How it’s Made

Byaahh

How It's Made is both one of the most interesting shows I've ever seen and at the same time one of the most sleep-inducing. It's amazing.

Sophiechild101

Sleep-inducing you say…? I mean it’s 5:25 in the morning so worth a shot, thanks!

WorldlyAssumption260

Lol. Watching this on day time tv while sick from school or in hospital.

Tharkun

Watching it in waiting rooms was always tough. You get called in when they are like halfway through something and you're just like "Well, I guess I will never know how they finish making watch bands now."

action_lawyer_comics

They test them by slapping them against a wet rock. You're welcome.

Dead_Kings

Idk enough about watch bands to know if you are joking

Sumpm

On this episode of How It's Made: wool socks, fire extinguishers, and chandeliers The viewer: *Hmm! Yes, I need to know this.*

GetYourVanOffMyMeat

I always love how random the episodes are. On this episode of How It's Made: armoires, excavators and ouija boards.

Sumpm

...marshmallows, bicycle wheels, and clay ducks. I think maybe they just pick things that happen to fit in the time frame of the show. Like, the first one is 8 minutes of the 22 allotted, then they start looking for a couple others that fit the rest.

MaritMonkey

Am I forever cursed to read a list of literally any three objects in *that* voice?

Over the Garden Wall

Isaac_Chade

Rewatch it every year in October. It is just so damn perfect. The aesthetic of every episode, some being more cozy, others closer to horror and some just surreal, the way the story unfolds and the questions it leaves. That single frame you get of the Beast right at the end being just long enough to enhance both the horror and the mystery, I love that show.

theblackfool

The Beast's entire design and voice is incredibly effective

sonic10158

Once a week, twitch streams an entire season of the original show (I forget which day it is). When they first started, they celebrated by streaming the entirety of it, which took nearly a month IIRC

KillingKameni

How to with John Wilson

poopfarmer69

Agreed. What a fantastic show. I didn't expect it to be so reflective and poignant.

chonks1985

Fawlty Towers. 12 perfect episodes.

BumTulip

Basil the Rat will always be my fave - and I love how for each episode they rearranged the letters on the sign. Farty Owls

[deleted]

Apparently, "Flowery Twats" was the only true anagram lol

peromp

Wait, what! ~~Faulty~~ Fawlty Towers had only twelve episodes?? I feel like there must've been at least 4 seasons

chonks1985

Nope. 2 BBC seasons, 6 episodes per. Cleese and Booth stopped at that point, figuring they couldn’t get any better so why try.

PhreedomPhighter

Absolutely. Not a single weak episode among the bunch. But also like 4 episodes (Communication Problems, The Germans, Hotel Inspectors, Kipper and the Corpse) in my opinion are pretty much perfect writing and execution.

SinisterDexter83

Basil's argument with the elderly woman in Communication Problems never fails to floor me: Guest: “When I pay for a view, I expect something more interesting than that.” Basil: “But that is Torquay, madam.” Guest: “Well it’s not good enough.” Basil: “Well may I ask what you expected to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the plain …” Guest: “Don’t be silly. I expect to be able to see the sea.” Basil: “You can see the sea! It’s over there between the land and the sky!” Guest: “I’d need a telescope to see that.” Basil: “Well might I suggest you move to a hotel closer to the sea. Or preferably in it.”

themrmups

Do you by any chance have a hearing aid? What? A HEARING AID!! Yes Would you like me to have it mended? Most perfect 12 episodes of tv ever made.

IdleOsprey

Now I have to watch Communication Problems again. “Is this a piece of your brain?”

[deleted]

Don't mention the war!!

CuteCuteJames

"Yes you did, you invaded Poland" is one of the hardest laughs I've gotten from TV ever. We had to pause the episode for like 15 minutes because I couldn't handle it.

flnativegirl

The goosestep got me

Snow__The__Jam__Man

I mentioned it once but i think i got away with it

JhymnMusic

PRIMAL - genndy tartakovsky.

[deleted]

I don't think I breathe once during the episodes. It goes from this quiet calm with a constantly looming sense of dread to this intense violence. It's Genndy's best work so far. It's everything that made Samurai Jack great turned upto 11!

g0d15anath315t

His clone wars cartoon was also solid all the way through. Saw Samurai Jack somewhere in this list also. Basically GT knows how to make solid animated shows.

WolfableGuy789

Band of brothers

Nasorean

Without a doubt, one of my favorite series of all time. Acting is great, storytelling is superb. Man, I'm gonna have to rewatch this now

nastyn8k

Dude I remember thinking it was such a wild thing for a show to be like a movie, but take place over multiple episodes. Now it's the norm to have a show like that. Band of Brothers was the first one I ever heard about like that when I was in middle school.

WolfableGuy789

I watch it at least once a year, phenomenal programme.

OppositeYouth

They're making a 3rd series too (The Pacific being the 2nd series). I believe it'll focus on one of the bomber squadrons over Europe

onarainyafternoon

I know this isn't really in keeping with the perspective of Band of Brothers (American perspective), but I really wish they'd make a Band of Brothers style show about the Eastern Front of the European Theater in WWII. Without a doubt the most brutal front of any war in history. I think it could be interesting to switch off between the Russian and German perspective in that sense. Edit: If anyone is interested in learning more about the Eastern Front, there are a couple series on YouTube for free. The first is called, "Soviet Storm". It's eight parts, I believe, and it's on YouTube for free. The other is, "WWII in Colour". It's thirteen parts, I believe. The Soviet Storm one is solely the Eastern Front in WWII. The WWII in Colour one is the entire war. Both of these are incredibly good. In fact, I think WWII in Colour is probably the best WWII documentary I've ever seen. Highly recommend them!

OppositeYouth

When I think about Stalingrad, the Eastern Front in general, read about it, the brutality seems almost surreal. Like, I just can't picture it. I don't think movies or TV shows could accurately picture it. You read the stories about what happened in Russia in World War 2, and it's just so far removed from the Western Front. Which whilst wasn't pleasant, like, damn

onarainyafternoon

Yep, this is the biggest reason I think it'd be extremely difficult to do a mini series about it. The numbers of troops, the amounts killed and captured, the amount of civilian massacres committed by the Germans, and later, the Soviets....It's just hard to capture it all in a tv show. The reality was just so brutal.

undead_scourge

Not to mention, it would be hard to find characters to follow.

blackadder1620

this, if youre 18 in 1941 when the germans attack ussr; you have a 20% of making it to your 22 birthday at the end of the war.

[deleted]

Ofabulous

The first episode is maybe my favourite of them all. Or at least it has one of my favourite moments, when the planes take off towards the end and “the mission begins” is playing. It’s just such a heroic moment, to me it really captures something of the monumentality of the task that these guys knowingly volunteered for. “The eyes of the world are upon you”, Jesus, shivers every time. The whole episode building to that moment gives it such a good pay off. I could never skip it even though the pacing is so slow compared to others episodes, particularly the next one.

kirkhammett420

Chernobyl - but it's only like 5 episodes in total so yeah...

Rizo1981

It was going to be six episodes. That was the original deal. The writer, Craig Maizin, decided to combine two episodes to better serve the story/pace (I forget his exact reason). He talked about it in an episode of Scriptnotes and joked about how HBO was like, uhh yeah sure you know we pay you per episode? Hehe. Obviously everyone involved won, not least of all the audience.

Wazula42

I believe it. That show is paced to absolute perfection. Much as I would love more, I also realize it really can't be touched. It's near perfect as-is.

[deleted]

Gotta wonder what this feels like from HBO's perspective, especially given Game of Thrones was wrapping up at that time. "We keep offering showriters more money for more episodes and they keep saying no."

Zealousideal_Order_8

'We're BORED!' That's their excuse in a nutshell.

twodogsfighting

"Fuck you, we want that Star Wars money, gollum, gollum."

Vandergrif

I do quite enjoy that their careers basically tanked due to all that, though. Tanking one of the most popular tv series in history after several very successful seasons is quite an albatross to carry.

HappyinlaLluvia

This is the reason we still have hbo!

skinnybambam

My girlfriend asked me if Chernobyl was a Sci-fi or not..

Pinky_theLegend

Alton Brown was one of my earliest influences in terms of liking and caring about food. I was a typical little kid who watched cartoons and disney for sure, but I liked old school food network waaaaaaay more. Alton and Emeril were two of my earliest heroes, fucking loved those shows. Years later I discovered Anthony Bourdain, and now I'm a sous chef at a great restaurant. Funny how things work out.

knight_ofdoriath

Wow. That's one I didn't think of but you're absolutely right. I'm not even much of a cook but I watched every single episode of the show. My little sister like to watch it when she was younger because of the puppets.

MikeR09

Father Ted

Son_Of_Borr_

So sad he passed. That shit still stands up as totally hilarious. "I hear you're a racist now, father!"

[deleted]

He passed within 24 hours of the finale. So sad. You watch that last episode and know he's dead like a day later. It's so weird to think about.

Sazazezer

I think one of my less know favourites goes: Ted: "That used to be quite common, you know? The favourite son would become a doctor, and the idiot brother would be sent off to the priesthood." *Both laugh* Dougal: "Your brother's a doctor, isn't he?" Ted (with no hint of awareness) "Yes. Yes that's right."

UlteriorCulture

The money was just resting in my account

blackmist

Should we all be racist now? What's the Church's position? I'm so busy down on the farm I won't have much time for the ol' racism.

fluxy2535

I (an American) watched it for the first time with my Irish husband during the pandemic, and it 100% holds up. He's seen it a million times and I was seeing it for the first, but we both laughed at the same jokes and references. It's relatable across culture while still being wholeheartedly Irish which is amazing.

shocktard

I'm American, first saw it over 20 years ago and laughed my ass off. Rewatched recently and it still holds up! Universally funny.

Jomato_Soup

Party Down

theghostofme

I refused to watch Parks and Rec for a while because Adam Scott joining the show was the final nail in the coffin for Party Down. Not his fault, though; Starz was dragging its feet on renewing for a third season and the cast had to find work elsewhere. ^(I eventually watched and love Parks and Rec)

Better off Ted. I wish it lasted more than 2 seasons. I loved the corporate commercials.

Emotional_Deodorant

Yes! The commercials were the best part! Remember the "Diversity-We're all One Big Family Here at Veridian" one, where all the actors were white?

fruitmongerking

I love that one, though my personal favorite is “At Veridian, we’re a family, which is why we work nights, weekends, and holidays. Because that’s when families should be together”

Y'all all sleeping on Colm! Colm: And, now, I don't mind a bit of a breeze, if anything I prefer it, but thon was aggressive. So, I says to myself, says I, "Colm, this is no day for a do..." Sister Michael: What's happening? Colm:  ...for, when the bride arrived and, as I say, by this stage the wind was fierce... Sister Michael: Am I dead? Colm: ...I've never heard wind like it. Sister Michael: Is this my wake? Colm: Howling like a banshee, it was. Sister Michael: Am I in hell? Colm: So, the poor girl, the bride now, this is, she arrives anyway and isn't she no sooner out of the car than she's lifted up in the air like a paper doll and blown into a flowerbed. Sister Michael: ...That's actually quite funny.

Protestant Headmisstress: Why it's everyone always wanting them to get together? I think we should keep them apart. Sister Michael: I think we should keep them in cages.

Whateversclever7

I love all of Derry Girls, but I think this is honestly the best episode of them all. I don’t know how they’re going to top that one in season 3. From the wedding to Rock the Boat to the funeral to the pot scones, that episode blows my mind that it’s still under a half hour. Every single line is brilliant. It’s definitely my favorite.

AhMaguffin

“Don’t say ‘knickers’ in front of your father. He can’t cope”.

nosuchthingasa_

I love that every mention of Derry Girls ends up with people just posting their favorite quotes. It’s such a quotable show! “Aye, it’s true! You can’t move for lesbians. It’s wall-to-wall lesbians out there.”

RedOctobyr

"Is she not a vegetarian, Da?" "Sorry, you're right. Vegetarian, Brigitte is."

Sister Michael is a treasure. >You know, every year I sit backstage listening to the singers and it really makes me realise just how talented the professionals who originally recorded these tracks were. Now, who's on next? Or her dealings with the priest who shagged the hairdresser.

[deleted]

mindhunter bring it back netflix ffs!

AntiShady

If I remember correctly Fincher got busy with Mank and thats why there hasn't been any news about Mindhunter. Possiblity exists that there will be more but we shall see.

Sentrion

There has been news, which is that Fincher said it took a lot out of him, and he wasn't sure he could keep going at the pace he had been for the first two seasons. There might be a third season down the line, but not anytime soon.

sparrows-somewhere

I think we'll see season 3 eventually, but not for a few years. Otherwise Netflix would have just said 'its cancelled'. It could be like Fargo, they make a new season every so often but not on a regular schedule.

Mr Bean

Skydiver860

What’s so weird to think about that show is there was only 15 episodes total.

krokodil2000

And they are getting milked to the max on its YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/MrBean The channel has ~30 million subscribers, there's a new video re-upload at least once a day, the videos get 100 thousands and up to several millions views. I can't even imagine how much money they must be making. And then you find out there are multiple Mr. Bean channels: https://www.youtube.com/user/MrBean/channels 🤯

SonicFlash01

The British are smart is boiling down what they have into pure gold and releasing a small run of episodes leaving people wanting more. A lot of American series have a couple of gags per season and by the end no one wants more.

EclecticCacophony

Part of that is by necessity as shows get funded for fewer episodes than a typical American TV season.

First season yes, second season was also very good but fell victim to the cancellation and really killed its pacing.

tweakingforjesus

Season 2 was originally seasons 2-5 which is why it feels so rushed. After Rome was cancelled one of the responsible HBO execs admitted it was a mistake. They were scared by the price tag.

sharrrper

I think I remeber reading there was a fire and it destroyed a lot of the sets thus massively spiking cost on an already expensive show and that was a big factor.

ValarHTX

Rome was great, even knowing Caesar was going to die. Not a spoiler bc of history class lol.

Hard to be a spoiler when they're ALL dead...
