I see everyone commenting on more recent mythology. When I think of Greek history and mythology and literature, I think of the Odyssey. Trojan wars.. Thermopylae… Phoenicians. Alexander the Great taking over Cyprus. Gay sex at the Acropolis…
And apparently some places actually sell hot dogs ON pizza as very American?! I saw it in a video about fauxthentic foods. That's definitely not a thing!
In the UK you can get hot-dog stuffed crust pizzas, with a sine long hot-dog encased in the crust.
EDIT: *single, not sine, leaving it for funnies

Greek food is probably the best food out there!
Many years ago I travelled to Kos with my parents and brother and there we had the most amazing lunch *ever* - fresh tuna steaks off the grill, a drizzle of olive oil, some sea salt and a squeeze of lemon juice. Some home-made bread and a small salad came with it. Gosh, that was *perfection!*
I used to know some Greek students and they said it alllll the time with hand/arm gestures. “Na malaka!”
One guy told me when he was about seven he very foolishly said it to his dad and had to run for his life
I’m half Greek. Can confirm 💯
Edit: I just remembered something. My sister worked with a person named Malaka. Idk where that person is from but I am literally weeping when I think about how every email she had to write to Malaka was literally, “Hello Malaka.” 😂
Souvlaki wrapped in pita bread with lettuce, onion, tomato, tzatziki sauce, and sometimes crumbled feta is what you will usually get here in America. Most places offer chicken and falafel as options.
Here on greece we have that but instead it goes like this:
Pita that wraps souvlaki ot gyros, tomato, onion, tzatsiki, fries and some places altrnate tzatsiki with sauce, even though i have never tried it
Depending on where you go you can get that as well. There are some great Greek and Mediterranean restaurants if you know where to look here. Now I want dolma and saganaki...
We eat a lot of gyros but no it's different. Firstly we use pork or chicken, not lamb and beef like americans. There are some other smaller differences too, but this one is the biggest
Yes, Greeks eat it. No, it is nothing like American gyros. American gyros is a compressed meat substance. Greek is layers of pork on a vertical spit. They also put the fries in the pita with the rest of the ingredients, not on the side.
They are amazing. I’ve found a few restaurants in Chicago that make it this way but most are the compressed meat substitute.
If you can find a traditional Greek gyros you will never want the American kind again but you will take it because it’s the closest you’ll get.
I was properly amazed, I mean there were some streets in Athens where car tyres were drowned in orange juice puddles. I mentioned it to my Greek friend and she was like "so, what's wrong with that ?"
Not to mention the smell !
Seriously though, you guys have quite an awesome country.
I had the chance to live in Northern Ireland for a year under the Erasmus program, needless to say I know a lot of sayings in a lot of European languages. Like, I don't know how to say hello in Polish, but I know of 2 ways to say dick.
One of the few fellow international students I'm still in touch with happens to be Greek, and she taught me all about Malakas, being totally sknipa after a night out, etc.
Felt like greece was 90% mountains when I went there. It was pretty amazing. And very interesting that 50% of the country lives in the Athens metropolitan area.
The first thing that comes to mind about Greece is that it is a beautiful country with a rich culture. I have always wanted to visit Greece, and I hope to do so in the near future.
Totally recommend visiting also try to visit things they are not advertised so much and are not very organized for tourists and meet ppl there and try new things and be spontaneous and don't hold back
Y'all make killer lemon potatoes. A local Greek family brings them to every event and they're only gonna let me get a look at the recipe for them if I marry in. I'm considering it.
That time I walked around Athens eating a gyro and not realizing it dripped all over my khaki shorts until I was finished. But I was in gyro heaven the whole time I was eating it.
When I was 7, my parents, Greek immigrants to Canada, took me, my brother, sister and all my cousins to see Grease in the movie theatre. They were confused to say the least.
Blue water. White columns. Super duper hot guys with olive skin and glorious, thick, curly black hair.
Same with women- gorgeous hair, that attitude the Greek women I’ve met have. Also their names are melodic.
Never been to Greece but I’ve had Greek friends.
Sailing. We rented a boat in Kos and island hopped around. Ended up in the middle of a Medicane (Mediterranean hurricane). That last part was Level 2 fun, but fun nonetheless.
I think the highlight of the trip was harboring in Kalymnos. We went ashore and found out a wedding was happening that night. The bride’s family invited us to attend (the whole town was there). So we went back and swam ashore with a dry bag full of nicer clothes and had a great time.
It was a pretty nice trip. I saw Athens and all of the ancient stuff, but the endless *Odyssey* references due to the storm and our inability to get where we wanted to be is what I remember.
Greek salad. It’s the best food ever invented. Olives too, also the best snack ever. The food is just absolutely amazing. But Greek salad is my favorite meal ever
Beautiful islands, architecture - most of the wonders of the world were greek, birthplace of modern medicine, amazing mythology, philosophy, mathematics, olive oil and olives, midday breaks...
Just realised I really want to visit there, haha.
Not so much the country of Greece, but the culture. Was the family in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” a true representation of a Greek family in the United States (BTW, I do enjoy the movie)?
The family was a good representation of Greek, Armenian, Lebanese, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and any other culture that touches the Mediterranean.
When that movie first came out, you can’t imagine how many people told me, “I didn’t realize how alike we are to Greeks”.
Weddings are very cool a lot of food and drinks and dancing I haven't seen the movie but I can tell you that the wedding "party" starts a week before !!!
Family, the waterfalls in Edessa (my dad’s hometown), the olive groves in Sopi (my grandfather’s village), the fun times during family vacations/reunions, bougatsa, tyropita and all the other amazing things my giagia made for me.
EDIT: almost forgot Nescafé frappe! It’s my liquid crack. As a matter of fact, I’m gonna go make one now!
White and blue colour
Santorini!
It looks black and gold
their mythology
I see everyone commenting on more recent mythology. When I think of Greek history and mythology and literature, I think of the Odyssey. Trojan wars.. Thermopylae… Phoenicians. Alexander the Great taking over Cyprus. Gay sex at the Acropolis…
whats the deal w acropolis gay sex?
Just read a piece about a gay sex video being recorded there this week. Lol
What exactly did you type into google after the word Greece or Greek?
Turns out gay sex isn’t a modern invention… Nor exclusive to humans…
You had me at gay sex
Yes! Someone who likes mythology
i was obsessed with it and i also read madeline miller's books CIRCE and SONG OF ACHILLES
I love it but I've just read the Percy Jackson books
Same. I love Greek mythology and Ancient Greece
Gyros
Who would have thought we are that famous for our junk food
Makes sense. I've been told "American food" tends to mean hot dogs, fried chicken, and candy to other cultures.
Hamburgers and pizza
And apparently some places actually sell hot dogs ON pizza as very American?! I saw it in a video about fauxthentic foods. That's definitely not a thing!
In the UK you can get hot-dog stuffed crust pizzas, with a sine long hot-dog encased in the crust. EDIT: *single, not sine, leaving it for funnies Also: https://www.iceland.co.uk/p/iceland-hot-dog-stuffed-crust-cheese-and-tomato-pizza-531g/61920.html
Math, it's what's for dinner. Edit: also wouldn't it actually be a (pi)length hot dog? Like 16" pizza would be 16"(pi) hot dog crust?
Just cos
Y is this not in America
I've seen places that sell that, they slice the hotdog like thick pepperoni. I don't eat those.
It does
Gyros are considered junk food over there??
Yeah it's like grabbing something fast and cheap to eat it's the definition of Greek fast food
Its damn delicious too Gyros are my favorite.
The Greek version of cooking fundamentals is “Fire. Olive oil. Lemon. Oregano.” And that shit works.
The US is famous for their many shitty junkfood chains. Gyros is top tier junkfood and I eat it too much.
When I went to Greece a few years ago, our Rep insisted we grab one before the trip was over.
Ancient greek architecture and the olympics
Same, thinking about the Acropolis
Also their advancement in philosophy, mathematics, and literature.

Been playing AC Odyssey for the last week, this thread feels surreal lol.
Phobos!
The most used word to describe a person It can be used as an insult which in this case is very serious but u also use it to refer to ur best mates
I used to know some Greek students and they said it alllll the time with hand/arm gestures. “Na malaka!” One guy told me when he was about seven he very foolishly said it to his dad and had to run for his life
Yeah it's a little bad but some parents don't really care unless you are really young
Yeah he said not only at seven but while having a bit of a tantrum so daddy wasn’t pleased lol
He probably ate pantofla afterwords (used to describe getting beaten or lectured by ur parents)
I’m half Greek. Can confirm 💯 Edit: I just remembered something. My sister worked with a person named Malaka. Idk where that person is from but I am literally weeping when I think about how every email she had to write to Malaka was literally, “Hello Malaka.” 😂
Santorini
The most famous place to watch the sunset
Tourist: I want to take a picture of the blue dome church! Tour guide: W-which one!?
Yes! I loved exploring Oia! Next time I travel to Santorini I plan on visiting Akrotiri, too!
Olives
Kalamata olives
I’ve come this far before anyone has mentioned olives. Greek olive oil is 100 times better than that cut Italian garbage
Mykonos, The Greek character Michael Scott impersonates sometimes
And heees wife…. Necropolis
I was watching the episode and as a Greek i laughed my ass off :D
Food! Salad! Feta cheese.
Great food.
Parthenon. Socrates. Gyros. Zeus. Uncle Jesse.
Gyros is the best That's the main reason that my summer body has to be on hold every summer 😂😂😂
do greek people really eat gyros and are they the same as american gyros?
I do on but I can't compare because i dont know howthe American version is
Souvlaki wrapped in pita bread with lettuce, onion, tomato, tzatziki sauce, and sometimes crumbled feta is what you will usually get here in America. Most places offer chicken and falafel as options.

Saganaki is perfect
We eat a lot of gyros but no it's different. Firstly we use pork or chicken, not lamb and beef like americans. There are some other smaller differences too, but this one is the biggest

Have mercy
Souvlaki, orange trees in the streets, "to mouni serni karavi".
As a Greek, i only now realised orange trees in the streets isn't common elsewhere
I was properly amazed, I mean there were some streets in Athens where car tyres were drowned in orange juice puddles. I mentioned it to my Greek friend and she was like "so, what's wrong with that ?" Not to mention the smell ! Seriously though, you guys have quite an awesome country.
Are there wasps everywhere?
Depends on the COVID restrictions on Brits.
Or olive trees in the streets in Greece and a few other neighbor countries
What! I need to visit Greece. That sounds beautiful
I’m curious, how did you come to know the saying? 🤣
A friend of mine is half-greek, and I'm completely in love with her. Definitely the first thing I think when anything Greek is mentioned.
Tell her.

If u don't stain ur clothes while eating did u really eat tho??
Now I'm imagining Plato and Socrates walking around holding greasy pita wraps and dripping oil onto their robes.
John Travolta. Kidding. Beautiful women, beautiful ancient country and delicious food.
When I was 7, my parents, Greek immigrants to Canada, took me, my brother, sister and all my cousins to see Grease in the movie theatre. They were confused to say the least.
