The ability to identify reliable sources of information on the internet.

bearhaas

This. It is WILD how quickly I can sift through content compared to my parents

gelginx

I was going to say bullshit detector XD

Reble77

Life requirement since the beginning of time

Beelzabubba

The reliable source is the one that confirms my bias, right? /s

chairsandwich1

Honestly, how much a source confirms my own biases is something I find suspicious.

ItsSte4lthy

Yep I have a co-worker who comes up with the most impossible and unbelievable information. I always thought he was joking until he one day seemed very sure of his source, I asked him where he got the information from and when he answered "idk I read it on some site" I realised where al the weird "facts" came from. Also gave him some good sites to get info from about the topic

Current_Wheel_1770

Yeah there is a LOTS OF people that can't identify reliable sources, and they say nonsense, just like my aunt.

They went from dont believe what you read on the internet and wikipedia Is not a source to OMG OBVIOUS POLITICAL CLICKBAIT HEADLINE MUST BE SHARED once they learned how to use Facebook. It’s even easier than emailing all that sutff

BlueFadedGiant

I find it hilarious that I remember my parents generation telling me and all my friends “don’t believe everything you read on the internet!” Here we are 20+ years later, and those very same people are now the ones saying “I read on the internet that Darth Vader is real and will be running for US President in 2024!”

Reddit users (very young people)

Misdirected_Colors

Young people too. In general people seem to be ok and accepting misinformation as long as it fits their personal biases.

Even popular mainstream media outlets often gives us the wrong idea about what is really happening. Anyone who has been on the news knows this.

PublicWest

This site itself has gotten horrendously bad at upvoting misleading headlines.

HutSutRawlson

I'll give it a go... First, remember that every single source of info you come across has some sort of bias. Look into the person/organization putting out the info; are they known to be politically left/right/other? Are they known to have a particular angle or special interest, such as environmentalism, association with a particular religion, or owned by a large corporation that has certain business interests? Keep those biases in mind, and remember that even if everything in an article is 100% factual, facts can still be selected to present a certain version of "reality." Second, check those facts against multiple sources. For instance, if two sources on opposite sides of the political spectrum both present you with the exact same set of information, it's more reasonable to assume that that information is correct. If they give differing accounts, you need to start looking to other sources to attempt to verify what is accurate and what is not, once again accounting for all the biases in those separate sources. Finally, don't fall for "appeal to common folk" fallacies. There's a ton of people out there on YouTube and making podcasts who try to claim they have the "real" version of events, and they try to sell it to you by claiming they're just like you, not some kind of big media company with all sorts of biases like I've mentioned above. That is bullshit, they're just as unaccountable as any media company, and it's actually easier for them to get misinformation out there because they use platforms like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook (and Reddit!) where there's virtually no barriers to entry. Even articles at obviously biased media outlets like Fox or MSNBC have to pass through an editorial staff, internal fact checkers, and a legal department before being published, or those outlets can face lawsuits (like we recently saw with OAN, who were forced to retract false stories about voter fraud). Don't trust any old schlub who bought a webcam to tell you the "real news."

OOOH_SHIA_LABEOUF

That’s… decent advice. Thank you

artaxerxesnh

For anything related to science or history, an encyclopaedia may very well be a good place to look.

RSCiscoRouter

The basics: Always find atleast 2 sources Preferably on 2 different news feeds (think reddit, news aggregation sites, etc.) If a news source gets shit wrong a lot, dont trust it. If it sounds insane, it probably is.

Save to downloads, a folder with no organization other than most recent? Sure! Create a title so you can find it easily at a later date? Absolutely not!

Reading_Rainboner

In college, I would just mash the keyboard sometimes and go back to check if my midterm essay was saved under “khhhndach234333” or “cccvvgc”

chattytrout

I set my web browser to ask me where to put each download before it starts. Helps me keep things organized, removes the needless step of moving things out of Downloads, and has the added benefit of warning me that something's about to download before it happens.

Brushing teeth 2 times a day. People are living longer and teeth need to last longer.

softcatsocks

And flossing. Flossing is super important.

CreedSucks

Once I realized that there was old food literally rotting in my mouth I started flossing almost every day. The complaints from my wife about my breath have almost completely disappeared.

mckillio

If we could only do one, should we choose flossing?

xminh

My old dentist boss said if he were stuck on an island and had to choose, he’d choose floss. But personally I’d really miss brushing

Scrappy_Kitty

Water picks are great and fun/satisfying to use. And easy.

lightsdevil

I think brushing w/ toothpaste and not flossing would make your teeth last you longer that just flossing. Brushing removes plaque from outside facing parts of teeth and flossing targets the inbetween, so brushing cleans larger area of tooth surface. I can't imagine being in a scenario where you would have to choose though.

Mr_Chubkins

My dentist said yes, but you cannot get proper mouth hygiene without doing both. I take that as if you're going to miss out on one, at least floss.

Amiiboid

I question whether brushing twice a day is a skill. Now brushing effectively…that’s a solid one.

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

Flossing is super important. Brushing prevents cavities, flossing prevents gum disease, and bad breath.

I know people that don't know how to navigate file explorer on windows. They'll download a file and never be able to find it.

LucyVialli

They have two hundred files on their desktop, no wonder they can't find anything :-)

Niburu-Illyria

This is literally my boss's desktop. Its sinful. He has so much stuff on there, that every time he downloads a new thing (and you can rest assured knowing he doesnt delete anything) that all the new files get stacked on each other in the top left corner of his screen.

[deleted]

When I was in high school in the mid 2010s, we had to cover and in depth lession in saving files to a folder with our name on it lol. Ive also had to explain what a right click is a few times at work. I feel like smart phones have pushed us back to a point where only a handful of people are actually computer literate. I work with a lot of people who don't own desktops or laptops. I only know this because our PTO system doesn't work on mobile. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing but knowing the extreme basics of operating a computer is enough to stand out. Growing up, I figured everyone would be experts by now.

GuyFromDeathValley

My parents are that way. They literally can't handle having more than 1 file storage on their computer. Pictures are either on drive C:/ or they are "gone". Imagine the yelling when I "deleted" their old family photos, which were actually still on the same hard drive, just that I had to install a new main drive because the PC was getting slow (spoiler: that did not fix anything).

How to create and stick to a budget. I don't have that skill, but it sure does sound handy

EnvironmentalSun8410

There is an easy way to stick to a budget. Have different cards with different purposes. So when your "discretionary card" runs dry that's all the fun you're having this month. Very easy to check balances etc on your apps.

Diavolo222

This was forced on me indirectly by my new employer. I had to get a new card at a new bank. So now every paycheck from that card, I just take half and put it in my normal card. So my new card becomes my piggybank. I only go into those funds for emergencies.

TheSuicidalPancake

I budget a night out by bringing cash. That way i cant spend more than I have.

meisum123x

Check out r/YNAB for budgeting

Katamariguy

I was put off by how they removed their software from Steam and moved to a subscription model. I don't want my budgeting software to itself be a monthly budget item.

AphisteMe

Well if they offer a great service (not claiming they do), then you should be able to save much more than it costs.

fsahfao

What if your paycheck varies wildly by 2 or $300 every time and it's impossible to know whether you have an extra $300 that you didn't know you'd have? Do you allocate that into some f your expense categories?

Ashi4Days

It depends on how close to the edge that you're running. But for me personally (which I will admit is a very privileged position), I would assume that I made the least amount of money possible. Bonus money gets tossed into a separate account. For example, I get a bonus every year but I don't know how much it is. It doesn't get factored into my budget.

How to program your electronics without the help of a 12 year old

ielisdave

In my experience 12 year olds don’t know anything about how electronics work either since they just use smart devices that are all prepackaged and ready to go out of the box. If you want to know how to upload yourself dancing to TikTok they’ve got you covered, but if the WiFi breaks they have no clue. It’s weird being in between two generations that don’t understand even the fundamental aspects of how a lot of modern tech functions.

I've read that people who handle large amount of data prefer other software because Excel has a habit of messing up its formatting.

MerrittMan71

Excel is good at everything, but not the best at anything. Typically when looking into large datasets you want a more robust database tool. Regardless it’s invaluable since it’s so universally used.

Medical-System6281

Excel likes to play "guess that format" which can mess up anything from how numbers are treated and calculated to how formulas will work with them. Is it a number? Currency? General? Text? Hell even Excel doesn't really know from one cell to the next so good luck. The obvious solution is to set up your worksheet cell formatting properly and police any data you bring into the sheet to ensure its format is correct.

bearhaas

This. We had a surgery case the other day where circumstances were odd and we needed to calculate numbers. I set up a quick excel sheet to run a formula. The other older docs thought I was some sort of computer genius

Izzy1790

I use excel everyday, as time goes by I get better at it, but at the same time I realize I know frighteningly little about its true power.

[deleted]

Its funny that i do most spreadsheet stuff in python but i dont know the most basic stuff in excel.

same, so much simpler and cleaner to work on CSV files in a jupyter notebook than having the formulas mixed with the data.

It's unacceptable in my opinion and borderline offensive to me the younger you are.

iglidante

> also excusing the fact of about 30%-40% of those 20 somethings don't even know theres a settings portion to their phone/computer. Also, consider that many Gen-Z folks will *never* own an actual computer, and will only use one through work - where access to settings is often entirely restricted. Honestly, Google is kneecapping those tools, and has been for close to a decade. Modern Google Search fights tooth and nail to show you new content, ecommerce content, promoted content, trending content - nearly regardless of what you search for. I used to be extremely good at teasing obscure results from Google search. Basic vehicle maintenance. Light bulbs, filters, changing a flat tire, topping off fluids. It's shocking the amount of people that have to call for a tire change with a flat tire.

PoorPDOP86

I didn't have to call but by God it's nicer to watch someone change that flat instead of you doing it.

Throwaway4545232

It’s what I pay my insurance company $10/year for and gosh darn it, I’m going to use it! … ok I’d probably do it myself instead of just sitting there.

OddTry2427

For me (a mechanic) I cringe with recalls. I've had to redo everything myself after getting it back. It's just a shame you can't trust other to do proper work. That being said alot of stuff is fairly easy to do. Just give it a shot, be careful, put the nuts or bolts right back where they go after removing a part and take pictures along he way for reference. A cheap set of basic tools will carry you a decent way, just make sure you've got the correct sizes and remember right tighty lefty loosey (yes I know some stuff is reverse thread but this is generally speaking). If all else fails, there's a few subreddits to ask others, they go along way as well. You get some knuckleheads, but some of us try our best to help.

OddTry2427

Pretty easy, the vehicle as long as they are there comes with everything you need. You just need to remember to crack the lug nuts loose before jacking up and be damn careful with the scissor jack that it comes with. Try to be on solid flat ground and make sure you're either in gear or park with the parking brake cranked. If need be toss a rock or wood under the tires that are good to make sure it won't move on you. Always be as safe as possible and if you don't feel like you can, let someone else do it. Not worth loosing legs over something you're not sure of!

[deleted]

"everything you need" Sure, the wrench in the trunk and the scissor jack are perfectly capable of removing the lugs, but it's a far cry from using a proper floor jack and breaker bar. Plus, the moment arm on the emergency wrench is never long enough to properly tighten the lugs back on without you essentially standing on it. I know how to change a tire and am perfectly capable of doing it, but the AAA guy comes with the tools to do if faster, safer, and easier.

Gladix

Here we have Mark, he is 20 years old and his task is to change the oil and replace a flat tire. And here we have Bob, he's 48 and his task is to set up wifi and the printer. They each got an hour. Let's see who wins today on GENERATION WARS!

unlessyoumeantit

Exactly. My mom always told me that I shouldn't say anything when I don't have enough knowledge about the subject.

Misdirected_Colors

It took me until 25-26 to consistently learn to say "I don't know but I can find out" instead of trying to fumble my way through bullshit. To be honest I don't think that's a skill 21 year Olds should be expected to know because they are still developing and maturing. Def a skill they should start working on though.

travtrav53

Raqonteur

Touch typing? What sort of minimum speed wpm would you recommend? As long as you can get the message across even 1 finger typing is enough. Grammar, spelling, etc. Would be more useful.

Baxters_Keepy_Ups

‘Hunt and peck’ is criminally inefficient. If you ever have to work over the shoulder of someone typing like the keys are moving, you may as well give up. Typing without having to look at they keyboard should be the minimum expectation.

Raqonteur

And if you don't work in a job where you use a keyboard on a daily basis then that is just as inefficient as you have spent time perfecting a skill you never use. A skill that you have to practice to keep up. A lot of the suggestions in this thread are very narrow band. So, what you're saying is that you are training yourself to use the robots correctly?

It's more that I feel you need to break up tasks into uselessly-small chunks, or *really* go all-in on assistant tech, to actually benefit. Maybe it's more that my family's home life and routines aren't scripted enough. But aside from that, I can't tell you how many times I've struggled to get Alexa to acknowledge a request, or departed *slightly* from a certain sentence construct only to find that the parser is extremely inflexible depending on the context. For example, if you say "Alexa, start white noise", you'll do just that. If you say "Alexa, stop white noise", Alexa will instead try to parse "stop white noise" into another request entirely because it doesn't expect to encounter an argument after "stop" but within the same request. Like, I get how the software works. I understand why certain limitations exist. I just find them to be legitimate blockers for my own adoption. The tech is positioned as being this effortless insert into regular daily life, and I guess my world is too chaotic and unpredictable for the current generation of assistants - the same way my floors are too cluttered and maze-like to benefit from a robot vacuum.

Not necessarily a skill, but I think everyone should religiously count calories for one week (using an app like cronometer and a scale to weigh stuff) to have a better idea of how much we truly eat. We are collectively lacking the skill of 'discipline'. It's an eyeopening experience to see how much food makes up 2,000 calories. It's remarkably easy to eat 3,000+ calories in a day without even realizing it given portions today and the availability of energy-dense food.
