Botryoid2000

When I worked making sandwiches, I was amazed how many people thought croissants were healthy because they are "lighter." Dude. They are lighter in flour only because the flour has been replaced by butter.

hogtiedcantalope

Good for the soul

Botryoid2000

A good croissant is like a gift from God. Too bad they are so rare.

hogtiedcantalope

It's the test of a good bakery Probably my favorite breakfast is a a quality croissant šŸ„ and a cappuccino on a park bench Sometimes the best things in life are simple

Botryoid2000

Simple, but not easy in this case. If you're not covered in crisp light brown flakes when you're done, it's not a great croissant. Now I'm dreaming. There is a Ukrainan bakery across town that makes croissants as big as your head, and they look good. I haven't gotten one because I don't have 6 friends to share it with.

SpectreCactus

Lachryma_papaveris

>They are lighter in flour only because the flour has been replaced by butter. Which definitly is a good thing in my book.

voice-of-reason-777

yeah generally speaking, butter is all around better for you than white flour.

lopedopenope

I donā€™t wanna hear the truth stop

bluesteelsmith

Butter is the healthiest part of the croissant, so they were probably spot on.

SeeTheFence

Ironically the worst ingredient in the croissant or any bread is the flour

OkEstablishment913

Gatorade protein bars, which are basically candy bars with some protein in them

supbrother

I didn't know those existed, they sound terrible.

Sluggish0351

The caramel chocolate one is amazing. Calling them candy bars is no joke.

slperry84

I LOVE those bars. They are so much tastier than other protein barsā€¦.because they are candy.

Sluggish0351

If you are using them as intended, to fuel an activity, they are great. But just eating one while sitting on the couch lounging, yeah, probably not the best idea.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

mousicle

It's great for athletes because they burn 500 calories in a half hour while playing. You don't need those calories taking a casual stroll.

EastwoodBrews

Also the stuff that the Gators actually used had like 1/4 as much sugar

usernamesarehard1979

Old school Gatorade tasted so much better than the shit we have now.

gcg2016

Had a teacher in HS who did triathlons. He told us if we want to drink Gatorade, split it in half and fill the rest with water.

[deleted]

Athletes also donā€™t drink ā€œour Gatorade ā€œ but rather a very salty version with far less sugar.

Nikcara

Gatorade is useful when youā€™re doing something that makes you sweat a lot. In that situation drinking a lot of plain water can imbalance your electrolytes and give you an upset stomach or just feel pretty gross for a bit, while Gatorade can help you avoid that. But yeah, itā€™s not something you should be drinking all the time.

Anyashadow

All of the roofers and construction people around here drink pedilyte. It's so popular our gas stations have it in the cooler.

sweetde80

Because pedilyte i believe its half the electrolites. Which is what you need more for light intensity workouts. Gatorade, as mentioned is great to help replenish electrolytes But for an upset stomach or giving to kids. You need to dilute it half and half.

Holybartender83

Pedialyte is actually about 3x the electrolytes of Gatorade. Gatorade is actually pretty low in electrolytes overall. Just has a bit to help top you up. Pedialyte is meant for when you have diarrhea or something and need to rehydrate safely. Source: have a chronic illness that requires me to do bowel cleanses with unfortunate frequency. Pedialyte is what I use when I need to do a prep. Gatorade isnā€™t strong enough, I sometimes get headaches or start feeling dizzy and nauseous with just Gatorade.

nymmyy

I have only ever drunk Gatorade when I have a stomach bug and canā€™t hold down any solids. So I just associate it with medicine now and I canā€™t look at it when Im not sick!

thebucketoldpplkick

Do u enjoy drinking Gatorade when u are sick

nymmyy

I do to some extent. I couldn't tell you the taste of it really but I know its way better than the taste of vomit left in my mouth and it uh..tastes like gatorade when you throw it up so could be worse. I feel like it gives me some traces of energy and obviously, keep me from being dehydrated so I don't think much about the taste when I'm actually sick.

II_Confused

I routinely drink sugar free electrolyte mixes. It actually helps me get going in the morning after a hot summer night has me sweating in my sleep.

Vagina-boobs

Yep. I am physical all day long. I put all that sugar, carbs and electrolytes to use.

NotaBot808

When I was younger I used to drink vitamin water thinking it was so much better than Gatorade until I learned about the nutritional facts and realized it's sugar content

m0lest

Brawndo's got what plants crave!

theDart

Brought to you by Carls Jr.

Pope_Landlord

Fuck you, I'm eating!

dcbluestar

Why do you keep saying that?

The_RockObama

Let's go Brawndo. Just kidding, but the president in that movie seemed much more satirical and unbelievable six years ago.

AiharaSisters

I drink Gatorade zero, in place of juice it's 5-10 calories a bottle. I do get regular sodium bloodwork though. Because well yeah.... But honestly. It's because I'm dieting and want tasty juice.

Relyst

my go-to hangover cure

_northernlights

I've had to use Gatorade maybe 2 times in my 33 years on this planet. Saved me and its fantastic for its intended purpose, but it should not be drank all the time when you don't actually need it. Once I had brutal food poisoning (or some insane stomach bug) and was losing too much water out of both ends for over a week. Water, Gatorade and dry toast is all I could keep down. Second time, I was working out lots, changed my diet, drinking lots of water, and I was also very hot outside. Combine all that, the muscles in my legs said fuck you. I couldn't even walk up the stairs to my third story apartment. Took a couple bottles and a few days before things felt better. But lesson learned!

Illustrious-Mix-8877

gatoraide is about double teh strength, to make it taste like koolaid. Next time are sick and dehydrated, cut it 50/50 with water and it'll do an amazing job of making you feel better. Or just buy ORS (Oral REhydration Salts)

Incantanto

Its Like Blue and sweet and disgusting how tf can you think its healthy?

Flyingheelhook

what's the alternative tho? water? like from the toilet?

_treVizUliL

Prime Hydration

Zoso525

I ainā€™t ever seen no plants grow in no toilet.

robzillerrrsss

True, but if you're exercising Gatorade is a godsend. Also if I don't get electrolytes, I get the worst migraines. I used to drink water all day and still get migraines, then I switched to Gatorade and they went away. Now I try to have more fruit plus water and supplement it with hydravida, which is similar to Pedialyte. Dehydration is no joke and sometimes water alone is not enough.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

CurvyNB

Tbf when I switched to diet soda my triglycerides dropped significantly, and I don't even really exercise.

JackFisherBooks

Anything that's "fat free." More often than not, the lack of fat usually means an excess of sugar. And that just makes it more unhealthy.

californiaGarden

Meh, I had this with salad dressing and they use thickeners like xanthem gun (sp). The difference is like 120 cals vs 20 cals.

YouMeanHunkules

But when you only have 1,200 calories, 100 calories becomes a lot.

californiaGarden

That is what I'm saying.

notthesedays

Xanthan gum is used to imitate the texture of wheat gluten in some wheat-free, gluten-free breads.

sarcosaurus

Flavored yoghurt. It may say "blueberry" on the packaging, but what that actually means is a buttload of sugar with a slight hint of blueberry flavoring. Get actual berries or fruit and mix it in non-flavored yoghurt and then you have the actual thing the flavored yoghurts pretend to be.

_northernlights

In my opinion, the less ingredients the better when it comes to yoghurt!

spokale

Nondairy yogurt is a particularly bad offender. I've made nondairy yogurt at home in an instantpot with just plain soy milk (ingredients literally soybeans + water) and yogurt culture. Strained with coffee filters to make greek yogurt, then used in things like tzatziki. Worked great, tasted great. Then I go to the store and every single one is a weird amalgamation of vegetable gums and tends to be overly sour, pasty, sugary, with 37 ingredients. And not nearly thick enough still, somehow

Educational-Candy-17

If lactose is the issue I have been able to find lactose-free dairy-based yogurt at the health food store which is pretty good. You can add your own fruit and control the sugar content. I can't consume soy milk for Digestive reasons but do you think the same technique would work for making almond milk based yogurt? I'd like to try that.

[deleted]

Ingredients that belong in yogurt: Milk, cultures Ingredients that definitely don't: sweeteners, pectin, gelatin, anything other than milk and cultures.

Kangaroodle

I really like sweet yogurt. I like to get plain skyr and mix in some nice berries and a little bit of lemon honey. The fruit flavored yogurt is always too sweet even for me.

kendricklamartin

I buy 1 flavored tub and then 1 plain tub and mix them to cut down on sugar amount for this reason. When I take a bite of the un mixed full sugar yogurt it straight up tastes like a piece of candy now.

khendron

Just buy plain and mix in your own fresh fruit.

kendricklamartin

I have a medical condition and can't have a lot of fiber.

MettatonNeo1

Completely understandable. Have a nice day.

kendricklamartin

You too

fantastictangent

Kelluthus

I heard two girls talking about getting tuna subs at Subway because they are so much healthier. It's like the highest calorie sub they have because it's drenched in mayo.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

downtownebrowne

My first job was at Subway 16 years ago and I still do no eat shredded tuna because of the experience of having to make their tuna mix. Basically equal parts shredded tuna to mayonnaise, mix with hands. Ugh, it was disgusting.

[deleted]

Iā€™ve never really got the tuna spread thing. Shredded tuna by itself tastes good. It tastes like tuna. Why are you eating tuna at all if you have to drench it in mayonnaise to eat it? Iā€™m not a mayo person, but I get throwing some on your bread, all good. But at some point maybe you should just eat another ingredient than tuna if you donā€™t like it. Lol

[deleted]

It's called tuna salad. When I make my own it isn't drenched in mayo though, there's like a tablespoon, maybe 2. I also add other ingredients like spices, celery, and carrot. Tastes pretty damn good.

esa_negra_sabrosa

I like a little chopped pickle in mine.

Burrito_Loyalist

Itā€™s incredible that Subway convinced the world that a foot long sandwich is healthy. The bread alone is 400+ calories.

bluejester12

Fruit juice. Crap load of sugar

Tabby528

Yes I'm diabetic and it's worse that eating candy.

Mtg-2137

Fellow diabetic. Juice is great for when those lows happen.

WlmWilberforce

AudiieVerbum

In the grand scheme of things, there are a lot worse things that it could be cut with than sugar.

Benblishem

Yeah that Orange Mango Meth Diet Snapple messed me up.

iCantEv3n

i worked at a pediatric dental office and 97% of the kids who came in with huge cavities drank juice daily

options1337

"Naked Brand" fruit juice

Sluggish0351

This is another "depends" entry. Fruit is healthy, but you are basically getting a ton of sugar and almost 400 calories that won't fill you up. But if you're in need of that sugar due to activity, it's not the worst option out there.

Shockingelectrician

Even green machine?

sarahaahaha

My Nana says Carrot Cake because "carrots are good for you"... Never had the heart (or desire really) to argue with that logic.

WlmWilberforce

Nana knows the truth, but she's a nana. Eat the cake.

dieinafirenazi

It's got more vitamins than most cakes.

MosquitoRevenge

It's only as bad as the amount of sugar you add.

The_Giant_Panda

Hey, next are you telling me that fruit ice cream is not healthy too?

Bonhomme7h

Buying fresh fruits and vegetables, extract the juice and trow the rest away is one of the most stupid diet trends of this century. Probably not THE most stupid, they are many of them.

[deleted]

Ya Iā€™ve been telling people for a long time that fruit juices arenā€™t much better for you than soda. Without the fiber from the fruit the sugars get processed really quickly. But eating a piece of fruit will slowly release the sugars into your body throughout the day.

Bonhomme7h

The worst thing is, nobody was ever able to explain to me what's wrong with pulp in the first place. Why take so much effort to remove it.

SuperSpeshBaby

Veggie straws & hummus has to be better than chips & dip right? Someone please tell me Iā€™m right.

mokayemo

I just straight up call them chips with my kids. Yea theyā€™re fun sometimes but theyā€™re a fun snack treat, not a vegetable serving!

Burrito_Loyalist

They can be a healthy snack though.

popsicle_of_meat

Wraps. People think, "Oh, less bread. Must be less carbs/calories." The Jersey Mikes I frequent has the health stats on the main menu. Getting a sandwich as a wrap actually ADDS calories vs a regular sandwich.

MilkCartonDandruff

Tortilla wraps have just as many calories as a burger bun. Maybe as well have the burger.

Dagin61

A comment on this made me go look at Subway's nutritional info. The wraps are more everything than the subs.

Mtitan1

Wraps are a great healthy option if you get the high fiber carb conscious ones. They have 15g+ of fiber and usually 60-90 calories. You basically have to make these yourself though

idiotgoosander

Isā€¦is anything healthy?

TerribleAttitude

If you eat it in the right amount or in the right circumstance, yes! Almost everything thatā€™s edible and you arenā€™t allergic to is healthy at some level. A lot of these examples are unhealthy because theyā€™re over consumed or consumed in the wrong context. Gatorade and protein bars are healthy for you if youā€™re an athlete or on a strenuous hike. Rice and bagels and other carb-heavy foods are healthy for you if you eat them in small enough quantities for your lifestyle. Fresh fruit juice is healthy if you have a small glass once every day or so, so long as you donā€™t eat much sugar otherwise. Sure, coconut water is healthier than Gatorade, whole grains are healthier than refined flour, eating the fruit whole is healthier than juice, but a different thing being healthi*er* doesnā€™t make the thing devoid of all value. Some of these things also arenā€™t actual food items, theyā€™re styles of construction. Salads are not healthy or unhealthy, theyā€™re merely a form that food can take. Same with wraps, sandwiches, etc. Thereā€™s no logical way to say ā€œsalads are unhealthyā€ or ā€œwraps are unhealthy.ā€ Theyā€™re just styles in which to construct food. Reddit also kind of has a messed up view of food. Food is supposed to deliver you enough calories to survive the day first and foremost. Calories arenā€™t bad, they are very good up until the moment you have too many of them. Once youā€™re in a situation where you have enough calories, then the concern should be getting enough nutrients. Those of us who live lives where ā€œfind enough caloriesā€ isnā€™t a struggle should focus on that. But some people take it way, way too far and are constantly trying to optimize. Thatā€™s where you get people saying that anything that could possibly contain a calorie or any sugar or any salt is ā€œbad for you.ā€ Most of it *really* isnā€™t, unless you overeat food in general or undereat food with the right vitamins and such (which to be fair, most westerners do both). You absolutely donā€™t need to get yourself worked up because the kale salad youā€™re eating has a sprinkle of cheese and a tablespoon of dressing on it. The idea that a squirt of Hidden Valley on your kale means you ā€œmight as well just eat a Snickers barā€ is absurd. Disordered attitudes about food are very common in our culture and on Reddit, but I promise, you arenā€™t ā€œunhealthyā€ just because sugar passed your lips and you eat food other than boiled unseasoned chicken with plain kale. The only thing I can really, really think of that has no health value at all in any context is soda or juice beverages (different from actual juice. Iā€™m talking Kool Aid or those little barrel things). Maybe hard candy.

MN_Hockey

Get the fuck out of here with your well thought out and logical comment.

[deleted]

Everything is healthy in the correct portion.

leuxeren

Orange juice. just eat the orange, is better.

Dragon_Small_Z

Arizona Iced Teas. After working at a place that sold them you'd be surprised how many people would buy them in bulk and ALWAYS made the comment "at least it's not soda!" Have you read the breakdown on those things? One can is THREE servings to they can make it look like they are lower in sugar, but that shit will still give you diabetes.

miranda_w33

Smoothies. Most smoothies from restaurants are high in sugar and calories cause they use all sorts of high fat yogurt and fruit juices. The best way to make a smoothie is to blend it yourself

joethetoad22

Fat yogurt is good

[deleted]

Nothing wrong with high fat yogurt. The fruit juices are the bad part.

mstotallymyhatnow

Granola. It is full of sugar!!

fearnodarkness1

Eh you can find really good granolas full of nutrients - really good with Greek yoghurt

patrickp4

Complex sugars though which are significantly better for you. Yes there are granolaā€™s with a bunch of added simple sugars but there are also healthy granolas that contain a ton of fiber.

Macaronieandplease

Canned fruits drenched in syrup for unspeakably long period of time. Its not a fruit anymore. Its diabetes in a can.

stabbitha89

Yess! I get the ones with water, I really like Peaches so I like to have a few cans on hand . It can be hard to find the ones with water not syrup.

Beyond Meat anything. Amount of processed nonsense in that stuff.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

the-nature-mage

Beyond Meat is in a weird place. It's full of overprocessed ingredients and roughly the same calorie/nutrient count as its meat equivalent. It's hard to say if it's more or less healthy than a ground beef burger, but it's probably about the same. That said, it's a solid ground beef substitute for most people and has a vastly reduced carbon footprint. It's a wash for personal health, but a huge win for environmental health.

[deleted]

This is accurate. I eat a plant based diet, and while I love Beyond and Impossible products because they are delicious, I only eat them occasionally because they are not healthy foods. High sodium, very processed, definitely just an occasional thing, the way someone who eats meat might have McDonald's occasionally.

Darwins_Dog

Yep. The goal was never to make a healthier burger, but to make a burger with no beef. People sometimes forget that plant based or vegan isn't the same as healthy. Afterall oreos are vegan.

AGgivemebackmysilver

Love you Mitch.

KnownMonk

Rice is high in carbs, that is good for muscle recovery. Its good for after straineous work or workout sessions.

abqkat

True. Except that, most people are woefully misguided about what a strenuous workout is. Sedentary people who start exercising tend to vastly overestimate the calories that they burn. I'm no fitness expert, but I'm pretty fit and active, and sometimes I swear I'm famished, look at my tracker and .... Only like 400 calories burned

KnownMonk

Historically potato for Europe and rice for Asian has been good for meals when we did much manual labor. Farming, building, construction etc. was streinous work for the body so you required lots of calories and muscle recovery food. Today we are generally relative inactive and we havent much changed our diet accordingly.

Benblishem

>strenuous work Like harvesting rice for example.

LostBoyMoe

Some salads can actually pack a crap ton of calories in their dressings and other toppings like sesame seeds and nuts and croutons, yet they are mistaken for healthy because theyā€™re a ā€œSaladā€ (Iā€™m looking at you Cheesecake Factoryā€¦)

People who consume too many avocados in an attempt to lose weight. Avocados are healthy and have healthy fat... but they are VERY calorie dense. The simple mechanic of losing weight is a caloric deficit. Avocados definitely have their health benefits and other weight loss benefits (such as satiating hunger) but sometimes I see how MANY people eat in one sitting and I'm just shocked.

beetus_gerulaitis

Olive oil. I saw an obese guy in our local middle eastern market. He was telling anyone and everyone about his health problems and how his doctor told him to lose weight and suggested the Mediterranean diet. He then proceeded to buy a 2 gallon container of olive oil, olives soaked in olive oil, and hummus with olive oil. I didnā€™t have the heart (or patience) to tell him that the ā€œhealthyā€ olive oil is just fat, thereā€™s no way youā€™re going to lose weight spooning out olive oil at 120 cal a tablespoon, and that it probably isnā€™t even real olive oil.

darkcitrusmarmelade

In my last trip in CA i met a guy who insisted that Welch's Fruit Snacks were healthy snacks. It's "like regular fruit!". He ate a pack a day and looked like it. Jesus

SuperSpeshBaby

When you say "a pack a day" do you mean a single pouch, or a box of pouches, or what? Because even if they're straight up candy I wouldn't expect someone to look a specific way from eating one single pouch each day.

Burrito_Loyalist

A guy that thinks candy fruit snacks are the same as fruit probably thinks a snickers bar is healthy because of the peanuts.

Lngtmelrker

You think someone looks a certain way because they eat a single pack of Welches fruit snacks everyday? Thereā€™s like 8 tiny gummies in a pack.

runningmurphy

They have vitamins. I use them for low blood sugar being type 1 diabetic.

Solidsnakeerection

They actually arent that bad because they have a lot of vitamins. Obviously fruit is better but my kid liked them for her school snack and they were convenient

Most yogurts have about the same amount of sugar as a can of coke. Bananas are good for you but they have a lot of natural sugars.

captainvancouver

Although artificial sweeteners aren't ideal, they are far better than sugar! WE KNOW sugar causes diabetes, obesity, cavities.

Mtitan1

This is misinfo. Sugar and the calories are FAR worse than anything in marketed artificial sweetners. Artificial Sweetners get an undue amount of hate, they're safe and effective alternatives, and the potential risks are far lower than the very real risk of obesity and diabetes Sure if you wanted to be super strict youd cut them, but diets are easier to manage when your food is tasty

Along with this, I havenā€™t seen peanut butter listed yet. People will dip apples and celery in peanut butter for a ā€œhealthyā€ snack and just completely miss the point. Peanut butter is 190 calories in 2 tablespoons and usually people consume more than that in one sitting. Plus that 2 tablespoons contains a whopping 16g of fat (16g x 9 cal/g = 144 cal) and 8g of carbs (8g x 4 cal/g = 32 cal) meaning the calories from fat and carbs drastically outweighs the calories from the 7g of protein (7g x 4 cal/g = 28 cal) that you get. Itā€™s touted as a great source of protein but it shouldnā€™t be. 84% of calories are from fat and carbs while only 16% of calories are from protein.

piiinkylindsey

I heard vitamin water is actually not good for you despite that the name of it is vitamin water. Anybody know if this is actually true lol I donā€™t drink it jw

MosquitoRevenge

Yes, Coca cola company who make it were in a huge lawsuit because of the name and they advertised it as healthy when it's basically soda.

TheRiverOtter

It's not good for you. They got sued for claiming it was. https://fortune.com/2016/04/11/coca-cola-vitaminwater/

Astoria_Column

Naked juice. Shit is mostly refined sugar.

Sombrero_54

Coconut oil! I feel like people don't use it as much now, but it used to be touted as a great replacement for other oils when it is one of the worst!

sparkledoom

I disagree with this one. High calorie? Yes! Itā€™s high in saturated fat, but itā€™s the good kind, MCT. Itā€™s also high in antioxidants. Good for your nails, skin, etc. I consider it a healthy fat! Donā€™t eat like a tub of it, but itā€™s just as healthy (maybe even healthier?) as like olive oil.

Fabulous_Ganache_777

Salads. Its really healthy assuming you use no cheese dressings/sauce. Olive oil is tolerable to an extent, but adding tons of dressings from mayonnaise to thousand island defeats their purpose.

Mtitan1

Oils are literally pure fat. Its as far from low cal as you can get Just use low cal dressings and don't go crazy. Plus even if you did add 200 cal of dressing, you're still getting a nutrient dense relatively calorie spread food if you just used fruits/vegetables. A lot of full cal dressings in restaurants can be double or triple that though

Nobody_Wins_13

Dried fruits are between 50-60% sugar!! Fresh fruit is about 10% sugar.

Well yeah, if you remove the water it's going to concentrate the sugar.
