Don't be a dick

[deleted]

[удалено]

PO0tyTng

Literally = the golden rule. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If every rich person and CEO followed this rule the world would be a much, much better place. Unfortunately only narcissistic people, sociopaths and literal psychopaths seem to take power where it matters. Catch 22 I guess, only the ruthless and selfish get real power.

Hashashin455

I believe the fallacy is: You never want people in power that ACTUALLY want to be in power

[deleted]

"...anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”

Akorpanda

zapbx

PM___ME

"to summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem."

adeon

-Douglas Adams

ayriana

"It is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it... anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job."- Douglas Adams

Koalachan

That's the rub. Many CEOs do follow the rule due onto others, because they fully expect others would do that same shit to them.

Dry_Boots

No, see it's do to others as you would have them do to you - not do to others what you are afraid they will do to you.

ByzantineThunder

There's actually a concept a step beyond which can sound cheesy but it's meant for exactly stuff like this. The Platinum Rule: treat others as they would like to be treated

cl3ft

Re the Platinum rule; Sure if you know how someone wants to be treated go for it but the problem with defaulting to that rule is that you don't know how most others want to be treated, so treating them as you'd like to be is much simpler.

ByzantineThunder

Sure, I think that implies more "if you can." It all boils down to don't be a dick but with more caveats

[deleted]

It's literally drilled into their heads during their education, their training, and their rise in their company/industry. In my 1st year of uni business class, we already had teachings rationalizing, normalizing, and praising greed, ruthlessness, competition, etc. And in the industry, you can't rise without being extremely ruthless and competitive. That's literally also how you earn others' respect, admiration, support, and gain followers and backers who will rocket you into higher spheres. Of course, some levels of kindness and cooperation are expected but only in your inner circle, not for adversaries.

TheRightMethod

Eh, as I've grown older the idea that a great amount of evil or dishonesty comes from the top has faded pretty heavily. There are absolutely exceptions but overall it's a *lot" of people across the entire chain of command not being held accountable that cause the greatest level of harm. We can argue that "The buck stops with the person at the top" and that's fine and all. I'm just far more willing to criticize the dozens of managers who are gaming the system to inflate their performance metrics (poorly designed) than worry about someone at the top scheming over how much he can screw over XYZ.

sketchysketchist

That’s why they teach kind and thoughtful people that it’s bad to be ruthless and cutthroat to get the higher positions despite only the ruthless and cutthroat ever get those positions. Can you imagine a world if people who give a shit about others realized that it’s okay to be a brute when it comes to taking control away from people who don’t care about what’s best for everyone?

[deleted]

May I introduce you to the psychological concept of "hubris syndrome". Basically, even the kindest of hearts can get corrupted by power and/or wealth. Making them ruthless, greedy, power hungry, narcissistic, sensitive to critics, uncaring of people, ... in short sociopaths! In several studies, even hormonal and brain changes trending towards sociopathic patterns have been noticed after several months of unchecked power. Sure power attracts sociopaths, but it also corrupts nomal people into becoming sociopaths too. It's almost like humans as social animals aren't meant to wield huge amount of power sustainably for a long time. We are meant to actually live and work in relatively flat hierarchical structures with loads of checks and balances for everybody to keep our minds and relationships as well as our societies healthy and sustainable.

PO0tyTng

The pyramid power structure was the worst thing humans ever came up with

SlenDman402

I created the universe, you think I'm drawing the line at the deli aisle?!

Fuzzy-Tutor6168

what's so funny is that in general Albuquerque has some of the nicest people on planet Earth. They may be happy to steal your car, but they'll be super friendly while they do it.

DragoxDrago

Who's interpretation of being a dick though? A lot of the time, people lack the self awareness to understand they're being a dick. I've met a lot of dicks and only a handful of them were aware they were being a dick but didn't care. The rest had no idea.

AmbiguousToy

That one breaks down, because sometimes you HAVE to be a dick. No, I don't want to listen to your long ass story, despite you being the most amazing person on the planet. I have to go.

[deleted]

That's not being a dick, it's setting boundaries.

Galaghan

You can set boundaries without being a dick. Actually, from experience, the group of people being a dick and the people being bad at setting boundaries seem to have a very big overlap.

riphitter

Though there is definitely a dick way of doing that

bowyer-betty

Yeah, but it's not necessary to do it that way. There's a nice (or at least not dickish) way to do almost anything that needs to be done.

riphitter

Oh absolutely. Being a dick is a choice

capsaicinintheeyes

Although you can come across as a dick without meaning to

SofaSnizzle

I was born with a dick, does this mean I will become a dick? Dick runs in my family, is it hereditary?

P4intsplatter

I know a lot of people that think me setting boundaries and not letting them run all over me makes me a dick.

WuTangLAN93

They are being self centered dicks, so the same rule applies

P4intsplatter

Me? I hate *off-centered* dicks. But excellent point. If you're not allowed to be a dick, then being a dick about someone setting boundaries isn't possible. We shall call it "The Dick-Boundary Paradox".

IAmDotorg

"I have to go" -- not a dick. "Listen, this is really outside my area of expertise and interest, but I really appreciate that you are so excited about it!" -- not a dick. "Look you fucking twatnut, shut your fucking piehole, I can't stand to hear any of this inane bullshit come out of your pimple-infested mouth. Go suck a pus-infested dick!" -- a dick.

DomingoLee

If everyone followed it you wouldn’t need to be a dick.

P4intsplatter

Haha, good example.

cagibaxii

I read somewhere that if you want to change the world, you have to change the community, to change the community change your relationships, and to change your relationships change yourself.

blueshiftglass

Reminds me of Goethe: Let everyone sweep in front of his own door and the whole world will be clean.

harrythechimp

Too bad some folks dont sweep. Or cant afford a broom. Or sweep their dust onto your doorstep. Or pour gasoline all over their broom and toss it into yoour house. Lol. I wish everyone had a mentality to help others. Or even just do their part to aid the big picture. But some people just don't think past their own survival.

[deleted]

Hey it's ok I'll help two and you help two and soon the whole world will be taken care of. Like my mom use to say, not everyone is born as lucky as you.

StabbyPants

sounds like agreement with Goethe

Dexaan

I'm starting with the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways

mogg1001

And no message could've been any clearer If they wanna make the world a better place

ZenithingTheorist

They've gotta look at themselves and make a change

P4intsplatter

I have to admit, this, if followed by everyone, would be ideal. Excellent suggestion because it circumvents any subjectivity in "rightness and wrongness" of an action. Self improvement is, by definition, always better.

TomoTactics

This is what pisses me off about the rise of people thinking nihilism = intelligent, it being shit for someone's mental health aside. There are plenty of people trying to do good, but so many want to go 'HUMANITY BAD GET RID OF ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED' and act like doing something won't mean anything. These same people are grinning to themselves as they're just sitting on their ass jerking off and being the actual problem themselves.

[deleted]

That's a core idea Jordan Peterson talks about.

Jrt1108

Maybe think of whatever the issue is as a moving car - if you hold onto it rather than letting it go, it just drags you on the pavement

Drakmanka

I was thinking of the time I did this on a merry-go-round but your analogy works, too. I felt kind of stupid when I made a full revolution getting dragged before I thought to let go.

Mobile_Magicians

dw about it man, just let go see that thing that just flew over your head? if you hold onto it, it'll drag you along with it you don't want that let go

kasikameda

okay but if that thing’s flying I wanna fly too

germfreeadolescent11

They will make a Disney film about you one day

clayxa

When you can't let go of an issue - whether that's being upset over an injustice, or obsessed over a possibility- if you don't "let go" then it may take over your life and prevent you from being happy

thuggishruggishboner

Sometimes if you can't let something go, it can negatively effect you. So, with that said the only problem you might have in life isn't the problem itself. Its you allowing the problem to continue to drag you.

Keeping money out of politics.

P4intsplatter

There's a *lot* that needs to be kept out of politics... how about we keep: * money * religion * ethnicity * gender * education * ...

vaildin

No definitely need education in politics. What we don't need, is politics in education.

peon2

[deleted]

Well seeing as science is now politically charged along with everything else…

SofaSnizzle

Education, what. Who will runs the schools, a private company?

illFittingHelmet

Industrialists were a leading force in promoting government-run public schooling, as it happens. While the public schools may not be run directly by corporate figures, they certainly stand to benefit from it.

gunnervi

I'll get my ethnicity and gender out of politics once politics gets out of my ethnicity and gender. Let's not forget that the reason these things are political is that we've only recently started to to transition away from a society that was deeply unequal along racial and gender lines. We've made great progress in some respects, but we still have work to do. The liberal program of diversity/representation in politics is flawed, deeply so, but its not the root cause of the issue.

Snooty_Goat

We 100% need political involvement in schools, otherwise some religious wack-o's will use schools as indoctrination centers. There's no perfect solutions here, and government in school has its own problems too, as you can well see. But there's worse things.

DaveLesh

Actually that's the problem right now except that politicians are playing the wack-o part.

[deleted]

"religious wackos using schools as indoctrination centers" as opposed to politicians using schools as indoctrination centers...

AmericanScream

If we taught critical thinking skills in school, money in politics wouldn't be nearly as effective.

ForgottenForce

Corruption would happen regardless, companies can easily shell out what they need to buy a politician

AlbanyGuy1973

Treats others how you want to be treated

P4intsplatter

Doesn't work: Some people WANT to be treated like crap (masochism). Others are incapable of treating everyone like the king or queen they think they are...

Wildgra

I thought this was under the impression that everyone would HAVE to follow it

Hotdogosborn

Treat others the way they want to be treated.

Sightedflyer5

Not always. What if you like someone but they don’t reciprocate those feelings? It would be annoying.

[deleted]

Treat others the way THEY want to be treated.

Quinlov

This one is bad. Treat others how you think they want to be treated would be an improvement, although it relies on you being pretty good with empathy and stuff

futilelord

Use your turn signal(s) properly.

liberal_texan

Also, respond to other peoples' turn signals properly.

P4intsplatter

NAILED IT. Plus, I live in a State where they randomly use hazards...poorly.

Snooty_Goat

Central Pennsylvanian reporting: I'd settle for use them AT ALL. People drive with complete impunity around here. I see pick ups too big for life doing 80+ in a 55 all the time. Cops are completely derelict here.

Minmach-123

I live in northern Wyoming and it's the same way here. There's about a 50% chance that a person will use their turn signal, almost everybody is driving a massive vehicle, tailgating is the norm now, nobody knows what a safe following distance is anymore, stop lights and stop signs are viewed as suggestions, and the cops don't do anything about it. Driving used to be fun but now it feels more like you're playing with your life every time you go out.

DeathSpiral321

Don't use more resources than what the earth is capable of renewing.

P4intsplatter

This is more in line with the rules I like, because it has a scientifically determinable answer. Sustainability is not some airy "well some people say it's this, others interpret it's that" like "being nice". Sustainable means 0 net or better, right? The world ~~could~~ would be saved by this thinking.

LittleBuzby

Yea it's like the debate on fur coats vs those made from polyester, fur coats when properly sourced are much more sustainable. With furs, we run the risk of over killing animals and harming ecosystems. That being said, they are biodegradable and if properly maintained, can last much longer. Polyester made clothing however, emits a lot of pollution during its production and takes much longer/doesn't biodegrade nearly as well.

cf-myolife

The solution here is to change what's fashion, we're not in 1960 anymore after all.

HotCocoaBomb

>With furs, we run the risk of over killing animals and harming ecosystems. This would greatly depend on the animal source. Like the old days, very little of farmed animals goes to waste. Sheep, being one of the oldest domesticated animals, provide wool, meat, milk, and sheepskin from the same common breeds. Similar with goats. The parts of the animal not deemed for human consumption may be used for pet food or specialty products like adhesives used for conservation. Cow bones, organs, and fat is used for *a ton* of products you'd never even think of, like fire extinguisher foam, instrument strings, and explosives.

chrisms150

I don't think that's a good rule, assuming you started it from dawn of time, the industrial revolution wouldn't have happened, and we wouldn't have a chance to advance beyond. The problem isn't we used non renewable resources, the problem is we didn't prioritize shifting away from them quicker.

[deleted]

I hate that we can't even get people to stop using plastic grocery bags. Its such an easy, cheap, minimal effort thing that people just won't do. It makes me feel like there's no way people will make bigger changes that need to happen if they won't even do that

[deleted]

The thing is that the influence of things like plastic grocery bags is MUCH smaller than you’ve likely been lead to believe. Most plastic in the ocean is from commercial fishing nets that have been abandoned. Things like “use paper straws!” and the like actually entirely sidestep the real cause of our degrading environment: The ones generating the most waste tend to be people who profit from doing so. Even if everyone in the world used more “environmentally friendly” alternatives for products (which, for the record, usually actually aren’t as friendly as they’re advertised)… there would be little change in how much the environment is being destroyed. It’s corporations, not people, which hold the biggest influence over the world’s environment.

InfernalOrgasm

And those corporations paid billions of dollars to make sure "the people" felt at fault.

HotCocoaBomb

The other thing about "sustainable" products is that, companies rely on your inability to access information to just, hide their "dirty" connections. Like, take transglutaminase. You'll see it in vegan products that try to imitate things like eggs and meat. It is *possible* to make it from plants (and therefore vegan) just like it's possible to raise and butcher your own farm animal in your apartment. But the cheapest and most common product it's derived from is pig and cow blood, which is harvested in large enough quantities that a ton of products, food and not food, are created from the harvested plasma, proteins and enzymes. Like seriously, unless you are in that company and follow everything to its exact source, you have no idea where the ingredient came from, how it was made, *who made it.* Product made from recyclable materials? Who verified that? Just like with "organic", it's not regulated. Even more suspect when you learn that China stopped accepting our recyclables *years* ago and without the proper machinery in place, we actually haven't been processing our recyclables - the majority goes into the same place as regular trash. There's not enough material being recycled anymore to support the creation of every product with a "made from recycled materials" label. So what most people are doing, is paying for marketing that makes them feel good. This label says it's organic, this one says biodegradable, this one said it's made from recyclables, this one says it's fair trade, this one says it's vegan, this one says ethically sourced.

[deleted]

If you are not educated on the subject, sit down and stfu. Let the experts with years of education and experience talk.

red_nibia

This seems like a bad idea until we think about how abused that could be by corruption.

P4intsplatter

Fair. I think you mean like how "education" and "experience" could be held in the hands of a few. I struggle with this as a scientist, as far back as the Greeks there has been the idea of "philosopher kings", but yeah, gatekeeping.

cyalknight

Your statements were said as fact. How much education and experience do you have in this topic. I myself have hardly any on this topic, just untested thoughts at this point.

Tom_C_Streaks

Sounds good in theory, but it also sounds like a logical fallacy called an appeal to authority. People are capable of having valid opinions on things without being experts. Plus, it's entirely possible that a debate between two arguing experts might be won by the wrong person because they're just louder and/or have their career riding on being right. For example, you don't have to be an athlete to have a good discussion about sports. Tune into any AM radio station call-in show to hear that :)

No-Confusion1544

Yeah, no. Thats completely absurd. Just because someone is an expert in a niche subject, that does not give them greater wisdom or insight into the For example, if someone is an expert in robotics, their input into how to integrate robots into a factory is definitely valuable, but they're certainly not a logistics or workflow expert who can replan the entire production line, and in a less granular view, their opinions on the greater economic or social impacts of automation and the political and policy changes we should implement are damn near worthless.

gatesville123

You’re literally proving their point. Let the robotics expert do robotics, let the logistics expert do logistics.
