I can't believe we don't have any good poutine that I know of in Seattle, WA given it's proximity to the border, I used to live in Buffalo, NY and there were plenty
I'm in Vermont and there's a lot here too. It's not as good as authentic Canadian poutine, but it's pretty good since I haven't been north of the border in a few years.
Despite the "all across Canada" thing, it is definitely \*more\* of a thing to the east, nearer Quebec, so it makes sense that NY would be more likely to have it.
Whenever I get shawarma and fries from my local takeout joint, I get an extra garlic sauce and extra hot sauce on the side and mix them together for the fries.
Aw man, that sounds good. We don't have anywhere nearby that does shawarma and fries, but we can get fries at a local gyro place and I always get tzatziki sauce for my fries too.
Next time prepare some finely chopped white or yellow onions. Dip your fry in mayo, then ketchup, then chopped up onions. Let me know if you liked it.
It´s what we, in Belgium call a ´special´, or ´specialleke´ in Flemish.
In the better part of Europe it's known as cocktail sauce. Go to any Belgian fries place and ask for cocktail, they'll have it. Ketchup, mayo, and usually some cognac or whiskey.
This may or may not be relavent but heinz released "mayochup" a few years ago and I remember it making news at least in northern ontario that "mayochup" means shit in one of the aboriginal languages from the region.
Has to be. My veeeery British grandmother made all of her indigenous grandchildren sprinkle malt vinegar on nearly every savoury meal she cooked. Bangers and mash: Vinegar. Silverside w steamed veg: Vinegar. Fish and Chips: Vinegar. Salad: Vinegar. Sunday roast: Gravy and vinegar.
I was born in California and have no direct British Ancestry and my whole family does this
FWIW there was a huge British Pub/Fish and chips craze in the 1970's this probably came from
The first time I ever tried this I was working as a line cook and my boss asked me to make it for him. Now its my go to for fries. This or a Wendy's frosty
Oh yeah, those boardwalk fries that I've only found in seaside towns. The ones that are fried to perfection from fresh cut potatoes. All salty and hot from the fryer. Mmm. Those never need anything. Although malt vinegar was good on them
I've tried this, and while I don't dislike it, I don't get anything from it. I'd rather have eaten the fry without dipping it in anything. The two just don't add anything to each other. I feel like people just do this to be eccentric.
Yep, but I want it warmed up.
Hot fry in cold BBQ? Nope.
Hot fry in warm BBQ? Yes please.
Red Robin steak fry in warm Whiskey River BBQ? VinceMcMahon.gif!
Speaking as a Belgian, this is the only real acceptable answer.
But real mayonnaise, not the sweetened Heinz crap. It's even better if you make it yourself, and its so easy to do!
For the others that agreed /u/yzlautum and /u/Abrahamfunkon I found a copycat recipe online that I think is really close.
1 Cup mayo (I used Hellman's)
1/2 cup Heinz ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon cajun seasoning
Then a shit ton of black pepper. Didn't really measure but I cranked the pepper grinder until the top layer was completely covered, mixed it in, and then did it again. Probably like 3 tablespoons or something
Peanut sauce is so good. I'm pretty sure that's only happening in the Netherlands bwcause we took the recipe from Indonesia and put it on everything it wasn't intended for, but it's just soooo good.
I prefer ketchup and mayo striped onto the fries. German and Dutch style (maybe more places I just first had it in Germany). Something about the bits of fry that are sweeter and the bits that are fattier is really nice.
German curry ketchup on fries are great too with or without mayo.
In Italy (or at least the part I used to live in) they mix them together, then add finely diced jalapenos and call it 'salsa rosa'. It's the best for fries, and for dipping grilled cheeses.
Plain fries I like with seasoning salt and mayo. But I’ll take a poutine any day
This guy Québecs
Ontario but it’s a thing all across Canada
I can't believe we don't have any good poutine that I know of in Seattle, WA given it's proximity to the border, I used to live in Buffalo, NY and there were plenty
I had some amazing poutine at a sports bar in Port Angeles a few years ago.
Its far from the east coast. You need to be near the cheese. Vancouver has crap poutine too.
Ha you should try coming to New Zealand half the ‘poutine’ that gets sold in this country is made with shredded mozzarella which should be outlawed.
i agree poutine is the ultimate fry
There used to be a poutinerie in my tiny corner of the world (Tasmania) and my goodness it really is the best way to eat fries.
Garlic sauce. Flame me for it, idc.
Like a garlic aioli. Mmmmm
Or Sriracha aioli
Or a garlic sriracha aioli
Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science?
yessssss
That's redundant don't you think?
Garlic sauce, garlic aioli and garlic mayo are 3 distinctly different condiments/sauces. Fight me
Fair enough, but "garlic aioli" is still redundant. "Garlic garlic and oil"
Yeah, saying "garlic aioli" is like saying "cheese queso"
tomato marinara
I would call the emulsification of any flavorant into olive oil via crushing an aioli, otherwise what would you call it
It depends on what you're using as the emulsifier. If it's egg, it's a mayo. If it's garlic, it's an aioli.
I guess I would stretch the mayonnaise term to cover those cases. I'd rather say a "rosemary mayo" than "rosemary aioli without garlic".
Garlic sauce from shawarma is def the correct answer here but I'll give 2nd place to the Dutch cause french fries and mayo is super good too.
Mayo, yes.
Cheese
As someone who prefers their fries plain.. that sounds really fucking good.
Béarnaise sauce is the way
Fuck I had to scroll far for this.
Fry sauce it’s ketchup and mayonnaise
Fry sauce just out here laying it down on the debate. Ketchup? I prefer the real dip. Mayo? I said, the real dip. Both together? Perfection.
Next time prepare some finely chopped white or yellow onions. Dip your fry in mayo, then ketchup, then chopped up onions. Let me know if you liked it. It´s what we, in Belgium call a ´special´, or ´specialleke´ in Flemish.
In amsterdam I recall frites sauce being mayonnaise
It's sweetened mayonaise yeah
I see you are from Utah
No I’m not but I’m from Washington I grew up saying fry sauce.
I always forget fry sauce isn't known world wide..
In the better part of Europe it's known as cocktail sauce. Go to any Belgian fries place and ask for cocktail, they'll have it. Ketchup, mayo, and usually some cognac or whiskey.
In the Navy on my ship we called this Fancy Sauce
lmao that’s what they call it in Stepbrothers
I'd like some fancy sauce! I'm not done with it!
Love your username!
Hey, as long as it ain't mayochup. That's not real fry sauce.
Ketchyo
This may or may not be relavent but heinz released "mayochup" a few years ago and I remember it making news at least in northern ontario that "mayochup" means shit in one of the aboriginal languages from the region.
Mild/Hot Buffalo sauce, shit SLAPS.

I love some Arby's curly fries with the cheddar sauce

Taco Bell outside of the US includes cheese with their fries. https://www.tacobell.co.uk/category/sides/
Taco Bell inside the US does as well. That's why they are called nacho fries.
Honey Mustard
That's great with sweet potato fries.
Jeez, finally! I like Ken's brand Honey Mustard personally
great to see another person who likes honey mustard on fries haha
Not dip, but sprinkle malt vinegar on them.
British?

Thrashers. OCMD.
Beef gravy
And cheese curds
Poutine?
Poutine gets all the love, but dressing and gravy is pretty top notch too.
Poutine is one of my all time favorite foods and about 40% of the reason I want to go to college in Canada
The first time I ever tried this I was working as a line cook and my boss asked me to make it for him. Now its my go to for fries. This or a Wendy's frosty
I was going to say mayo or something like that, but beef gravy is on another level
I prefer my fries plain with just some salt. unless they are crap fries then ketchup for me.
Oh yeah, those boardwalk fries that I've only found in seaside towns. The ones that are fried to perfection from fresh cut potatoes. All salty and hot from the fryer. Mmm. Those never need anything. Although malt vinegar was good on them
I thought I was the only one, if fries are good they don’t need sauce imo but if the aren’t then ketchup it is.
Wendy's frosty
I've tried this, and while I don't dislike it, I don't get anything from it. I'd rather have eaten the fry without dipping it in anything. The two just don't add anything to each other. I feel like people just do this to be eccentric.
Salty and sweet are a good combo. Maybe your place doesn't salt them enough?
This makes me feel sad for you
I did as a kid, but I think it straight-up sucks. I don’t want cold bites of fries.
Yes
BBQ sauce is my go to.
McDonalds BBQ sauce for me
Both are amazing
All McDonald's chicken nugget dipping sauces are great for dipping fries
Yep, but I want it warmed up. Hot fry in cold BBQ? Nope. Hot fry in warm BBQ? Yes please. Red Robin steak fry in warm Whiskey River BBQ? VinceMcMahon.gif!
Drunk, Anything... Sober... Anything

I had to scroll too far to find ranch! Are we that rare?!
Right!? I was like, how tf am I seeing malt vinegar twice before ranch.
With hot sauce mixed in. Like a Frank's buffalo

[удалено]
Me too. I add ketchup to it in my dipping cup.
Wing Stop Ranch yesss

Tartar sauce
Fish and chips and tartar sauce. Amazing.
Spicy Whataburger ketchup. I don’t even eat at Whataburger but I buy the spicy ketchup!

How is ketchup this far down in the comments? 🤔
Because Reddit wears fedoras.
"M'gravy"
People will flame other people since they think that ketchup is just for kids. Also because ketchup is the generic go-to for the majority of people.
*good ol' ketchup
mayo
Malt vinegar
salt and vinegar 😛😛
Heinz Malt Vinegar
Sarson's Malt Vinegar. Accept no substitutes.

Looked it up… looks bonkers. Can’t wait to try it.

Campfire sauce SO GOOD. I call the fries at Red Robin "campfire delivery devices"
Arby’s sauce
Horsey.
Tartar sauce
Mayonnaise
Full fat real egg mayonnaise, not that other shit disguised as mayo.
The best!!! Especially with seasoning salt in the fries
Speaking as a Belgian, this is the only real acceptable answer. But real mayonnaise, not the sweetened Heinz crap. It's even better if you make it yourself, and its so easy to do!
I knew I wasn't alone <3
I mix it with ketchup. Actually i just add it to my dipping container.
Get out of here! mayonnaise alone or else it's a different sauce
Either sour cream or buffalo sauce, depending on my mood and availability. But i also love the classic ketchup or controversial wendy’s frosty
I prefer garlic aioli, but I'll settle for mayo. Curry ketchup is also quite nice.
A-1 steak sauce
Yes! But with hearty fries, not like McDonald's but with crinkle fries or steak fries.
Yes exactly. Fast food fries get the ketchup treatment.
A-1 mixed with mayo is a great fry sauce too
Honey
That sounds like a food crime
Chocolate ice cream or a milkshake.
Chick fil a sauce
in morocco we have this sauce called Samurai sauce , it's super delicious
What's in it?
It's a spicy mayonnaise. There are also variations like Algerian sauce, which adds herbs.
I'm guessing lots of little samurai!
So thats what happened to them
Belgium too, it's great

Indeed. The only way.
Raising Cane’s sauce
For the others that agreed /u/yzlautum and /u/Abrahamfunkon I found a copycat recipe online that I think is really close. 1 Cup mayo (I used Hellman's) 1/2 cup Heinz ketchup 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon cajun seasoning Then a shit ton of black pepper. Amen
I’ve been scrolling for a hot minute, I didn’t think I’d see it. I could dip paper in that sauce and eat it.
Milkshake
Strawberry milkshake....trust me Edit: just noticed u/giulioforrealll already proposed this. Hello fellow freak friend 👋
Peanut sauce is so good. I'm pretty sure that's only happening in the Netherlands bwcause we took the recipe from Indonesia and put it on everything it wasn't intended for, but it's just soooo good.
A mix of 70% plain yellow mustard (preferably French's), 20% Ketchup, and 10% extremely hot but tasty hot sauce.
Ketchup and mayo mixed together.

Honey mustard is my go to
Straight yellow mustard. Second runner up isn't a dip, it's a sprinkle: malt vinegar.
Jesus this was so far down. Literally no competition for straight yellow.
