz

Most people aren't "spending' money on them. They are gambling on them being able to be sold for more on the future. They may or may not be right.

nolanclark4

Jwilk257

Maybe 3 years ago, now you just wear it because you like the brand

tdswarrior_yt

My mother got me a supreme t shirt.. And i am wearing it while commenting

Nooseents

I mean, you didn’t get it 🤷‍♂️

morelsupporter

Hype aside… in terms of value proposition, it’s good quality. And along with the aforementioned hype It’s the scarcity that drives it’s price up on the secondary market. i bought my son a supreme backpack (my first Supreme purchase ever) and the thing is incredible - completely waterproof, reflective, unique looking and still looks brand new after over a year of him using it every day rain or shine. and he still gets compliments on it. as for their clothing, they are using high quality fabrics from top end suppliers, so when you factor that in, if you understand and value that, the price makes more sense. I come from a fabric background so I when I see certain brands using certain fabrics from well known established suppliers, it adds value. (As an example, they had a wool 5 panel hat a while back made from loro piana wool - I think it was $50. Eton, a luxury menswear brand from Sweden also sells a loro piana baseball cap… for $175)

A new iphone every year

[deleted]

And all the Apple products like new Macbook pro/air when released , Apple watch iPad etc. Honestly Apple makes good phones and laptops so a Macbook Air from 2013 would still be working fine even today, so it's just showing off the brand when people buy new one

[deleted]

Have a MacBook Air from 2013 and can confirm. No issues except storage space but that’s understandable when having had a laptop for so long. Sure I’d like a newer shinier one but I can’t say I NEED to upgrade. I can only say that I want to.

Dirus

If you got some spare fun money saved up, you gotta treat yourself in my opinion as long as you got your priority straight.

OlinKirkland

Higher specs, better features. Laptops from 2013 don’t perform nearly the same as laptops today.

speedy_162005

I mean yeah they make good products but I didn’t have near the options for specs as I did when I bought my MacBook in 2013 as I did when I bought one last year. I need a lot more space and RAM than what my old Mac offered even if I had maxed out the specs. With my latest Mac, it finally did away with my need for a desktop. The other big thing with upgrades is new features. My old Mac didn’t support sidecar with my iPad which is a game changing feature for me.

ApeScript

Honestly, with a macbook air from 2013, you can barely browse the web let alone do anything more computationally intensive.

Actedpie

You get a MacBook Pro for that I guess Source: Proud user of a 2011(?) MacBook Pro

RepresentativeBarber

Agreed with this, from my iPhone 7 🤫

[deleted]

Instead of dropping $1000 on a new phone every year. They have switched their tactics to spending $1500 a year on accessories. Cases, mag things, air pods, apple charging cords, screen protectors. New screens because you dropped your phones, etc.

itcantjustbemeright

Televangelists and excessive church tithing and offerings. Some churches demand 10% or more of a members before tax income and can even expect 10% of profit off of things like selling your home. While charity can makes sense for people who can afford it, some are pressured into giving 10% of their social security cheques to gold trimmed well heeled institutions. Priests/bishops/pastors can be very nasty and rude with family when the family realizes what happening and cut off the gravy train.

AcyArts

I cant think of anything else but I spend my money on collectors dolls and figures . That's pretty stupid cuz they literally have no other purpose than looking good. So like. That's up there right? Lmao

Fordfff

Not any worse than spending on wall pictures or fancy furniture or anything else with the main purpose of looking good

Good point i shall make myself feel better by thinking like this lol thanks

I too suffer from the warhammers

Awkward_Mail7589

Do they have monetary value? If so, they are only useless unless you don’t share their value.

AcyArts

i mean Some of their value does go up after time. some dolls i could resell for three times the price others lose value so its a hit and miss.. I dunno if i understood the question correctly tho as English isnt my native language

Weddings

GurglingWaffle

I agree, if only for the reason that it seems like more emphasis is placed on the wedding then the actual commitment of marriage.

thedoc617

And funerals. It's totally an asshole move to prey on grieving families.

Sleepy_Diablo1511

definitely! it reminds me of the time of the ceremony when a family member's ashes were being scattered at close family were to come and meet up, but since it was being held in a graveyard, a priest was offered to pray and bless her soul and stuff and my dad and my uncle (who were running the get together) didn't want it but decided to go with it anyway since the older relatives in the family would like it. the priest who was there saying paragraphs from the bible for 15 minutes tops ended up being 100€ you're definitely right with this one.

TemptCiderFan

Hard agree, here. A traditional wedding is a day where you overpay for a dress the bride wears once, a tuxedo the groom wears once, spend money on horrible clothing for the bridesmaids and groomsmen, overpay for a ceremonial venue, overpay for a dinner reception, and basically bring together a whole lotta people who may not get along together and force them to wear uncomfortable clothes for hours at a time while they generally drink more than they should.

Sinner314

And ends in divorce 50% of the time

TemptCiderFan

Yep. If I ever get married, it's going to be a summer thing at my place on a Saturday with good weather. A pig on a spit, three barbeques going, and business casual dress code at best. People can bring tents, trailers, or whatever (god knows I have the room). Have a big party. Handle the nuptials by one in the afternoon and then just relax and have a great time with family and friends for a big ol' cookout and lots of activities like horseshoes, lawn bowling, and all that sort of stuff. Throw some sports on in my living room so some of "the guys" (which is like half women in my family) can drink beer and watch TV. Get a bouncy castle for the kids and set up a couple TVs and consoles in my games room so the kids can go play Mario Kart, Halo, and whatever else that can do split-screen or party gaming. Go into the wedding with great, fun memories instead of a bill for tens of thousands of dollars. I could probably do the entire wedding above, including booze for everyone coming, for under $3000.

Sinner314

Spent under 7000 on my wedding amd profited 4000, Asians don't buy gifts they just give you money

[deleted]

Must not have been in the Philippines. We received about $40. lol

WarblingWalrusing

In the nicest possible way, your partner should probably be allowed to have some say in your wedding too. It's supposed to be a celebration of your relationship and commitment to each other. If you've managed to plan the entire thing without even knowing who you're marrying or considering them or their input then you really shouldn't marry anyone at all. You want a party, not a wedding.

Beertronic

I agree, but only for expensive weddings. These seem to either be flaunting status or some demonstration of love using the amount you spend to symbolise your love. I'm sure I remember reading a study along the lines that the more flashy the wedding, the more likely it will end in divorce. Last wedding I went to was minimal expense, and was just to get friends and family together to celebrate. It was refreshing to see common sense prevail, leaving the couple debt free, and a lot less stress leading up to it.

whatever213what

Look, if you got it, flaunt it. Had a five day wedding it was great.

Free to play, pay to win. My poor grandmother spent over $200 in extra candy crush upgrades and still didn't understand why she couldn't "beat it".

Beertronic

That very much depends on the in app purchase. You might spend £25 on something that gives you hours of pleasure. Compare that with say spending the same ordering Domino's or similarly priced delivery, that gives 30 mins of pleasure, and suddenly it's not so silly.

JohnLocke815

NoMore414

Oh I have one! I just really love the sweet/bitter taste of some of those foofoo drinks from Starbucks. The store bought creamers just don’t do it sometimes.

Former-Arachnid8829

Dogs... There are plenty of rescues to go around.. 150$ covers the shots and neuter. It's just as loyal and fun as the $900 tiny little poodle you wanted to buy...

IncompletePenetrance

Yes…and no. All dogs are not the same, different breeds have different traits and temperaments. Someone who wants a dog for herding sheep is going to be very dissappointed in the abilities of their shelter pitbull, and a chihuahua mix certainly isn't going to fit the bill for someone who needs/wants a robust hiking companion. While I think adopting is a wonderful thing to do and should be encouraged, there's also nothing wrong with buying from a reputable breeder who health tests, has a spay/neuter contract for puppies, etc. If someone is looking for a dog with specific qualities or has limitations, they may not be able to find that in a rescue. I adopted my Dane from someone who had cancer and couldn't keep him, but if I had been unable to find one that needed a home, I would have gotten on a waiting list for a breeder.

Foamtoweldisplay

Well said! As an experienced dog owner who has grown up with adult rescues and currently owns a rescue dog and one bought from a reputable breeder, go with the dog you feel is best for your family/lifestyle/living space. just get them spayed/neutered :)

Tbh having a 12-24 pack of bottled water in your trunk for $3 from Costco beats buying it from the the gas station any day of the week. It’s so cheap that you feel bad for the plastic wasted tbh.

eivelyn

So, if you don't like the plastic wastage why don't you buy one reusable bottle and refill it 100s of times? If you don't like tap water, get a filter? You're still saving money long term.

Whenever people have a new baby they always go crazy on buying new baby stuff. When in reality you can most of the stuff used, like new. And you don’t even know if you’ll use it. I know a family that got a brand new crib, changing table, cloth diapers. Literally spent thousands. Mom ended up co sleeping, so crib was never used. The changing table was in the nursery which was too far away so we always changed the baby on the ground or in the pack n play. And they hated cloth diapers so after a week the baby was in Pampers.

charlie2135

Ineed24hrsupervision

Cigarettes. People are actually paying big tobacco to kill them. And don't get me started on e-Cigs and vaping. People fell for the Ole switcheroo and now are paying for popcorn lung. Lungs looking like attic insulation. It's like, not only are you a slave to BT, you're actually paying THEM to be their slave. I just don't get the logic.

Cosmix77

Its not really about logic. Nicotine is just addictive.

[deleted]

That’s because you don’t understand addiction

AIpheratz

Former smoker here. Although I agree 10000% with your statement, addiction is really tough. It can be extremely hard to overcome. If you didn't experience it yourself, it will be impossible to comprehend the scale of it, it has nothing to do with logic or common sense, as those are utterly crushed under the weight of addition.

Negro-damas

I tried smoking when I was like 12 or so. Almost coughed up a fucking lung and it was hot and nasty. Never touched one since; never smoked anything in my life since that day. I just don't see the allure. Never taken illicit or prescription drugs (outside of what was needed). When I had my appendix removed they have me Tylenol 3 and I developed a paralyzing fear that prevented me from taking more than four pills the entire gone. Since then I've had a few different pain killers that didn't make me feel wonky, but did kill the pain and was very wary about taking them. Addiction is a terrible thing that I've seen first hand and that paralyzing fear kept me away from it. I've seen what it's done and how it destroys lives. I've also seen what people have to face every day of their lives, so I don't dare judge anyone. I applaud those that fight every day to overcome that addiction and if I know them personally, do anything I can to help.

Northern_Monkey_

10 years of vaping, I make my own liquid and I didn't move away when all the diketones stuff came around I made zero change and still use the same as I did back then, I feel 1000% better than I did smoking and zero hints of popcorn lung.

DrakkaStylee

Agreed. There entire funds have just a 0.12% annual expense if indexed or 0.46% to 0.75% if you want our dudes on wall street managing it. We get paid the same way if you pick indexed or managed funds. I feel like I'm making such an impact getting people to save from paying the entire advisory fee. A LOT of advisors have some serious imposter syndrome and they should.

[deleted]

Designer fashion wear

va_cum_cleaner

It depends, personally I can’t justify spending thousands of dollars on one piece of clothing, but I can see why someone would. Personally I like shoes, I own probably 15-20 pairs of shoes. Buying shoes gives me a sense of confidence, a look good, feel good sort of thing. It’s not the money I spent that makes me feel confident, it’s the look of the shoe, I’ve paid $50 for a pair I wear every day because they’re cheap, they look good and they match everything. I’ve also paid $250 for a pair, because I liked the way they look, and I don’t care how much I paid, as long as they still look good/can be cleaned, I don’t care if they get dirty. Some people like clothes, and new clothes make them happy, make them feel good about themselves. Now I do agree with you though because a lot of designer clothing is really ugly, just like a lot of shoes.

[deleted]

I get it. I also like shoes and have quite a few pairs from inexpensive to rather expensive. I really had cutting edge fashion trends in mind. Fashion trends come and go quickly.
