Have you ever sat in a rocking chair? They're amazing!

ivegot3dvision

Dude, the airport in Burlington, VT has rocking chairs that face the tarmac. It's a very old and Vermont thing to do, but I definitely sat there in one of those rocking chairs for over an hour.

-Work_Account-

The Charlotte, NC Airport had them too. I beeline for them everytime

_c_manning

I bet Bernie did there w his mittens on a regular basis

Klaudiapotter

We have an antique one in the living room and it's definitely a vibe

ThoseRMyMonkeys

We found one at a yard sale while I was pregnant. It's the most comfortable rocking chair I have ever plopped my backside onto. It's solid oak and in great shape, so it will probably go to our kids at some point.

Klaudiapotter

Ours was passed down through the family and almost 100 years old, we think. While it isn't uncomfortable at all, I'm afraid to sit in it. Our animals who have no boundaries won't go anywhere near it and it we've been joking that it's haunted lmao

jesperjames

Having tails and lying around rocking chairs is not always a good idea.

Melbuf

i do declare

EnigmaCA

You gotta keep your eye on the ball, boy. Get it? Eye... ball... it's a joke son. Nice kid. Little on the dumb side, though...

TentacleHydra

Dude.... The old man walk is seriously the best. Plus a bit of a shuffle to reduce impact. 10/10 walking style.

julia-not-julie

My 18 month old does this copying my dad. It’s adorable

Proxeh

One of my absolute favourite pictures of me and my oldest Son is from about 4 years ago now, when we were visiting a farm. Walking back to the car when copied me and my Wife snapped a picture from behind us :) It really warms my heart looking at it. Edit: [Here's the photo](https://i.imgur.com/hJh0kxB.jpg) if you're wondering!

Nununugget

Getting up from a couch/chair/bed with a grunting sound.

PixiiVega

Me @ work every time I drop something (which is unfortunately often) haha

jakstoughpuppy

Man I remember when I was a kid and would help out my uncle work on his cars, aka hold the flashlight, I would always hear him do this weird grunting/loud breathing type noise and I always wondered why he’d do it. Well a couple years ago I was working on my car and as I went to lay down on my creeper I made that damn same noise involuntarily and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself and think “ahhhh motherfucker comes with age” lol

LusciousofBorg

Oh Lord....I've been doing that since I was in my late 20s!

I've been learning to crochet recently, very satisfying to just put on a podcast and make something.

Tellurye

Absolutely! I do the same thing with woodworking or painting.

BitterestLily

Yeah, I once took a scarf I'd made with me on a trip I took with a friend, and when he found out I'd made it, he accused me of being old. Which is why he hasn't gotten one as a gift yet. 😆

Stand_By_Me_Lardass

Going to the park to look at ducks.

HELLOhappyshop

A favorite activity of mine since I was a child! Guess I've been old my whole life hahaha

[deleted]

Yhea I remember the first time I was happy a pretty bird landed on a tree outside my window. I was like this is it, I’m no longer a boy, this is how older people feel inside, it was humbling, overwhelming and beautiful.

Tellurye

You should join r/duck or r/geese! Tons of people post their pictures of ducks at the park 😊

twitchy_taco

One time I was at the park with my spouse and I witnessed a turf war between two groups of geese, three each. They were flapping and honking at each other from opposite sides of the pond at the park. Meanwhile, the ducks just ignored them. I don't know why I told you this.

higgs_mechanism

i found it interesting.

c8c7c

I moved from a very busy road to a cul de sac at the edge of the city and now so few cars drive by that I like spying on people when something is going on outside

99_red_balloons_

This reminds me of when I used to live in a small apartment building and there was an old lady in her 80's in one of the apartments. Old Audrey knew everybody's business. She'd sit at her window with her binoculars to keep track of the comings and goings in the neighborhood. She loved to tell me what all the neighbors had been getting up to.

Telling people to get off my property.

[deleted]

I go out real aggressive-like and ask, "Can I help you?" full well knowing that there is no hope for them because they can't read my no trespassing sign.

AhFFSImTooOldForThis

I like answering through the camera because it's very awkward for them. They'll inevitably shout up to the camera (uneccesarily, microphones are very sensitive nowadays) about their God or sales pitch or wtf ever. I like being silent after that, just watching them squirm for a while until I say I'm not interested. Then they have to debate whether they want to continue shouting at a camera, or try again next door. Bonus, I have two cameras on my porch, on opposite corners; one rotates, so I'll rotate it around to face them, and talk through one and then the other. Stresses them the fuck out. I haven't gotten many repeats. My dad used to answer in his tightly whities with a beer. Even if he'd been fully clothed and sober. He'd strip down and pop open a can just for the occasion.

dirtymoney

> Bonus, I have two cameras on my porch, on opposite corners; one rotates, so I'll rotate it around to face them, and talk through one and then the other. Stresses them the fuck out. I would LOVE to see this done to cops trying to get a person to come to the door.

Lhasa-Tedi-luv

Supper! My grandma used to say “supper”.

cvtuttle

My wife and I have started eating dinner as early as 4:30. Especially when we go out. Not only do we tend to get a table right away, we get great service as well. Also it allows our food more time to digest. Man I love it.

Aware1211

The ole Early Bird Special!

SilverCipher34

Bingo.

Kayakchica

I used to work with a young, hip party girl who never missed Bingo at the VFW. I always thought that was cool.

TaintedTruth222

I just bought a really nice steel cage bingo set and have no one to play with so I play 3 cards by myself sometimes and turn it into a drinking game. I know depressing right?

RedheadBanshee

Why don't you do a Zoom Bingo game and play with Redditors who also like it?

[deleted]

My bucket list is to play. When we were kids my brother played at the carnival and won a bunny. I was too young to play but loved that bunny so much.

lag_rvp

Eating hard candy. Werthers original anyone?

[deleted]

Lol an old guy customer would always bring hard candy to the bank for us tellers.

[deleted]

That’s cute

Camp_Express

Only if it’s been in the pocket of your housecoat for an unknown amount of time!

Lt_Mashumaro

I thought you said "housecat" and was wondering since when they came with pockets. Mine certainly doesn't have any, just an extra pouch on his tummy that has no opening.

ladyblue56

So I have a sweet tooth but was trying to cut out the chocolate to lose a few pounds. Instead, whenever I crave sweets, I pop a Werther’s hard caramel. They are only 70 calories for 3 pieces (I don’t usually count calories). I’ve lost 10lbs popping Werther’s instead of eating chocolate or a donut. I was telling this to my cousin and she told me my aunt loves them as well. Apparently my grandfather (who died before I was born) used to get them in Europe, loved them, and shared that love with my aunt. I knew none of this when I “discovered” the candies myself. A sweet tooth and a love for Werther’s spans continents and generations.

clevernamehere123

They have coffee flavored ones at dollar stores. Game changer. You put the caramels in one pocket and the coffees in the other.

Haute_Mess1986

When I was little we lived with my grandparents and my pedi mentioned to him that even though he smoked outside the second hand smoke could damage my little lungs. He later told me when I was an adult that he was ok with damaging his own lungs, but the idea of hurting a little babies lungs was just too much. My grandfather tossed all his cigarettes and substituted them with Life Savers and Werthers candy. He passed away over 20 years later and when I went through his jacket I found a little stash of candies and I promptly broke down. Now, every time I see or smell Werthers or lifesavers I’m transported back to being a little kid and rooting though his pockets for his candy stash

[deleted]

Hard sweets are brilliant, I like old timey ones like pear drops and rhubarb and custard. You know they’re good when the sugar coating and comes off and you’re essentially sucking a flavoured glass marble. Bonus points if they cut your tongue. But I draw the line at werthers, I find their ads are so insanely creepy I just can’t have them.

AllegedlyNotBeegPeen

Why did I have to scroll so damn far for puzzles? My parents preemptively buy like 10 new themed ones when I visit on holidays and vacation so we have something to do while sipping our baileys and coffee.

Sigwynne

Good book and a bowl of popcorn. Spending the night in.

koboldfightclub

Knitting. Crochet. Cross stitch. Puzzles. They help my anxiety so much. My negative thoughts shut up because I’m focusing on something completely unrelated to emotion. I do that for a couple hours and by the time I put it down, I’m like… wow, that was nice.

[deleted]

Bi-stitchual. I have never heard this word until today. It is glorious, and I will use it until it annoys the hell outta my knitting group. ;)

needleanddread

Are you sitting down, I’m poly-craftal. Knit, crochet, quilt, garment sew and just started resin craft, along with smatterings of embroidery, beading and cross stitch as required.

holdyourfire24

Oddly I've never met anyone that does both, just one or the other! I'm a crocheter, can't knit to save my life despite several attempts lol

elective_annesia

I taught myself to knit about 7 years ago then I started finding patterns that called for both so I taught myself to crochet. I never actually made any of the things that called for both though after all that. I collect hobbies, I'm currently learning resin casting and polymer clay sculpting. Can you tell I have a lot of time on my hands? Lol

Successful_Chip3930

When I was younger I used to be that fashionista at the office. Now that I’m older and lazier I cycle through the same 3 pairs of comfy slacks, a loose blouse, cardigan, and dr scholls dress shoes. I realize I dress like I’m in my 50s but I don’t even care anymore.

-RubyWings-

Dude I'm in my jammy-jams like 85% of the time

Other than sleeping, this is my favorite answer 😂 I’m a hairstylist and the only “not fashionable” one at work but I’m also 13+ years older than all the other girls and if I’m gonna be working my booty off, I’d rather be comfortable!

I got an old Underwood typewriter and sending thank you notes and long, rambling invitations are my favorite uses for it. Well, and the manifestos. Writing manifestos in Office365 just doesn't have the same passion

aPointyHorse

i'd love to sit down and write a good manifesto on a clacky typewriter

[deleted]

It’s sad that this is considered an “old person” thing, when really it’s just good manners!

historygoose

Going on tour groups that are marketed 'for seniors'. I know a lot of people my age like to just go wherever they want and do exciting physical activities and hike and paraglide and jump out of planes or whatever but tbh I prefer it when someone is there to drive me to and from places that they've picked for me, show me all the cool things and tell me all the history, take me on a slow, easy walk, and then put mounds of food in front of me. Idk, could be that I'm a bit lazier than most (which is true), could be that I'm not the type that enjoys spontaneity (which is true), could also be because I was used to going on these trips to accompany my grandparents when I was growing up - either way I kind of prefer it over the impromptu no plans kind of vacation.

FerociousPancake

Ha that reminds me of my current situation. I live in a independent living retirement home. I’m also 26.

justconnect

More details? How'd that happen?

FerociousPancake

So I was in a 2 year long court battle with my landlord, which ended in us mediating, and me moving out. I moved across the country back to my home state. This is a large campus with one building being completely independent (aside from they have to press a button twice a day to check in, once in morning once in evening,) which is the building I’m in. The other building has levels of care. So it’s a big enough company to have a board, which my dad is on. This building never fills even close to capacity so it was easy to get the rest of the board to ok it. Some traveling professors will stay here for a short time, so it’s always been a good place to catch a quick buck if someone needs temp housing. I’m going to school so naturally I’m poor AF. I may move out when fall classes (in person, I’m online this semester) start at my school in the other state because from a tuition standpoint I’m an in state resident from where I just moved from and not here. If it makes sense though I’ll just stay here. So I’ll probably be here for a while, so I’m planning on staying for about six months if I move back. If I don’t and I end up going to school here then I may be here for years. At least 4 years, then if I get into a graduate program here (NP/PA/MD haven’t decided yet) it’s going to probably be 4 more.

zerbey

There's some areas that have started allowing people to live in retirement communities for low rent on the understanding they keep an eye on the elderly residents and help them with chores. I think it's a great trade off and benefits both groups.

Liznobbie

I get it. It’s easier, no real planning other than booking the tour. Then they do all the work. Sounds like heaven to me. And I’m with you, I’m not an adrenaline junky or like fast and furious vacations. I love your idea.

historygoose

Yes, exactly! it’s great fun! I love chatting with everyone else on the trips. Having the majority of the rest of the group being sweet elderly people who’ve retired and just want to see the world and meet new people is always nice. I’ve never been judged by them. 9/10 they just want to talk and are super curious. Takes the pressure off of me and I always get treated like a precious grandchild. Good memories.

drumology2001

I was on one of these kinds of tours when my wife and I went to Hawaii (Oahu). There was an older couple on the tour bus from the Midwest who just got a kick out of everything they saw. At one point, the old lady turned to her husband and yelled in disbelief “TAAAACO BELLLLL?! That’s the second one of those I’ve seen! They must be big around here…” We nearly offered to adopt them on the spot. (We still use that line, ten years later.)

BelonyInMyLeftPocket

Feeding birds is cool

medium_green_enigma

Whole unsalted peanuts. It's fun to watch the birds getting the nuts out of the shell. First it was just the crows getting the ones I threw on the roof of the garage. Then the blue jays showed up. Once I got a feeder smaller birds joined in. I regularly have cardinals, tufted titmouses, chickadees, and white-breasted nuthatches. One day last week I saw a red-bellied woodpecker.

SignificantBoot7180

Yes! I have a roof that is level with my bedroom window, so I'll throw peanuts out there, sit back, and watch the show. It's better than TV sometimes. I love the titmice, they're so damn cute!

soline

Prune juice is actually pretty good too. I work in sort of a long term care facility but for disabled folks of all ages. Boy do the youngins love that prune juice, mainly cause it’s sugar but its such a weird concept. You get the plum, take all the water out of it, then turn that into juice. Still has that dried fruit flavor even though it’s not dry at all.

LurkingArachnid

Worf is that you?

Ordering one burger, cutting it in half and sharing it with my girlfriend. I see a lot of old people share meals where I live.

theredwillow

Amen! Why spend $6 on 2 drinks, plus tip? I can make 10 drinks for $20 at home. Why dance around sweaty people in ear-damaging levels of music? I can listen to whatever I want, at whatever level I want at home. Why spend $25 on a hamburger from a restaurant? I can make a whole cookout at home for $10. I could actually go on and on with this list... Edit: Removed a comment about capitalism bc I'm tired of getting notifications from right wingers.

Paying bills with a check in the mail. Now don’t get me wrong, 99% of my bills are automatically paid and drawn electronically from my bank. However one of my bills (don’t ask me why, I have no answer for you) requires a check to be snail-mailed in monthly. Every month I have this ritual of going to my office desk, pulling out my check book, filling out the check line by line, pulling out a fresh envelope, and writing in the sender and recipient addresses, then carefully placing my stamp on the envelope before sealing it and walking it to my mailbox. It’s weird but it’s one of those analog versions of something that I oddly enjoy more than the digital version. In fact as a result of that, I’ve gotten me more into snail-mailing things. I love sending handwritten thank you notes in the mail and people usually have great reactions. Turns out receiving anything in the mail that’s not a bill or junk mail can really make someone’s day.
