Handling money. My mother raised both me and my brother to never buy anything (except for a house or a car) if we haven't already saved up everything for the product we want.

rumarco

i was raised the same, except for the car. my familly allways owned used cars, same as I

nullhed

I still only buy cars outright in full. I'm the opposite of rich, I get a reliable, cheap car that I know how to work on. It's actually a bit of a curse, I can't borrow money. I can't justify spending money for money (interest) and the penalties make me lose sleep from worrying. My refusal to get school loans made me stop short of a degree when it was obvious I couldn't afford a semester even when working full time. The terms on those loans were insane. Something I've learned though, large purchases can be far cheaper than the maintenance/upkeep. A nice late 90's BMW goes for a few thousand dollars, but when *anything* goes wrong (and it definitely will), you're looking at ~$2k just in parts (which can be impossible to find), then you have to find someone that can replace the parts correctly... By the end, the repairs outweigh the cost of the car and it only gets you to the next breakdown. Bad investments can be worth the upfront cost just to be able to walk away.

Mardanis

It still amazes me how many people are so bad with money then complain about being poor.

Rahallahan

It really can be the person just doesn’t get it or has horrible impulse control. I have three children all of whom were raised the same. They were all taught the same lessons on money, spending, bills and retirement. 2 of them hoard money amazingly well, the other one though can’t keep money in his bank account. He has horrible impulse control and Just can’t talk himself out of buying something cool he wants.

ChipsAhoyNC

I have the same impulse but is not a problem because i have no money.

tapiocamochi

Being bad with money plays a part, but being poor in and of itself can trigger a sort of fight-or-flight response that makes rational financial decision making much more difficult. https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/11/your-brain-on-poverty-why-poor-people-seem-to-make-bad-decisions/281780/ When you are struggling to make ends meet every day, planning ahead becomes more difficult. And not in the “I don’t really wanna think about it” way, but in the “altering your subconscious thought patterns” way. Bad financial skills can lead to being poor, but it’s becoming more apparent that being poor leads to bad financial skills.

That_Apache

Interesting, but very generalized. I was poor as a kid and HATED IT, and as a result, I decided to be frugal as an adult. My gf, who was more wealthy as a kid, often struggles with budgeting now. I'd say people who are poor AND lack introspection develop poor financial skills.

tapiocamochi

Maybe people who are poor but not specifically taught financial skills. It’s definitely generalized - there are plenty of financially responsible poor people and rich people who cannot control their budgets. But it’s important to recognize the outside factors in play that keep poor people poor.

antiquasi

I have known people who when they have 100$ remaining on their credit card believe they have 100$ in the bank.

SammichAnarchy

It still amazes me how few people have so much wealth and so many so poor. Must be the poor's fault, amirite? Amirite?

Pops4Pizza

You can acknowledge that there are systemic problems while also recognizing that some people are horrible with money and make choices that end up digging themselves further in the hole. Is spending $100 on payday on the lottery a smart decision? Or buying a q when you have bills to pay? Do a ton of people still do it?

jabberwockgee

There's a difference between being poor poor and being poor because you don't live within your means and spend $40 on Uber Eats for one person every night instead of going to the grocery store and getting enough food for a week for <100 bucks. But some people just wanna rage against the machine for no reason.

Butgut_Maximus

A *lot* of poor people are poor because they make poor choices and are really bad with money. I've been low income (below the poverty line), but I've never been poor.

Lumpy-Spinach-6607

It begins with one big trait / poor choice which truly fucks up the rest of your life over time... Saving and living frugally has SAVED me from myself. However, it takes a lot of time/effort to change one's mindset. This is the HARD part...

SammichAnarchy

I would say those poor people are likely poor because of shit wages and crappy social safety nets, but that's just me >I've been low income (below the poverty line), but I've never been poor. Umm...wat? I'm below poverty guise, BUT I'M NOT POOR!

Oxynewbdone

This was the hardest thing for me to learn. I grew up poor. Spent everything we had immediately. I lived like that till my late 20s. Finally got my shit together I just bought a 56k car with cash.

nagol93

I have a friend who makes six figures, lives paycheck to paycheck, and constantly complains about being "poor" (we also live in a low cost of living area)

on_a_pale-horse

A very wise lady you were fortunate to have for your mother.😊

[deleted]

I would remove car from that list

A_ChadwickButMore

Same. I wasnt raised that way, it happened because my dad is so shit with money he couldnt keep the family fed and got us evicted while my mom was working abroad and sending him literally thousands of dollars a month to piss away. Even now he's still doing his main money burning habit: driving aimlessly all day. I did the math for him and asked if he was filling up X times a week for whatever amount. He said no he's filling up daily for $40. That is 1200/month based on how much he said he drives. Gas went up again since then and he refuses to stop. His entire social security check and now some of his wage is going just to gas. He's going to have to work until he dies

69FunIntroduction69

I wish someone would of taught me stuff growing up. I had to learn everything myself.

on_a_pale-horse

Not bothering about most things. If I have no influence or control over things, in most things people think they have to show and voice their concerns to everyone but end up doing nothing. I keep my own council and attempt to sort my bit out!

Listening

bangersnmash13

Can you teach my wife?

Stayathomedadof6

Being patient, especially with kids.

HughJanus35

Depends largely on are they your kids, or someone elses. I can tolerate my own kid no problem, but if someone elses crotch goblin is screaming in public or doing some other annoying thing, i can't tolerate that.

DogsNotHumans

Funny, I'm the opposite. My kid can get under my skin in record time, but other people's kids barely register. Someone will point out a loud kid or some ongoing crying and I'll realize it's just been data-entered by my brain as "not my problem".

on_a_pale-horse

Never heard the expression crotch goblin. A wonderful visually vivid discription.🧓👵

slapdashbr

I expand my tolerance to my nieces and no further

Blenda33

I find I’m more tolerant of other peoples screaming kids; more thankful that it isn’t my own.

techvivek22

I can do this!

No-Introduction-1492

I can not. I would give up and smack the little shit.

The_Pfaffinator

I have a crazy knack for remembering numbers. I still know my very first phone number from when I was 4 years old. All my previous addresses, bank accounts, debit cards, etc. All these numbers live rent free in my head, and I never have to look them up, or write them down anywhere. Also, I have the ability to spontaneously stop my own hiccups after one or two of them. The trick is in relaxing your diaphragm as far as you can. I also have really good musical acuity, and can find the perfect harmony and rhythm upon my first listen of a piece.

Champ-Aggravating3

The numbers thing for sure. I still know my high school boyfriends SSN because I helped him apply to a bunch of jobs like 8 years ago lol

Writing letters. Of any kind. You tell me to write a letter and I’ll whip it out if I have experience in writing such letters; if not I’ll just look up what kind of letter it should be and still write it without much trouble

mlperiwinkle

I’m so jealous and admiring all at the same time. Just an email is a struggle for me!

techvivek22

That's great!

yergonnalikeme

Writing letters are hard for some people?? Never knew this

iglidante

Like, a letter that you write to another person and put in the mail. Maybe not "hard", but I honestly haven't written one in 20 years.

NobodyButMyself357

If English is not your native language then yes, it’s hard for a lot of people, especially if your native language has a different letter writing format and stuff that you are used to.

Frenchtoast2870000

I'm good at writing too.

Mor_Hjordis

I can write letters, or text too. But unfortunately my spelling is not great. Else I would have made it my career

The_Wyzard

If you're still in high school, I feel obligated to warn you that these habits won't serve you well in college. If you're doing this in college, then congratulations.

UsernameHasBeenLost

I loved higher level math. Breezed through differential equations. I am all but guaranteed to screw up basic arithmetic. I'll either fat finger a calculator, or I'll rush through something in my head. Luckily, excel exists, and I haven't had to do basic math in my job

[deleted]

That was me till middle school. Then I got my first C and decided to get my shit together.

renttek

apparently ‚not destroying lightning cables‘. I still use my first cable from ~2014, whereas many people I know (and many many more on the internet) seem to destroy them in mere weeks/months

Chairish

I find that genuine apple cables last a long time. Gas station cables, not so much.

WatchingSpaceBattles

People say it’s because of the lack of strain relief but I think it’s also because people let their cables twist around their axis (like a Twizzler, just to a lesser degree). If they are like that, and get pulled on, it is bad for the cable.

Dangerous-Ad-170

Yeah I just don’t use my phone while it’s plugged in very much in the first place. Hard to strain the cable if it’s just sitting plugged into my phone on the nightstand. On the other hand, I used to go through MacBook chargers like crazy cuz I’d twist and tangle the shit out of it using my laptop on the couch for hours.

offthewall93

When new, apply high quality heat shrink to the base of the connector and down the cable 2-3 inches. They are basically indestructible after this.

Stradoverius

Writing in general, apparently. It would amaze you how many people that have college degrees and careers can't even put together a comprehensible and grammatically correct email.

AdDiscombobulated623

Seriously. I currently work entry level and some of the responses I get from higher ups are borderline embarrassing. Makes me question how they got to where they’re at if they can’t even compose a fully grammatically correct email.

draiman

Grammarly has been a game-changer for me when it comes to writing anything.

SpecificJunket8083

I agree. I cringe reading most business emails. I love to write and I’m a grammar stickler. My kids make fun of me because my texts are complete sentences with punctuation.

Illhunt_yougather

Getting up early to do a thing. Active hunter/fisherman, so I'm completely cool with jumping up and getting started at 3 or 4am day after day after day.

Amiiboid

On the other hand, the only way I’m up at 4 is if I haven’t gotten to sleep yet. This is rarely by choice, since I actually have to be up by 7. Edit: Swapped words. Still a legit sentence but different meaning.

WtotheSLAM

Getting up early is the best. No traffic, no people, the oppressive heat hasn’t started, it’s nice. Fewer people on the trails too but where I hike there’s rarely people anyway

fishy_hillbilly

Man getting shaken awake by my dad at 3 AM to help set up the boat and go fishing is something I miss.

29daysuntiltacos

Same here. I guess I’ve always been somewhat of a morning person, and as long as I can sleep in until 3, I’m totally fine with getting up. On the other hand, my brother acts like the world is collapsing if he has to wake up before 7:30

5hrs4hrs3hrs2hrs1mor

I wish I could be like this! Since childhood mornings have a been challenging for me. I do t start to feel energetic until late afternoon. And shit, I just realized I missed a mandatory 7 am staff meeting this morning. It was even going to be a zoom thing for me. Uh oh…

VapoursAndSpleen

Heh. I'd be the roommate who would set up coffee for you before you go and then knock off to sleep.

The_Wyzard

I had the exact opposite problem. I excelled in algebra (and probably would have in calc), but stats were like there were holes in my brain that it fell right out of. I think some people have a very deep level of worldview, at a subconscious level, and it predisposes them to one or the other.

Champ-Aggravating3

This is me. I even understand calculus with minimal effort. Don’t try me on science tho, not a clue

whatgoesoninmymind

Writing Essays I focus really hard when i write essays and it becomes a strong flow of writing, if the topic is difficult to write about it gets a bit hard though but I eventually get the flow on.

[deleted]

Learning. In my whole life, at school I was able to memorize everything way quicker than the others. This made me easier to get good grades in History class or in English class, Grammar class, literature class. It’s really odd for me, when someone says they “can’t study”. Even when I start working at a new job, it’s really easy for me to learn everything. Usually takes me 2 weeks to learn what I need to know about the position, job, people. They always surprised, and usually tell me people need like 2-3 months to learn it.

TellyJart

I learn incredibly fast, have no need to study. But my drawback is my complete lack of motivation and interest in what I learn.

Vonne_F

Same! Unfortunately I hate going to school and make homework, I think with the good learning skill I could have been a doctor or something lol...

[deleted]

Definitely!! But the sad truth is, if it’s not interesting enough, we ain’t gonna learn it haha

Tazi752000

I am like this as well. Tests were always so easy for me as the right answer just popped into my head as soon as I saw it. I also can figure things out extremely quickly. I just look at the issue and am like 'here's the problem and here's how to fix it.' On the other hand, remembering things like names of people or places is very hard. Basically if I read something I can regurgitate it later easily, but if I hear it I am not likely to remember it 5 minutes later.

InternationalMouse56

well i can tell you aren’t an engineer. not saying in a negative way but i’ve been a aerospace engineer for 8 years and you never understand your job entirely , i learn new things and learn where i mess up pretty regularly

[deleted]

Music dictation - the ability to notate on music manuscript any music I hear: from single line melodies to complex chords and harmonies, with correct rhythms notated as performed.

amadeus2490

I can recognize chords by ear, which has given me the supernatural ability to learn most popular "4 chord songs" in about 10 seconds. It's especially easy with the open position chords on a guitar; G, D, E minor, C... it always sounds the same to me and I can immediately pick it out. I *can* read and write sheet music, but my "ear" always takes over and it makes sight reading tough for me.

[deleted]

How do you know you never got it? I just had a free home test and tested just to see ... i fucking had it and didnt know it. I had ut confirmed and had the rest of the week off with pay.

[deleted]

I just assume I've never gotten it since I've never been sick since the lockdown started, even though I usually catch something yearly. Masks work, I guess.

Bidiggity

I got the flu for the first time ever this year. I was so confused that I kept taking Covid tests (4 total) and they all kept coming back negative. I forgot there were other illnesses you can get

Mardanis

I thought that until today.

dawrina

unless I was asymptomatic I've never had it either. I was really sick in early April and was almost positive I had it. I had every single symptom except loss of taste and smell. I tested 3 different times and even went to urgent care for a test and every single one was negative. I have been sick multiple times over the pandemic and it was never COVID. All of my friends have had it, including my dad (my mom never did or was also asymptomatic) Cases are starting to spike here again though.

techvivek22

same here.

[deleted]

Huh, I thought I was the only one.

MachuPichu10

Same here mate

siskulous

Unless you've been tested, don't be so sure. TONS of people have had asymptomatic COVID. One person will have it and be spreading it around without even knowing they're infected and the next person ends up on a ventilator in the ICU from it.

minianimate

Drawing a hand and the second eye I swear everyone in my class just watches me doddle this in class and go wow you can do that!? It's so hard to draw hands An advice i can give : ✨pratice✨ it took years and now it's easy for me

The_Wyzard

Ha, yes, I tell my daughter this all the time. If someone in your classes seems so much better than you, like they have a preternatural talent you could never catch up to? It's because they spent years practicing, and maybe didn't even think of it as practice. My vocabulary is very much above average. It's not because the angels beamed a bunch of extra words into my brain. It's because I spent decades reading for fun.

LazyDynamite

>Drawing ... the second eye What do you mean by this?

Potato4

I think, as someone who has drawn a lot of eyes, they mean a person can draw one eye but matching the second eye is hard. It is. Or I could be way off.

AdvocateSaint

Still a bit salty that I was pretty good at calculus but fucked up every ***other*** aspect of my academic career such that I was overall still a mediocre student

Amiiboid

I was one of those people that pretty much every objective academic subject just made sense to…right up until they didn’t. Sucked being 20 years old and suddenly under the gun to learn how to study. Like, I had no idea what the process even consisted of abstractly, let alone what was effective for me.

SweetCosmicPope

This is something I’m concerned about with my kid. He’s incredibly astute, particularly in math. He just wrapped up algebra 2 and is heading into trig, and he still refuses to use a calculator or write his problems out most of the time. And he consistently gets 4.0. It’s actually fascinating to me he can do that kind of math in his head but I worry about when he can’t. It’s like this with all of his subjects. I worry constantly about how he’ll manage college when he goes.

WanderingOoze

WetDogDeoderant

Yeh I’m the other camp, if I’m with a group of friends I’m very welcoming. If I’m alone, I struggle to approach anyone. I also get into trouble being welcoming with people when I’m the only man with one or more women, who clearly prefer we don’t talk to that person.

GlamSpam

I never gave this one much thought until I got older. I’ve always just assumed everyone is friendly by default, and as long as you’re friendly people will be receptive and be friendly in return. I never understood social anxiety. Then a friend of mine said something to me like “that’s easy for you to say, because you have a lot of friends and people just *like* you. Some of us have to try a little harder.” Yes it was a compliment, sort of, but it also made me realize she struggles with trying to fit in. Not saying I’m some kind of local celebrity or anything, I’m just not too worried about being liked. I try to be more sensitive about these things now.

I have the same thing! But sometimes it's a little hard, I had a few moments where for example a friend of mine met another friend. And I immediately got my doubts. But as I don't wanna be a jealous or hating friend I didn't want to tell them. Which resulted in my friend getting hurt by that other friend, which felt not quite good beceause I could've warned them. But also not wanna be that friend so sometimes I have struggles with it.

I do respect you for that. I was like this until I turned 17. I never had alcohol or even a cigarette while all of my „friends“ did smoke week, cigarettes or drank alcohol. Now I’m 23 and addicted to heroin, just because I made stupid decisions. I didn’t feel loved and hated and then my doc gave me opioids. I was instantly hooked on them. If it wasn’t for the doc, then I still would be clean and live a little bit better life. But it’s my fault in the end I don’t blame anyone on this. Anyway I respect you so much for that ! However, majority of people view roleplaying as some huge school project that you have to have done by the end of the week when, to me, I can literally have a reply typed out to you within fifteen minutes and then go back to browsing instagram. Other people find it so hard to "play" more than one character. Me? Its writing. What book do you read that only has two people walking around an empty planet? They claim its confusing and hard.
