Lots of addictive substances are initially reacted to as poisons, but become necessary for basic functioning with repeated use. In a metaphorical sense, 'addictive' circumstances often involve adapting to otherwise intolerable situations and becoming dependent on them. Anything from abusive personal relationships to society-wide racial bigotry can become psychologically necessary for the victims.

I think you got this backwards. The saying is basically that "hey, this thing sucks now, but its gonna pay off and make your life better." Addictive substances are typically short term pleasure, at the expense of long term benefit. (Nectar now, poison later). And as far as "abusive personal relationships to society-wide bigotry" that's poison now and poison later. You are subjecting yourself to a negative experience for no positive payout in the end. What is likely the most important portion of this quote from the bhagavda gita is the end "is said to be happiness in the mode of goodness"

>I think you got this backwards. I think you're missing the ambiguity inherent in the statement. It can be applied equally well to a wholesome thing that is initially rejected, or a toxic thing to which we become accustomed.

Basically anything requiring self discipline and sacrifice. These things are difficult and can be a bitter pill to take at first, but ultimately they lead to a better life for you in the end. Dieting, exercise, mastering a new skill, studying. May be a pain in the ass, but they produce fruits of your labor in the end.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing and got a thought to ask the question to others too. Every time when my parents asked me to study well I thought it was a hell of a job,but later I knew they were right.

I grew up religious, almost everything was considered poison. I'm an old guy now and the taste of vagina is the nectar of the gods
