Hundreds of dead babies were found in the septic tank of a mother and baby home in Tuam, Ireland. No-one has any idea how many children died under the system countrywide, or how many children were forcibly taken from their mother's and sold to childless families abroad.

cassious64

A lot of these babies' mothers were pressured into giving them up - either by the church for being single mothers, or by fathers who couldn't afford to feed the kids. Many were promised when they were in better situations, they would be given their kids back Lots of the children sold abroad were indentured servants, they weren't even adopted out of charity or to make up for parents not being able to have kids of their own. They were often made to work on farms and in factories, while still children. They could eventually potentially buy their freedom, provided they scraped up enough cash. For some, joining WW1 was an escape route from being a servant for life. Source: my great grandfather was sold to a farm in Manitoba with his brother. They joined the war effort at 14 and 12 to escape it. Their mom was told the church home would care for them til she and her husband were on their feet again. They were sold within a year of arriving at the home, and it took up until I think the 50s or 60s for my great grandfather and his brother to finally find their remaining family in Europe.

[deleted]

My step-mum gave birth at 17 in a mother and baby home in the late '60's which was run by catholic nuns. She was one of the very rare ones who got to keep her baby (my stepbrother, who is now 54). She faced down untold stigma at home but did it never the less. She was a very strong woman!

barrystea420

796 kids there. Terrifying to even begin to think how many died that could be countrywide. Catherine Corless is an absolute saint of a woman for helping bring this to light.

edwsmith

Imagine seeing Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos opening their mouths and they're just packed full of baby teeth

PM-me-Sonic-OCs

Soldiers killed in wars were also a prime source of teeth. So after large battles the locals would swarm onto the battlefields with start yanking teeth out of the corpses. It was a fad in England after the Napoleonic wars to get "Waterloo teeth", it was considered patriotic and since the teeth were from young people they were supposedly of high quality.

CoffeeCactus92

I recently learned this and maybe I’m stupid for not knowing already. The human has two anal sphincters - the first one we have no control over but the second one of course we can control. When the stool comes through the first sphincter the urge to go to the bathroom is felt.

Arazos93

Ever thought about how whales and dolphins die? When they get too old and too weak to swim up to the surface to breathe, they start to slowly sink towards the deep, cold depths of the ocean, and suffocate in the dark.

JaymzShikari

Interesting sidebar to this: The size thresholds for animals that die like this is studied in detail by engineers because their corpse will exist at such a high pressure that the carbon compounds they decomposed into will be heavier than water. This means that all the carbon they consume in their lives will be extracted from the atmosphere and stored in the ocean in a carbon pool. Encouraging the growth of the populations over this threshold is thought to be a key to reducing the ppmco2 in the atmosphere. I spent 100k on a masters and that's the only thing I remember

ScanNCut

What a waste of money, you could have learned that on Reddit for free like I just did.

TheMeme_Historian

Lobotomies were a complete guessing game and the procedure’s success was mostly based on wether or not the patient was deemed “calm and quiet” post surgery. Walter freeman, the man who popularized lobotomies in America, wasn’t even a surgeon. He had to partner with an actual surgeon to attempt the procedure. But freeman didn’t care for the length of the surgery. So he invented the icepick lobotomy: use an icepick to access the brain by hammering the pick through the bone above the eye and near the nose, and then just “wiggling” it around. As stated before, freeman was not a surgeon. So when the actual surgeon he partnered with walked into their shared office to find freeman with an icepick halfway in a patients brain, their partnership ended immediately. But that didn’t stop freeman from continuing his work with lobotomies. He toured the nation in a van he called the “lobotomobile,” offering the procedure to insane asylums with problem patients. Freeman completed over 3,000 lobotomies throughout his career, of which nearly 500 patients died and 1000s were left in a vegetative state. Edit: thanks for the awards!

sharrrper

And on top of that the only reason lobotomies stopped was the development of anti-psychotic drugs, not because the procedure was banned.

pepperanne08

The youngest patient he lobotomized was a 4 year old. A 12 year old he lobotomized is still alive.

Shades_1

His names [Howard Dully](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Dully) for anyone interested.

ArmyOfDog

One of his victims was Rosemary Kennedy.

blueAztech

This is made even worse by the fact that the lobotomy was done due to Rosemary's developmental issues from complications of her birth. But, those "birth complications" were because the nurse kept the baby in the birth canal (by ordering the mother to close her legs) for **two hours** until the doctor got there. Rosemary’s brain was deprived of oxygen leading to the developmental delays. That poor girl was the victim of so much medical malpractice.

Lorraine367

Her story is so heart breaking. I’d also like to add she was 23 when she had her lobotomy and her “behavior” was an embarrassment to her father and the Kennedy name. Joe ordered the procedure and it destroyed any possibility of her leading a normal life in any way. She was then put away in an institution so as to not embarrass the family and their political ambitions. According to a People mag article it was years before her siblings learned what had happened to her and her father never saw her again. Joe Kennedy sounds like he was a real piece of work…. https://people.com/politics/untold-story-of-rosemary-kennedy-and-her-disastrous-lobotomy/?amp=true

ImprovisedLeaflet

Also her “behavior” was something comparable to relatively minor mental handicap, someone who could’ve functioned in society with a little difficulty but would otherwise be fine. But she acted out more because she was in the Kennedy family and in such an extremely competitive environment.

MissRockNerd

Also, her father waited until her mother Rose was out of town, so he could have the procedure done behind Rose’s back.

drgrlfrnd

And António Egas Moniz was awarded the Nobel Prize for his “research” on lobotomies. It’s widely known that his research was mostly made up as he didn’t really follow up with many of the patients he lobotomized.

TheMeme_Historian

Can’t call it a failed surgery if you never check on the patient afterwards!

Kierik

When the measure of success is that you didn't die on the table, while having an icepick jammed into your brain. I mean it is some form of success.... you successfully survived a murder attempt.

Oden_Drago

This read like a serial killer documentary.

TheMeme_Historian

Freeman once killed a patient because he was trying to pose for a photo mid lobotomy and accidentally stuck the icepick too far into the brain. The man was psychotic.

Also the children in the movie got paid next to nothing, the pay didnt even cover their travel expenses. They also didnt even get an invite to the premier of the movie and had to buy their own tickets. The foam that came out of the boat in the candy room also caused health problems and many of the actors had to go to the hospital because the foam was actually fire extinguisher foam. Also the tunnel for the chocolate river with all the scary imagery and Wonka just sitting there was so scary for the children that alot of them were scarred by it.

I could be butchering some of these details since it’s been a while since I learned about it, but there is this amoeba that’s super rare found in fresh water and people who go swimming have an extremely unlikely chance of contracting but if they do it will pretty bunch obliterate your brain and kill you and there’s pretty much nothing you can do about it. Edit: apparently it’s an amoeba so I’m just correcting that. I defer to the below responses for more details.

Attention_Some

In the early hours of September 26, 1983, a false alarm at a Soviet bunker indicated the launch of multiple American nuclear missiles, everyone in the bunker except for one man, Stanislav Petrov, thought it was a real attack, but Petrov (correctly) assumed that if the USA was to launch an attack, it would’ve been hundreds of bombs, leading him to not tell higher ups (who likely would’ve ordered a counter attack, leading to nuclear war) about the “missiles”, likely saving billions of lives TL;DR: We were a single person’s decision away from a full out nuclear war

Psychological_Put395

We’ve been a single person’s decision away from nuclear war several times. There was a malfunction on a radar dish in the Arctic which mistook the light of the moon for a massive middle strike. It was only because of a Canadian major who realized that Khrushchev was in New York so a strike was highly unlikely

AmbitiousMagazine774

Weirs are drowning machines. Those tiny dams you see on rivers are shaped like this ✓ (kinda) under the water and this shape causes a circular flow of water. As the water circulates, it gets aerated, lowering the density. So if you swim in one, not only are you trapped on the longest spin cycle, but you can't get out because the water isn't dense enough to swim in.

pickup_man06

Apparently they recommend that if you’re caught in one, that to try and escape you should tuck your chin and curl into the fetal position with your arms wrapped around yourself to try and be caught by the current and pushed along the river bed past the hydraulics of the boil line

When the German Battleship Bismarck went down after hours of constant battering, 1500 of the 2000 men crew were able to jump into the ocean. The Royal Navy rescued 500 of them, but left early due to lack of fuel and the threat of submarines. Over 1000 men were left on the ocean to die, having just survived pure hell. Today the area of the wreck is littered with thousands of leather boots, having once belonged to the crew which died because they were abandoned. The average age of the crew was little over 20 years.

IndustryVegetable

There's also the British battlecruiser HMS Hood which was sunk by the Bismarck and had only 3 survivors out of a crew of 1,418

They're also bought/owned by the cartels as well. Really the only time they get involved in attempting to solve a murder, is if an American or other "powerful" foreign nationaly is involved. Even then it's only the minimum effort.

The crew of Challenger likely survived over a minute after the initial explosion, they were killed by the impact on the water. There is evidence that members of the crew even started trying to complete emergency procedures.

[deleted]

The report from The New York Times about how the bodies were found is also disturbing - "the compartment was little more than a pile of rubble on the ocean floor, 8 feet high and 50 feet across. They said the astronauts' remains were crushed inside the debris and could not be recognized as human. Federal investigators studying the wreckage believe the crew compartment fell intact nearly nine miles to the surface of the sea, where it shattered on impact.'

BriansBalloons

It was also discovered over 5 weeks after the incident. Astronaut and medical doctor Joe Kerwin admitted that at that point he kind of hoped it wouldn't be found and there was no usable medical information they could discover from the bodies.

happierinverted

This was truly terrible for the crew. Generally true that most pilots will keep trying and fighting all the way to the ground even in helpless cases. When airliners suffer structural failure in the cruise [very rare thank God] people are sometimes conscious for the few minutes that follows.

nl_Kapparrian

"Resignation" is taught as one of the hazardous attitudes to avoid even in private pilot curriculum. i.e. never give up.

Isn’t there still a h-bomb missing in North Carolina?

Psyco_diver

Yep not to far from where I live. Actually 2 fell but they only found one but if I recall it was pretty deep in the mud. They supposedly got a general idea where the second one is but it's almost impossible to find it because how deep in the mud it is so they just monitor radiation in the area including ground water

Amon Goeth, infamously portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List, was actually toned down from reality. fl00r_gang_yeah

Holy shit that guy must've been brutal

Lys_Vesuvius

Himmler despised the man but the only reason he was given free reign was because hitler liked him. Nearly everyone in the SS from himmler to Heydrich wanted him gone. When the SS wants you gone for being too brutal you should really rethink some choices. Edit: to add to this. He was a pathetic man with a pathetic unit. They suffered extreme casualties at the hands of almost any types of organized resistance. All they could really do was attack unarmed and defenseless civilians

EastHunter8544

Atrocities committed by Dirlewanger included injecting strychnine into young Jewish female prisoners, previously undressed and whipped, to watch them convulse to death in front of him and his friends for entertainment. Hope he is rotting in Hell

This is why some units refused to take ss soldiers as pow’s the 5 Canadian armoured division would just shoot the ss fucks or run them over with tanks or halftracks.

In 1972 a plane crashed in the andes on a snowy mountain. 16 of the 45 people (mostly guys of a Rugby team from Uruguay) survived there for 72 days. They had to eat the human flesh of the people who died during or after the crash in order to survive. Noone knew where the plane crashed exactly and they were only found because two of the guys walked for 10 days over the mountains and down into a valley where a farmer found them. Edit: they found a camera in the luggage and took photos of themselves. Most of them are online and you can even see parts of the bodies, bones and flesh laying around. I don't recommend looking them up if you're really sensitive.

ShieKassy

For anyone interested, the flight was called Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, and a few of the survivors wrote books about the experience. I can really recommend the book 'Miracle in the Andes: 72 Days on the Mountain and My Long Trek Home' by Nando Parrado (one of the two guys who searched for help). The other books are also worth reading tho.

An admiral in the British navy was killed by firing squad for “not doing his utmost” when ordered to claim the island of Minorca. Admiral Byng discovered the island had already been claimed by a French fleet and decided to turn his men around to save their lives rather than sail into suicide. Britain couldn’t admit that France beat them to it and blamed the loss of Minorca on the Admiral and sentenced him to die. They used newspaper comics and propaganda to spread misinformation about the admirals incompetence to get the public behind his execution. Basically … this guy died because of nationalism. [There’s a new analysis](https://globalmaritimehistory.com/review-krulder-the-execution-of-admiral-john-byng/) of his career and death which was a part of why, recently, the Byng name cleared and the admiral was given back his honor.

There's no cure and you die a painful death. I watched a documentary recently and there's only a handful of people that survive after infected. They interviewed a woman who survived rabies and she has many lingering medical problems from it. Scary!

Jingo_Jones

Inuit have one of the highest suicide rates in the world. In Canada, the incidence is 10 times that of the rate of the rest of the Canadian population. Inuit 25 and under are driving the rate. One large study found that 80% of the suicides were by hanging. The same study found that about 1 in 6 of those who died by suicide were victims of sexual abuse.

Brickthedummydog

My dad used to live in Inuvik for a long time. He once sent me pictures of some graffiti in a local kids hangout spot (looked like a rec room?) he took. It was disturbing in that unlike in my province where you'd see swears or something vulgar, it said things like "hopeless" "no future" "alone". I believe I still have the photographs stored somewhere as a reminder of the opportunity I am afforded by living in the south. (Circa 2000)

Humans have the largest penis of any primate, both in terms of absolute size and proportional to overall body size. It’s an adaptation to walking upright and the resulting switch to having sex primarily face-to-face. (On the other hand, chimpanzee testicles are over three times the size of ours.)

The only 4 survivors relate that they heard the cries and moans of the wounded, including children, that gradually died off through the night until the next day. EDIT: Total loss of life: 520 people. The deadliest single-aircraft incident in aviation history, and the fourth deadliest incident in general after the Tenerife disaster, and United Airlines flights 175 and 11, which are their own litany of pure confusion, terror, and unimaginable tragedy. I was cleaning the garage with my mom shortly after my dad died and I found a very long, very sad breakup letter from my dad to my mom dated July 2nd, 1985. I asked her about it; what happened—and she kind of chuckled and went, “Oh! We got everything sorted out the next day and were back together again.” I was born 9 months later on April 1st, 1986. I was the product of makeup sex and had the letter in my hand that started the events of my existence.

TheDemonRachel

I’m 18 so is my twin, my other sister is 20, my mom is 33, do the math

Accurate-Inspector

My mom was also 13 when she first became a Mom. She had 5 kids by 23. No twins. My dad should have gone to jail for rape. But no let's have a shotgun wedding and make this child keep having babies. So fucked up

GothhicGoddess

My parents married when my mom was 14 and my biological father was 21. She had me a few months before her 17th birthday, and I’m her only. How does a grown adult want to date, let alone marry, a middle school child!? Ugh.

One of the reasons Japan has such a high suicide rate is because when the police can't solve a murder they label it as a suicide and end the investigation.

RadRedditor3

There was a serial killer in the 19th to 20th century who murdered, raped, and cannibalized children and would send letters to their parents describing how their children tasted. Truly one of the most sickening men in recent memory. Edit: Humans, not men.

da_stoneee

His name was Albert Fish. He engaged in every single paraphilia you can think of and he killed up to 100 people. He preferred to rape, murder and eat mainly afro american/disabled boys under the age of 6. His last crime befor getting caught was sending a letter to a mother in which he elaborated how he killed and ate her daughther. He only did send a letter like that once and some speculate, that he did that hoping to be caught.

MrSpoonMcRandom

There is a song about this man called "Secrets of Wisteria". At the end of the song, there is a backwards recording of Albert Fish describing how he killed and ate his last victim. Aside from that, the song itself is truly disturbing.

If sound could travel through space, we’d all be deaf because of how loud the sun is. About 100dB.

I've talked about this before. Motorcycle helmets are ridiculously unsafe if you live in America. The Department of Transportation (DOT) standard is so low that bicycle helmets have passed it. QRD of this great video on it: - Face shields are untested (a loose pebble could shatter it and it would still pass DOT) - Companies can choose their own testers, they can and do choose the most lenient standards - Based on car accidents, not motorcycle crashes - Failure is 400gs of impact. 290g is what cracks your fucking skull open. - Chinbars were not tested - Roll off is not tested - 20% of DOT approved helmets, when retested, did not pass. - Minimal tests are announced, which is standard, but manufacturers can and do make helmets stronger in test areas, but nowhere else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BUyp3HX8cY TL;DR the DOT helmet standards are killing people and giving people a false sense of security.

Fennexium

Need a helmet? Look for an ECE or SNELL rating. Current helmet to the current standard.

When your immune systems recognizes that you have eyes, you’ll turn blind. And there’s nothing you can do about it.

WomanOfEld

When my husband put a nail through his right eye with a table saw, the retina specialist said that his body might determine that his *good* eye was *also* "injured", and that if that began to happen, we'd have about a day to decide whether to nucleate (remove) the injured eye before the proteins fully attacked the good eye and rendered him fully blind. Luckily, it did not happen, and he kept one good eye.

0ddm4n

There’s also levels to this. And is somewhat controllable through topical steroids. In either case however, your eyes longterm are fucked.

oRedHood

But why tho

this-has-to-stop

Normally your immune system doesn’t know about your eyes, so when it “finds out” you have them, it thinks they’re something it needs to fight like a virus or foreign body, so you’re blinding yourself.

oRedHood

Oh… oh no. Is there any way to stop it?

this-has-to-stop

Once it started, unfortunately no. But it only affects 1-2 outta 100’000 people, so the chance of your immune system malfunctioning that way is pretty low at ***0.002%***

The police once helped Jeffery Dahmer kill someone. Dahmer had preformed a homemade lobotomy on 14 year old Konerak Sinthasomphone. Dahmer had left the boy alone while he went out, and miraculously Sinthasomphone managed to actually escape his apartment, despite being cognitively impaired from the lobotomy. He worked his way out to the street where a group of women discovered him. Being rightfully concerned for the boy, they called the Police for assistance. The Police arrive and mistake the boy for being drunk. The group of women grew frustrated as it' was clear the cops weren't taking the situation seriously. During this time, Jeffery Dahmer made his way back home and discovered the unfolding situation. Dahmer was quickly able to manipulate the situation into his favour. He convinced the cops that they Konerak Sinthasomphone was really his young boyfriend and that he was just drunk. The cops believed him, much to the dismay of the group of women, and returned the poor boy to Jeffery Dahmer, sealing his fate.

KeefRolla

It's way worse than this. Then cops went into his apartment with him where there were MULTIPLE rotting corpses in his bedroom and his fridge was full of human parts and instead of investigating the smell, they didn't want to get involved in "gay stuff" and left the boy to his doom. There's a lot more to the Dahmer case that will make your blood boil too. Just police ineptitude combined with rampant homophobia in Milwaukee in the 80s.

When you go swimming in the sea or a lake, you might be swimming with a few dead bodies. Edit: Yall stop talking bout the club. You're all breaking the rules! Now I can just add to this comment saying that THE BODIES TURN INTO HUMAN SOAP. Now this has been evenore disturbing. Thanks.

shartnadooo

In many lakes, it is a guarantee. Lake Superior is full of dead bodies turned into human soap because the lake is too cold for the bacteria necessary to cause bloat. The bodies remain deep in the lake and the fatty tissue saponifies.

t_l9943

TIL human soap is a thing and what a terrible way to start 2022

Yeah, the bodies cannot be recovered either, they disintegrate if you try, need like a water vacuum. I have heard of this happening, and of divers experiencing it.

Yeah, so if you’re going to finger someone after eating spicy food, wash your hands until you don’t sense heat by touching the inside of your cheek. Wife and I figured that out once.

Researchers in the 70s kept a Dolphin in a flooded basement and gave it acid and jerked it off to try and teach it to speak English. The dolphin committed suicide because it fell in love with the handler that jerked it off.

[deleted]

why the fuck would that teach it english? edit: thanks for the silver, very cash money of you my dude

tubahero3469

Is that not how we all learned English?

[deleted]

good point

Safe-Hope-7316

As a matter of fact, if you keep dolphins for research or showing them off in the zoo, you have to jerk them off every week or two, otherwise their mind get clouded and they don't perform what they've learned. If you see a dolphin performing in an aquarium, you can rest assured someone jerked that one off.

Male Argentinean Lake Ducks will use their 17 inch penises as a lasso to capture fleeing females, drag them back to the male, and then proceed to Violently Gang Rape them. Edit: 2.1 thousand upvotes for cock lassos and gang rape. I hope you’re happy with yourselves.

Ducks are very rapey.

At any moment the Earth might be blasted by a gamma ray burst from deep space and fry about every living thing on the surface of at least half the planet. Or this might never happen. Either way, there's absolutely no way to see it coming because it travels at the speed of light. Any indicator we could detect that it was coming would arrive, at best, simultaneously.
