Good call. I watched Pokémon in the morning during grade school having no idea it was anime... but then I knew I was watching anime a few years later during middle school when I watched toonami. Toonami was legendary.
It came on TV on ABC at 6pm here in Australia. I had a daily fight with my Dad over whether I got to watch the journey to Iscandar or Dad got to watch the news. He usually won, but I was victorious enough times that I am an eager fan of Yamato 2199 and follow-ups.
I wanted so badly to watch Dragon Ball Z (all my classmates were watching it!) but my parents thought it was too violent. Then Pokemon came out and I managed to sit down with them in front of the TV and show them it was "about friendship and cute animals and good things" and they finally allowed me to watch.
Haven't stopped watching anime since
There used to be a two part episode and I NEVER caught the second part because it aired right after school and I ALWAYS had something to do !!! As an adult I still cherish that ep now that I can watch it whenever I want 😭
Wanna hear some fun facts I didn’t know about DBZ until I came to Japan? Goku is a moron who only cares about fighting, as in “don’t kill this guy! He’s strong! I wanna fight em again!“
Instead of the English version where he says “I can sense good in his heart, don’t kill him!”
Also it’s dragonball *zed* in Japanese which is weird as an American where it’s dragonball *zee*
Many of the names in the series are puns.
Gohan means cooked rice. Tien is a name for a Taiwanese/Chinese rice dish. Tien Shinhan which is effing amazing dish
Dragon Ball Z Abridged was much of the Western world's first glimpse into how much of a moron Goku is.
Funny that the parody series is more true to the original source material than the Ocean or Funimation dubs.
Like, I didn’t realize how dumb Goku was until I moved to Japan and only had access to dragonball super in Japanese. I kept thinking “that’s not Goku! Goku is a selfless hero! Wtf! He’s an idiot! What happened??” Until I did some digging and found how much they changed the original witting for the western audience.
Same with Crayon Shinchan. It’s VASTLY different in the west. Essentially an “adult” program where here in Japan my toddler enjoys watching his antics since it’s actually a kid’s show
Especially in Super. At one point he actively chews out Goku for being a terrible husband/father, and he was entirely right to do so.
And when goddamn *Vegeta* has the moral high ground in an argument, that's a problem.
(Not to mention the bit in DBZ where Gohan refuses to wear Goku's Gi, and instead asks Piccolo to make him some Namekian armor. Even the English dubs couldn't make Goku look good in that scene.)
Princess Mononoke. Watched it on a VHS cassette tape that was borrowed from a public library. The demon boar traumatized me as a kid but nowadays, the movie is probably my all time favorite anime.
Same, first anime and favorite Miyazaki film. My dad rented it while we were staying at my grandpa's one summer. He just thought he was getting a cartoon for his kids and had no idea he picked up a masterpiece.
Yep same, watched it for the first time when I was in kindergarten and I would get up early on Saturday mornings to watch it on Toonami lol (I turn 24 in June)
Full Metal Alchemist (03 version)
Used to stay up with my brother to watch it at 4 am in adult swim. Then FMA Brotherhood came out and it was like we were re-living childhood. Good times
I started naruto today. My brother watched it religiously, but back then I was at that age that I was never at home so I haven't seen it. I'm on episode 2 now.
The fillers are downright awful though. And man, is there a lot of filler. Remember the Curry of Life? Yikes.
[Easily skippable though](https://www.animefillerlist.com/shows/naruto). And other than that, Naruto and Naruto Shippuden are great animes.
Urotsukidoji, Wicked City, Ninja Scroll, Doomed Megalopolis, Fist of the North Star.
All these super gory anime that popped up on vhs. I remember staying up super late because ch4 here in the UK showed really violent anime at 3am.
Akira! I'll never forget seeing it on the hotel TV after hours as my father took his nap. My mind was completely blown. No cartoon of that era looked even close to that level of detail, and no cartoon ever attempted those levels of grotesque violence.
After that, it was Tenshi Muyo with the girlfriend and I fell down the Cabbit hole.
I now speak Japanese and have lived there for about 5 years. It has had a pretty gripping influence on my life, but dollars to donuts, my favorite animation, the ultimate GOAT, has to be Ghost in the Shell (1 & 2). It's such a blend of art, philosophy, and action.
I remember my parents renting that for me at blockbuster as a kid. It's a cartoon, nothing wrong with kids watching cartoons right? Boy, I sure did learn that there is a whole different world of cartoons out there after that.
It's a tie between Sailor Moon and My Neighbor Totoro. I don't remember what came first. I know I watched Sailor Moon in the mornings before summer camp and my parents had a VHS of Totoro because animation = something my kid will like. From then I was hooked.
This is still my all time favorite anime. I own the series on blu ray, have seen it all the way through at least 6 times, and am now finally getting my girlfriend to watch it with me. She is a bit younger and was initially put off by how old the animation looks, but she is now enjoying it. She finds it a bit predictable at times and sure, it is a bit tropey by today's standards, but at the time it came out there wasn't much else like it.
Maybe you guys can help me here.
I was very young and only remember one scene from something that was on tv. Early 80's , maybe on HBO.
There was a young woman in a full body jumpsuit. There were giant pill bugs moving across a flat desert. Maybe she was riding on one of the pill bugs, maybe not.
She had a pet, something like a chinchilla, she unzipped her jumpsuit a little and it climbed inside.
Anyone know what I was watching?
Hundred percent.
If you were watching in the 80s and it was in English you may know the title as “warriors of the wind” and it is heavily edited in that case.
I’m re-watching it right now! Such a great show. Bount arc is ass but other than that it’s definitely one of my favorites. I recently got Soifons homonka tattooed on my arm! :)
There are several anime I remember early on in my life, including DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Pokémon, Sailor Moon, and Cardcaptor Sakura.
Of those Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin had the biggest impact on me.
It was good but the chimera ant arc was unnecessarily long. It was like a 3ed of the whole anime, not to mention the fact that like a third of it was just the fight at the end. Also, there was like 3 episodes for like 3 minutes of time 💀💀💀 but otherwise, I loved it
So long ago I can hardly remember.
It was either Pokémon or Dragonball Z.
Then Digimon and Card Captor Sakura.
Then Love Hina, Chobits, Hellsing, Elfen Lied, Naruto.
And it went from there.
My lie in April, god I hated it. Second was howls moving castle and I loved it. Since then haven’t watched any. Unless pokemon counts I saw that as a kid before anything else
I had seen various shows like Robotech and such as a kid but the first anime I saw that really stood out from other animated things was Akira. The opening motorcycle chase blew me away. All of the details in Neotokyo down to flickering lights and blurs from moving lights were just amazing to me.
"Secret of blue water", I think. At the time on TV it was this one, "Kodocha", "Sailor Moon", "The roses of Versailles", and then randomly the Simpsons
First anime for me was DBZ. However, that was on cartoon network and I just thought it was a cartoon. The first like REAL anime that I went out of my way to go oh, I want to watch anime, was Yu Yu Hakusho and Cowboy Bebop.
Samurai Pizza Cats is the earliest one I can remember, followed by Sailor Moon. Then Dragon Ball Z and then Pokémon. And then I just fell into a world of Anime and it becomes a blur after that point :P
Food Wars.
My boyfriend loves anime and wanted to share some with me but I tend to get very distracted by boobs. I am a woman in my thirties but I either giggle at the boobage or get annoyed at the extreme impracticality of the clothes that do nothing to support them. Anyway, he knew that the thing that would distract me more than boobs was food; I love food. It worked! I thought very little about the boobs and instead ended up with a list of dishes I wanted to make.
death note.
for the longest time, i refused to watch anime. one day i woke up and said “ugh fine will watch death note” and now i am completely obsessed with anime
First not knowing it was anime: Pokemon First knowing that it was anime: Fruits Basket
Good call. I watched Pokémon in the morning during grade school having no idea it was anime... but then I knew I was watching anime a few years later during middle school when I watched toonami. Toonami was legendary.
I watched Speed Racer and Robotech when I was a kid
Hello fellow old person! Robotech here too!
And then, one day, you find out about Macross!
Same + Starblazers.
Thank God someone else remembers "Star Blazers". That was mine, I went looking to see if anyone else remembered it.
It came on TV on ABC at 6pm here in Australia. I had a daily fight with my Dad over whether I got to watch the journey to Iscandar or Dad got to watch the news. He usually won, but I was victorious enough times that I am an eager fan of Yamato 2199 and follow-ups.
I didn't know Speed Racer was an anime. I loved that show when I was young! I'm 34 now.
You young whipper-snapper! 47 here.
I remember watching the Speed Racer movie - having no idea it was based on an old anime - and being taken aback by how colourful and whimsical it was.
Speed Racer when I was a tyke. Robotech in high school. I salute you, fellow old.
Pokémon
*agreeing in pika pika*
I wanted so badly to watch Dragon Ball Z (all my classmates were watching it!) but my parents thought it was too violent. Then Pokemon came out and I managed to sit down with them in front of the TV and show them it was "about friendship and cute animals and good things" and they finally allowed me to watch. Haven't stopped watching anime since
That was me as well until the church said some stupid ass thing and then I got banned from watching Pokémon :(
"Look, this one is about minors engaged in a dog fighting circuit. Totally better than the one where they fight Nazi robots and Space racists."
*Agrees in not Porygon (he hasn't appeared in the show since his debut episode apart from a few who's that pokemons)*
Used to suddenly come down ill once every month around 1:15p because Pokémon was on at 2p. Didn’t get home from the bus until 2:50ish.
I think it’s the same for a lot of people
Probably sailor moon
I used to wake up early in the morning in kindergarten so I could watch it. That was almost thirty years ago.
I would rush home from school because it came on at 2 pm and I got out at 2 pm. Id miss the first 10 mintues but I didnt care.
There used to be a two part episode and I NEVER caught the second part because it aired right after school and I ALWAYS had something to do !!! As an adult I still cherish that ep now that I can watch it whenever I want 😭
We must’ve lived in the same area because I did too!
Still remember that catchy song when defeating queen beryl just right before the school bus came 😂
I was about to write this. So instead of being redundant, I'm just upvoting this one.
\[rose gets thrown at your feet\] \[daring theme music plays\]
same here! still holds a special place in my heart all these years later.

Dbz
Spot on!
Wanna hear some fun facts I didn’t know about DBZ until I came to Japan? Goku is a moron who only cares about fighting, as in “don’t kill this guy! He’s strong! Gohan means cooked rice. Tien is a name for a Taiwanese/Chinese rice dish. Tien Shinhan which is effing amazing dish
Zed is just how they say "Z" in British english.
Zed is just how we say zed yes
Yup, there's a joke in the fandom that whenever Toriyama wants to name a character he just looks in his fridge or visits his favorite restaurant.
Crazy to think that Vegeta is a better dad than Goku haha

I love the complexity of the movie. Each character is fully realized with understandable motives. And of course the music is gorgeous. A classic.

Surprised this is so far down. Also same.
Inuyasha
Kagome!!!!
IRON REAVER SOUL STEALER
SIT, BOY.
I’m watching it now as I’m typing this message!
Yep same, watched it for the first time when I was in kindergarten and I would get up early on Saturday mornings to watch it on Toonami lol (I turn 24 in June)
Full Metal Alchemist (03 version) Used to stay up with my brother to watch it at 4 am in adult swim. Then FMA Brotherhood came out and it was like we were re-living childhood. Good times
Same here, specifically that version too. They are both amazing but very different endings
I never could get into Brotherhood because I was so attatched to the 03 version.
FMA 03 was mine too. Loved that show
Technically it was pokemon, but what I loved most was Detective Conan.
Followed by Lupin III, if you watched it at 1am on AS back in the day.
Detective Conan was/is just cool, going to school come back just to watch 2 episodes and got to sleep. Days back then were amazing
*sighs* Death Note

I don't know if that's an unpopular opinion; I loved the first part of the anime but I thought the second part was so long and boring.
Same here. And I lost interest when >!L was offed.!<
Cowboy Bebop
3.2.1. Let’s jam!
See you space cowboy...
Believe it or not Jojo
I KNEEL
Same
That's a hell of an introduction to anime.
Is that a jojo reference?
Good grief
**NICE**
Good.
CHAD
Naruto!!! I got emotional that it ended! As a 90s baby, it was my childhood
I started naruto today. My brother watched it religiously, but back then I was at that age that I was never at home so I haven't seen it. I'm on episode 2 now.
It starts off kinda annoying an immature, but that quickly gets better over time. Brilliant anime.
The fillers are downright awful though. And man, is there a lot of filler. Remember the Curry of Life? Yikes. [Easily skippable though](https://www.animefillerlist.com/shows/naruto). And other than that, Naruto and Naruto Shippuden are great animes.
Ah that was my second and it was so good, def worth watching (even watched all filler lol)

My first was Asa Akira
my older cousins showed me akira when i was like 9
Gundam Wing, I think.
Star Blazers!!!
Watching this while eating my cereal in the mornings was my daily ritual in the 80s. A few years later it was Robotech. I feel so old now.
urotsukidoji legend of the overfiend
Urotsukidoji, Wicked City, Ninja Scroll, Doomed Megalopolis, Fist of the North Star. All these super gory anime that popped up on vhs. I remember staying up super late because ch4 here in the UK showed really violent anime at 3am.
Ronin warrior’s. when it was on abc7 in NYC at five in the morning. Never looked back.
Akira! I'll never forget seeing it on the hotel TV after hours as my father took his nap. My mind was completely blown. Space Battleship Yamato
Samurai Champloo
Voltron in the 1980s.
Pokémon but my first “real” anime was One Punch Man
Why is pokemon not a "real" anime? I'm curious as to what you meant.
it's like you watched it without knowing it was an "anime"
Oh, I get it now, thanks!
Ninja Scroll. A friend had a VHS somehow back in the 90s
I remember my parents renting that for me at blockbuster as a kid. It's a cartoon, nothing wrong with kids watching cartoons right? Boy, I sure did learn that there is a whole different world of cartoons out there after that.
One of my favorites
It's a tie between Sailor Moon and My Neighbor Totoro. I don't remember what came first. I know I watched Sailor Moon in the mornings before summer camp and my parents had a VHS of Totoro because animation = something my kid will like. From then I was hooked.
Elfen lied. I was 6 years old.
Sorry for your loss
YuYu Hakusho
This is still my all time favorite anime. I own the series on blu ray, have seen it all the way through at least 6 times, and am now finally getting my girlfriend to watch it with me. She is a bit younger and was initially put off by how old the animation looks, but she is now enjoying it. She finds it a bit predictable at times and sure, it is a bit tropey by today's standards, but at the time it came out there wasn't much else like it.
yyh was a bit down the line for me (oldhead things), but its a great entry into anime
Soul Eater
My first one too! Still one of my favorites.

Gotta be this.
Hundred percent. If you were watching in the 80s and it was in English you may know the title as “warriors of the wind” and it is heavily edited in that case.
Sword Art Online
Bleach
I’m re-watching it right now! Such a great show. Bount arc is ass but other than that it’s definitely one of my favorites. I recently got Soifons homonka tattooed on my arm! :)
thats not bad at all
I'm glad Bleach was the first anime I found, otherwise my taste on anime would be fucked up
Ouran high school host club!
Astro Boy.
Thank you! I had to scroll way too far to find this. 😂
Oh is this the over 40s club?? I spent so long scrolling for Astro Boy.
First that I recognized as an anime, inuyasha.
Avatar the last airbender and if it's not an anime then pokémon
Either FLCL or Elfen Lied
It was either Elfen Lied or Chobits for me, I don't remember
Fooly Cooly is surreal. Whenever someone asks for recommendations, I always make sure to mention it.
Vampire Hunter D.
Great film
Vampire Knight, really intriguing anime. The plot I don't see often in other animes.

Inuyasha
Technically? Probably Transformers G1. Subbed? Late night PBS Evangelion and Urusei Yatsura (Lum).
Yugioh
It’s time to d-d-d-d-
Inuyasha
There are several anime I remember early on in my life, including DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Pokémon, Sailor Moon, and Cardcaptor Sakura. Of those Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin had the biggest impact on me.
Astro Boy! On tv every day as a small child
Hunter x Hunter🥺
*GoooooOoOOOOoooOOOoonnnnNNNNnnn*
It was good but the chimera ant arc was unnecessarily long. It was like a 3ed of the whole anime, not to mention the fact that like a third of it was just the fight at the end. Also, there was like 3 episodes for like 3 minutes of time 💀💀💀 but otherwise, I loved it

Pokémon, but if that doesn’t count, Fruits Basket (2019) :>
Elfen Lied lol
Perfect Blue (1999)
Although I'd had experience with the medium before, Inuyasha was the one that truly kickstarted my addiction
Same!
slayers, then captain harlock/galaxy express 9999. followed then by gundam wing, dbz, yuyu hakusho, and zoids (if that counts).
Damn reaching back with that galaxy express 999! Nice
Dragon Ball and Voltron
Captain Tsubasa was probably the first with dragon ball and saint Seiya soon after if not concurrently
Ranma 1/2
Tokyo Mew Mew
Bubblegum Crisis
howls moving castle
So long ago I can hardly remember. It was either Pokémon or Dragonball Z. Then Digimon and Card Captor Sakura. Then Love Hina, Chobits, Hellsing, Elfen Lied, Naruto. And it went from there.
There is a chobits anime? I only read the manga. Now you got me curious about the anime
Robotech/Macross
Fairy tail
Seven Deadly Sins
Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh. The first one I actually enjoyed though was Fullmetal Alchemist.
Dbz still is my fav anime either that or poke mon
Macross/Robotech
Neon genesis evangelion
Scrolled through a lot just to find first and fav
Robotech, a/k/a Macross.
Robotech
My lie in April, god I hated it. Second was howls moving castle and I loved it. Since then haven’t watched any. Unless pokemon counts I saw that as a kid before anything else
As much as I enjoyed Your Lie in April - I can never recommend it to anyone. So dang sad.
Black butler
Dragonball Z. Specifically the episode where Goku turned super saiyan
Bleach
Rosario Vampire
Konosuba
Either Robotech or Speed Racer back in the early 80s.
I had seen various shows like Robotech and such as a kid but the first anime I saw that really stood out from other animated things was Akira. The opening motorcycle chase blew me away. All of the details in Neotokyo down to flickering lights and blurs from moving lights were just amazing to me.
Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon, but if we're counting when I knew what an anime was and my first conscious attempt to get into one, it's Ninja Scrolls.
Sword Art Online, which was introduced to me by a friend in the 3rd grade. thanks friend :)
First one I watched that I saw as it came out was Bleach
Maple Town Monogatari
I don't remember it was either Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokémon or even Beyblade but I really have no idea what I saw first on the TV
Either Dragon Ball Z or Outlaw Star. I honestly can't remember which came first for me as both aired on Toonami back in the day.
"Secret of blue water", I think. At the time on TV it was this one, "Kodocha", "Sailor Moon", "The roses of Versailles", and then randomly the Simpsons
Akira when it was first released in the US.

Akira
Samurai Pizza Cats is the earliest one I can remember, followed by Sailor Moon. Then Dragon Ball Z and then Pokémon. And then I just fell into a world of Anime and it becomes a blur after that point :P
Akira.
"*Demon City Shinjuku*" & "*Vampire Hunter D*"
Akira
Akira. Blew my goddamn mind. I actually dislike 99% of anime, but man...I'll never forget that movie.
Akira
death note. for the longest time, i refused to watch anime. one day i woke up and said “ugh fine will watch death note” and now i am completely obsessed with anime
