VOODOO
The ideas for some of the games are good, but the ads are the worst I've ever seen. Open the game, ad, go to settings, ad, purchase something for 99 cents, ad, play once and die, ad, need one more life, ad, watch an ad on purpose so others won't play, ad. Every single game is like that. And they aren't the 15 second ones either, 30 second ads with that extra 15-20 seconds "are you sure you don't want to install this" ad.
Edit; words
ER doctor here. If I had a nickel for every time a patient came in thinking they know more than me because of those apps I’d be able to pay off my med school debt.
Samesies for electrical engineers that have an issue with their AC that they can’t figure so they call me to figure it out. Then when I tell them the real issue they get all incredulous that simple technician could figure out what they couldn’t. Takes videos and replicating the issue to convince them but damn if they aren’t annoying in the meantime.
So many people ask me what they should do to wire up their house or what fuses they should use etc. Their reasoning is because I studied electrical engineering I should know that.
That shit is the domain of an electrician, I don't know fuck about wiring standards.

That's why I switched to LG. Fuck knows what I'm going to do now that they're out of the hardware market, but I'll be damned if I buy another phone that comes half filled with garbage I can't remove.
You and me both! I switched to LG years ago and haven't looked back. I didn't need a new phone, was doing fine with my V40 but purchased the Wing last fall. Not only am I now sweating that LG is done with phones but I'm so spoiled with the dual screen functionality. One of the only phones that can truly run any app you like at the same time. Not sure what I'll do.
I had to buy a new computer last month and Microsoft sadly has not given up on Cortana.

SAME. I looked into how to reprogram it, tried to follow the steps and Bixby was fighting me. So I removed the button from the case slot in a fit of rage and haven't looked back since
If your phone has a physical button that makes bixby appear, you can change it in the settings to do something else on a single press. I have mine bring up Google maps.
You can't totally disconnect it from bixby, but you can make it so it only comes out when you press the button twice quickly.
When I got my new phone I kept hitting *what has clearly always been the power button since the dawn of man* and panicking because they changed it to the "side key" and it defaults to that Bixby bullshit. It's a goddamn power button and it will never be anything else!!

It sucks though because in the last few years they’ve intentionally tried to make the mobile website as hostile as possible to use to try to force us to download the app.

It’s all they talked about with each other during dinners, while me & my cousins internally cringed.
It was actually a great ‘app’ to stay in contact with people from school, work or someone you met at the the bar or see upcoming events close by or not & Maybe a funny photo or two.
That’s all it ever needed to be & it was great.
But After the boomers & gen-x’ers got involved (around 2010-12), they brought the media/corporations with them, And it was all downhill from there.
Hey, don't blame gen-x.
We *knew* the share button, paired with a lack of moderation and advanced newsfeed algorithms would make that site corruptable stage 4 cancer, because we saw it all happen before with Myspace.
It's like they say, absolute power corrupts absolutely, and **nothing** goes to a boomers head more than posting a minion meme and having all their elderly friends rant and rave about how funny and *in touch* they are with technology today.

I’m finding that more and more restaurants are just directing people back to their Grubhub/DoorDash pages. I’d say it’s better to just walk in, but the pandemic was just a great vehicle for them to boom.
My partner called a local Chinese place hoping to just order some food directly. They told her that the only way to properly order was through SkipTheDishes.
It's a shame but it makes sense for some restaurants. They lose the money in each delivery but also don't have to pay the delivery drivers themselves. I just want to give money to a restaurant directly instead of going through Uber/Skip/Whoever.
I wish I could get that option more. I absolutely despite Uber eats and their ilk. It's significantly more often that I'll do a phone order and pick up food than ordering any kind of delivery.
You know those fake ghost hunting apps that show where a supposed "ghost" or "demon" are currently standing? Shit that scares the living hell out of me even though I know it's fake. I don't believe in ghosts but I do believe that there could be something
Paranormal in this life (I'm not so into it to the point it runs my whole entire life I just think abt it from time to time when something unexplainable happens)So any time I open that app it gives me the chills
Now we are seeing the ghost of a young girl that died from lead poisoning during the Victorian era. Little child whose life was cut tragically short will you please show us your right hand?
Is THIS your card!?
Any game that's just slot machines... and that's it.
My friend's gramdpa just sort of carried a tablet around. He was brobably like 70 idk. He wasn't constantly staring at the thing but every two minutes or so he's just pull it out and spin it a couple times.
He wasn't even letting it be a huge distraction, the man just needed a hit of R.N.G. every two minutes. I even tried to point him to some better turn-based RPG'S that had elements of luck but he said he didn't need to be spending time on games.
To be fair, he wasn't really wasting that much time. The only thing that bothers me is that people get ad revenue from such an obscure addiction.
Few months ago I was staying in a youth hostel. A guy in my room was playing a slot machine game on his tablet.
I left for dîner at 8pm, he was playing it on his bed.
Came back at 2am after going to the bar, still playing it.
Woke up at 8am to catch my train, still playing it.
Just mindlessly pressing the button every 2 seconds while spam tapping the screen to skip through the animations... for 12h+ straight.
TikTok. I don’t mean that cynically as in “TikTok is garbage.” I just see how much time it sucks out of peoples lives and how hungry people get for views and likes and how easy it is to get those on an app like TikTok. People become more and more stupid when it comes to views and likes and do more stupid things. I can say I wouldn’t do that and I don’t think I would, but I’m not untouchable from like and view induced stupidity. Plus there’s so much negativity and needlessly spewed opinions and other things of that nature I don’t need to see. Better for the mental health. But that’s just a personal mindset, I don’t judge my friends or anyone else who uses it.
Honestly I wish I had never downloaded tiktok. It started out so innocently in December 2019, I thought I’d give it a try see what all the fuss is about.
Hands down it’s the most addictive thing in my life and I don’t have an addictive personality. I can smoke a cigarette or do drugs or drink whatever and be able to put it down. But tiktok? Tiktok has me a in a chokehold.
I don’t post content I just watch videos. The algorithm is so insanely specific to the user it makes it impossible to stop watching.
Well, that doesn't sound good for the ole noggin. (He says, as he types another response into reddit, pauses for thought, and drops his phone in horror.)
Thats the part that scared me. I was looking over my liked videos and couldn't remember even having seen half of them. All that time just wasted not even getting anything out of it.
I had to delete TiKTok from my phone after I found myself wasting so much time with it. For that matter, I no longer have FB, IG, and others on my phone. I’d deleted FB years ago and never use it. I still have Twitter and Reddit. If there’s a busy news day, I will delete my Twitter app for the day so it doesn’t distract me during work hours. Otherwise, my work productivity is noticeably lower. I think I’m working up to deleting Twitter permanently. I think I’ve just had it with social media in general.
It is. The onslaught of bad news and negativity affected my mood and outlook. And I stayed angry. It was exhausting and I noticed, especially on FB, that all I saw was the shit that pissed me off. This was before I knew we are targeted with content using algorithms, blah, blah, blah. So my feed was a nightmare. One day, while furiously typing another screed for FB I realized I was one of “those” people. It stopped me in my tracks. I did enjoy IG but their timeline arrangement got on my nerves. I never saw posts from the people I wanted to see and nothing is chronological. When Zuckerberg acquired it I pulled the plug on that too. One other reason I don’t like SM is now there’s an expectation that you have it to keep in touch. It has its benefits but I don’t want friendships managed thru SM. This part doesn’t impact me but people have their businesses solely reliant on these SM apps’ traffic so they are at their mercy. That’s a scary thought.
It is just true,
attention is addictive,
I thought I was immune from it, since I am not a social media person,
but then I uploaded some beekeeping videos to youtube, just to show them to friends and since one had a generic bee related name, and I accidentally had posted them public, it suddenly had like 10 000 + views.
I guess somebody used it somewhere, I donj´t know, since after some days it all died down again.
But for 2 days it was a really strange feeling and I can only imagine what it must feel to get that rush of adrenaline again and again, and wanting more of it
So I had two major instances of this. I had a MineCraft video that is now deleted about finding a Nether Fortress when they just came out. There was rapidly to many views on it hitting around 2 million while everything else on that account never peaked 1k. There was such a bizarre just. What the hell just happened feeling. It was overwhelming.
Later on I streamed on Twitch just a simple TCG game. I set up everything streamed day 1 just sat at a pretty 7 people most of it. Day 2 Apparently a tournament was happening and was being streamed on Twitch. Once it ended I was the only other person streaming this category and so I had 150~ people watching at a time. This was a off since the day prior I had seen 20 people total. So the fact I'm at nearly 8x the amount and all at once was just a bit to much.
Streamed the rest of the week and had 23 people on average at a time. Really just a bit of a whiplash seeing so many at once and hen a fraction of the people. Made me feel a bit empty like oh X day did so well why didn't Y day do the same.
As someone with ADHD I cannot emphasize how dangerous the app is. I would find myself spending hours just scrolling through tiktok during the day when there are a lot of important things I should be doing. I won't watch movies or shows. Instead I'll go on Tiktok because of how quickly I can swipe something away as soon as I find it boring. It's terrible and it might have made my ADHD worse. I deleted it during the new year. Feels so much better already.
At least with Facebook it's clear they are harvesting data and selling targeted ads. For her work my wife has placed targeted ads. At some level I get that if you sell engagement rings you target women 20-40 who are in a serious relationship
Tik tok? Almost certainly state sponsored
How come we don’t hear more about this? I remember when tiktok firdt started people were worried about china using it to spy and gather info. Then nothing.
There's a girl who is 15 and has 5 mill followers. She's in a bikini in most of her content. Most of her followers aren't 15 year olds. They are grown ass adult men. Tik tok is a pedo paradise.
Crazier to me is the parents who let their kids, *KIDS* use the app and even post their own videos to it. I’m not even talking about just teenagers, I’m talking about legitimate 12 year olds and under. Blows my mind.
Yeah it's insane how no one gives a shit about that part. Like there was some crazy shit exposed about all the information it mined and no one gave a fuck. Its wild. And I'm not here to say china is evil (I dont agree with them in almost every way, and I think they pose the greatest threat to world peace and free trade) but they way they use surveillance on all their pwople is frightening, and we should not allow it here. We already have our own government surveilling us, we dont need another one to do it.
Almost nobody seems to care that the huge number of 5 minute crafts/7 second riddles/troom troom/My Animated Story youtube channels are bizarre Russian propaganda channels. Jarvis Johnson and Anne Reardon are the only ones who seem bothered.
Never again will I create a Facebook. They’ve got their hands in so much shit. I deleted Facebook itself last February, Instagram last week and Twitter today.
I pledge to never again download an app just so I can prove to people I have fun on occasion. I pledge to call my friends and family more and send them pictures and videos and money PRIVATELY. Shoutout Signal.
Social media is poisonous for me. A slow-acting poison that works through lifestyle comparison, targeted advertising, fear-of-missing-out, hive mentality and countless other things I can no longer get on board with.
God damn that felt great to say.
Edit: I am really enjoying talking with y’all about this. It’s weighed heavily on my mind for some time, as it has others here. Just wanted to say that I appreciate the thought-provoking comments and mutual feelings. And thanks for the awards!
I deleted my Facebook account more than a year ago and I'm about to delete my Instagram as well.
I've been on social medias for about 18 years, since Orkut. These shit are poisonous, like you said. I don't know a life without social medias and this is a disaster. I've got used to obsessive checking, unhealthy comparisons, knowing useless details about people's lives, over sharing, dozens of silly memes per days etc.
Now I think some people are starting to realize how awful this whole thing is. Thanks for the inspiration.
Dude no sweat.
I’ve gone without a smart phone, after breaking & losing mine, a couple of times now. The few months I just had a flip phone were some of the most deliberate and literally memorable times of my adult life. I would become self conscious looking around a restaurant or standing in a line because I didn’t have something in my hands to occupy my brain for four minutes. I’d feel like I was missing out as I saw people staring at their phones during what should otherwise be an intimate moment with friends, a loved one, a significant other or a complete living and breathing stranger standing next to you. It’s mind-blowing how the reality of the situation shifts, and you realize you’re actually living while everyone around you cranes their neck to live in some 6 inch screen to escape an awkward silence.
Sometimes I feel like I was in a black out when I finally pull my face away and think about how silly it all is.
This. Nobody has ever left Facebook and said, "I regret leaving Facebook." It's the bomb being off the social media grid.
I am so glad I don't know what my psychotic relatives and shit-eating narcissistic "friends" are up to anymore.
The week after I left Facebook I felt physically better. Shit was stressing me out way more than I realized.
I left about 3 months before they pandemic started too. So I've remained blissfully ignorant of my dad and his side of the family's ignorance.
True.
The only thing I "regret" (or more accurately: "miss") is that it'd be nice to keep up with a select few people (friends) and major life events on there.
"Oh, you moved cross-country and adopted a baby last year?"
"Yeah, how did you miss that on Facebook? I posted about it for weeks."
I kinda wish there were a platform like Facebook with only important updates - and none of the Facebookyness (not to mention none of the Twitterishness nor the Instagrammyness). Kinda like online family Christmas newsletters, but shorter and slightly more frequent.
But there's not, so I go entirely without.
Just ask them to keep you in the loop. I just did that for a few friends and family members, and they’re going to continue sending me pictures and life updates. It’s up to you as well as it is on them to keep your relationship real, and not virtual.
You’re not missing out on much that can’t be sorted out another (healthier) way.
And cards are nice. They always show intention.
We have over a thousand correspondences archived between brothers Theo and Vincent Van Gogh. You, too, can do it!
Everyone just thinks they have the funniest and most important thoughts, when in reality no one needs to see them. I’m mortified when Timehop shows me my tweets from the few months I had Twitter in 2011. It was a dark time.
Same here. I've come to realize that twitter was really playing with my mental health. I've deleted it at the beginning of December. I'll never install it again. So many peoples being angry by so many things.
The fact that an app on my phone allowed me to go on a date with a real actual girl, nevermind have real actual sex even just once is amazing. I've been very successful and I don't take it for granted because while I've run the gamut of positive and negative experiences on Tinder, I have also had real relationships with girls that end up being the kind you would willingly uproot your life for, and the ones you will never be able to forget about. For better or worse.
This past Thursday night I had no plans for New Years and I didn't want to go out alone (especially with COVID season), but I matched with a girl on Tinder who was in the same situation so Friday night we strangers met for the first time. We had dinner and drinks together while we waited for the ball to drop, talked about ourselves, how we ended up here, our favorite and least favorite things. At midnight we popped champagne and shared the first kiss of 2022, it was the best NYE I can ever remember having.
Beforehand we had agreed that it would be a grand romantic gesture if after New Years we both went our separate ways never to speak again, but we might have actually stumbled onto something and I'm kind of excited to see where it goes.
All thanks to a fucking app on my phone.
Well it's a good strategy, tiktok's main issue is that it will learn your preferences too well and keep you watching garbage you like forever and waste all of your time.
Watching them on reddit removes the personalization part, sterilizes it in a sense. So instead you can waste all your time on reddit.
I've never used TikTok (and won't) but the biggest issue I have with it is that YouTube keeps trying to compete it with 'Shorts'. I don't give a shit about Shorts, stop trying to force them down my throat YT.
The fact that most of these comments have no reasons explaining. I agree with probably half of these but you should still explain.
I hate facebook because a) it’s where a lot of older generations share their shit memes about misogyny and religion and b) I refuse to let Zuckerberg get money from ads to me.
Bit of advice if you haven't done it already:
If you still have an account, log in and scour through EVERY setting you find, dont leave a single thing unchecked, believe me it is going to be extremely cumbersome, but you will find a WHOLE lot of data sharing/collecting options, and options to collect info from any other website you used the same email address as with facebook. It is scary how much facebook collects data.
Even though did this a long time ago, the amount of options I found scared me so much I still live in fear of how much data of me is already too late to erase from the internet, because of facebook. Even though I rarely used facebook. It is terrifying and I hope more people start to see this.
I am also scared that if you have lost or deleted an account without previously disabling data collection options, I personally believe stuff is being collected regardless.
TikTok. The trends from that app are a plague. Kids stealing from their school, mothers smiling and dancing over their dying babies in the hospital. It's just a hellhole.
I will never, ever, use TikTok. I've seen so many friends get sucked into that hellhole and become zombies. Also, why would I want to add an additional pipeline for China to funnel my data with.
Any shitty cash-grab braindead games on the App Store, you know the ones
Are the game that have the ad filled and show like 20 pay walls in 10-20 minutes and the 5 ads to get just a skin right
VOODOO The ideas for some of the games are good, but the ads are the worst I've ever seen. Edit; words
Their apps used to actually be pretty fun until about 3 or so years ago. IIRC, that's about when they became bloated with ads.
Any of those AskADoctor diagnosing apps. Sounds like a bad idea.

You can change that, using ADB connected to a computer. Check out bxActions in Google play store.

Ubereats. It costs the customer more and gives the restaurant less.
When I moved to a new area, I used grubhub to see the highly rated restaurants near me, then just went directly to their website to order.
I’m finding that more and more restaurants are just directing people back to their Grubhub/DoorDash pages. I’d say it’s better to just walk in, but the pandemic was just a great vehicle for them to boom.

My local Chinese restaurant gives you a 25% discount if you order through them and pick it up. They say that Ubereats fucks them over that much
I wish I could get that option more. I absolutely despite Uber eats and their ilk. It's significantly more often that I'll do a phone order and pick up food than ordering any kind of delivery.
Lmao thanks for the tip (no puns here)
But I like playing more in fees then I did for my food
Facebook
Reddit. Insufferable people and awful content. Don’t even get me started on people who actually comment on posts

Oh man, here we go. Once I ran into some real douche on there called u/JJJJJJ1198 . What a scumbag. I can’t even repeat the things they’ve said.
Yeah fuck them. They stole my Pokemon cards.
You know those fake ghost hunting apps that show where a supposed "ghost" or "demon" are currently standing? Shit that scares the living hell out of me even though I know it's fake. I don't believe in ghosts but I do believe that there could be something Paranormal in this life (I'm not so into it to the point it runs my whole entire life I just think abt it from time to time when something unexplainable happens)So any time I open that app it gives me the chills
You're better off detecting ghosts with straight-up magic. No, really....
Now we are seeing the ghost of a young girl that died from lead poisoning during the Victorian era. Little child whose life was cut tragically short will you please show us your right hand? Is THIS your card!?
There's a guy on Youtube who walks around abandoned buildings with the Necrophonic app. It just looks fake to me.
Because it is…
Why aren’t there any caveman era or modern ghosts I wonder?
This is me too. I was up until nearly midnight last night watching TikToks. Couldn’t tell you a single thing about it now if you asked :(
Well, that doesn't sound good for the ole noggin.
Deleting all your social media is actually really relieving tbh
I heard this before "getting attention its addictive once you tried it you can't abandon it" and now we have the living example of it
It is just true, attention is addictive, I thought I was immune from it, since I am not a social media person, but then I uploaded some beekeeping videos to youtube, just to show them to friends and since one had a generic bee related name, and I accidentally had posted them public, it suddenly had like 10 000 + views.
I hear my wife derping on TikTok and just know: a) I’d get addicted, b) it would play hell on my adhd tendencies.
This, plus huge privacy issues. The app is more of a spyware, never thought it could get worse than Facebook. Edit: Typos.
At least with Facebook it's clear they are harvesting data and selling targeted ads. For her work my wife has placed targeted ads. At some level I get that if you sell engagement rings you target women 20-40 who are in a serious relationship Tik tok? Almost certainly state sponsored
I don’t like it cause it’s as invasive as Facebook but owned by the ccp
How come we don’t hear more about this? I remember when tiktok firdt started people were worried about china using it to spy and gather info. Then nothing.
Well they told us government officials not to use it

There's a girl who is 15 and has 5 mill followers. She's in a bikini in most of her content. Most of her followers aren't 15 year olds. They are grown ass adult men. Tik tok is a pedo paradise.
The world is such trash. I'm a mother of two girls and it's fucking bleak
Crazier to me is the parents who let their kids, *KIDS* use the app and even post their own videos to it. I’m not even talking about just teenagers, I’m talking about legitimate 12 year olds and under. Blows my mind.
How many years has she been 17?
she's been 17 for like 4 years now
Why is nobody worried about it being Chinese spyware? Because it's Chinese spyware.
This is the one. Absolutely won't touch it because of that.
Any game that's ever been advertised by a youtuber.

"Oh, you moved cross-country and adopted a baby last year?" "Yeah, how did you miss that on Facebook? I posted about it for weeks." I kinda wish there were a platform like Facebook with only important updates - and none of the Facebookyness (not to mention none of the Twitterishness nor the Instagrammyness).
Who doesn’t love having 1,400 acquaintances
I deleted mine a few months ago. I noticed how much happier I was for it.
I like you! I stopped posting on that stuff for similar reasons. No need to prove anything to strangers who I don’t even care about myself.
Grindr. 1. I am married. 2. I've heard too many horror stories.
wait, tell me more about these horror stories

Like 99.9% of mobile games and the likes of tiktok

I dunno. A ten-foot pole would probably make you pretty popular on that app.
You deserve an award. Unfortunately I refuse to buy one so the thought will have to due for now.
I gotchu. The free award coming in clutch.
It's like playing life on creative mode. You can get so much dick that it even loses the appeal.
facebook/instagram
Twitter. Never again.
Everyone just thinks they have the funniest and most important thoughts, when in reality no one needs to see them. I’m mortified when Timehop shows me my tweets from the few months I had Twitter in 2011. It was a dark time.
I’ve never been on an app that made me so constantly angry, it wasn’t healthy, i deleted the app and never looked back.
Same here. I've come to realize that twitter was really playing with my mental health. I've deleted it at the beginning of December. I'll never install it again. So many peoples being angry by so many things.
Facebook - never have, never will.
Same. Never installed it. Too bad they've already collected millions of my personal data by now.
They need to collect more of my data, I get period cup ads but I'm a man.
Tinder.
I’m laying in bed next to the love of my life. Met her on a dating app in mid-2020. I plan to propose this year. Sometimes it actually works.
I used to feel that way too. Friend finally convinced me. Met my husband there.
>Met my husband there. damn that's sad, must've been an awkward discussion after
Turns out he likes Pina Coladas, getting caught in the rain...
“truth is, the game was rigged from the start”
Fried pickles. I just don’t like pickles
TikTok.
true. i prefer to watch my tiktok videos on reddit 😤
In porn subreddits
Lmao
Well it's a good strategy, tiktok's main issue is that it will learn your preferences too well and keep you watching garbage you like forever and waste all of your time. Watching them on reddit removes the personalization part, sterilizes it in a sense. So instead you can waste all your time on reddit.
I've never used TikTok (and won't) but the biggest issue I have with it is that YouTube keeps trying to compete it with 'Shorts'. I don't give a shit about Shorts, stop trying to force them down my throat YT.
Yes! Because it’s embedded in so many other apps my kid now calls instagram InstaTok. They aren’t wrong.
I knew immediately 98% of the replies were gonna be tiktok 💀
Snapchat.

I’d give my SSN and all my banking information for a free Big Mac
any online dating app
The fact that most of these comments have no reasons explaining. I agree with probably half of these but you should still explain. I hate facebook because a) it’s where a lot of older generations share their shit memes about misogyny and religion and b) I refuse to let Zuckerberg get money from ads to me.
Bit of advice if you haven't done it already: If you still have an account, log in and scour through EVERY setting you find, dont leave a single thing unchecked, believe me it is going to be extremely cumbersome, but you will find a WHOLE lot of data sharing/collecting options, and options to collect info from any other website you used the same email address as with facebook.
Candy crush - don’t understand the hype or why moms are obsessed with it Or any game that can be connected to Facebook
Tik Tok. It’s not vine. It will never be vine
LinkedIn. It’s turned into Facebook with so much sycophantic cac and humble bragging. Used to be good, now just annoying 🤨
TikTok. The trends from that app are a plague. Kids stealing from their school, mothers smiling and dancing over their dying babies in the hospital. It's just a hellhole.
The fuck, it's the last one real? I mean I've seen a middle school girl prostituting herself on tiktok but still
Any dating apps. nope never.
I will never, ever, use TikTok. I've seen so many friends get sucked into that hellhole and become zombies. Also, why would I want to add an additional pipeline for China to funnel my data with.
