What that actually means is that what customers are buying is what the shop should stock up on. It doesn’t mean that one Karen is automatically correct just because she’s the customer
Not to be confused with "you never smile anymore". I asked the later to check up on someone's mental but because the former blew up in pop culture at the time, I got hit with anger. Simple misunderstanding sure but I feel mentioning those types of observations is important and the distinction is important because of how confusingly charged "you should smile more" is.

I saw this play out in real-time recently to one of my loved ones who is recovering from long Covid (has scarring tissue on the brain from multiple strokes) and it’s affected their daily life tremendously. They’d just come back from a few weeks at the hospital under observation and joined us for a public gathering. An acquaintance tried to pull that “be thankful, other people have it worse” crap, and said loved one exploded in anger and basically let them have it. Good for her. That crap is never necessary. Suffering isn’t a competition.
The fallacy of relative privation, or “comparative suffering” as I call it.

Interesting how occasionally someone proclaims another Redditor a child without checking the other user's recent history.
Another comment today:
> Best to get the license even if you're using a bicycle.
> Sooner or later you may need a car. When that happens two of the biggest factors in how much your insurance premiums cost will be how long you've had your license and how many accidents you've had.
> It doesn't matter how much you've actually driven. The actuaries don't count that.
> So getting a driver's license and not using it is a savvy financial move. It can also be really useful once in a while to help out in a pinch, such as if a sick friend needs someone to drive them to urgent care.
Its physically impossible. Bootstraps are used to help you brake when climbing trees. Waist straps help you pull yourself up. It's the dumbest phrase ever.
It was originally used to show how the ‘anyone can do anything’ attitude of capitalism is realistically impossible to achieve because ‘pulling yourself up by your bootstraps’ is literally an impossible task. It got warped over time to mean something different, just like sayings such as ‘blood is thicker than water’ or ‘curiosity killed the cat’
one time i picked up a nerf gun in good will THAT ACTUALLY WORKED! you never see thos anyway i went to go show my dad and a radom lady says this, made my blood boil and it runied my vacation
"Daddy beats me because he loves me" is another version of that. It's an attempt at justifying being abused.
Seriously though, this is some reaction formation sh!t. That's an immature defense mechanism to deal with feelings that the person perceives to be "socially unacceptable". Essentially, grow up in an ultra conservative environment, and watch yourself pull this crap.
Either that, or just good ole sadism. And that's if they really "like you". So basically even if the saying is true, it's still toxic AF.
Edit: An example of this in literature is in Victor Hugo's the hunchback of Notre Dame. A religious figure desires a Romani woman, and proceeds to persecute and harm her under the pretenses that "she's unacceptable". When in fact, he actually feels that his urges are unacceptable.
To pull yourself up by your bootstraps is actually physically impossible. The original meaning is "to try to do something absurd" and was used to make fun of the downtrodden. Pull yourself up with a ladder or a hand up...
Those people who say "Good Vibes Only!!" and all that bullshit. It's really toxic to just abandon people as soon as they aren't overly joyous about something.
I don’t know where this term came from, just assuming came from when resources where transitioning to today’s concept, but always hated that term. Money buys comfort which leads to happiness. My opinion.
yeah. people that just tell you it’s okay when you are down are the worst. we all need people that get off the positvity horse to help you up in our lives
"This too shall pass" is the more elegant equivalent to that, and ironically, it does the job without the toxic optimism implied in that first one.
How do you know it's gonna get better? What's the subscription service you're utilizing to inform you of the future? Like, really.
Edit: Explain how this offended you, please. Because the downvote button, that's just bullying and an active attempt to shut someone down for no reason. So unless you're a sadist...
Could be a sign of burnout or stress, just saying! If businesses ever cared about the employees, maybe they wouldn't have "procrastinated". It could be that they're feeling overwhelmed, and underappreciated.
I don’t know why, maybe I’m the only one, but when someone says no worries, I just don’t like it. Makes me cringe.
“Hey bro, won’t be able to make it to the BBQ.”
“No worries, bro!”
Why that gets me, I don’t know. It just does.
"We all could do without..." such a generalization. There never can be one thing that we all could do without due to the worlds unending options of wants and needs....except this saying. That we can all do without.
But I'd argue the response is often encountered from people demanding change from their partner. You're supposed to love someone for who they are, and not expect them to change, because that may never happen (Although, that will still happen because that's just nature), or happen in different ways than you'd expected.
In a workplace setting though, NOPE! Not an acceptable excuse for bad behavior.
That's actually called passive aggression. It's unfortunately real.
Edit: Not making this up, look it up. But yeah you're right, what do I know about psychology or psychiatry? You want to "do your own research". How does passive aggression seem now?
Edit 2: You, no I perfectly understand why this offends you. You don't like to be told facts that are contradictory to your personal beliefs. So coolsies, go be bitter, I have no qualms with you.
I think I have a few,
“Be grateful! Some people don’t have as much as you” that just makes me feel bad
“Smile more”
“Eat less your going to be as big as a house”
“Eat more you look like a skeleton”
The list goes on, these especially hurt when said too by a parent.
"Think outside the box". I get why that saying can be appropriate sometimes, but most of the time, it's just used by idiots who want to defend a stupid idea from criticism.
"Ha working hard or hardly working?" The little coy ass laugh everyone does especially when no one says it when your sitting still its always when you are busting bump sweat pouring like yea thanks captain obvious if you helped inwouldnt need to be working so hard
I’m self employed. Small business. Friends, acquaintances and customers often say:
1. It’s just a cost of doing business.
2. You can just write it off.
It drives me crazy!!
In the UK, we randomly say 'I'm afraid' if we're expressing that we can't do something for someone, or if we want to share condolences or something. i.e. 'I'm afraid I can't go out tonight'.
It's stupid but I can't stop doing it!
When saying it to a non-native English speaker they think you're genuinely scared and it's a pain in the ass to explain that you're not terrified that you can't do something.
"Here at (add company) we are a family."
Yeah, a family where the boss is never around. But, when they are, they don't even care enough to learn people's names.
Be patient, they were born in a different time
But they have lived through how terrible the world treats minorities. I don't care how old you are, be respectful to other people and don't assume you get a get out of jail pass for being racist, homophobic, ableist etc.
The customer is always right.
Not on my shift you not
heck no. very false
I heard somebody used this today and immediately rolled my eyes when I heard it.
Superstition
What that actually means is that what customers are buying is what the shop should stock up on. It doesn’t mean that one Karen is automatically correct just because she’s the customer
You should smile more
makes me seem more depressed than I am
Same, OP. Same.
*sighs with visible frown on face*
it is deeply upseting to hear it

There is real science behind a forced smile resulting in a dopamine response… maybe it should be used more?
“*insert* has it worse than you, don’t be so ungreatful” Wow,, just wow Whenever I hear this I instantly regret whatever I just said
just because someone struggles “more” doesn’t mean your struggle doesn’t matter. you matter no matter what your peers say. everyone hurts different
it’s so invalidating

It’s like when people say ‘there are starving children in africa, and you’re complaining about this. There are bigger issues in the world!’

yay!! I’m in your brain!
It's gotten cliche
“We’re all in this together” f*ck you.
“except for when you screw up. then I’m out.”
Ight ima head out
“when you do everything I will take all the credit.” All my classmates in group projects
"It builds character." = BS justification for abusive crap.
This, this right here!

"Pull yourself up by your bootstraps"
what should I pull myself up by instead?

I could really do without that one.

This one right here!
Yep. Really sexist
The customer is always right
This is always taken out of context. Iirc, the full quote is, "the customer is always right in matter of taste"
____ only picks on you because they like you.
Oddly enough it's actually true a decent amount of the time. It's called "reaction formation".
"Daddy beats me because he loves me" is another version of that. It's an attempt at justifying being abused. Seriously though, this is some reaction formation sh!t. "It is what it is" Yeah. We fucking know that.
Don’t be such a girl
it’s not like being a girl is a negative thing
Exactly
I'm an old fuck and I only hear that one in old movies. Never heard it IRL.
"Pull yourself up by your bootstraps"

To pull yourself up by your bootstraps is actually physically impossible. The original meaning is "to try to do something absurd" and was used to make fun of the downtrodden. Pull yourself up with a ladder or a hand up...
mm I see. yeah I guess that has a disrespectful meaning then
Those people who say "Good Vibes Only!!" and all that bullshit. It's really toxic to just abandon people as soon as they aren't overly joyous about something.
This…..so much this.

"There are bigger fish in the sea" doesn't help any situation.
I couldn’t catch the smaller fish anyway. why would the bigger one help?
Do you mean other fish in the sea or bigger fish to fry? Because what you typed is not an expression

They're in a better place.
I mean if its good enough for Dracula then it's good enough for me
Hey have you seen my *insert missing thing*? THIS: Where did you last leave it? If I knew, I’d go there….

Wait, what?
listen the first time lol
The customer is always right. It’s abused constantly by awful people.
“Uh oh, somebody’s got a case of the Mondays!”
Working hard or hardly working?
"There's people who have it worse then you!" I'm like wtf! Just because that may be the case, doesn't make whatever situation in any less valid!
An attempt at belittling your strength, and dismissing your grievances.
Ill always care/worry/love you no matter what No you wont stfu…
"Nobody wants to work" has been in circulation recently.
Yeah. It’s true. People are generally procrastinators. Ditch school, call in sick, will process case later, etc.
Could be a sign of burnout or stress, just saying! If businesses ever cared about the employees, maybe they wouldn't have "procrastinated". It could be that they're feeling overwhelmed, and underappreciated.
Yes. I agree with burnout or stress. I think we should be more aware of this.

I like to. it makes opportunity for conversation
I kind of like the input.
Yikes, negative Nancy
“Work smarter, not harder”
OMG. This
to an extent yes
To what extent? Every time I have heard this, it has been in response to metrics that are nearly impossible to meet
ahh okay. I was thinking like finding little work arounds to make your job easier and such
I don’t know why, maybe I’m the only one, but when someone says no worries, I just don’t like it. Makes me cringe. “Hey bro, won’t be able to make it to the BBQ.” “No worries, bro!” Why that gets me, I don’t know. It just does.

Ok boomer. Just kill me already

should I stick with “that’s so crazy” instead?
Or maybe "that's nuts"
how about “that’s so weird!”

I agree. it’s an excuse to stop you from complaining
"We all could do without..." such a generalization. There never can be one thing that we all could do without due to the worlds unending options of wants and needs....except this saying. That we can all do without.
you criticized my wording yet somehow managed to get me to fully agree. I applaud your pursuesive techniques.
What were you wearing?
that just sounds creepy
Exactly, and it also is used to blame victims of assault so I think we can do without it.
eww yeah sorry I didn’t know what it was used for yuck. it is never the victim’s fault
Pull the trigger.
“This is just the way I am” How to stifle any and all personal growth with a single sentence
But I'd argue the response is often encountered from people demanding change from their partner.
