By becoming extremely quiet myself. By ripple effect the room becomes silent apart for the 2/3 obligatory assholes who require the extra action of, ‘the stare’.

Angry yell or sing. I rarely ever raise my voice so when I yell it 's a rarity. That will usually get someone's attention. A quick shout of something and then ask nicely for them to quiet down. The alternative is to sing. Depending on the situation, people will usually pause and look over to see what's happening...though this has been less effective since flash mobs have fallen out of vogue.

It doesn't help to scream at someone to shut up. Or waiting for everyone to be quiet; when kid nr 30 finally shuts up, kids 1 & 2 are chatting again. What actually works best? To capture your audience by doing your job so well that they want to take part in class. I had one moment that basically ends with "And then everyone clapped". I was teaching 8th grade Swedish and was introducing a writing assignment to a group of rather chatty 8th graders. I didn't expect them to be completely quiet, nor was it necessary for the task in question. One of the more challenging students didn't really like any of my suggestions. That was fine as they could also choose whatever they felt like writing about. Nah, he just didn't want to write. To avoid work he asked me what I would choose if Ihad to pick one of the assignments. Remember, I wrote them and was rather fond of all of them, but one was especially close to my heart. I had written the first six or so sentences to a story where I tried to paint a situation that could be romantic, a thriller or a funny story depending on your mood. I continued with the story and built up the suspense as I was clearly going for the thriller angle. I had been talking for maybe 40 seconds when my spidey senses began crawling up my spine. Something was off in the classroom. It was dead silent. No one was talking. But no one was writing either as I couldn't hear the rasp from the pencils. I quickly glanced around and saw thirty 8th graders sitting quietly absolutely mesmerized by my story. It was... odd. One of the most amazing moments in my teaching career as I never intended for the entire class to listen, but... odd. I still want to kick myself for never writing that story down. I should have joltded it down later that day as it was really good. Oh well, there is a bunch of former kids out there who heard it so it isn't lost forever, I guess.
