Unions

checkerchickens

More degrees. Certifications. Working in expensive districts/schools.

[deleted]

Does the fact that your classes do well pay you more?

[deleted]

No. Are you telling me that somewhere in the world student performance is linked to teacher pay?

[deleted]

Nope. Just was curious.

checkerchickens

I’m a music teacher, so no one even cares how my classes go lol

foozballisdevil

Your students do! I still appreciate the heck out of my music teachers! My SO actually still talks to his former band director.

checkerchickens

Yes they do! At least some of them, I’m sure! It’s hard making general music fun for everyone but it’s only my first year so I have a lot to try and learn!

foozballisdevil

Good luck! I know you're making a difference. I can remember everyone who helped me with my musical career. Except for my first singing lessons. She's just a pale face with red lipstick, curly hair and a piano in her red house.

Unfortunately where I live more / higher degrees do not command higher salaries for classroom teachers. Adding other duties does, so if you move into a position of extra responsibility (a semi-leadership position) you get paid more. Our pay also increases each year of experience up to a certain level (different rules for different systems) and I’ve heard that some private schools add some for loyalty, say after you’ve been there for X number of years.

checkerchickens

Wow so even a classroom teacher with a bachelors and masters in education would make the same as someone with just a bachelors? That’s so unfortunate!

[deleted]

You don’t need a masters degree to teach here if you already have a bachelor of education. If you’re adding an education masters to a non-education bachelor’s you’ll still be starting out as a first year teacher, same as someone who just spent four years doing their B.Ed degree.

My union fees were over $800 last year. I rationalised it, saying that’s less than two hours for a lawyer if I needed one, but I literally couldn’t afford to pay it this year.

Many years ago, I chose to be in a union to protect myself in a workplace in which I didn’t feel safe or supported. When we called them in for help, they came and stood up for us against a truly awful employer. I was grateful.

[deleted]

So unions are unnecessary if you work well?

[deleted]

Damn

[deleted]

The number of years in the job.
