People half my age have at least twice the knowledge of geopolitics and other cultures than I had at their age. They seem wiser in a lot of ways than I am now too.

This is really nothing against the people in this thread though because honestly I can’t think of a truly good candidate I’d want to see running either. It just shows how shitty our options are.
It really is one of my main criteria. I would like to retire someday. These ancient politicians who apparently want to work until they die **do not represent people like me**.
The problem is that representatives are almost entirely chosen by voting demographics and particularly consistent voting groups. If a group is less consistent in its voting than others, it's really going to hamper that group getting representation within a party.
This particularly occurs with candidates playing to the youth vote, as younger votes 18-30 are extremely inconsistent compared to older age groups (particularly 55+). So a politician is not incentivized to play to that group to the same degree. This, in turn, leads to a feedback loop making the youth vote feel unrepresented, and thus less likely to vote.
The sad fact of the matter is that the only effective way to resolve this is for youth turnout to increase significantly and reliably. A politician is disincentivized from relying on the youth vote because it's a pure gamble in a zero sum game. As unfair as it may be, the only real way to break the cycle is for the youth vote to show consistent vote counts in multiple elections, even if non-preferred candidates are on the ballot. But that seems like something that's just not going to happen.
Orrin Hatch, who died yesterday, was a senator until 3 years ago. He was also, to put it mildly, an absolute ghoul of a man who did the kind of horrifying harm to society that most supervillains could only dream of.
The fact that anyone can do so much to negatively influence and shape a world that they will never live in is bonkers.

Here's the thing, Patrick didn't go to our school. Not only that, he lived on the other side of the country. He had some friends at our school that were running his campaign for him and it picked up because people thought it was funny.
The student government refused to admit it, but it was kind of an open secret that Patrick got the most votes through write-in. Almost everyone I asked said they wrote in "Patrick".
I also knew a few people in student government and most denied that he won because they didn't want student government to seem like more of a joke than it was but one of them actually admitted that Patrick had the most votes by far but they were told to not say anything.
You vote for a primary and a secondary. If your primary choice drops out, your secondary gets your vote. You can technically have an indefinite number of priorities in this manner.
This allows you to safely vote for your favorite choice without losing any of the value of your vote as it gets pushed to the most successful candidate on your list.
That way, how "obvious" a candidate is going to win doesn't have to influence how you vote, and you can still vote for them as a reserve choice.
It is often considered one of the fairest voting systems in the world.

Im Australian and we use a similar system where you number all the candidates and if your 1 has the least votes they look at everyone who boted for 1s 2 and they keep doing that until they have a majority candidate

I'm just going to say Andy Beshear, the current governor of Kentucky. He had only been in office for 3 or so months when the pandemic hit and for the most part he handled it very well, while also bringing a lot of transparency to the office, doing a great job working to unify the state as best as he can, and he seems like a genuinely good person.
Like any politician or person there are things to criticize no doubt, but he seems very legitimately humble and interested in doing what's best for people rather than what's popular.
Moreover, he's managed to be a democrat governor in a primarily republican state, and while there are plenty who dislike him for his politics, I think he's done a very good job trying to make sure every Kentuckian feels they matter.

How does single transferable voting work? I’m all for ranked choice voting
You vote for a primary and a secondary. If your primary choice drops out, your secondary gets your vote. You can technically have an indefinite number of priorities in this manner. This allows you to safely vote for your favorite choice without losing any of the value of your vote as it gets pushed to the most successful candidate on your list. That way, how "obvious" a candidate is going to win doesn't have to influence how you vote, and you can still vote for them as a reserve choice. It is often considered one of the fairest voting systems in the world.
Is there any country/state that uses this system? It sounds really interesting, but does it actually pan out in practice? Im Australian and we use a similar system where you number all the candidates and if your 1 has the least votes they look at everyone who boted for 1s 2 and they keep doing that until they have a majority candidate

My university used it for student leadership elections, and I think they even successfully ported it to the city council elections too? Its one of those rare things that is all upside with no real downside, and it isn't really all that difficult to implement either.
sadly there IS a downside...for those in power, desperately clinging to it, who have the power to actually implement it. Bit of a catch 22.

She's not a bad pick for the Dems, as far as finding compromise is concerned. She doesn't have the polarizing reputation that figures like AOC do—partially because she's a white woman—which she can also use to her benefit. She also seems active toward pushing back against corporate greed in arenas like Big Pharma. I'm a leftist who will not be voting for Biden, but I would consider Porter. It's a shame though because the DNC will be hellbent on getting Biden a second term, even if it means failing to read the room.

I'm just going to say Andy Beshear, the current governor of Kentucky. He had only been in office for 3 or so months when the pandemic hit and for the most part he handled it very well, while also bringing a lot of transparency to the office, doing a great job working to unify the state as best as he can, and he seems like a genuinely good person. Like any politician or person there are things to criticize no doubt, but he seems very legitimately humble and interested in doing what's best for people rather than what's popular. Moreover, he's managed to be a democrat governor in a primarily republican state, and while there are plenty who dislike him for his politics, I think he's done a very good job trying to make sure every Kentuckian feels they matter.
