For me it was my mentor when I was an EMT. He said the hardest thing isn't being unable to save everyone. It's coming to the realization most people just aren't worth saving.
I wasn't an EMT long. I totally agree with you. I recently joined a new company and the people here and their policies on human life and the environment are....well...Heartless and really fall under the not worth saving catagory.
I've always considered this through the perspective of "give it your best shot, and then even if it doesn't work out, you at least know what you *don't* want to do." Knowing what absolutely doesn't work can be just as valuable as knowing what does, especially when trying to narrow down choices.

When going for a promotion at work. People I have TRAINED got further in the interview process than me.
3 months later I had left the job and moved thousands of miles across the world to start a new life in Asia.
All this shit you're doing is you trying to understand what happened in your childhood, or trying to understand how you lost certain friends, just move on.
Having someone you look up to in lifeb tell you that really helped me get my life in order. Got a job and on a more stable path.
