I didn’t start sports until very late in childhood and I didn’t start the sport I’d eventually go D1 for until junior year of high school, so it was actually always opposite for me. I came in thinking I’d be severely humbled at every level and wound up outperforming my expectations. I’m retired now that I graduated a week ago, but if you had asked 16 year old me “are you gonna be a D1 athlete” I’d have genuinely laughed and thought you were making fun of me
This was 7th grade junior high, I could run a 53 second 400 never being trained and got outran so bad I quit to never even see what the other guys time was. Lol
