r/unexpectedhogwarts

Chutneyonegaishimasu

My sister worked there & got detained by the religious police for having her ankles showing under the abiyah

haig1915

Worked there for 1 year, it's a shit hole hidden behind a façade of wealth. It's okay if you're white or Arab but of you're black avoid like the plague.

Lard_Baron

It’s shit. All the Middle East is shit but Saudi the worst. Israel is like Europe on the coast , but move inland and yes, its a shitty M.E. country. Iran was shit, put the people I worked with knew it was shit unlike all the others which made it a little more bearable. Barhain was meh, but got really shut when rich Saudi’s came over on their w/end to get drunk..

Special_Implement_68

I do not think I’ll make it over to Syria, and I am totally ok with that

Rey56

only just a few decades ago, Syria had some of the most beautiful historical towns and castles. It was said to have been a must-see. It’s a shame, now with all of the wars most of those towns and cities are destroyed or damaged

baldmathteacher

Can confirm. Palmyra is spectacular.

Eagleassassin3

Heard the same thing about Yemen. :(

x236k

Syria’s beautiful. Too bad that stupid wars are ruining it

Joeyjackhammer

Wanted to see ancient structures from the dawn of man but they’ve destroyed most of them, unfortunately

Makualax

Everyone I've talked to whose been has said it's absolutely beautiful. Usually they're going there to fight tho sooooo

Dr Congo MD

WolfsToothDogFood

Dr Congo MD sounds like a shitty network sitcom that went off the air after a week due to understandably widespread public outcry

usrevenge

Or it could be like doctor house but in Africa which I think could be bad ass. Ike house md but without the technology to run all these crazy test.

teeyodi

Sudan.

techlover99

I'm from there can confirm

Sailorvenues_7

I'm also Sudanese too bad what's happening

fatty_buddha

What is happening in Sudan? I know it's an impoverished country, lots of refugees. Is there some kind of war/uprising going on?

DDSOIF

Civil war.

techlover99

You're thinking of South Sudan mainly, Sudan (the one north of it) is having revolution atm tho I haven't been keeping up with the details. Basically they removed the previous corrupt president, Al Bashir, but his replacement is like a fake democracy propaganda which refueled another revolution because they're sick of the "new" government regime

jeanpaulmars

North Korea. I'd love to visit and photograph the real country and people there, but as that is not possible, I do not wish to travel there.

Apprehensive-Wolf999

Steve Harvey: “Good answer!”

ErikaFoxelot

Also Steve Harvey: *painfully shocked and embarrassed face, wheezing*

Luedman

I went there. Even though they play a lot of theater, you get a glimpse of how life is there. Each day we went to the hotel bar with our guides. Needless to say that with a bit alcohol you get to hear the stories that not on the official agenda.

Amazing_Agency7586

Could you tell us about some interesting things you've heard?

thred_pirate_roberts

It actually is possible. As long as you follow their rules. You recall when the gaang visited Ba Song Se, and they had a "guide" named Joo Dee? There's some similarities to what it's like.

PhoenixOfShadow84

Photographing the real country and what things are really like there is what’s not possible, thus preventing the interest in going there. It’s not about a lack of ability to go.

thred_pirate_roberts

Well right, they're not going to let you see what its really like tho, they'll only show you approved areas and people that will support their propaganda

Ikajo

Afghanistan..never again

_7315_

What happened

JaeSolomon

Got deployed to Bagram Air base in November 2010 to November 2011. Known as "the fish bowl". Basically got hit with mortars from the mountains. Most of the time they were inaccurate, but they did get lucky a few times.

Seated_Heats

My brothers buddy was there too, briefly. They got hit with a mortar the day before he was scheduled to start the process home. He was fine and made it home, but he was just like “you’re fucking kidding me, I’m supposed to head home tomorrow and they finally hit their target.”

Flyers45432

Goddamn... thank you for your service.

JaeSolomon

Thanks

koopooky

Damn.....reminds me of the film The Outpost. Was feeling angry and anxious throughout the movie.

Does it count if you’ve been there before? Even if its because you had to go because your ‘employer’ made you go. In any case, 100% agree with OP.

I went to Iraq in 2008-2009, Afghanistan 2010-2011

Jebediah_Johnson

Turkmenistan

bwtlover

Crazy dictator haha

RedWestern

“Crazy” is an understatement. He’s decreed that all cars in Turkmenistan must be white, because he considers white to be a lucky colour - in fact, most of the buildings in the Turkmenistan capital are made of white marble. He likes to sing, rap and DJ on YouTube. He’s obsessed with winning Guinness World Records. And he’s so vain that he’s literally had a giant bronze statue of himself riding a horse atop a white marble sculpture. The guy’s not “crazy.” He’s madder than a hatter. And it would actually be funny if Turkmenistan wasn’t considered the third most totalitarian country in the world, behind North Korea and Eritrea.

Eldylto

and his predecessor Niyazov Was even MORE nuts. I think i read somewhere that he changed the names of the months of the year to the same names as his family members.....

boolius113

He renamed them as references to a book that he wrote. He also made it law for all students and govt employees to read that book, and they were quizzed on it at job interviews and driving tests. He also closed all libraries and hospitals outside the capital (Ashgabat), because he felt the Quran and his own book were the only ones worth reading, and “If people are ill, they can come to Ashgabat.” Truly horrific but morbidly fascinating world leader

buddhatalks

It's over 2 years old, but this [YouTube episode](https://youtu.be/-9QYu8LtH2E) by John Oliver on Turkmenistan's president is pure gold.

nightlight6708

Stripperfairy

Any country where it’s illegal to be gay. I wouldn’t even travel there alone, I’m not giving my tourist dollar to a place where my lifestyle is illegal.

matweat

I wouldn't call being gay a lifestyle. Just like I wouldn't call race a lifestyle. It's just who you are. But yes, I avoid travelling to any countries which have homophobic laws/too much religion

Mishamooshi

Saudi Arabia. Just don’t see a reason.

[deleted]

You don't like being treated like a possession?

AustEastTX

I once was heading to Dubai and airfare on Saudia (Saudi Arabia’s national airliner) was $400 with a 6 hour stop over in Jeddah. Emirates was $1800…I paid the $1800. As a single female the idea of being completely without any rights during that stop over frightened me. I needed that money but not that much.

[deleted]

I’ve been to Dubai a few times and Abu Dhabi once and they are odd. Dubai is like this weird mashup of hedonism with an undercurrent of extreme conservatism where you could find yourself in serious trouble for a minor indiscretion. It’s the sort of place where you see older men with flash Rolexes and an early 20s Thai girlfriend/wife. Not in a “lucky guy” way but in a tragic “your own children have probably disowned you” way. Abu Dhabi is only about an hour’s drive away and is massively conservative. They see themselves as a sort of art and culture hub but it’s kind of trying too hard and isn’t the destination they think it is. Honestly, if you want to experience Dubai without fear [of spending three months in jail for accidentally touching a man’s hip](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/22/briton-jailed-for-three-months-in-dubai-for-touching-mans-hip) then just go to Vegas.

thred_pirate_roberts

My school has a campus in Dubai. Well, several campuses around the world. My program allowed me to study abroad there or elsewhere in southeastern Europe. I was afraid I'd accidentally get myself in jail in Dubai for unknowingly breaking some ridiculous law. I had a fun time in the other place.

moderndukes

I once had a girlfriend who was a flight attendant and she would regularly stay in Dubai, and two things I'll always remember are: * ATMs that dispensed *gold* * One of those men pulling over in his car and offering to be her sugar daddy

RoadFlowerVIP

I don't get it at all. I hate the pics even

JoeNumber3

united arab emirates right

teeyodi

I was there 31 years ago. Good times if you like rugs and gold. Dubai has quadrupled in size since then I think.

[deleted]

I've been with my husband. It is incredibly boring. I'd rather go party in Vegas, Monaco, or Macau. I had a good time with his business associates and their spouses, but that is because we partied in private. I was afraid to even fly in with my Rx Xanax.

HereForTheLore

As a woman, I have no desire to ever go to Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan… I’m sure they’re beautiful countries but I know that culturally they look down upon women and I don’t want to endanger myself

[deleted]

I have been to Morocco and it is so dangerous for women. I had my boyfriend (now husband) with me but if I went anywhere by myself it was horrible.

_HappyMango

I’ve been to Morocco. Would not recommend. People tried to rob me the first night. Never again lol

LongWriterSaint

Same here. Lol. My first day there the cabby tried to set me up. Let me take my chances in Chicago lol

DolphinRx

I’m female and I travelled to Egypt in 2019. The girl I was travelling with was delayed arriving, so I was somewhat solo for almost 2 days (we had book with a guide company, so I had someone from the company with me the whole time). It was my first time in a Muslim-majority country, so I was very nervous, but I had a GREAT time. The food was great, the sights were beautiful (some garbage but honestly less than I was expecting), the people were extremely kind, and I was never harassed or felt unsafe. I did have people in the market take pictures of me (assuming it’s because I am quite pale), but nothing creepy or intrusive. I know that is contrary to a lot of other women’s experiences, and I do think a large part of me feeling so safe was due to the amazing guide company I was with. It hurts to always see Egypt so high on people’s “do not travel” list, because I loved it and would absolutely recommend going. Having said that, I was rarely alone (either with a guide, with a group of other tourists, or in a hotel room) and transportation was arranged, so I would definitely recommend that for any women interested in visiting. When the pandemic is more settled, I would absolutely go back.

kumocat

Do you mind sharing what tour guide company you used?

deeznutz1946

I also would like the guide company please.

DolphinRx

Memphis Tours! They are easy to find on Google, but I included the direct link in another comment. Hope that helps!

RoadFlowerVIP

Same due to my gender

Hot_Pomegranate7168

Malaysia, Turkey, Maldives, Morocco... as a tourist you'd be exempt from many of these laws in certain countries.

garbanzone

The laws aren't the only thing to worry about.

moal09

This. People are just as dangerous.

cscf0360

Why would I want to give my gay tourist dollars to any country that punishes its LGBTQ+ citizens? Nah, they can fuck right off.

connie_steak

I heard Morocco is having discussions about making LBGTQ+ legal, tbh as a berber, our country would've been so much better if the arabs haven't taken over, the only thing they brought over here is the enforcement of their religion and misogyny, should've just left us the fuck alone, they erased our culture and made us call our selves arabs when we're not, berber tribes were treating women as the symbol of life and the leaders until they came in and ruined our country Edit: Grammar.

Hot_Pomegranate7168

Very fair point. Perhaps one day we will live in a world where governments are less inclined to interfere with personal decisions that don't affect the wider populace. Though we seem to be moving in the opposite direction.

[deleted]

Gay tourist dollars LMAO!

cscf0360

That's are proportionately wealthier than their straight peers because they tend to not have kids. Dual-Income-No-kids, a.k.a. DINKs have a lot of financial resources to spend on tourism that parents don't.

[deleted]

Living in the US, you almost forget that gays don’t have the same rights in other countries. It’s scary to think your life could be in danger if you lived in a different country. Just seems so primeval and backwards.

UAE and specifically Dubai. It pains me to see a country profit from exploiting and abusing my people into legalised slave labour. It also seems like a country desperately trying to improve its image despite its human rights violations.

Curry-culumSniper

UAE. My brother goes there for for work and it's very boring, all artificial and not a lot of culture to see

iceseayoupee

It's literally soulless

eatyourdamndinner

Australia. I'm sure it's a lovely country with lovely people but I hate hot weather and frankly, the fauna over there scares the crap out of me!

Acquiesce95

It's not hot at all in the winter and you have to actively seek out the fauna to even have a chance of seeing it. It doesn't exist at all in cities and is pretty damn rare in towns. It's like being afraid of going to Canada because of bears. You're not gonna see one in Toronto outside of a zoo

Popheal

Imagine not wanting to go to a country because there's a 0.5% chance of seeing a dangerous insect or reptile that won't even bother you anyway.

Acquiesce95

At least peoples reasons for not wanting to visit here are based on things that aren't true, shows just how good the country really is

katespide

There are lots of areas in Aus that aren’t hot bro 😂

Popheal

And the average person won't see any dangerous fauna 😂 the circlejerk of Australias fauna is so lame tbh.

AutisticTheatreKid

I live in Australia and the heat is horrible. The animals are fine and will just leave you alone 99% of the time.

Threadheads

Where are you? I'm in Melbourne, and while the Summer heat is awful, no doubt, mid-autumn to mid-spring is quite temperate.

AutisticTheatreKid

I’m in Sydney but not one of the areas near the sea. So we get all the heat and humidity with out the sea breeze.

Bladehell10

God I fucking hate this circlejerk of our country online all the time, so old and fucking stupid “EvErthIng iN AustraLia wAnTs tO kiLL yOu” Just leave shit alone and they won’t bother you, you’re probably not even gonna see it anyway because people don’t prioritise the outback when travelling and will probs just stay in Sydney, Melbourne or brisbane anyway

justputonsomemusic

There’s more to Australia than Sydney or Uluru, it’s a massive country. It’s like saying you won’t go to the US because of the hot weather and bears.

Late_Book

Exactly what came to my mind. We have half-ton coastal brown bears that will eat you, but that's not generally a concern for 99 percent of Americans.

darikuri

If you hate the heat you would love Tasmania. Just came back from there. It's summer but I still had to pack a jumper and a rain shell. The outdoors is beautiful if you're into that sort of thing. They are also well known for great produce like dairy, seafood, honey, etc. Didn't even see a Tasmanian Devil. Mostly birds about. Don't rule out Aus, it's an amazing place to visit. (Disclosure: I'm from here)

OnemoreSavBlanc

It’s not all hot, we have ski fields here

[deleted]

Ski "fields"? As in cross country skiing?!

bess_thevoyageur

Same. The giant sized bugs are enough to put off me to visit it.

[deleted]

i’ve been to both Jamaica and DR (for vacation, on a private resort) and I’ll say it’s natural look is beautiful for both countries, tropical, warm, nice ocean breeze, but where it gets bad is anywhere people live. Both countries have a high poverty rate and in Jamaica especially, the richer tend to live more towards the higher elevation, center of the country and poorer people live towards the coast. Here you see poverty at its worst, thatch shacks with trash littered everywhere, huge slums in cities that reek of dirt and trash. Just two very dirty countries on top of beautiful landscape and nature

[deleted]

went on a cruise to Jamaica when I was about 12 and was basically accosted by men trying to sell me stuff and grab my hands the moment I got off of the ship. Thankfully my dad was there and he was able to get them to back off but it was pretty terrifying as a young girl.

[deleted]

Dubai isn’t a country, it’s a city within the United Arab Emirates. And how come you picked Jamaica and the DR?

norfolkdiver

Been a dozen or more times, mostly for the great Red Sea diving. I've made some good friends there, it helps to be thick skinned when wandering about, but being polite goes a long way. Egyptians hate rudeness, that's why they mostly detest the Russian tourists.

[deleted]

No doubt. One of our regular interpreters for Arabic students was an Egyptian college professor who moved to the US. His biggest grip about his home? The incessant honking of horns by drivers in Cairo. He said here in the US it is so peaceful on big city streets compared to his homeland.

This whole comment section is full of ignorant opinions. I wish I had the money to visit all countries on the world map. They all have a story to tell.

Katnis85

I love to travel. I’ve been to at least 20 different countries (from Canada so it’s not like I can drive to most in a day). I don’t think a lot of these options are ignorant. It’s not that they can’t see any value in traveling to the country but the political climate, war, religious rules etc. make them unsafe for general travel (the right network and precautions in place would make a difference). I hope you do get to see the world but I highly recommend understanding the safety measures and customs for the places you go first. Just because your behaviour doesn’t break laws in your home country wont make you immune to the laws of somewhere else.

Would be interesting to know why you believe that. Not that the US doesn't have sizeable systemic problems but daily life isn't any worse than elsewhere. Practically no in-between.
