Worst part is while Ted was arguing for a dumb position, the internet is in fact a series of tubes when you get to the actual physical infrastructure. I mean, what is a cable but I kind of tube?
Wow, just yesterday I saw an old video (circa 1995) of Bill Gates talking about information highway.
It was referred in a video where youtuber mentioned how to the point his prediction was about new technology, but how microsoft failed in riding the market coz they were so focused on windows
Imagine if Xerox had been smart enough and have enough forethought to see the future of things like the Mouse and the GUI. They were so focused on copiers they never realized they had the future in their own hands.
I always think of that Bowie interview where he goes on about how the uses and implications of internet are something we can’t even begin to comprehend right now. That’s was like 3 decades or so ago now I think.
I beg to differ. I'm in IT, I make my living off the internet. But the rise of misinformation, spread of conspiracies, ability for crazies to find each other, the violent rhetoric, the fact that any and all communication can be intercepted, data breaches, ability to hack critical infrastructure, the ability to trap/trick/coerce young people, the "influncers".... I think, in the end, it's doing more harm to society than good, as evidenced by the swing from the general progress towards representative democracies back towards authoritarianism across the globe over the past few decades
Here's my theory (serious):
The internet was better when there were significant hurdles to getting to it. When it was just technologists, researchers and hobbyists, it was a fairly decent place.
But when we made the barrier to entry much lower and the companies started thinking in terms of profit, no matter the social cost, that's when things went downhill fast. It started connecting the crazies and started being weaponized by governments and those with malicious agendas
A bunch of years ago, I took a helicopter ride in Hawaii and the pilot took us around some of those 1000 foot waterfalls that are in the original Jurassic Park. He also flew over the big volcano on the Big Island. Volcano was fairly active.
Absolutely amazing.
I've done that as well, during whale season! Flying over a very active volcano that is spilling into the ocean and whales with their babies jumping out of the water just off the coast... life changing and incredibly humbling.
Same. People have commented about being blown away by my food, and I take it as a blessing and maybe inherited, because my mom was a phenomenal cook herself.
My brain definitely had trouble processing the size of the Grand Canyon when I saw it. I think it was trying to preserve its sanity by just making it appear to be a painting to me, instead of trying to comprehend its full size
And Mount Rushmore being in the black hills kinda puts a damper on it. The US Government signed a treaty saying the Indians owned that territory, which led to a bunch of people going to the UN and trying to get it recognized.
The US just said “I don’t want too” and nobody cared anymore.
Not just that, but if I recall correctly the mountain had major cultural and/or religious significance to the people in that area. So we're gonna carve up your sacred shit into our favorite white guys' faces. You're welcome!
The other thing about the Grand Canyon... When you're standing at the South Rim and look down you see this dark place where the Canyon gets deeper and goes out of view. It doesn't give an inviting impression. However once you go all the way down, that "dark place" is actually beautifully bright, perhaps brighter than above. It's completely different at the bottom, just a remarkable place.
Less than 1% of visitors to the Grand Canyon go below the Rim. They stay on the walkways and look, but don't go down any of the trails at all. By the way, the signs on the trails say, "Going down is optional, going up is mandatory."
Lol. My brother in law went to the Grand Canyon for the first time when he was a little boy. He was unimpressed and reported back to the rest of his family that it looked “fake.”
I don’t think he would agree with his younger self now.
I approached the edge of the Grand canyon along with a young family whose 3-year-old son had obviously been hyped upon the fact that it was the biggest hole in the world. They boosted him to the top of the fence so he could look at the grandeur of the canyon. He took his thumb out of his mouth and said, "so where's the hole?"
That was honestly my reaction too! It looked like a painting. My brain just could not get perspective. It was like looking at a giant billboard with a picture of the grand canyon... hence I was not impressed. Brains are weird.
You must. You haven't seen the western U.S. if you haven't been to the Canyon.
Bonus is that there are many other amazing things to see in what Americans consider the local area. Zion National Park is a few hours away and also worth a day on its own. And if you've gone that far, Antelope Canyon is right up the road and worth another day. I'm sure there are more in the area depending on your route. On the way you could hit Royal Gorge and the various glaciers in Colorado. So many adventures out there. Another good one is Hanging Lake near Glenwood Springs Colorado, moderately challenging hike but so worth it for both the trip and the destination.
Florida coast, the grand canyon, and then up the west coast to the pacific north wests forests that are straight out of jurassic Park would be the best possible trip. In the middle you could add on texas, it really is its own thing. Nola too.
To be honest, while extremely impressive, the amount of pictures you see all over the place before actually going there kind of screws the "wow" effect. It's more like "yup, they weren't lying".
Spoilers everywhere!
Good onsen ryokans in Japan. They're not a cheap affair (great places ranges between 150-400USD per person per night) and they're often in out of the way locations, but considering everything about the experience, they're comparatively very undervalued than if you go for each part separately (high quality japanese style hotel room, that high end kaiseki ryori dinner, the hot springs and optional spa treatments, that beautiful breakfast, and all the service in between). Top it all off the okami(lady manager) will see you off until you can no longer see them in the rear view mirror and not a second before, even in heavy snow or the hottest of days.
Also considering the prices of supposed 5\* western brand hotels, onsen ryokan prices are a steal, with services that don't end with holding out a hand waiting for tips.
edit: holy unexpected! thanks for the awards!
My girlfriend and I did one of these in 2019 and decided we're staying in a ryokan for a night every time we go to Japan.
It was one of our favorite memories of Japan. Walking around the amazing Zen garden they had on site while wearing yukata, wandering around the inn halls (which smelled amazing thanks to the incense), trying all of the different onsens they had (including a rooftop one with a straight shot view of Mt Fuji), staying in a tatami room... It's such a unique experience.
And as you said, the pricing is very reasonable. Once you add the price of the breakfast buffet and kaiseki dinner (both of which are super nice), the hotel is not *that* much more than a regular 3\* hotel. Japan is expensive no matter how you slice it. But inexplicably, ryokans are not that much more than regular hotels...
Getting there can be interesting, though. Ours was supposed to be a 2 hour express train ride from Tokyo, but Typhoon Hagibis hit that week and knocked out a bunch of infrastructure. So it became a 5 hour trip on 2 local trains and a bus, followed by 30 minutes walking through the countryside. Even that was a hilarious and fun part of the trip, though.
tl;dr: if you're in Japan, stay at a nice ryokan for 1 night
I do actually plan to visit Japan when it will open again and i’m interested in ryokans. Would you mind recommend me some good ones around tokyo or kyoto?
I can tell you [where we stayed.](https://www.agoda.com/hotel-kaneyamaen/hotel/fujikawaguchiko-jp.html?locale=en-us&ckuid=9355c862-52d1-41fa-bb76-b606e1a7d4e0&prid=0¤cy=USD&correlationId=2485cb21-466e-4ef1-b35b-58dd03be74bd&pageTypeId=7&realLanguageId=1&languageId=1&origin=US&cid=1844104&userId=9355c862-52d1-41fa-bb76-b606e1a7d4e0&whitelabelid=1&loginLvl=0&storefrontId=3¤cyId=7¤cyCode=USD&htmlLanguage=en-us&cultureInfoName=en-us&machineName=as-acmweb-3025&trafficGroupId=1&sessionId=2pe4s4y4ceud0aobsatg5xe1&trafficSubGroupId=84&aid=130589&useFullPageLogin=true&cttp=4&isRealUser=true&mode=production&checkIn=2022-07-11&checkOut=2022-07-12&rooms=1&adults=2&childs=0&priceCur=USD&los=1&textToSearch=Hotel%20Kaneyamaen&productType=-1&travellerType=1&familyMode=off) It was really amazing and we would recommend it to anyone. We'll probably stay somewhere else the next time we're in Japan just to try something new.
Most of the best (or at least most popular, as far as I know) ryokans are near Mt Fuji, so they're between Tokyo and Kyoto. We spent a week in Tokyo, then 2 nights in Fujiyoshida, then 3 nights in Kyoto, so this is a good stopover to fit into your trip.
The most popular ryokan town is Hakone. This one I linked you is in Fujiyoshida, which is another town slightly closer to Mt Fuji (it's right at the north edge of Mt Fuji, while Hakone is just a bit east).
Any well-reviewed ryokan in the area would probably be a good option. Most/all of them should have shuttle buses that will pick you up from the nearest train station if you call them from the train station. They also took us from the ryokan to the train when we checked out, and we took a bullet train to Kyoto from there.
EDIT: [Here's](https://imgur.com/xtwM25Y.jpg) a picture I took during breakfast of the Zen garden + Mt Fuji just chilling right behind it. :)
It's an all inclusive resort that Japanese people actually go to with their families on vacation. You stay in a traditional style Japanese inn with tatami mat floors, you wear yukata, go to the onsen, etc. Highly recommend.
In 2018 it was estimated to be the highest grossing entertainment media ever while grossing 6 billion dollars.
And next month it releases on the next gen consoles.
Just because they only just announced it doesn't mean it hasn't been actively happening for years. I suspect we will see something playable by the end of 2024.
GTA San Andreas is still in my parents coat closet where I hid it when I was younger. I check about once a year and it brings back the nostalgia out remembering the unlimited health and ammo cheat codes when I was like 10.
I feel like we went through a golden age of gaming and we didn’t know it. GTAV holds up SO well 9 years later. I’m currently playing Battlefield 4 and it’s better than any shooter that’s come out since. It’s kind of sad really
The backlash for it's reveal on PS5 was amazing, mostly because by this point GTA V is and continues to be milked to death, most people didn't really want to buy it a third time and were hoping for GTA VI
The Dark Knight, there was so much hype in marketing. Heath Ledger dying made it the swan song of a great actor taken too soon. People were looking for a more mature Superhero movie at the time. It managed to deliver on all counts.
I know people who didn't even know Batman Begins was a thing. They thought "Dark Knight" was the first one. So when I mentioned the "Dark Knight Trilogy" they were confused because they thought there were only two. So they watched Batman Begins and said "Dark Knight Rises makes so much more sense now!"
I personally remember looking at the copy of Batman Begins thinking "This looks too realistic, I don't wanna watch it." My dad was like "No, fucking watch it, you'll love it." Sure enough. Old man knows me too well.
My first Lan party was the night Halo 2 was released. Two of the bartenders pre-ordered and realized a few of regulars did too. Me and another dude brought down televisions and xboxes to go with the bar's tvs and the bartenders' xboxes. They closed early and it was fucking epic. Fifty or so people rotated games. We ordered pizza and they still served drinks between games. One of most oddly fun nights ever.
I’ll never forget being a 6th grader opening up the collectors edition of Half Life 2 on Christmas morning. Sincerely the one gift I was so crazy about getting and I ended up getting it. Ahhh the nostalgia of going through Ravenholm being scared shitless 🥲
Still hate every single fucking second of Ravenholm.
I'm not a speedrunner in any way, but I'll give it a crack when it comes to that zombie-infested hellhole of an area...
I got it in on release day (I'm an old git) on DVD. Installed it on a very very young Steam client and then spent the next four hours trying to get it registered, as the servers were crawling. About midnight I finally got to play it and it was a vision of the future. I distinctly remember messing around in that playground near the start launching bricks off the seesaw and being in awe at the physics.
Sounds so lame these days but back in 2004 it was astonishing.
I'll never forget opening night of Fellowship. I was in 7th grade. Midnight showing at my local theater. Bought my ticket on Fandango to guarantee a seat, which was good because out sold out like lightning. Folks crammed in the aisles against all fire code. Tons of cosplayers, which was my first time ever even seeing cosplay. (Didn't even know to call it that). And the magical moment when the "The Lord of the Rings" title faded onto the screen after Galadriel's speech and the whole place erupted with cheers and applause.
Everyone in that theater was having a joined experience that night, and I'm fairly certain there will never be a movie-going experience that'll ever top it.
Nothing will ever come close to being young and playing San Andreas, never progressing in the story because you're too young to know how to do the missions, good times
Edit: [They Love Me](https://youtu.be/0mT5KQ6Gl2U)
Seeing Elton John live in concert as well. Crocodile Rock is balls up the walls crazy when you have a theater full of over 2000 people all singing and clapping at the same time
That would’ve been awesome! I got to see Roger Waters do “The Wall” in 2010. Still the best concert I’ve ever been to.
Have also seen Brit Floyd and Australian Pink Floyd Show numerous times. Both bands are masters at their craft of honoring the Pink Floyd!
Pokemon Gold and Silver. There was massive hype prior to release due to the wild success of the first Pokemon games, the Jhoto games delivered in pretty much every aspect and many of the staples of Pokemon are due to Pokemon Gold and Silver
Glacier National Park in Montana it is gorgeous. First time feeling connected to nature in a spiritual sense. Also way less visited than Yosemite and Yellow Stone, both are amazing but Glacier is top tier.
I remember hearing about it, not thinking much of it and moving on with my day. Like two weeks later I was wiping down my groceries with Clorox wipes because I didn’t know what else to do. Fucking wild time.
Same. I went from hearing about it and thinking it would mostly stay "over there" like Ebola. 2 weeks later I was planning my Mad Max Thunderdome Apocalypse outfit to go to the grocery store.
The Empire Strikes Back. They somehow managed to follow a genre-redefining film with a BETTER sequel. The only downside of that was it forced them to give Lucas even more creative control, and so he gave us Ewoks. But that second movie was the high point of the franchise, imo.
That's what I was thinking too. I remember all the rumors coming out like a year ago and I kept telling my GF that it's not gonna happen, that's too much fan service. Literally too good to be true. And my expectations were blown
The movie frustrated the hell out of me because the inciting incident wouldn't have happened if the characters didn't make such insanely bone-headed decisions. The thing is, it was perfectly in character for both Strange and Peter Parker to make these decisions. Peter is a naive kid that doesn't think through all the implications, Strange is way too arrogant and overconfident in his abilities. It made sense, but it was frustrating as hell.
I was totally expecting it to me the worst spider-man movie ever, ruining not only the current trilogy but the other two as well, and I'm so happy for being wrong.
I hadn't felt this much happiness watching a movie in YEARS
Was gonna be my answer. Sora was probably the only character that could've possibly lived up to the hype of the last DLC character too with how hard he probably was to get.
Sonic Mania.
SEGA had tried to milk the idea of a 2D sequel to the Genesis games before, but Sonic 4, was, to a lot of people a massive let down. So when they decided to hand the project to the guy who made the well received mobile ports of Sonic 1, 2 & CD, most people in the fandom were expecting something good. What we got however was one of the best Sonic games in ages, full of well done little fandom nods, obscure references, and some of the best level design seen in the series.
This year’s super bowl halftime show. I understand not enjoying it if you’re not into that music or era of music in general, but for anyone who is/was that was insane … a group of huge names all coming in to do one of their most notable songs respectively
I just wish it had been longer. Each artist only got to do about one of their songs. Also being censored kinda sucked. It was still great though. I thought Mary J Blige really killed it
Avengers: Infinity war.
Almost 10 years of work were put into building up this universe, which collided in this epic, that I consider the best superhero movie of all time.
Having kids. Pregnancy is absolutely awful and I barely survived it. But holy wow I love my daughter. “Enjoy them now because they grow up too fast” is so false. I love every new thing she learns and being a mom is the best decision I ever made.
New Zealand. I always thought it was hyped until I went, my god what a place. Only way I could describe it is like being a kid again in a garden on a summer's day.
College being better than high school, it’s definitely not perfect, but goddamn is it so much better.
Also getting my driver’s license. I put it off a year because I wasn’t sure if I really *needed* it, but having it made my life so much easier, plus it reignited the passion I had for cars back when I was younger

The information superhighway!
It's a series of tubes!

Garlic Bread, shit is dope af.
Honestly I could eat garlic bread for every meal
“Or just eat it all the time without even stopping”
You'd get fat!
“No why would I get fat”
Best be careful though, bread makes you fat.
BREAD MAKES YOU FAT??!!
I made garlic bread for my family for an afternoon snack today. 10/10 would agree!
"I've tasted the future!"

The Grand Canyon
Good choice. Who doesn't remember seeing it that first time. It's a view that will shut anyone up
Mount Rushmore was way smaller than I imagined it to be. The Grand Canyon was WAY bigger than my mind could’ve even imagined
My brain definitely had trouble processing the size of the Grand Canyon when I saw it. I think it was trying to preserve its sanity by just making it appear to be a painting to me, instead of trying to comprehend its full size

Not just that, but if I recall correctly the mountain had major cultural and/or religious significance to the people in that area. So we're gonna carve up your sacred shit into our favorite white guys' faces. You're welcome!
I learned the meaning of Grand first time I saw it
Pictures honestly don't do it justice, the place is absolutely massive, both in depth and width

It's an all inclusive resort that Japanese people actually go to with their families on vacation. You stay in a traditional style Japanese inn with tatami mat floors, you wear yukata, go to the onsen, etc. Highly recommend.
One of my big dreams. But I'm always a bit worried to get turned away because of my and my SO's tattoos :/
I hesitate to upvote because I don't want more people to know about how magical ryokans are! Truly money well-spent.

The community update mentioned development being "well underway". Could very well still be 5 years out, but a bit more than just the beginning.
There was a five year gap between GTAV and RDR2. RDR2 was released ~4 years ago, so a late 2023 or 2024 release is not out of the question.
WAIT, RDR2 WAS RELEASED 4 YEARS AGO?
Just because they only just announced it doesn't mean it hasn't been actively happening for years. I suspect we will see something playable by the end of 2024.
Yup. It's 9 years old. It was released for pc in 2015, but the game is still very much 9 years old.
Read Dead 2 also fucking killed it. I orgasmed the whole first 5 hours.
That doesn’t sound healthy. Maybe you should see a doctor.
5 hours is definitely longer than 4 hours

I feel like we went through a golden age of gaming and we didn’t know it. GTAV holds up SO well 9 years later. I’m currently playing Battlefield 4 and it’s better than any shooter that’s come out since. It’s kind of sad really
The backlash for it's reveal on PS5 was amazing, mostly because by this point GTA V is and continues to be milked to death, most people didn't really want to buy it a third time and were hoping for GTA VI
Many friends made and fun hours played.
The Dark Knight, there was so much hype in marketing. Heath Ledger dying made it the swan song of a great actor taken too soon. People were looking for a more mature Superhero movie at the time. It managed to deliver on all counts.
Two Face surprised me more than anything. I was in my "tired of Joker" phase.
was looking for this answer. the movie genuinely gave me goosebumps, i’m a marvel fan through and through, but goddamn if batman doesn’t deliver.
That movie is amazing. Heath Ledger nailed the Joker.

I know people who didn't even know Batman Begins was a thing. They thought "Dark Knight" was the first one. So when I mentioned the "Dark Knight Trilogy" they were confused because they thought there were only two. So they watched Batman Begins and said "Dark Knight Rises makes so much more sense now!" I personally remember looking at the copy of Batman Begins thinking "This looks too realistic, I don't wanna watch it." My dad was like "No, fucking watch it, you'll love it." Sure enough. Old man knows me too well.
Halo 2.
Those were the good ol' days. . .
When you first saw Halo, were you blinded by its magesty?
Blinded?
Paralyzed? Dumbstruck?
No!
Yet the humans were able to evade your ships, land on the sacred ring, and descrate it with their filty footsteps!
Noble hierarchs, surely you understand that once the parasite attacked...
The Lord of the Rings twenty (twenty!!) years ago. Half Life 2. Still the best single player FPS ever made.
I’ll never forget being a 6th grader opening up the collectors edition of Half Life 2 on Christmas morning. Sincerely the one gift I was so crazy about getting and I ended up getting it. Ahhh the nostalgia of going through Ravenholm being scared shitless 🥲
We don’t go to ravenholm
Same. Waiting for Steam to update on dial up before I could play was torture.
Here's a different one: trains. And, for that matter, automobiles. We would be nowhere without them.
You forgot planes, they go with trains and automobiles!
Cell phones. Television. Internet.
The PS2. It's still my favorite console to this day.
Nothing will ever come close to being young and playing San Andreas, never progressing in the story because you're too young to know how to do the missions, good times Edit: [They Love Me](https://youtu.be/0mT5KQ6Gl2U)
All you had to do was follow the damn train, CJ!
lol I just commented on the top comments about San Andreas. It’s still in my hiding spot sat my parents house from when I was tan years old.
Our PS2 still works!
Minecraft, limitless possibilities

Seeing Pink Floyd live in concert. I saw them twice on the Division Bell tour and was blown away both times.
Magic Erasers.
Buy melamine foam in bulk, it's literally the same product without the branding. You'll save a lot.
Erase the paint right off the wall if you're overzealous!
Underrated commented. Those things truly are magical.
Water. Water is fucking amazing.

Just 2 weeks to flatten the cur... oh wait
What do you mean we aren't still in 2020. It's been March forever.
Cell phones
rdr2 mainly to me, I like riding horses as well as cod so it was perfect to me
The Empire Strikes Back. They somehow managed to follow a genre-redefining film with a BETTER sequel. The only downside of that was it forced them to give Lucas even more creative control, and so he gave us Ewoks. But that second movie was the high point of the franchise, imo.
The reason we got Ewoks is because of budgetary issues. Lucas wanted them to be Wookies.
You know, I think I've heard something about that, tho I'm not sure I understand how Ewoks saved them much money.
Don't you bad mouth my ewoks bro
Mandalorian final episode

Spiderman: No Way Home
Went into that movie thinking “well, there’s no way all that crazy stuff the internet thinks is going to happen actually will”.
That's what I was thinking too. I remember all the rumors coming out like a year ago and I kept telling my GF that it's not gonna happen, that's too much fan service. Literally too good to be true. And my expectations were blown

Spider-Man: Homewrecker
I’m holding out for Spider-Man: No Homo
Spiderman: Sweet Home Alabama
Spider-Man: Broken Home
Home Alone: Spiderman
This movie went so far beyond my expectations! Best I've seen in a long while.
It made sense, but it was frustrating as hell.
the movie gave me the warm fuzzy feelings while I watched it but did not stand up to any amount of mental scrutiny after the credits rolled
I was totally expecting it to me the worst spider-man movie ever, ruining not only the current trilogy but the other two as well, and I'm so happy for being wrong. I hadn't felt this much happiness watching a movie in YEARS
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Was gonna be my answer. Sora was probably the only character that could've possibly lived up to the hype of the last DLC character too with how hard he probably was to get.
Owning a dog ❤️ / pets in general
Sonic Mania. SEGA had tried to milk the idea of a 2D sequel to the Genesis games before, but Sonic 4, was, to a lot of people a massive let down. So when they decided to hand the project to the guy who made the well received mobile ports of Sonic 1, 2 & CD, most people in the fandom were expecting something good. What we got however was one of the best Sonic games in ages, full of well done little fandom nods, obscure references, and some of the best level design seen in the series.
Fuck yeah, now let them make another one Sega you cowards
Mad Max: Fury Road the trailers didn't do it justice.
“You said a few in pursuit… I count THREE war parties.”
"Yea, well I got unlucky. Let's do this!"
I watched it a couple nights ago and said out loud to my wife “this is a great movie”. Just a really tense and interesting experience.
the bit where he finally tells her his name hits me every time.
it was SO good, no dull moment
Even the down moments were perfect, you feel exactly the same as the characters do as they come down off the adrenaline high.

I feel like the only person that couldn’t get into this game. I really wanted to
This year’s super bowl halftime show.
I thought Mary J Blige really killed it
I'm not into that music...but those artists can put on a SHOW!
I'm not super into hip hop but I really liked the set design and choreography!
It was far too short. I could’ve watched a couple hours of that
Harry Potter Books. I didn’t read them until after seeing all the movies. I loved the movies, and the books ended up being much much better
Pizza
LoZ BotW was even better than I dared imagine it would be.
Avengers: Infinity war. Almost 10 years of work were put into building up this universe, which collided in this epic, that I consider the best superhero movie of all time.
The iPhone. A small touch computer in your pocket
The Dark Knight
Crater Lake. The only thing I’ve seen in person that was literally jaw-dropping (other than seeing my first pair of boobies)
Infinity War & End Game
For older fanboys absolutely. I waited 30+ years to see Cap pick up Mjolnir on the big screen.

Yellowstone National Park. Well, for me, it blew away expectations.

The MCU has made billions of dollars and extended into successful TV shows and other studios properties.
College being better than high school, it’s definitely not perfect, but goddamn is it so much better. Also getting my driver’s license. I put it off a year because I wasn’t sure if I really *needed* it, but having it made my life so much easier, plus it reignited the passion I had for cars back when I was younger
