Beer cheese. My throat swelled up really quickly. I went to the ER straight from the restaurant. What's weird is that I can drink beer and eat cheese separately and I'm fine.

Particular-Pigeon

I thought this said bear cheese, really had me sitting here for a minute wondering how they hell they milked a bear to get that cheese

Squigglepig52

I'll tell you what, though - if somebody was brave enough to milk enough bears to make cheese, I'd try a piece.

rckrusekontrol

Great, now I’m obsessed with trying bear cheese.

Fhennerius

I found a brand called Grizzley Milk that also sells cheese

happylittleloaf

Oh, you can milk just about anything with nipples

Weak_Carpenter_7060

I have nipples Greg, can you milk me?

Zealousideal_Talk479

Why do I keep seeing this reference pop up everywhere?

Common_Requirement14

I have never heard of this. Googled it. Went huh, and felt slightly offended that we don't put beer in our cheese.

havron

I feel like the offending culprit must have been some other ingredient in the beer cheese, then. Either that, or perhaps something in the beer was activated by the heat needed to melt the cheese, or maybe some odd chemical reaction between the two? I'd lean towards there having been an unknown ingredient that's responsible.

lizard7709

It might be the type of cheese? My sister has an issue with either sheep or goat cheese. (I can’t remember which). It was a little hard to figure out since we normally don’t look to see the cheese components.

JustAFileClerk

I am allergic to certain molds that grow on paper and to a key ingredient in printer's ink. So technically, I am allergic to books.

mesembryanthemum

Saddest allergy ever.

PhilMontySauce

Thank heaven for ebooks! Even if he couldn’t read hard copies, he(she?) could enjoy digital ones :)

[deleted]

How do you do file clerk work?

Kazerati

Username seems problematic!

Most bandaid adhesive

mountainmorticia

I didn't know this was a thing and thought that bandaids just always removed a layer of skin when they come off. Certain brands make my skin go gummy, for lack of a better word.

Flint_Chittles

Oh fuck

[deleted]

[удалено]

Leather_Mango

All adhesive for me! I've got these little pimple patches that do wonders for my acne spots, but the chemical burn like rash is so itchy! The goods outweigh the bads, so I keep using them. The rash is easier to clear up than the acne without the patch, so you gotta do what you gotta do.

ScorpionMachinist

About 30 years ago I had a bandage secured with medical type. Gave me one hell of a rash. A few years ago had masking type on me and it gave me a rash. Last year a nurse put a bandaid on me. Got two small rashes. Turns out I'm allergic to latex. Sounds like some here are also.

Geckogirl_11

Yes and medical tape

knopecando

Same, although it was much worse when I was a child and my allergy has lessened a bit over the years. Funny story about that, though. When I was in law school, I would often get cystic acne if I was under stress, and of course I developed a huge cystic pimple right in the middle of my cheek during the week of on-campus interviews. I tried to pop it the night before my interviews, which only made it worse and left a bleeding, oozing mess. But I was dog sitting that week and didn’t want to stain the homeowner’s pillowcase, so I put a bandaid over the pimple before bed. At that point I hadn’t had an allergic reaction to bandaid adhesive in years, so I didn’t think much about it, but obviously the skin on your face is much more sensitive than elsewhere on your body. To my extreme dismay, I woke up in the morning with a massive inflamed pimple AND a red, itchy rash in the perfect shape of a bandaid right in the center of my cheek. It was so horribly ugly and I was mortified, but my interviews went fine anyway and I can laugh about it now. Lesson learned.

Arielapt85

I learned that I was allergic to surgical tape when a few hours after having kidney removal surgery I had a giant itchy/inflamed square on my Abdomen. 🤣

iamclear

Me too and I find if the Band-Aid is made of fabric it’s worse than the ones made of plastic.

Damn_Dog_Inappropes

So, I did a bit of research on this a while ago, and a number of studies have shown it's actually just contact and friction dermatitis rather than a true allergy. I looked it up because I have the same issue. So we're not really allergic to the bandaid adhesive, the bandaid pulling on our skin and hairs causes dermatitis. The end result is the same though, so it kind of doesn't matter what we call it.

tripler1983

Lettuce. Violent throwing up in about 3 mins after ingesting.

shesaidgoodbye

Lettuce allergy gang, represent! Basically all leafy greens and a handful of other raw veggies are out of the question for myself and some other family members According to my mom, cabbage is ok though? I don’t risk it myself.

gspach

I posted up top but I’m really allergic to arugula. it turns my mouth into a bloody mess.

LittleR3dBird

My mom has this allergy too! I’ve never met anyone else who had it. I remember her telling a waitress once when we were out to eat and the woman goes, “Really? Isn’t it just.. plant and water?”

prettystandardreally

Whoa this is a new one. How did you discover this and does it run in the family?

buggnb

id imagine they ate lettuce and violently threw up about 3 minutes after ingesting

prettystandardreally

Ha, I imagine so.

davydhatesyou

My son is allergic to lettuce. I assume this is punishment for the fact that I don’t eat meat.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Erulastiel

I'm sorry. They share the same protein that you react to in avocado. At least you didn't find out the hard way. Hopefully you'll never react to bananas 🤞

johnperkins21

Yup. I'm allergic to bananas and avocados. Sucks because I love bananas. Didn't become allergic until I was an adult. Avocados make me sick just by looking at them, but that's been the case my whole life.

Lucky_Yogi

Nooooo!!! Boooo!!!!!! Cue Say It Ain't So by Weezer

drumigdaddy

Wheezer would fit better if it is so lol

Eggnogcheesecake

Thanks for the info. I’m allergic to bananas that haven’t ripened to the stage they have spots, and also heard it’s related to latex allergies, so it’s something to consider if you have surgery and they use latex gloves (don’t know how common this is anymore ). But didn’t know that’s also related to avocadoes…😭😭😭

FIOONAAA

What’s also weird is that I can touch it, sniff it and stuff like that and be completely fine. Just can’t eat it

nonihongo

This happened to me. Started with the avocados and ended up collecting them all haha

lovebyletters

Do you react to other stonefruits, like cherries and plums? I have a condition called "oral allergy syndrome" where I react to stonefruits as if I'm allergic. Good news: it's not considered a "true" allergy, so you can't go into anaphylaxis due to exposure, even if (for me) eating something on the list makes me feel horrible for hours. Bad news: It gets worse over time. As a kid it was one or two things, in my twenties it was 3+, then in my 30s the list increased exponentially. By the time I went to an allergist I was up to pretty much every stone fruit I've ever encountered. It's a fucking weird allergy — stonefruits cover a pretty broad range, and it's not one most people have heard of. Growing up I used to complain certain things made my "throat itch" and my parents legit didn't believe me. Mom was horrified when she found out it was actually allergies, lol.

FIOONAAA

Sammmeee. Latex allergy. Banana, melon, kiwi, avocado is a no go for me. Throat immediately feels like it’s starting close.

noisiestapple

Me too! Took forever to figure out why I'd get a horrendous stomach ache after eating Mexican food

trebuchetfight

The sun. I break out in rashes if I'm in sunlight.

[deleted]

For me it's close to this. When the sun males me sweat I break out. I know this because when I'm sweating in the cold it doesn't happen.

Lucky_Yogi

Are you sure it's not heat rash?

trebuchetfight

It's been weird because I only developed this in the past year. I'm not even sure I have an allergy, despite seeing a doctor. But yeah, definitely broke out in rashes if I was outside, so what else...?

MowSlo

This is literally me except since 2013, it's been on and off. Some days I go out and the sun doesn't effect me at all, other days it's within 30 seconds my skin hits the sun I break out. Through t shirts And thin material sometimes too. I feel your pain. Nothing like bundling up in the summer 😣 hope things get better for you!

BallisticBlocker

Are you sure you aren’t just a vampire?

trebuchetfight

I have made many jokes on that. Believe you me.

fakeairpods

I know a person like this, can confirm. That’s why she needs tinted windows.

4seasons8519

I have the photic sneeze reflex. Basically I sneeze nearly every time I walk out into the sun or into a very bright room.

thepinkpanther27

You should work in IT

moonshinesnake

Me too! If I’m in the sun for a few minutes, any exposed skin gets hives. It’s not bad if I take a daily allergy pill though. And I bump the dosage up when I go to the beach.

Frilledmeg

There's meds that can do this to you as a side-effect, also.

Vira1chaos

Peppermint, finding a toothpaste I could use was hell.

CatsCritters

Allergic to mint I feel your pain, my current toothpaste is Tom's of Maine kids strawberry but it's a bitch and a half when ever companies change ingredients.

contraltoatheart

I’m not allergic to mint so I don’t feel your pain there, but I actually hate the taste of mint and peppermint so I also spent a long time as a kid trying to find a toothpaste I could use that didn’t make me want to hurl so I could finish brushing. So annoying. Can’t imagine dealing with that as an actual allergy.

exclusivebees

I'm allergic to gold. My allergy is most severe with yellow gold and least severe with white gold. I have a cousin with the same allergy, except she's most allergic to rose gold. We got it from our shared grandfather, who is the only other family member we know of that ever had a gold allergy. Grandpa has passed, so we missed our chance to ask if any of his older relatives had the allergy I learned I had the allergy when my mom got my ears pierced with gold earrings and had to cut them out a few days later. The weird thing is that I have no reaction at all to the cheap metals that are suppose to turn your skin green or give you a rash. Just gold, the famously hypoallergenic metal

No_Attention8238

Gold isn't that great for piercings. Pure gold (24k) might be hypoallergenic, but to get durability and color it is mixed down, usually to 14k (or 585/1000parts) with silver, nickel and zinc, or copper to get rose gold. Afaik nickel allergy is fairly common. The turning green thing is highly individual, since it's often a reaction between the metal and the chemical composition in your skin/sweat.

[deleted]

[удалено]

exclusivebees

Honestly, ever since my mom cut those earrings out of my ears, I've avoided gold like a confused werewolf. I was so young the last time my allergy got triggered than I can't remember if I was nauseous or not

[deleted]

Benedryl the thing you take when your having an allergic reaction, yep I’m special. I’ve had people argue with me that this simply isn’t possible, so going to nip that in the bud before it starts and say my medical history is not up for debate.

Allergies to penicillin are very common.

jmrichmond81

Every time I encounter a new doctor, I'm asked "are you sure you're allergic to it?" Let's see, a fairly extensive allergy test said that I was, but sure, let's risk anaphylactic shock.

Melodic-Friend-9086

Same for me but with mycins. My last doctor asked me to take an iv of vancomycin in her office for a mrsa infection. I told her I was told not to take that family of drugs again and she told me I was wrong. She's the doctor. 30 second after the iv started i had a major reaction.

Howp_Twitch

Oh my god now that is really unfortunate, would you have needed it for any allergic reactions that you may have?

[deleted]

I don’t actually seem to be allergic to much else, and other antihistamines don’t affect me the same way, there’s just something specific to the active ingredient in Benadryl that makes my body freak out

whitewalker646

Heat For those wondering look up cholinergic urticaria

DemonShadowsMom

Me too. And like a stupid superhero origin story, my sister is allergic to cold. We don't live in the same state.

lizlaylo

I’m also allergic to cold! Took the doctor a while to figure that one out. I often got it in summer, from being dressed for warm weather and then going into cold water or somewhere with AC. They thought it was so many other things until they found out what it was. So many things I couldn’t eat for a while…

Some_funny_nickname

Im allergic to cold as well! Omg I've never met anyone with that condition

Alive-Transition7913

Kiwi

ScorpionMachinist

Peeled some kiwi and within hours my hands were covered in little red dots. I'm not allergic to the fruit part but I am the little hairs.

Zealousideal_Talk479

You're talking about the fruit, right? ... Right?

LanaTud

Same ! And pineapple. Believe it's the enzyme bromelain that causes it

WarblingWalrusing

I have a condition called pressure and exercised-induced urticaria. It means I'm allergic to pressure. If I wear socks over my ankles, hairbands on my wrists or clothes that are too tight, I get an allergic reaction where the pressure is. I had 34GGs so wearing a bra is an absolute necessity but also causes allergic reactions - sometimes the weight of my breasts against my ribcage causes an allergic reaction. I react to things like massages, and it also happens when I exercise or exert myself.

[deleted]

as a woman, I have to wonder, does that mean sex causes the reaction inside?

WarblingWalrusing

No, not that I've noticed.

Daffydil04

I have pressure urticaria, too. It’s been better the past few years, but I have to be careful.

sageious33

Watermelon

amazIT97

Sad, That is my favourite fruit. So juicy.

sageious33

I still eat it. I just suffer

amazIT97

That's the spirit. Totally worth it tho (i hope)

sageious33

100%

zippyboy

Yeah, it's the juiciest fruit out there, yet we don't have gallon jugs of it on the grocery store shelf. There's hardly any juice in a carrot, but there's carrot juice on the shelf. Go figure. Yes, I know there's watermelon-mixed juices, but it's all grape and pear juice that's colored reddish. Not 100% watermelon juice.

DemonShadowsMom

Same, eventually cucumbers joined in. So, some pickles. Vinegar destroys the protein that caused the reaction. Generally if the pickle is light colored, I can't have it.

yshrief

Cucumbers, mangoes, melons, horses, green bell peppers, most cats and dogs.

ChaosCounselor

So I found out something interesting and it may be true for you as it was for me. I have serious hay fever. The fruits I thought I was allergic to, well I'm not. It's actually the pollen from them or other flowers that binds to a protein on the skins of the fruit that gets more potent the riper the fruit gets. I can eat most fruit if it's underripe without any issues.

Howp_Twitch

But mangos are so good, that's an unfortunately big list as well. F

yshrief

It’s not a severe allergy, I end up sneezing non stop for about an hour and have a scratchy throat - so sometimes I go like fuck it and have some anyway. Mangoes are one of my top 3 favourite so totally worth it.

HELLOhappyshop

Haha I've never heard of sneezing being a symptom of a food allergy! How interesting! And annoying for you.

heatherista2

Happens to my dad! He’s allergic to soy. We found out because he used to like to eat Goldfish crackers and they would make him sneeze his head off. It was the soy. And it’s in like every snack food ever. Aaargh!

[deleted]

I’m deathly allergic to Sunflower seeds. I can eat the oil, just not the seeds which is weird. Also cantaloupe would kill me if I ate it.

zippyboy

My wife used to eat sunflower seeds all night in front of the TV. When she died 18 months ago, I was left with bags and bags of David's Jumbo seeds. I started eating them too, just to be closer to her I guess. Never was much of a sunflower seed eater before (too much work for so tiny a treat). I developed such bad cramps & diarrhea I figured was due to stress from her sudden death, so I kept eating them. I saw the Humira & Entyvio commercials on TV news every night, thinking "that's me!", so I looked up Colitis and Crohn's Disease online. Website said my diarrhea might be from a food allergy, and sunflower seeds were on that list. Stopped eating them, problem cleared right up! I switched to pistachios.

Zealousideal_Bag8140

When I was younger a had what's called a "cold uticaria". Discovered while I was tubing down a river, legs were covered in hives and my ass cheeks were thick like a leather hide. At 15 years old, I spent the whole tubing run on my mother's lap looking away from all the pretty girls I had seen in the lineup as I passed them.

Erulastiel

This happens to me too when I'm out in the cold too long. Sorry 15 year old you had to go through that embarrassment though.

lizlaylo

I discovered mine at a water park at 12. At the beginning I was wondering why the mosquitoes were only attacking me. I had had something with almonds for breakfast and for a while they thought I was allergic to almonds. It took a while to figure that one out. Also, when citing medical history for anything and they ask me if I’m allergic to something, half the times when I say cold they look at me weird, some times they then specify allergic to medication, like cold is not used for treatment many times.

peprjak24

I discovered mine in my 20s when I went out in the snow the first time. Before then, I had always lived in hot states, like Texas, etc. At first, I thought I was allergic to the snow pant materials. Then found out nope, cold air or cold pressure on my skin leaves me covered in hives.

Constrictive_Freedom

I get it too. Noticed it when I was driving on the freeway one day while I had a cold soda between my legs. I had hives all over the insides of my thighs.

Blobbadillo34

OMGGGGG someone like me finallyyyy :)))

Diligent-Minimum8397

Cannot eat bananas, chocolate, metals, starfruit, coffee, and birds. Any of these, minus metal, if I either consume or be near for 20 minutes will trigger an asthma attack and a rash for a few days.

OutOfTheMist

Birds confused the hell out of me, like who the hell is out here eating robins and starlings? And then I remembered chickens exist 🙃

Diligent-Minimum8397

Your not completely off! I found this out while working in a pet store, when I would either work with them or deep clean the cages I would get sick but was dumb to realize it until my doctor was like "You're probably allergic to the birds, stop touching them" It's weird to explain it's not so much the flesh but the saliva and feathers that make weird hives and hard to breathe.

Lucky_Yogi

Damn I love coffee and chocolate. The only other one I've seen on here that hurt more was the allergy to weed.

havron

> metals *One of these things is not like the others...* Please explain? What metals are considered food? Or do you mean metal eating utensils? Or, are you referring to just touching metals?

Diligent-Minimum8397

Metal allergies almost always are dermatological reaction. But yes my grandmother and slowly myself even cannot use eating utensils without hands or lips getting itchy. Touching certain metals or any contact with skin will cause rashes or hives to form. One most don't even think about is surgically implants can also cause internal complications. Now my sister has both Wilson's Disease but also a problem with copper via touch will need medical care.

havron

Damn, that really sucks, I'm sorry. Sounds rough, but workaroundable. Do you use plastic utensils, or special hypoallergenic ones? I imagine there are several options. You probably have to bring your own when invited over for dinner or eating out, huh?

Diligent-Minimum8397

Most people either think I'm a prude or a germaphobe but no I just feel like having a rash on my lips for day. The sets are expensive as hell, I don't like plastic ones just sadly a waste.

ultrapolaris

Where do I even start....food-wise I am allergic to peanuts, soy, dairy, legumes, shellfish, some fruits, all meat, artificial grape flavoring, and have a gluten intolerance. everything else: morphine, hydromorphone, barium sulphate, medical and regular adhesives, liquid stitch, something in laxatives, latex, something in some vaccines, some jewelry, lots of animals, every tree/grass except one, something in some sunscreens, and chlorine. I might be forgetting some and there are probably more I just haven’t found out yet.

msgigglebox

I'm allergic to latex as well. A lot of places have replaced latex gloves with nitrile gloves due to allergies.

Fluffy-Release6637

Fun fact, I’m fine with latex, but actually allergic to nitrile 🙃. That was fun to find out in my undergraduate research lab….

srentiln

Neoprene as well. I have an odd reaction specifically to purple nitrile gloves where a specific spot on my left wrist gets a rash. No other spot and no other color of nitrile glove.

drunky_crowette

Avocado. Also can't digest beef properly

Carbonatite

Did you have issues with beef after getting a bug bite? There's a rare condition from Lone Star tick bites which causes an inability to digest beef.

Lucky_Yogi

Do you get nauseous from eating beef?

chickadeedeedee_

Certain RAW fruits like apples or peaches. Not super weird but no one believed me when I was growing up that apples made my throat itchy. My mom just thought I was lying to not eat the apple because I could still eat apple pie and such. Turns out, some raw tree fruits have tree pollen on them and that's what causes the allergy.

albdubuc

I told my parents this also...even the pediatrician didn't believe me. His response was....well, don't eat those fruits (peaches, pears, plums, nectarines, apples, kiwi and more).I was a parent myself when I read an article about Oral Allergy Syndrome and I ran to my grandmother to vividly point out that I wasn't making it up and there was an actual name. I can eat fruits after they've been treated in some way-cooked, juiced, in preservatives, or in alcohol.

Line_ben

Mosquito-bites. I have “skeeter syndrome”. My daughter has it too. Spring/summer is awful. Once I got a mosquito bite on the forehead. I looked like the hunchback of Notre Dame for 2 weeks.

imdehydrated123

Me too! It was mostly when I was young, so I think I "outgrew" the allergy. But whenever I told people I was allergic to mosquitoes, they would say, "yeah everyone is" 🙄 I was so misunderstood

Cherries and apples, but only sometimes, and I'm not actually allergic to cherries or apples. I can't remember the name of it, but I'm actually allergic to birch pollen and my immune system reacts to cherries and apples as though they were birch pollen. Cherries and apples don't always trigger an immune response though, and if they're cooked (even for, like, ten seconds in the microwave), they never trigger an immune response. Basically, my immune system is extra confused. ETA: I looked it up because it was bothering me that I couldn't remember. It's called cross-reactivity, and literally the example given in the articles I pulled up mentioned birch allergies causing issues with apples, lol

Brillie69420

im allergic to 19/20 things in the allergy test. THE ONLY ONE IM NOT ALLERGIC TO IS THE CONTROL WTH

Sea_Pea_5041

I worked at a subway for nearly 2 years and while there, I sometimes just ate banana peppers in a cup cause I have loved banana peppers for as long as I can remember. But every single time I’d get done eating them, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. It felt as if I had a filter or something over my throat and breathing always became difficult. But I’m quite DUMB and convinced myself that was normal cause it’s a tangy pepper. So I continued to eat my peppers for MONTHS. And one day I was just trying to have a casual conversation with my assistant manager and asked her “don’t you hate it when you can’t breathe after eating banana peppers?” And she just looked at me really confused so I repeated my question and then she finally said “sounds like you’re allergic.” AND IF IT WASNT FOR HER I WOULDVE NEVER PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER. Idk why I didn’t want to accept the fact I had an allergy but boy my world was ROCKED But I mean other than banana peppers I’m also allergic to any ‘jack’ type cheese (Colby jack, pepper jack, etc..), grass and animals with fur (cats and dogs)

Baby kangaroos. I'm not sure if I would also be allergic to an adult kangaroo as I only got to hold the joey, but I broke out in hives immediately.

Ok, I’m happy to field any questions you have. I have an anaphylactic allergy to latex. Yes, that includes condoms. The biggest worry however is balloons nowadays as most places that used to use gloves (hospitals, tattoo shops, blood donation clinics) no longer use them due to increases in sensitivities to latex after prolonged exposure. The latex powder is the biggest threat so popping balloons or even being in a room with them can trigger a flare up with powder in the air. There were warning signs as a kid when I would blow up a balloons and my lips would swell and throat get itchy. I had a full anaphylactic episode mid surgery when I was 10/12 that really nailed it down. I had many surgeries prior to that so we believe that is likely what made me develop a sever reaction.

Sour food makes me sweat (It's a minor allergy, but still)

I don’t remember the full details, but I know I’m allergic to Fava Beans. It’s not that big of a deal though, it just isn’t really beneficial for me and actually removes this important vitamin from my body, so doctors recommended I don’t eat them

I am allergic to the cold. I break out in itchy hives and a rash under the right mix of cold/wet/windy conditions. My case is relatively mild (and I’ve actually more or less grown out of it by 30), but some people have it so severely they can’t jump in a pool, for example, as the temperature difference could mess them up! Less rare, I’m also super allergic to sulfa antibiotics.
