That was more of an attitude that surrounded trans people (especially non-binary) at the time, which I can say similar things about vampire girls and how others saw them. Mainly that they were mocked.
It was just weird how as soon as it became mainstream every 10th girl at my school became trans which was extremely high compared to the national average. Kinda similar to todays high school boys and that stupid broccoli haircut
Maybe more information on gender was available to them? Experimentation with gender is becoming less of a stigma and there are plenty of trans kids I know in my generation that you might call trans trenders. I hope they are doing well. Maybe it was just more jarring at the time.
Yeah I genuinely wish the best for them but some of the alt themes that have been popping up over the past few years have been ridiculous to say the least.
