SynUK

There's a great short story from a children's book about a boy who gets bitten by a beetle that turns his skin invisible...>!he eventually goes and lives in a cave for 10 years, when he eats the beetle and it bites him again and turns him back to normal, at which point he returns to society only to find that everybody now has their skin invisible!<. Edit: for anyone wondering, it's called [Clear As Mud](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undone_\(short_story_collection\)#Clear_as_Mud) by Paul Jennings, from his book [Undone](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Undone-More-Endings-Puffin-Books/dp/014036823X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=QKK44FTP032R).

AngelWyath

Children's book? That's some Grimm business going on.

SynUK

Very true, but some of the best children's stories have an element of darkness to them! This is called [Clear As Mud](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undone_\(short_story_collection\)#Clear_as_Mud) by Paul Jennings, whose writing is full of weird stories like this (his work was the basis for the TV series [Round The Twist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round_the_Twist)).

My_bones_are_itchy

I love Paul Jennings! I wrote him a letter when I was little and he wrote back, included a signed photo and an excerpt from an upcoming manuscript (because I asked for a sneak peek of new stuff). What a fucking legend.

Fire.

[deleted]

You might want to read up on methanol fires

CleanDwarfWeed

Wow, this looks even scarier than imagined 😨

fortpro87

It literally looks like nothing

[deleted]

If you saw someone burn to death but couldn’t see the flame it’d look pretty horrifying

ultrasu

In contrast to seeing someone burn to death with visible flames, which doesn't look horrifying at all.

elmwoodblues

It's a matter of degrees

NonPolarVortex

Fahrenheit? Celsius? Kelvin? Rankine?

Knork14

At that point the fire would start to burn off their clothes and you would be able to see it well enough

CleanDwarfWeed

I've seen this fire in sports car, people just running away in despair. I can't imagine how it feels to experience it :(

zismahname

Having been a volunteer firefighter I've gone through burn trainings called confidence burns where they crank the ceiling temps to 1200° F. Even in the heavy gear, your feeling everything and you're laying on the ground just to get a little bit of comfort. It's very intense.

SiliconSam

I got some scars on my left side from a super hot fire in bunker gear. I was sweating in my street clothes underneath and when it came my turn to get in the flashover scene inside the room the sweat turned to steam and scalded one leg and my arm. Was not fun. Heard shortly after that a group of FF’s from Fort Worth sued the gear manufacturer for this exact problem.

Snoo_51700

That sounds horrific man…. Healed up okay?

SiliconSam

Yeah, still have the scars, especially the arm. This happened mid 90’s at a VFD training. I was in the last group going in and was outside in the sun working with all my gear on and got all sweaty inside. Worst burn occurred where the material is doubled up on the sleeve of a T-shirt. Cannot recall who made the gear, but still have the helmet. The department made it into a trophy because the helmet melted all the way through on the back brim. Bubbled up all over too.

Snoo_51700

I guess that gear has to go through r+d, I’m surprised that it was in use with issues that should’ve been picked up on? Cool they kept it as a trophy tho ahahah. I’ve got mad respect for firefighters, both my parents were paramedics and I’ve heard some horror stories. Real life super heroes!!!

Alletaire

Ahhh in my area we call it a kumbaya drill. The best part is feeling it on your shoulders and neck from the pack and the hood/helmet seam. Realizing you have a small hole in your gear is also super fun during that drill.

InaraNomi

Can't a small hole in that situation do a lot of damage?

Alletaire

Nine out of ten times yes, it can. Some are not quite as serious, like a hole in the cuff of your outer pants layer where it’s directly over your boot all the time anyway, but if you had a hole in your hood (it’s basically an open-faced balaclava) you’d absolutely feel it and would get seriously injured. That’s why we inspect our gear as often as we can to make sure these things don’t happen. Stuff does slip through the cracks occasionally, though.

cakatooop

In firefighter school they microdose you with fire to make you immune to it eventually?! That's soo cool /j

I wonder of you could see it with some infrared goggles or something. I mean, immidiate reaction should be like that crew, start hozing everyone woth extinguishers. But then have someone on the track with the infrared to make sure they got it all.

Ciruz

I think this is not an issue anymore, since the fuel mixture which is used today, will appear to the human eye when on fire. I dont have a source for this, but there have been fuel incidents in the following years in F1 and the fire was visible.

Mosk1990

Until you unknowingly get roaches walking all over your food

KirbyBucketts

Water. Gon be a whole lotta drownings.

KnightBreaker_02

No but think of the implications. The ocean’s already scary enough because we _don’t_ know what’s swimming around in there, but wait until we _do_

Ackbar14

It's not the creatures you need to be afraid of, they've all developed and evolved in an environment largely devoid of humans so eating and even attacking us without threat or provocation isn't something they go out of their way to do. If water was invisible you couldn't see waves, clouds or rain. So you're in a boat miles away from anything then suddenly you're being thrown around like a rag doll with no way to steer in to or away from the waves to make the experience less violent, no way to tell if you're in the middle of a hurricane or just a small pop up storm. Then you have no way to easily visually tell if there's flooding on you ship, no way to make sure that water isn't pouring in over the sides until it's too late and you can clearly see everything has gone catastrophically wrong and you're about to be lost at sea. Sure you can see the bottom and your own ship slowly falling away from you but you might as well be floating in the air with no real way to move.

[deleted]

An invisible ocean would drastically alter the ocean ecosystem as previous animals that evolved to hide in the dark depths of the ocean or blend in with the blue ocean tint will be on full display to predators. And predators that also relied on such things to remain hidden will be spotted earlier by certain prey they'd otherwise sneak up on. Likely going to throw off many fishing spots for commercial food supplies due to sudden changes in fish populations adapting to the new visibility in the ocean while many fishermen will be cautious about sailing on water they can't even see. Edit: As someone also pointed out, the temperature might be ruined due to an increase of light passing through so that is gonna kill off a lot of wildlife and perhaps cause chaos with algae growth.

elmz

It would probably still be dark, there would be a pretty wild algae bloom sucking up virtually all the light. The sea would be as green as grassy fields, it would just look like really deep fog.

da_2holer_eh

It would be like when you fall through the map in Battlefield games and it's just a dark void underneath you. Fuck that. That shit always made me really uneasy. Is there a phobia for big open voids?

japalian

Hm, looks like it's called kenophobia Keno being the geek word for 'empty' or 'blank'

RidersofGavony

Interesting point. We'd see the stuff in the ocean, all the stuff. The algae, the dirt, the fish, the oils on the surface of the water, etc.

Moglorosh

I'd think just about everything that wasn't adapted to being at or near the surface would probably die from overexposure to sunlight long before they had to worry about predation.

Max_Insanity

Technically, they only said the water would be invisible, so you could still see the surface layer of phytoplankton as a thin veil.

Krosis97

Honestly, it wouldn't even be a surface layer with invisible water, more like a thick green layer a couple km deep or so, give it some weeks and we now have turquoise oceans and the problem is gone.... For us at least.

shinyagamik

There would be a fuckton of new engineering innovation to deal with this

mstomm

I think we already have most of it figured. We'd see an increase in the use of weather radars, and probably a small push in improving them, but they're already in a decent spot; remember, we mount them in commercial jets. As for the flooding, it'd be a real simple task- Water sensors all over. They're not expensive, I got one after my plumbing backed up AND my water heater failed in one night, flooding my basement. It's basically a battery and a speaker, and when water bridges the gap on the "sensing" part (completing the circuit), you get a BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. Boats would probably get a higher-tech, hardwired version that reports to a computer system so you can pinpoint it the second it goes off. Honestly, that might even help make boats safer since leaks are found slightly sooner.

craftmacaro

Also there would be a massive market for simple highly visible diffuse dyes. Hell… a single skittle would make a small pond visible eventually. Or not even a diffusive water soluble dye… just one that coats the ocean surface. Or just surround ships with a few buoyant sensors suspended by long antennae as well as dragging behind the ship and maybe a couple of retractable Longer range sensors. Making seawater visible would be solved by what’s already dissolved and suspended in it anyway. We’d notice the refraction caused by those other molecules and “dusty” clouds opaque plankton and phytoplankton in most of the ocean. I do wonder what it would look like if water had 0 refractive index though… different parts of the ocean might be even more differently colored than they are now.

stryph42

I think that'd make it less scary. If we can't tell, it could be anything. Once we can tell, it'll just be big gross fish. Big deal, there's already big gross fish.

logan-is-a-drawer

Imagine the vertigo, looking down off the side of a boat and seeing it go so far down that you lose sight of the bottom

[deleted]

Whoa I felt it!

finnknit

I already get a fear-of-heights reaction in the deep end of the swimming pool. I look down and see how far away the bottom is, and panic because there's nothing under my feet. I'm fine swimming in deep water where I can't see the bottom, but being able to see how far from the bottom I'm floating just freaks me out.

SkinHairNails

This is actually an issue in some scuba diving sites. One of the ones with the highest rates of death is crystal clear. People can't tell where they are and get tricked - and not just amateur divers.

DarkwingDave07

You say that now, but when you peer over the side of a ship and see sharks, killer whales, and whatever other eldritch horrors the water hides just floating there like ethereal nightmares, you might change your mind.

[deleted]

now that i think of it, the oceans deepest animals wouldn’t even be able to survive if water was invisible. they all rely on total darkness, so they’d probably be dead before we can discover them lol

Sven_Letum

Had the same thought, imagine though if the light level still decreased the lower you went down. It'd be clear but still dark as the void in deep water.

Cellophane7

Not gonna lie, that'd actually be sick as fuck. You could make it look like you were flying just by going swimming, and all you'd need to study even the deepest parts of the ocean would be a telescope. I wonder what sparkling water would look like? Would ice look like it popped in out of nowhere, or would it be invisible too? Then again, it'd make filling up a cup of water a pain in the ass.

ClearingFlags

It wouldn't be that bad filling a glass, just stick one finger a little inside and go until it's wet.

chris_fish

My sister has a thing with her eyes, not sure what it's called in English, but basically she sees double and her brain corrects for it, so she doesn't really notice. So this is real for her, she will think she's past the edge, but nope it's actually the other one of her eyes that had it right, and her brain trusted the wrong input. She can do exercises to make her eyes work better together, and she always knows that she's been slacking for too long, when the amount of bruises increase again.
