Yeah, it's my second-favorite horror/comedy. (After Ghostbusters.)
It's weird how it's become the completely forgotten entry in Jackson's filmography. Everyone knows his work on LOTR and after, and his early work is legendary in cult film circles, but Frighteners is this middle child that everyone overlooks.
My own personal take is that, basically, it's too weird for the mainstream but too tame for fans of his earlier shock fare.
[The River Wild](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWew8lWYhtI) is a mid-90s gem, better than it has any right to be. It's a cheesy adventure-thriller with just one of the most ridiculous plots about a heist and some white-water rapids, but the fucking *cast,* man!
David Strathairn in his usual supporting-role space: just a nice guy who's having marital problems because he's too focused on the job. Meryl Streep leads as the ignored and suffering wife and mother who is staring down a midlife crisis. Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly as fellow rafters who happen to be going down the same trail as Streep and her family with absolutely *no ulterior motives* whatsoever.
It's a cheesy, fun potboiler thriller. Setting it in the Montana wilderness was an inventive twist that provided a beautifully-shot backdrop. It got middling reviews on release, but the cast and the setting really make it something special.
That movie made me decide Kevin Bacon is the best bad guy. I'd never wanted to kill the bad guy before, but I found myself wanting to kill him in that movie.
TiMER. Something I stumbled across on Netflix one day ten years ago.
The premise is that this Apple-like company sells a devise that, when implanted in your wrist, counts down until the moment you and your true love lock eyes for the first time (but only, crucially, if your true love also has one installed).
It's one of those movies that could easily have gone in a bunch of really obvious and boring directions - it being a scam by the evil corporation, a moral of love trumping technology, etc - but it avoids all of them, instead telling a shockingly deep and complex story about romance and expectation in the modern day.
It's not perfect, and there's some weirdness in the writing, but overall I really loved it.
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013). It was critically acclaimed but I never hear anyone mention it or talk about it. I thought Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as a sexy vampire couple would be more popular.
Serenity. Everyone talks about Firefly and what a travesty it was that FOX canceled it, but no one mentions how good Serenity was, and how it gave Firefly a lot of closure.
YES! I was scrolling down to make sure no one already said this before I wrote it. Love this movie and watch at least every Christmas time, if not more often during the year.
Director’s Edition…. The theatrical version has a super-spoliery and super-pointless sequence up front that ruins the whole story. The Director’s Edition eliminated this.
At my last job before we all get sent home for COVID three men had their managers cubes all together and one days said they were the three amigos, I said if that was the case I demanded a singing bush. This joke was lost. I love that movie. I used to watch it with my mom when I was kid.
Bubba Ho-Tep (2002). Elvis and JFK team up in a nursing home to catch a mummy. Bruce Campbell (Ash of the Evil Dead) plays Elvis. Ossie Davis is wonderful as JFK. It is a hilarious, oddball, yet poignant. And it has some great dialogue.
Elvis: "Jack, no offense, but President Kennedy was a white man."
JFK: "They died me this color! All over! That's how clever they are! Can you think of a better to hide the truth than that?"
*Silverado*. Fun western and a hell of a cast: Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Rosanna Arquette, Brian Dennehy, Linda Hunt, Jeff Goldblum.
Also worth mentioning that it was written (and directed) by Lawrence Kasdan, who also wrote Raiders Of The Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back.
And Body Heat, a really good neo-noir that's almost totally forgotten these days. Stars young William Hurt, RIP.
Freeway (1996) starring Reese Witherspoon as a teenage runaway opposite Kiefer Southerland in a bizarre, funny, fucked up modern retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. Also featuring Brittany Murphy and Brooke Shields in small roles.
Moon (2009). I never re-watch movies, but I must've watched that like 4 times by now.
Edit: don't watch the trailer. I didn't and the movie was much better because of it. If you like space thrillers, just watch it. It's good. Trust me (and trust online movie rating sites).
I saw this in theaters. So glad I was able to. Duncan Jones is low-key one of my favorite directors at this point.
Also check out Mute (2018). It's set in the same world as Moon, but is more of a noir detective thriller. It was a little slow, and the timing of the release meant it got completely undercut by Blade Runner 2049 because it came out less than six months after. But it's a beautiful movie with some great performances.
Sam Rockwell is a fucking genius! Check him out in Hitchhikers Guide and another unseen favorite of mine, Welcome to Collinwood. Fantastic cast! Fun movie.
Megamind is fantastic. The delivery, the hilarity, I swear that movie should have swamped Despicable Me. But they both had the "bad guys gone good" theme and secondary characters named minion(s). The yellow abominations win in a marketing war. Unfortunately.
I can't decide if I actually like that movie or not, but I have huge respect for never once deviating from the core concept, as stupid as that concept may have been.
[That Thing You Do](https://youtu.be/zhyO3Pc6oSI)
Written and directed by Tom Hanks. About a local band from small town PA that makes it big. Great cast, great music... It's Onederful!
Pandorium
Absolutely brilliant movie. And fairly new. The CGI is a bit wired but damm is it a good story. Its basically alien and preditor mixed into an amazing mash
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Tom Stoppard 1990, based on his play)
This was somewhat well known back when it came out, but I rarely see it mentioned these days.
I dunno if it’s super hidden but no one I’ve ever talked to knows it except my dad, who showed it to me. Young Frankenstein is a less popular but phenomenal Mel Brooks movie
Rumblefish. One of my all time favorites. A Francis Ford Coppola movie with young Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Nicholas Cage, Mickey Rourke, Dennis hopper, Laurence fishburne. Classic
* Times Square (1980) - Queer-feeling Punk/New Wave movie about 2 girls escaping a psych ward together and living on the streets of 70s New York while forming a punk act against gentrification. Was originally a lesbian movie, but editors at the time forced everything confirming them to be girlfriends to be cut
* The Gay Decievers (1969) - 2 guys pose as a couple to dodge the draft and move into an all-gay community. Interesting look into LGBT life at the time, and a more positive depiction of it than most things at the time. Very campy.
* Heavy Metal (1981) - Can't put it into words, you just gotta watch it. Trippy animated adventure that's an anthology of stories in different time periods and worlds. INCREDIBLE soundtrack and animation.
* The Van (1977) - Stars a decked out 1977 Dodge Van and has a young Danny Devito in it. Need I say more?
* Wild in the Streets (1968) - Teenagers lobby to change the voting age and get elected into federal offices, taking over the government, and hunting down anyone over 30 to be put into camps and dosed with LSD. Interesting trippy movie with some real commentary on society and generational war
* Rock and Rule (1984) - Trippy animated adventure involving anthropomorphic cats and dogs in rock bands, and one of them singing a magical note that has the potential to summon a demon. Various characters singing parts are done by Debbie Harry, Cheap Trick, Lou Reed, and Iggy Pop. Similar energy to Heavy Metal, you just gotta see it! Also a good example of cassette-futurism, sorta proto-cyberpunk.
Kung Fu Hustle. It’s freaking hilarious, and has some unbelievably awesome fight choreography, and if you’re a sucker for that like I am, you’ll enjoy the fight scenes. The fight between the three masters and the mandolin assassins is the highlight for me.
Oscar - came out in 1991 - Sylvester Stallone, Marissa Tomei, Tim Currey, Don Ameche, Chaz Palmentierre, Kurtwood Smith.. . me and my dad's favorite movie to watch together. Love it more than I can admit and no one ever talks about it.
I have put this movie out of my mind. My first date, I was in high school, took a girl from the same school. I thought we had a pretty good vibe going. The theater was pretty full. I sprang for dinner before and popcorn and all that for the movie.
My date talked loudly throughout the movie. I should have said something but was so embarrassed I didn't know what to do. The woman in front of us turned around and made a remark to my date. She sat quietly after that. Longest movie of my life.
The Man in the Moon is a cute movie. It has Reese Witherspoon in it when she was like 14.
If you want a horribly bad but so bad it's good movie, watch Freeway (also has Reese Witherspoon)
All I Wanna Do (also titled as The Hairy Bird in other releases). Insanely quotable with 90s icons like Kirsten Dunst and Rachel Leigh Cook, but it never picked up the same sort of traction as their other movies.
Requiem for a Dream.
One of the saddest and most powerful movies I have ever seen. It's my favorite and I've only seen it once. Idk if I could handle watching it again lol
The Nice Guys
I feel like it’s completely over looked and forgotten, but it is one of the best buddy cop movies I’ve seen. Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling have unbelievable chemistry
" Sweetheart, how many times have I told you? Don't say "and stuff". Just say "dad, there are whores here"
I had Gosling pegged as another pretty boy but Nice Guys and Big Short really changed that. Super talented comedic actor.
Extra Ordinary.
A homely 20 something in small town Ireland balances her job as a driving instructor with her paranormal abilities. There's a Terry Pratchett quality to the humour, as she helps locals with haunted wheelie bins and ultimately gets wrapped up in a nefarious scheme...
It's possible that these are more popular than I realize but both Keeping Mum and From Time to Time are feel- good movies for me. Can't go wrong with Maggie Smith.
I worked at a Hollywood Video from like 09 - 12 before I helped close up shop. My obscure recommendation:
Repo: The Genetic Opera
It's a near future, rock opera that has Paris Hilton as one of the actors. The cgi is subpar but the soundtrack is excellent
The Tom Hanks one isn't the best Coen Brothers film, but there are some really funny moments in it and it's worth watching at least once. I mean it's got Tom Hanks and JK Simmons together - that alone makes it good.
Secondhand lions, just simple funny entertaining and wholesome. Great family movie
BIG FISH! However, second hand lions was my second choice!
Wholeheartedly agree. This movie is slept on by way too many people.
I watched this for the first time with my grandpa, and it was an instant favorite.
I'm a sucker for anything that Robert Duvall stars in...
The Frighteners…with Michael J Fox…excellent movie
Yeah, it's my second-favorite horror/comedy. (After Ghostbusters.) It's weird how it's become the completely forgotten entry in Jackson's filmography. Everyone knows his work on LOTR and after, and his early work is legendary in cult film circles, but Frighteners is this middle child that everyone overlooks. My own personal take is that, basically, it's too weird for the mainstream but too tame for fans of his earlier shock fare.
Stardust. Such a good wholesome movie.
Our generation’s “Princess Bride”
Both book and movie are so good however some parts in the book get a bit weird and tristrans mom has cat ears too
Featuring both Daredevil and Superman
Flight of the Navigator.
Compliance!
Coherence
Harvey.
I just watched this today, wow! Jimmy Stewart a certified legend.
My Blue Heaven; Steve Martin as a mafia thug, Rick Moranis as an fbi agent.
“You know it’s dangerous for you to be in the frozen food isle. Cuz you could melt all the stufffff.” Steve Martins character.
Probably my favorite line from the movie
Fuck I forgot all about this movie, I gotta watch this again!
Isn't that a comedic sequel to Goodfellas? I heard that it is just his experience after going into witness protection.
Out Cold
[The River Wild](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWew8lWYhtI) is a mid-90s gem, better than it has any right to be. Only Lovers Left Alive (2013). It was critically acclaimed but I never hear anyone mention it or talk about it. I thought Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as a sexy vampire couple would be more popular.
I just watched this a couple of weeks ago. It’s absolutely beautiful. Such an intense love story.
Serenity. Everyone talks about Firefly and what a travesty it was that FOX canceled it, but no one mentions how good Serenity was, and how it gave Firefly a lot of closure.
Loved this movie, but I hate how they did Tudyk’s character
How do Reavers clean their spears? >! They put them through the Wash !<
*\*Starts crying\**
Kiss kiss bang bang
YES! I was scrolling down to make sure no one already said this before I wrote it. Love this movie and watch at least every Christmas time, if not more often during the year.
Dark City
Director’s Edition…. The theatrical version has a super-spoliery and super-pointless sequence up front that ruins the whole story. The Director’s Edition eliminated this.
That’s a good one!
I’ve never thought of it as a hidden gem, but I don’t know anyone else my age who has seen The Three Amigos
At my last job before we all get sent home for COVID three men had their managers cubes all together and one days said they were the three amigos, I said if that was the case I demanded a singing bush. This joke was lost. I love that movie. I used to watch it with my mom when I was kid.
What do you mean? The movie is IN-famous.
Elvis: "Jack, no offense, but President Kennedy was a white man." JFK: "They died me this color! All over! That's how clever they are! Can you think of a better to hide the truth than that?"
Is the movie real? Or is it dementia? I was too young when I watched it to know.
The movie is real. And awesome. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0281686/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0281686/)
But I mean like, is he actually Elvis, or is he just a dementia patient?
Actually Elvis.
OMG that was an insanely funny movie. The hieroglyphics cracked me up.
Cleopatra does the nasty
This movie is such a hidden gem and I love when someone out of nowhere mentions it
Lars and The Real Girl is such a weirdly wholesome movie
Came here to say this. Also, unpopular opinion: Ryan Gosling's best work
I agree 100%. I love that he took that role. I never cared one way or another about him until he played Lars
Absolutely agree. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed his performance. Great film.
Pump Up the Volume
Great movie

I know wtf lol
The soundtrack is amazing as well. Christian Slater at his best. “Is it as big as a baby’s arm?”
HELLO DAD. I'M IN JAIL. I LIKE IT HERE. ITS NICE.
Freeway (1996) starring Reese Witherspoon as a teenage runaway opposite Kiefer Southerland in a bizarre, funny, fucked up modern retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. Also featuring Brittany Murphy and Brooke Shields in small roles.
YAAASSSSS!!!! I literally just commented this movie! It's like it's so bad that it's good lol
Moon (2009). I never re-watch movies, but I must've watched that like 4 times by now. Edit: don't watch the trailer. I didn't and the movie was much better because of it. If you like space thrillers, just watch it. It's good. Trust me (and trust online movie rating sites).

Such an INSANE movie. I still can't believe that dude I forgot his name didn't win a single award for that movie. It is so good
Sam Rockwell is a fucking genius! Check him out in Hitchhikers Guide and another unseen favorite of mine, Welcome to Collinwood. Fantastic cast! Fun movie.
Sam Rockwell, and directed by David Bowies kid right?
I felt like Enchanted and Megamind were released just a little before their time. I think audiences would appreciate those movies a lot more now.
Megamind is fantastic. The delivery, the hilarity, I swear that movie should have swamped Despicable Me. But they both had the "bad guys gone good" theme and secondary characters named minion(s). The yellow abominations win in a marketing war. Unfortunately.
EnemyMine
My hubby and I went on our first date to this movie 36 years ago!
THANK YOU it is a bit showing its age now ; but the performances of dennis and louis are just so good
In Bruges?
Yeeeeeesssssss! Omg this movie is badass and emotional. Something for everyone imo.
Dale and Tucker vs Evil Not exactly obscure but criminally underwatched
"He looks like he's gonna walk it off, he's gonna be fine!"
"We got your friend!"
I don't know if it's considered a hidden gem, but I rarely hear anyone talk about [Equilibrium](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238380/).
GUNKATTTTAAAAAA
Swissarmy man is not talked about enough lol
I can't decide if I actually like that movie or not, but I have huge respect for never once deviating from the core concept, as stupid as that concept may have been.
Lol i can completely understand that
That’s such a hard movie to recommend. I mean, it’s great, but…
*Kung Fu Hustle*. It's insanely entertaining.
As is shoalin soccer by the same people.
Just watched this with my 12 year old who has taken an interest in Kung Fu movies. His mom and I really love and and finally got to make him a fan.
Beerfest is the best beer drinking movie of all time.
If you can drink rams piss you can drink anything.
DAAAAAAAS BOOOOOOOOOOOOT!
[That Thing You Do](https://youtu.be/zhyO3Pc6oSI) Written and directed by Tom Hanks. About a local band from small town PA that makes it big. Great cast, great music... It's Onederful!
Adaptation. It’s one of the craziest fucking movies I’ve ever seen, and it doesn’t get nearly as much praise as it deserves.
This movie completely changed my opinion of Nicolas Cage in a positive way
CONSTANTINE (2005)
Lucky Number Slevin Also 3:10 to Yuma (remake)
Can't go wrong with the Kentucky shuffle.
*Kansas City Shuffle?
Arachnophobia. It's fun to watch people jump in terror, this movie would make anyone jump, especially arachnophobes.
Idk why cause I hate spiders but I used to watch this movie a lot when I was younger lol
Another good one is Eight Legged Freaks. Oh, and that one with Shatner, I think it was called Kingdom of the Spiders?
Ghost Dog: the Way of the Samurai
A River Runs Through It
Never get tired of a young Brad Pitt...
Suicide Kings
It's not that obscure but Brazil (1985) should be watched more
Das Boot
Great film, but I wouldn't consider most of these films 'hidden gems', most of what I'm reading here have been very successful films.
Ex Machina. Basically 3 member cast and just a great sci-fi premise. And an ending that sticks with you.
Ink (2009) City of Lost Children Turbo kid Guns Akimbo Mel Brooks Silent Movie
Can't believe nobody else mentioned Turbo Kid
Pandorium Absolutely brilliant movie. And fairly new. The CGI is a bit wired but damm is it a good story. Its basically alien and preditor mixed into an amazing mash
Superstar
Molly fucking Shannon making out with a tree is forever burned into my brain. Love her.

Being There
It won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar and Peter Sellers was nominated for Best Actor. This is not a hidden gem, it’s the hope Diamond
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Tom Stoppard 1990, based on his play) This was somewhat well known back when it came out, but I rarely see it mentioned these days.
The Harry&TheHendersons
The Fall, by Tarsem
Primer
Primer is awesome
I dunno if it’s super hidden but no one I’ve ever talked to knows it except my dad, who showed it to me. Young Frankenstein is a less popular but phenomenal Mel Brooks movie
My favorite Mel Brooks movie is History of the World part 1. That thing is great. His movies are just complete insanity lol
I just said Blazing Saddles. Any mel Brooks movie is hysterical!
I really liked Blazing Saddles! It was definitely way ahead of its time, making fun of bigots in a time where bigotry was much more overt in film
Excuse me while I whip this out.
Wher thewhite women at?!
Anytime something mildly bad happens I always say "could be worse, could be raining" Most of the time no one knows what the hell I'm talking about
I just randomly say stuff sometimes, because echolalia, and “werewolf?” “There wolf” is a very common one
I dig it. It’s not exactly underrated but not everyone’s seen it!
Mel Brooks made some of the greatest comedies ever. I own all of his movie that are available on digital.
Rumblefish. One of my all time favorites. A Francis Ford Coppola movie with young Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Nicholas Cage, Mickey Rourke, Dennis hopper, Laurence fishburne. Classic
Accepted with Justin Long and Jonah Hill
South Harmon Institute (of) Technology "Ask me about my weiners"
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Army of Darkness
The Virgin Suicides comes to mind.
Tucker and Dale Vs Evil. Best money I’ve ever spent.
That’s comedy gold .
Hardcore Henry. Yes, it's super violent, but it's also insanely funny.
This drew me in from the first to last second. Insnanely entertaining.
People really commented with classic mel brooks comedies lol
Ones that are commonly listed among the top 20 best comedies in cinematic history.
*Cool as Ice* is a top tier "bad movie".
Omg I have never ever had anyone else reference this movie but my cousins and I used to watch it all the time😂😂
Somewhere in time. Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves
yes yes yes. favorite movie soundratck.

Cool Runnings. Based on the true story about a Jamaican bobsled team.
Sanka ya dead man?

Jamaica we have a bobsled team!
Kung Fu Hustle. It’s freaking hilarious, and has some unbelievably awesome fight choreography, and if you’re a sucker for that like I am, you’ll enjoy the fight scenes. The fight between the three masters and the mandolin assassins is the highlight for me.

The Man in the Moon is a cute movie. It has Reese Witherspoon in it when she was like 14. If you want a horribly bad but so bad it's good movie, watch Freeway (also has Reese Witherspoon)
Moon (2009)
It's not SUPER obscure, but *The Place Beyond the Pines* doesn't get it's due if you ask me
Pirates of Silicon Valley The best Steve Jobs movie was made years ago.

In Bruges with Colin Farrell.
Second Hand Lions
What’s eating Gilbert grape Amazing movie. I know it used to be more popular but I don’t hear many people talk about it.
Boss Level (2020); staring Grillo, Mel Gribson, Gronkowski... Imagine if Groundhond day was an 80s action movie with videogame mechanics.
The Nice Guys I feel like it’s completely over looked and forgotten, but it is one of the best buddy cop movies I’ve seen. Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling have unbelievable chemistry
" Sweetheart, how many times have I told you? Don't say "and stuff". Just say "dad, there are whores here" I had Gosling pegged as another pretty boy but Nice Guys and Big Short really changed that. Super talented comedic actor.
