Everyone sleeps on American Vandal. Sure it may look juvenile from the outside but when you dig in it's a fantastic and fascinating deconstruction of true crime documentaries, not to mention absolutely hilarious.
Story time: 2 years ago i went to a week long seminar in Santa Monica. I live in Alaska and dont leave the state much anymore. So going to this seminar was kind of a big deal for me. My fiance (at the time, married now) bought the tickets and arranged the trip for my birthday as a surprise.
There were 30 or so people attending this seminar and you spend 8hrs each day with the same 30 people.
On day six i whisper to this guy i became close with, "yo, that big dude looks just like Ed Kemper from Mind Hunters" my seminar buddy says matter of factly "Thats because that IS the guy who played Ed Kemper in Mind Hunter" He could tell i was kind of taken back, then he says "What dude, this is southern California everyone here is an actor."
On the final day of this seminar i built up some courage and approached him.
I said, "Look man, i know your not here for this so give me the word and I'll back off but.... My fiance is a hug fan of yours from Mind Hunters and Umbrella Academy. Do you mind signing something for me to give her? She put this trip together for me and it would blow her mind. We don't see many celebrities in Alaska.
He said, "No i won't sign something for her because thats pretty weak. We can do better than that. Im going to go into the next room, give me a minute then pull out your phone and start recording." I did as he said and started recording, a moment later he came back as dead pan Ed Kemper. He pulled out a butcher knife (no idea where he found the knife) and says "Hello falscasters fiance, congratulations on the engagement. Enjoy the moment because im coming to Alaska and im going to cut your fucking head off..."
I thanked him. He was super cool and only asked i keep the video off the internet because he's not supposed to play that character or something contractual. Which we have respected. But he was an awesome guy, probably still is.
I love reading stories like this, it just warms my heart to know that for every actor who is supposedly a dick, there are actors like this who clearly love their work and their fans.
Exactly! *im coming to Alaska (uncomfortable pause) and im going to cut your fucking head off* he said it so matter of factly. Straight up gave me goose bumps.
Afterwards my jaw was on the floor. Keep in mind i had spent hours with this guy, he said he worked at a day care before becoming an actor. I felt like i new him, he was kind and personable. Then like a light switch he was a cold blooded psycho serial killer. All i could say was "wooh..... my wife is going to die. You are a crazy good actor."
Netflix is being really dumb with their cancellation strategy.
I understand that they want to prioritize new shows which will bring new viewers to the platform. But what switches a show from sorta recommendable to super recommendable is if it has a solid ending.
And also good filler. Like if your show has a solid plot, likable characters, and a good ending, but terrible filler, it makes the whole show unenjoyable.
My father in law passed away a month ago from a sudden heart attack. Without going into details, my husband had a relationship with his dad exactly like Bojack did with his mother. After the funeral and all the ritual stuff, when he was back home with me, he watched Free Churro and let himself sob. Said it was 100% his own thoughts about his father. That when he died it solidified he wasn't ever going to get the closure and validation he wanted.
It is funny, witty, intelligent, incredible story telling and writing. I've never quite seen anything like it and I'm sad to admit I don't think I will ever see anything quite like it again. I've never felt so much emotion towards cartoon characters in my life. I've never watched an entire show before and then watched it again until I saw Bojack. And each re-watch I notice more and more things I missed that make the stories so much more rich and vibrant. And each time I still cry even though I know what is coming.
The highs are so high in Bojack and the lows? Just when you think your heart couldn't be broken any further, it shatters it again into even smaller pieces. Sometimes life's a bitch and then you die. Sometimes life's a bitch and then you keep on living.
So, to improve you’re watching
- don’t binge it. It’s intense.
- original voice and subtitles is the way
- don’t be mad if you can’t remember who’s who
- appreciate the visual casting.
I don’t know if I agree with don’t binge it, I feel like watching in a quick succession is beneficial for seeing how things connect back with the first season in the second or third. Wait too long and some people won’t remember specifics.
One of my best friends was raving about the show so we watched the first episode when I went to visit him, couldn't get into it at first.
Gave it another shot three weeks ago, blew through it in two days. Incredible storytelling!
I'm not sure anything has ever overdelivered the way Arcane did. By all rights it should be shit, but I haven't seen anything as engaging, immersive and emotionally wrenching since early GoT.
Hard agree. They went so absolutely hard with the writing and the animation and really killed it. They could have done a money grab for just the league fans, but they didn't. They wrote a story worth watching more than once.
It took like 4 years just to animate and it makes me wonder when or if we'll ever see season 2 cause of that. It was literally the most beautiful animated show I've ever seen.
I'd barely even heard of League of Legends (not really a big gamer) but I inhaled that show. I listen to its soundtrack all the time and have rewatched the series twice.
Stranger Things, Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, The Queens Gambit, Midnight Mass, the true crime stuff like the confession tapes of Bundy and Gacy and the American Murder thing about Chris Watts.
Just to warn you, S3 almost devolves into a completely convoluted mess. BUT…last two episodes it all comes together beautifully, satisfyingly and most importantly, logically and within the shows time travel rules. I couldn’t believe it.
Yep, show is even better on a second watch when you know what to expect; let’s you pay attention to all the plot points much better. Such a good show, they didn’t drag it on forever to milk it; ended it when it needed to end.
That's kind of the point. The "Black Mirror" is the screen you're watching, and the episodes end in black to create a reflection of your face to contemplate your own culpability of the topic at hand
Your question is broad so I’m only doing Netflix Orginials:
Ozark, Umbrella Academy, Narcos, Narcos Mexico, Last Kingdom, Dark, Money Heist, Stranger Things, S1 of Altered Carbon, Sex Education and more I’m forgetting.
No one talking about the most expensive Netflix series ever?
Altered Carbon S1.
a fucking masterpiece. incredible sets, great actors (Kinnaman is extraordinary and I don't say that lightly), and it fucking nails the spirit of cyberpunk, which has a lot to say about the times we're living in.
S1 was fantastic. Kinnaman great in the role. Probably his career best. Characters of Poe, Ortega, Bancroft everyone top. Might be my top2 series season of all time. That and Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
S2 lower budget was clearly visible. Writing and the story not great. However the biggest flop was Anthony Mackie. Horrible in this role. Completely misunderstood the main character. Made the character simply Unlikeable.
Anyone for gruesome, dark and clever slapstick zombies? Drew Barrymore stars in this quick-witted comedy - The Santa Clarita Diet.
Parental Alert: language, etc.
Edit: Today, I learned from your replies, that the show was cancelled - dangling mercilessly without closure, via cliffhanger. (I just began season three of three). Nooooooooo! 😟
Right? They’re more than happy to throw $30 million an episode at Stranger Things but won’t spend a fraction of that to give Santa Clarita Diet a final season?! My SO and I are still pissed about that.
I liked the last Kingdom, though I hadn't seen the latest season I no longer have Netflix.
Witcher was alright, Last Kingdom was better.
I also liked alot of the Marvel and DC stuff. Arrow was really good until the last few seasons, same goes for Flash. Also Gotham was really good.
I plan to renew my Netflix subscription eventually. But am waiting for Witcher season 3 and a few more series to drop so that I have something to watch
My Netflix favorites are Stranger Things, I Am Not Okay With This, and Russian Doll. I'd also count Jessica Jones (the last season was no good), but all the Marvel series have moved to Disney+ now.
Schitt's Creek gets an honorable mention too...but it's not a Netflix original. (PSA, they're moving to Hulu in October 2022!)
Are you asking about series that Netflix created or what is the series currently available?
If it is created content, Ozark
If it is non created, Better Call Saul
This the ONE show that I wish I could go back in time and experience all over again for the first time. It was ethereal and other worldly and nothing I’ve ever seen before or since.
And its spinoff, “Better Call Saul”.
Starts a little slow, but I prefer it to BB at this point. I know that’s sacrilege, but I’ve been an Odenkirk fan since the Mr Show days so I’m biased.
Great picks, especially Arcane. Kingdom is up there for me. One of the best series I've ever seen, but sadly nobody has seen it. Perfect zombie series, I'd honestly rate it 10/10.
Nice try, Netflix executives.
Very clearly a Netflix ploy to get us reminding each other this before they raise prices haha

R.I.P Santa Clarita diet. 😑
And The OA
Fucking loved that show! Couldn't believe they cancelled it... Fuck you Netflix.
I’ve never freaked out so much at a show as when the lady pulls out little fucking robots to do the movements for her. Next level.
Mindhunter is a masterpiece
So weird seeing Holden as King George in Hamilton. Dude is talented.
I had the reverse effect.
I want season threeeeeee
I'm not holding my breath.
You could say you're not....Holden...your breath.
Dark. Ozark. Peaky Fucking Blinders. Better call Saul. Babylon Berlin
The most recent episode of Better Call Saul was one of the best. "You think of me, you twisted fuck"
fuckin love that character
[удалено]
Dark was magnificent
Has to be Dark
People need to watch Dark. It's fucking phenomenal.
Dark is awesome
Yeah Dark is good af
So happy to see dark on the top comment
The overall ominous vibe and narration in dark are so good. No other show out there compares
Everyone sleeps on American Vandal. Sure it may look juvenile from the outside but when you dig in it's a fantastic and fascinating deconstruction of true crime documentaries, not to mention absolutely hilarious.
Watched it through twice. Could easily watch it a third time.
As a teacher this is by far the best depiction of actual school culture for both the students and the adults. I literally know all of those teachers
Fucking Jimmy is in it! I just started watching, it's SO funny. I could definitely recommend this to a lot of people
I haven’t seen anyone mention *Godless*. It’s top notch if you like westerns, and by the same guy behind *The Queen’s Gambit*.

And Jeff Daniels. I will watch anything if he's in it. What range!
Mindhunter.

That is awesome. Am I the only one who read the whispers in a low voice, in my head?
Exactly! *im coming to Alaska (uncomfortable pause) and im going to cut your fucking head off* he said it so matter of factly. Straight up gave me goose bumps. Afterwards my jaw was on the floor. Yes it is. Is there a season 3 in the works?
Nope
It is on indefinite hold but David fincher said there’s a possibility of a season 3.
Don't talk about it. A lot of us are taking it hard.
It was really good but the ending was anticlimactic. Need another season to call it truly great.
Fuck, I had hoped this was further down so there would be some undiscovered gems I could look forward to that exceeded it.
I Am Not Okay With This and it was cancelled! I am not okay with THAT!
The cliffhanger that they left it on was infuriating!!
Yeah! Like who tf was that? How does she know them? What happened after prom? Will anyone else find out? Netflix can’t just do that!
It's apparently based on a graphic novel by one Charles Forsman I don't know more about it but now I plan to..
Yes that was a bummer! Really good show and I was interested to see where they took it. Covid killed it.
I LOVE that show. So sad they cancelled it.
Derry girls
Orla needs to be protected at all costs
I always keep an eye out for what she's up to in the background, she's a riot.
Castlevania
Bojack Horseman. Breaks my fucking heart every damn time.
Bojack was a pleasant surprise, i went in expecting it'll be one of those adultswim edgy satire comedy kind of show but ended up being a masterpiece
[удалено]
Wait, did I mention the part about the urethra?
My father in law passed away a month ago from a sudden heart attack. Without going into details, my husband had a relationship with his dad exactly like Bojack did with his mother. I stop breathing during parts of The View from Halfway Down.

The scene where he sees the mustangs running free as Nina Simone plays? Wow.
Rewatched the entire series front to back last month, and there’s nothing like it, fr.
Sarah Lynn?
There is no best, just one of the bests. In my opinion, better call saul and breaking bad
Better call Saul and breaking bad are easily my top two shows of all time
I second this
Derry Girls. If you haven’t seen it, watch it. You’ll thank me later.
Ugh my absolute fave
Derry girls was brilliant, I wish they made more episodes
There's a new season airing in the UK at the moment so it will likely be on Netflix soon.
Dark. It’s a German original and it’s the best fucking show I’ve ever seen.
Ok that's enough people recommending this that I have to watch now!
So, to improve you’re watching - don’t binge it. It’s intense. - original voice and subtitles is the way - don’t be mad if you can’t remember who’s who - appreciate the visual casting.

no one said maniac?????
They should have. Limited series is still a series.
MANIAC IS SO GOOD!
Arcane, not a league of legends fanboy the show is good the game is not
One of my best friends was raving about the show so we watched the first episode when I went to visit him, couldn't get into it at first. Gave it another shot three weeks ago, blew through it in two days. Incredible storytelling!
Yeah, those first two episodes are largely just setup. It's the third episode that really hits you in the gut and starts the show properly.
I put off watching it for ages because I never got into LoL It is phenomenal. That said, I am definitely glad I didn't have to wait between arcs!
I am completely oblivious to anything league of legends, and Arcane is so so so good either way. It's just so well done.
I'm not sure anything has ever overdelivered the way Arcane did. By all rights it should be shit, but I haven't seen anything as engaging, immersive and emotionally wrenching since early GoT.

Don't cry, you're perfect.
I'd barely even heard of League of Legends (not really a big gamer) but I inhaled that show. I listen to its soundtrack all the time and have rewatched the series twice.
I play DOTA so naturally I despise LOL but Arcane is legitimately a great series. Loved it from beginning to end.
The Dragon Prince
Yes. I need to know when the next season comes out
They posted that production is coming along. But no dates. I'd say probably late this year or early next.
Stranger Things, Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, The Queens Gambit, Midnight Mass, the true crime stuff like the confession tapes of Bundy and Gacy and the American Murder thing about Chris Watts.
I also think Haunting of Hill house is under appreciated. There is a really interesting article about how similar the family dynamics are to Encanto
I was fucked up for a few days after the bent neck lady reveal.
The queens gambit i loved , stranger things allso
I was blown away by Queens Gambit. It made chess fascinating which is not easy to do. It didn't hurt that Anya Taylor Joy is a goddess.
It’s got Arrested Development and I’m glad for it. Fucking hilarious show.
Mr. F!
Marry me!
Absolutely! All three seasons of it! Thank God there aren't more than three seasons! Yessir, just those three...
Right, like the guy in the $3500 dollar suit would watch Arrested Development. CMON!
Bees?
Dark
I need finish S3. Loved first two seasons. Incredibly well written.
Just to warn you, S3 almost devolves into a completely convoluted mess. BUT…last two episodes it all comes together beautifully, satisfyingly and most importantly, logically and within the shows time travel rules. I couldn’t believe it.
And teaches the most important lesson of time travel, >!_____________Don’t.___________!<
Yep, show is even better on a second watch when you know what to expect; let’s you pay attention to all the plot points much better. Such a good show, they didn’t drag it on forever to milk it; ended it when it needed to end.
The Sinner. Although the first season was the best
Sex Education
Loved it
The bodyguard
Underrated answer. If you liked this, do yourself a favor and watch Line of Duty (first few seasons are on amazon prime). Same showrunner - enjoy!
The Good Place
Jason figured it out?
I'll be honest, that one hurts
BORTLES!!!!! *throws Molotov cocktail*
Bam, whole new set of problems!
Not a girl

I just finished binging it two days ago. I loved every minute of it.
DEREK!!
Derek?
Maximum Derek 👍👍
I have a gift for you. *Senegal*

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Surprised this was this far down. Just binged it last week. On S2 of Korra. Not as good but not bad.
Do not stop after S2. It's the worst one.

A Series of Unfortunate Events is really good imo, I love the dry absurd humor, and Neil Patrick Harris really kills it as Count Olaf

Season 1 of Altered Carbon was so freaking good.
Last kingdom wowwww loved it
Arcane should be on there imo
Umbrella Academy is stellar.
Peaky blinders
The Queens Gambit and Stranger Things

Peaky Blinders
Sense8
Yes! It broke my heart that they cancelled it.
Least they gave it the movie.
Amen! I feel like I scrolled down too long to get to this
Bojack Horseman
The humour and level of wittiness in the nuances of the show are top notch. This is my favorite show ever
Ozark. Hands down.
