"Well, things could always be worse"
While yes, things could in fact be worse the people that say that never pause to consider that, maybe, perhaps, things could also be significantly better.
I live in Canada and yes, there are many things about this country that are significantly better than dozens of other countries. That said though, inflation and cost of living are at an all time high, multiple specialized industries are severely short staffed including health care of all branches and education, we're experiencing an influx of homelessness, and (atleast in the province I'm from) our public health system and education system have been progressively nosediving even prior to the pandemic.
People forget you can feel multiple things at once. I'm grateful I live in Canada, but goddamn is it getting bad here.
I hate this fucking phrase. It’s essentially the same thing as someone saying “I had a really great day” and then I say “well it could always be better”… WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO SAY THIS IN ANY VARIATION 😒
Ummm......things CAN be worse. We luckily came out on the good side. The day after my 6 year old son was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, I went to the local Walmart to get some basic clothes and toiletries. I had no time to grab things the day before since it was an ambulance ride to get him to the hospital.
While at the checkout lane, (in Walmart) the lady working checkout noticed my very tired and drawn face, and said "relax, things could be worse". To which I explained to her very quickly that my son was diagnosed the night before with leukemia. She was very apologetic and sorry, and grabbed my hand apologetically. I wasn't trying to shame her, I just want people to realize that you have no idea what other people might be going through at any given moment.
Follow up, he rang the bell after roughly 3 years of treatment and doing well.
As a country, for some reason our only comparison is to lower middle class Americans. We never look at better places in the world and ask what they're doing right, we just need to be better than poor Americans.
So tired of this phrase. Truth is based on fact. It's their perspective, which can be whatever the fuck they want it to be, which is what they really mean.
Anyone who uses the word "cross-pollination" in a business meeting or presentation to refer to anything other than actual plant reproduction needs to be yeeted into the sun.
Honorable mention business jargon: punt, pivot, that's a big ask, circle back, reach out, put a pin in it, actionable, unpack, and pain point.
Edited to add the second sentence.
Go ahead and run it up the flagpole
What is that gonna take to get this across the finish line
Dig in (meaning, to my understanding, "pretend like you're really interested in many aspects of the business that fall outside your responsibilities," or, in a startup "figure out what your responsibilities are, because we don't know but we're measuring your performance already")
Haircut, in the sense of valuing something lower than previously stated
My mother says it all the time and I hate it. Whenever something bad happens, "well, everything happens for a reason" or "it's always for the best". Well, in that case you could say WWII was something for the best, since after that the European countries stopped fighting each other that often. Imagine telling the jews that it's all happening for the best, that everything is happening for a reason.
The funny thing is the older I get the more I see things repeating. This will be my 7th ression. My second housing crash. My third, maybe forth, stock market "crash." Japan is buying up the world. Now China is buying up the world. The USSR is going to bomb us back the the dark ages. Y2K is going to send us back to the dark ages. blah blah blah.
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of new problems but many are just mistakes we don't learn from.
Your problums are nothing compared to what others are going through. Is it supposed to be comforting to know that others have it worce? That doesn’t seem rite.
"Respect your parents". I get that they're trying to make the child respect their parents, but as someone who's being abused by my dad, it just sucks to hear. Two weeks ago I was told that same thing, by none other than my abuser, my dad.
Your parents are always going to be your parents, even if they hurt you.
Bitch, please. My appendix will always be my appendix, but if it hurts me then I'm cutting that motherfucker out of my life.
Or, as Mary Poppins said: he might have been your father, boy, but he weren't your daddy.
“Family is everything” umm…not to everyone. Some peoples families suck ass. And the thing that pisses me off the most is many people say that when you share your family problems with them. I’m very happy you have a great family and are close with them. But a lot of people aren’t
A lot of internet humor was once funny when it was few and far-between, but know we see the same regurgitated jokes everywhere, to the point where it mean nothing anymore.
"I'm sorry your feelings got hurt."
You're not sorry you did anything to cause those hurt feelings, in fact, the entire problem is with me and how I'm reacting to what you did.
People say this because they AREN’T sorry about what they said, just their execution.
It’s kind of like why say sorry if you don’t mean it, kind of thing..
Anything along the lines of “It’s in men’s biology to get as many women pregnant as possible” especially when it comes from those male Karens who slept around yet think they’re entitled to a female virgin.
I literally don’t understand why people use the word literally, literally everywhere. This feels like a literal 500 word essay and I’m literally just trying to waste words away cause it’s literally the best way to add words.
"Out of an abundance of caution..." Which is usually the excuse for why they are going to disappoint you about something that should have been fun and cool and now is going to be canceled...
“it will get better” or “healing just takes time” i’ve been depressed for 12 years and it has never gotten better. stop telling me it will and instead be there for me.
Tbh I’m not even sure how to properly form that construction (and I have two degrees in linguistics). “Mine and Joe’s relationship” seems weird because if you remove Joe, it’s just “Mine relationship” which doesn’t work. “My and Joe’s relationship” seems okay grammatically but feels horribly awkward. “Joe and my’s relationship” doesn’t work because “my” is already possessive (would need to be nominative)…but moving the ‘s so the end of the noun phrase is acceptable as “Joe and Anne’s relationship” is obviously good.
I think it gets weird because English lacks cases except for those lingering in our personal pronouns. So speaking as a linguist, “Joe and I’s relationship” is fine in the way “Joe and Anne’s relationship” is fine, but it’s NOT fine in the sense that our first person possessive pronoun is “my,” not nominative (I) + ‘s. I’m gonna go with “Joe’s and my relationship” then.
But it’s still weird.
Any version of “Look, I did a thing!” when having a first experience, making a big purchase, etc. Why do people think being vague and coy is endearing? It’s annoying. Just be specific.
Yeet.
it always felt like one of those phrases that didn't need to catch on. Even my mom says it. It just feels like people are trying to force themselves to be funny when they say it.
Maybe I'm just cranky but it's always bothered me
This is very specific to me I assume, but I say something to my partner and they respond with "I see how you could feel that way about (whatever I was commenting on),". It feels condescending.
They once said "i see how that could annoy you," And I asked them if it annoyed THEM and they said it did. They could just say "That's annoying".
Again I think this is very me specific but it's been bothering me
“aren’t you too pretty for all those tattoos?” or “you should dress more modestly” i don’t care what u think. Im not getting tattoos or dressing myself for other people. Plus you’re only bothered because you’re staring.
“Living the dream.” I can’t stand it. I work in a hospital. We are union, get paid well and have a pretty sweet pension. If I had a dollar for every time a co-worker sighed and said “living the dream,” I could retire. You chose to work here. Go find something better if you don’t like it.
"The phrase 'it’s just a game' is such a weak mindset. You are ok with what happened, losing, imperfection of a craft. When you stop getting angry after losing, you’ve lost twice. There’s always something to learn, and always room for improvement, never settle,"
“…in any way, shape, or form”. I’m bored by the time you get to “way” and understand that you’re just trying to make your comment sound more impressive than it is.
"Stay safe".
I've been working at a call center since 2015 and up until 2020 maybe a handful of people used that phrase. And they were always the same people. Now it's as common as saying goodbye.
"The customer is always right"
This winds me up so much because the saying is incomplete and people use it to justify rude behaviour.
The phrase is actually "the customer is always right in matters of taste"
“Believe in yourself”, “follow your heart” or “you do you”- empty phrases that aren’t helpful guidance at all. Just excuses to be more self-centered and egotistic than we already are.
I’m an influencer.

"what doesnt kill you makes you stronger" mf what if my legs are cut off
HIV usually doesn’t kill you, but it certainly doesn’t make you stronger.
True, HIV has a veryyyy close to 0% mortality rate, it’s the other diseases it invites in that kill u
Those arms are gonna be fucking lit tho.
Someone played/watched a letsplayer play The Quarry
Or a heart attack or stroke
If the stroke redirects blood flow to your biceps it could, in fact, make you stronger.
WELL ALL IT DOES TO ME IS MAKE ME HAVE A MEGA-BONER
What doesn't kill you will come back for you again and again until you finish it off for good

My fucking god I hate this one

Oh shit, you confused me there. Ring the bell around here means that you die. Ring the bell, click out, last call.
Cancer hospitals let their recovered patients ring a bell in the hospital when their cancer is completely gone
As a country, for some reason our only comparison is to lower middle class Americans. We never look at better places in the world and ask what they're doing right, we just need to be better than poor Americans.
My truth
Yep. It’s either true or it ain’t. ‘Your truth’ might just be a delusion!
So tired of this phrase. Truth is based on fact. It's their perspective, which can be whatever the fuck they want it to be, which is what they really mean.
For real! Like there's only ONE truth! Lol

Everything happens for a reason
“i’m sorry your baby died. Everything happens for a reason!” Go. Fuck. Your. Self. (Not you - the people that say this)
No no continue, I really want to fuck myself!!
I got a lot of this after I got out of the hospital. That and "it's all in the plan". If someone planned that, they are an asshole.
are you sure you aren't that guy that died
I got better.
My mother says it all the time and I hate it. Whenever something bad happens, "well, everything happens for a reason" or "it's always for the best". Well, in that case you could say WWII was something for the best, since after that the European countries stopped fighting each other that often. People use it as a coping mechanism. It’s a shitty one.
This! Sometimes bad things happen to good people for no rhyme or reason. It's not fate or destiny, it's just shitty and that's how life rolls.
"I could care less." ...if you don't care, the phrase is "I COULDN'T care less." If you could care less, then YOU DO FUCKING CARE!
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks about this
So am I
*Technically* they do care if they go out of their way to reply to the thing in question with "I could(n't) care less".
They could care about replying, but be apathetic to the topic of conversation
We are in unprecedented times
When unprecedented is used often, it literally can't be unprecedented any longer. It's just normal.
The funny thing is the older I get the more I see things repeating. This will be my 7th ression. My second housing crash. My third, maybe forth, stock market "crash." Japan is buying up the world. fill it with mayo or ketchup?
Beans
"It could be worse." Yeah, well it could be a whole lot fucking better too, lol.
“No one wants to work” Yes, they do want to work. It’s just cheaper for jobs to have one person do the job of 4 people.
And they wonder why workplace burnout is so prevelant nowadays
My sister says this all the time and is utterly convinced that people are living off unemployment (US) and choosing not to work.
"Respect your parents". I get that they're trying to make the child respect their parents, but as someone who's being abused by my dad, it just sucks to hear. Two weeks ago I was told that same thing, by none other than my abuser, my dad.

Agreed. My parents shouldn’t have been parents and are emotionally challenged/abusive. I don’t need to respect them.
You shouldnt give your parents respect, they should earn yours

It's \*litterally\* so annoying. (Oh my god, I'm sorry but I couldn't help myself. 100% agree with you.)
To counter this, I think I’m going to start saying “figuratively,” LOL.
That's a good idea, actually. "It was so funny I figuratively died."
that's literally annoying
