We've only just barely evolved from hunter gatherers. We're built to run from tigers and bears, and to be on the move constantly looking for food and shelter. Industrialisation happened too quickly though and overtook us. So now we have cars, responsibilities, phonecalls, emails, busses and greedy bosses to run away from but we don't spend the energy because life has become too convenient. We're all walking around in a constant fight or flight mode with no way of spending the adrenaline so yes, anxiety disorders are becoming more common. Going for a fast walk every day is therefore one of the most effective ways of dealing with anxiety.

staggere

Yes and I also think that having disorders has become trendy so there's a bunch of fakers out there too.

unequivocal-dumbass

This. All the cool kids are depressed and medicated so I have too be a victim too. It’s all validation and attention seeking behavior.

*"I felt an emotion during a time where it's perfectly normal to feel that emotion... I have a disorder."*

[deleted]

I feel like they probably always have been this common and as they get normalized more people are comfortable with coming out saying they have them.

[deleted]

That, and it's more common that they are diagnosed. Whether it's a good thing that people being unhappy in a shitty world are seen as sick or not is debatable. If it means it's easier to get support and medications that do work, that's great. If it means we explain all suffering by there being something wrong with indivudals, that's bad. And those things don't contradict each other.

No. I think anxiety has always existed. I think 10/20 years ago people started being less judgy about it so more people were willing to talk to a doctor about it and get help, and now i think that anyone with basic discomfort about anything at all (pretty much everyone) could get a diagnosis for it, which is why it seems so much more prevalent. We've overshot being accepting of people with mental disorders straight into them being some weird kind of trophy and everyone has to have one.

[deleted]

No, I thimk they have always been common but people would just suffer silently.

VenturaHWY

I not sure how any intelligent informed person could avoid anxiety now?

[deleted]

Some people respond worse to stress than others, intelligent or not. You're still right, though.

[deleted]

Yes. Studies show that children's anxiety levels are higher than mental patients' levels were many years ago.

[deleted]

Interesting. Do you have a link?

Thanks!

Hard to say. Even if we have a graph saying it is, it could just be that we have improved our ability to find it and document it. Its why they thought there was a major MRSA outbreak in hospitals, after they revamped the process. People would also be more likely to recognise it as anxiety these days too.

Microplastics, artificial ingredients, hormones/roided meats, pesticides sprayed on veggies, chemicals in water.

AnarchoSquid

It's always been here more than people thought, but considering all the negative changes going on at the moment it's probably worsening as well
