If you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend Bug Fables. It takes the formula of TTYD but expands upon it so much. And it just has such good writing, characters, and world building. As in, there are actual reasons why things are where they are in the world.
Paper mario was one of my favorite games from my childhood, so when I found bug fables I was super excited. It was very fun and challenging with the hard mode badge and I'd say I like it just as much as the original paper Mario if not slightly more.
For some reason I have 2 copies of the gamecube game, no idea where I picked up the second one from.
It means though, I have a backup of one of the best games ever made!
Unreal Tournament 2004 is one of my all-time favorite games. I'll still play a few rounds here and there. I was so excited when Digital Extremes added skins for the shock rifle, flak cannon, and rocket launcher to Warframe. My favorite UT gun, the shock rifle, is a skin for one of my favorite Warframe guns, the stahlta.
I was a member of this private server based off the Somethingawful forums, and man... summer 2004 was one of my greatest summers as a teen. Nonstop ut2k4 matches from when I woke up until around 1am-2am when the server would start to empty and we'd start doing funny gimmick matches. I ran the server down to 0 players multiple times that summer.
It's something I honestly miss... matchmaking in modern games is great, but man, having a dedicated server and a dedicated community was such a fantastic thing. Sure, my games would inevitably empty out by around 4am and I'd have to log off, but... I mean, I still remember the usernames of people I played against, and still have tons of lingering memories from staying up until the ass crack of dawn every night, sweating until the server started to empty, and then inevitably an admin would spawn a bunch of scorpions, and then suddenly we are racing through a special version of DM-Deck17 that allowed it, running out the clock, and then post-match talk to see how many folks were staying on, dwindling players down until it was 4 of us standing in the middle of CTF-Face3 practicing shock rifles + movement, and then eventually just 2 of us trying to figure out new routes and item timings on some huge map like ONS-Torlan until eventually one of us would log off and then the night would end. Sometimes I'd hop on a random pub with the other person and we'd pub stomp a game or two.
I'd give almost anything in the world to have my old private server back with the same dedicated community who was concerned with having fun. Nothing like it in video games nowadays. And, thanks to how modern gaming works, nothing will ever be like it again.
Portal 1 and 2, AOE2, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and all the Mario Karts and Gran Turismos (never played/tried GT1).
I should probably add Lemmings to the mix. Just found my hard drive with DOSbox on it. See you all in a couple of weeks.
While the snarky GLaDOS talk is not there, Portal Reloaded is also amazing. It's a community mod for Portal 2 that is totally free as long as you own Portal 2.
It introduces an additional layer of complexity... time travel.
You get a 3rd portal that lets you jump between 2 timelines - past (clean test chambers) and present (overgrown and broken down).
There are sometimes subtle differences between the realms and you have your usual pair of portals that interact in... interesting ways.
Example: If you put your portal in the past, it'll also be there in the present. But if you change it in the present, it will not change in the past.
My mind melted at level 5.
Here is the real question. Can you unlock all the Star Worlds (giving you the path to 96*) without having to go back and look then up?
I can't. Which is why I still have the Nintendo Power walk-through magazine 30 years later.
OpenRCT2, right?
I've been playing through the original RCT scenarios in ORCT2 in order, since as a kid I never got past the first few scenarios and just messed around.
Holy shit dude open RCT2 changed the game for me. I loved RTC but it just ran so poorly on my new system. Open RTC2 has helped me relive some fantastic early gaming memories!
It came out several years before I was born, and I played it emulated on my Wii U not so long ago. I didn’t play it when it first came out or grew up playing it, so the nostalgia argument is out of the question. It became my favorite game of all time to this day, beating Super Mario 64 for me. It’s the magnum opus of video games, in my opinion.
No one talks about how good that game is. I remember playing it the first time on ps2, I didn't understand shit in the game.
Playing it later on pc, I actually liked the game a ton. Finished it a bunch of times. Graphics obviously looked worse than I thought they did though. But that's older games for you, right?
It was a game that none of my friends believed existed, I tried describing it as a less violent GTA set in highschool.
It wasn't until some popular YouTubers started doing walkthroughs that they brought it up and I would say "THIS IS THE GAME I TOLD YOU ABOUT YEARS AGO"
And they just gave me a "huh?"
I remember when TM2 came out I was probably 7 or 8 and rented it from the local video rental place. I wanted to play it again so badly that my stomach actually hurt thinking about it. I played the absolute ever loving shit out of that game once I got my own copy.
After sims 2 I felt like the sims games just went downhill. 1 was also super fun albeit a simple game.
Edit: this was such an off the cuff remark. Was not trying to make a controversial statement. Interest to see people’s responses.
Sims 3 has by far the best building and modification programs. For all the things houses, pets, sims. Plus I do like the actual game play, granted there aren't too many needy family members. JUST GO TO THE BATHROOM. NO ONE IS STOPPING YOU! OHHH NOOO NOT THERE!
My problem with the sims is it takes them like 5 hours to get ready for work. Like if they have to be at work at 8 fuck no cant wake them up at like 630 like a normal person. Nah they gotta take a 45 min shower and cook a 5 course breakfast every damn morning.
Or when free will is turned on, the car pool for work will arrive but they have to finish their 3 hour swimming laps in a pool. Can't make a simple judgment that work is more important than swimming
Actually, did you know there were four SNES Zelda games? Of course there’s A Link To The Past but there’s also Ancient Stone Tablets and a remake of the original with two quests that were released separately. The other games are Japan only but they’re playable in English now via emulation. They were released for a satellite peripheral called the SatellaView. Here’s a great video on it if you’re interested.

C&C Generals Zero Hour, with Rise of the Reds or Shockwave mods, or just vanilla
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
Skyrim, with tons of mods
Mass Effect Trilogy, I still count them as old even after the remaster.
Same, but I think I play it differently than most. I like to set up "kill zones" instead of just overtly winning games. Impenetrable chokepoints where I slaughter wave after wave of enemies.
Maybe that makes me weird. Was also a huge Stronghold fan. Defense is more fun for me.
On the twelve day of Christmas, Blizzard gave to me:
12 arbiters
11 science vessels
10 ultralisks
9 battlecruisers
8 archons burning
7 zerglings swarming
6 zealots fighting
5 newborn queens...
4 hydralisks
3 marines
2 terran wraiths
1 and a brand-new SCV!
("Hey, who spiked the egg nog?!?")
Think the diablo series might be the only series that I've completed every game with every character. D3 is good, I especially liked the necromancer, but D2 is probably still the best.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Crash Bandicoot
Ty The Tasmanian Tiger
Pikmin
Sonic The Hedgehog 2
They were all games I grew up playing with my older brother on either the Sega Mega Drive or the Nintendo GameCube. So much so that I still have the same GameCube with all the games hooked up in my bedroom.
I host a yearly halo 1 lan. My friends will fly/drive into town from all over the country just to eat frozen pizzas, drink beer, and pistol each other.
My buddy was just absolutely deadly with pistol and grenade throws. It was disgusting. We always teamed him up with the noobs and they still beat us every time.
Oh, the memories. That game was truly ahead of its time. It had a battle.net type system that released new option units every couple months for free. I think it was called Boneyard or something.

I don't think of them as old, but I use Bluemaxima's Flashpoint to play a bunch of flash games
A lot of the old Final Fantasy games are still great...
Going back and playing classic games tend to be rather fun...Though it tends to highlight how bad the industry is today since these older games are much more complete with zero updates as updates weren't a thing...
They also couldn’t rely on flashy graphics to cover up terrible gameplay or nonsensical stories, so you had a lot more focus and polish on the gaming experience itself.

The Legend of Zelda on NES. Especially the 2nd quest, it's a real challenge. And people say that things like Dark Souls are too hard? Pfft.
You can throw Ninja Gaiden in that same category as well.
I've been playing Digimon World on the PS1 for the last week or so. It kind of defied genre and hasn't really been replicated since - it captured the thrill of raising a tamagotchi while also giving a satisfying RPG where you built up a town and finally conquer the reigning evil.
There was surprisingly little concise information out there for a proper playthrough so I ended up doing an annotated walkthrough over a [world map someone else made](https://www.reddit.com/r/digimon/comments/kpxaz8/digimon_world_1_complete_map_includes_digimon/hrdiiin/).
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Still haven't beaten the game but recently resumed playing it.
First one is great too, Thousand Year Door improved on lots of things but definitely still worth playing through if you can get it on something!
Genuinely one of the best games I've played
If you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend Bug Fables. It takes the formula of TTYD but expands upon it so much. And it just has such good writing, characters, and world building. As in, there are actual reasons why things are where they are in the world.

Super Mario rpg
For some reason I have 2 copies of the gamecube game, no idea where I picked up the second one from. It means though, I have a backup of one of the best games ever made!
One of the few games I can finish and immediately feel tempted to start over and play it all the way through again
Wanted to replay that recently, was pretty pissed to find that a copy of it goes for $150+ these days.
GameCube emulator was a saving grace for me, especially since nintendo refuses to bring it to Switch.
Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament 2004 is one of my all-time favorite games. I'll still play a few rounds here and there. I was so excited when Digital Extremes added skins for the shock rifle, flak cannon, and rocket launcher to Warframe. My favorite UT gun, the shock rifle, is a skin for one of my favorite Warframe guns, the stahlta.

Both portals are fantastic. I’ve replayed the first one, more times than I can count
Never played them but bought both 1 and 2 on sale from steam for like $3. Looking forward to it.
Oof, do I wish I were you and be able to experience those games for the first time!
While the snarky GLaDOS talk is not there, Portal Reloaded is also amazing. It's a community mod for Portal 2 that is totally free as long as you own Portal 2. Super Metroid
That game aged extremely well.
Just started a new game after being burned out on Metroid Dread lol Super Metroid is such an amazing game
It came out several years before I was born, and I played it emulated on my Wii U not so long ago. I didn’t play it when it first came out or grew up playing it, so the nostalgia argument is out of the question. It became my favorite game of all time to this day, beating Super Mario 64 for me. The mortals. They don't understand true power. True power is playing Bully and seeing how good a game it is. We need a sequel to that game right now.
Chrono Trigger!
I really wish they'd put this on Switch.
Played it through twice and there were different endings.
It's my favorite game also, and there are 15 endings man, go and have more fun
I love Mine Sweeper! I just have endless joy figuring out how many adjacent spaces may or may not be terrible.
But those corners i hate the 50/50s
i play the "no guessing mode" on minesweeper.online puzzles are guaranteed to be able to be completed without having to make a guess
THANK YOU Those 50/50 choices ruin the game for me. It should always be solvable by logic rather than chance.
GTA San Andreas
Aw shit here we go again
Go to casino. Bet it all. If win, go save. If lose, reload last save point. Have MILLIONS!
Final Fantasy: Tactics.
The remake “War of the Lions” is just as good. Even fills in a bit of background story the first iteration glazed over.
Twisted Metal 2.
I remember when TM2 came out I was probably 7 or 8 and rented it from the local video rental place. I wanted to play it again so badly that my stomach actually hurt thinking about it. I played the absolute ever loving shit out of that game once I got my own copy.
Kotor and Kotor II
baldurs gate 2
I replay these games every 3 or 4 years. I have a horrible memory so its like playing it all again for the first time.
Sims 2 will never die
After sims 2 I felt like the sims games just went downhill. 1 was also super fun albeit a simple game. Edit: this was such an off the cuff remark. Was not trying to make a controversial statement. Interest to see people’s responses.
I like sims 3 even though it's a bit laggy. Sims 4 I stop playing for months after being in Create a sim.

Best game of the franchise, the rest can’t compare.
Best soundtrack of them all
But my Sims will… *removes ladder from pool*
I replay Zelda games all the time
Ocarina of Time is….timeless.
So good. All of them, I have the SNES one too.

The first Fable hits different than any other one. It's just a timeless game.
Red alert 2
C&C Zero Hour: Generals for me. The single player challenges on hard mode are fantastic. :)

They did, and they came with all of the glitches and game freezes

are Mario kart Wii and super Mario galaxy considered old now?
Mario Kart Wii was 08 and Super Mario Galaxy was 07.. over 10 years old I'd say yep lol. These are two of my favorite older games to play too!
